Georgiadogs.com devotes its latest “Catching Up” profile of Bulldogs players to fullback Shaun Chapas. Asked if the players are working so hard this summer because they feel they need to prove themselves, Chapas says: “To me and the guys that I came in with, we haven’t won a championship since we have been here. That is obviously something that everyone aspires to at this level. We are all driven to win.”
Speaking of Chapas, the Macon Telegraph looks at how Chapas and fellow fullback Fred Munzenmaier have taken it on themselves to lead Georgia’s young running backs corps this summer. “It’s pretty crucial to have a couple guys that know what’s going on because we’re in that time where the coaches can’t be with us,” Munzenmaier says. And one of those young backs, redshirt freshman Carlton Thomas, says, “As a unit, we’re communicating good and everybody’s pushing each other behind Shaun and Fred, who are leading the group. Everybody’s falling in line behind them. We’re coming in and working, then doing some extra work, and even sometimes we might come back and do some more. Everybody’s on track, and everybody’s holding everyone accountable.”
The Red & Black talked with safety Reshad Jones, who says he’s glad he decided to stay in school rather than entering the NFL draft. “I think about it every now and then, but I really just try to put it in the back of my mind and just get focused on this season.” What does Georgia’s defense need to do this year? “I would say just turnovers, period,” he says. “Turnovers help win ball games, give the offense better field position, stuff like that. I think we just need to focus on getting more turnovers.”
Maybe an increased emphasis on fundamentals like tackling wouldn’t hurt either, Reshad.
The Augusta Chronicle talked recently with family man Marcus Washington about his return from injury. “Rehab went good, shoulder’s good, knee’s good … everything’s good,” the senior linebacker says. “Now I’m just ready to get back out there and make a difference.”
And one more list to wind up the week. Austin Murphy of Sports Illustrated ranks the 10 most thrilling college football players of all time. Herschel Walker comes in fourth. Who topped him? Vince Young, Earl Campbell and Dick Butkus.

Just found out, Saint Tebow is number five. Get another Heisman this year and maybe he will move up a slot.

Sounds like Reshad is putting the cart before the horse. That’s like an offensive player saying “we need to score more points.” Well duh Captain Obvious, but how are you going to do that? I find those comments to be very unsettling. If he thinks a lack of turnovers is our only problem perhaps he didn’t learn so much from last year. Not a good sign…

Bill, I really appreciate the thrice-daily reports.
I saw Vince Young play on television, saw Butkus on t.v. when I was too young to remember, and saw Campbell a few times on t.v. as well. Nothing or Nobody can top Herschel during his freshman year. In fact, his first touchdown against Bill Bates remains in the top ten of the most exciting plays I have ever seen in college football ( I still think I have to have Buck to Lindsey at number 1).

That Raghib Ishmeal (forgive me for the spelling if its wrong please) isn’t in the Top Five “most thrilling” destroys the credibility of that list. BTW: I hate Notre Dame, but that guy was undeniably electric in college ball. To me “thrilling” is different than “best.” “Thrilling” connotes the kind of guy that you expect to take it to the house any time he touches the ball. You expect the unexpected. Its different than reliability, or toughness or even productivity. I guess I think of guys like David Palmer and Reggie Bush and Deion, even Flutie when I think of “thrilling” much more than those listed. I suppose what I am really getting at is that Austin Murphy is a douche.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that a guy named “Austin” put two guys from The University of Texas (Austin, TX that is) ahead of Herschel.

If Reshad would just make it his goal his tackle his opponents so hard that they lose control of their bowels, the turnovers will come. Agree with you, Bryan G.

Bill King: Just because Reshad Jones didn’t specifically mention fundamentals in the single article you quoted doesn’t mean fundamentals aren’t an emphasis by him, or any other player in this offseason. Bill, look, past cheap shots you’ve taken at Stafford and Moreno (among others) really detract from your writing. Other than that I appreciate your hard work.

The Tech game alone probably made Reshad Jones un-draftable (if that’s a word). I hope he knows that he has A LOT to prove this year with his tackling. If not, make room for Shawn Williams.

Reshad Jones is the Jeff Francoer of UGA football. It’s just unfortunate he can’t be traded. Too many stars next to his name too early in his career and no coach to rip his head off and put it back on straight. Blown assignments and missed tackles don’t show up on his NFL resume like INT # and 40 yard dash. It should be evident that’s all he cares about.

TC, I was using my usual dose of sarcasm. Vince Young number one? I would put him behind Saint Tebow.
Tebow will be fine in the NFL. The OL snaps the ball and he parts the sea of defenders and walks into the endzone while enabling blind refs to see.

With Jakar Hamilton and Alec Ogletree coming in all Georgias safeties are about to be tested. If certain guys dont step up they will be left behind. Reshad may be gone by then to the pros but we are three deep at safety .

Have to agree with Huh? If Reshad would concentrate on tackling a ball carrier, maybe he would get a turnover. Really, lack of turnovers did not kill us last year, basic football fundamentals, or the lack thereof helped do us in, particularly against GT. Keep hearing about all of these superstar defense backs we are getting to commit, do we have the right people to help coach them up? Just food for thought. Yea, I know I sound pessimistic, hangover from prior years when a certain coach said he had waited a lifetime to coach a team like this.(Quote, unquote). If all of these years of great recruiting classes still add up to 2, 3 or 4 losses a year, what gives? Yea, I know the SEC is a tough place to play, but quit the excuses and get to the top year after year. Getting beat by UF year after year is getting old, not to mention each year a complete meltdown against someone.”Finish the Drill”, then let’s do it!!
