Two-minute drill: Meechigan? Who’s Meechigan?

The Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer and UGA athletics director Damon Evans are both back from vacation and putting to rest the rumor of Georgia-Michigan matchups in 2010 and 2011 that first surfaced in the Ann Arbor school’s student newspaper. Evans told Weiszer on Wednesday that “there’s nothing to it whatsoever.” But he grants that “in the future” UGA “might” have some interest in such a home-and-home deal. “But there’s no discussions between Michigan and Georgia about a game.” …

Kudos to walk-on defensive tackle Brandon Wheeling on earning a scholarship for the 2009 season. And it couldn’t have come at a better time. “With the economy and everything right now, it was huge,” the transfer from West Georgia told The Red & Black. “My dad had been laid off recently, so that was huge for my whole family.” Wheeling, who has one season of eligibility left, was named outstanding walk-on after spring practice. …

The Athens Banner-Herald reports UGA is still awaiting word from the NCAA Clearinghouse on defensive tackle recruit Kwame Geathers, but recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach Rodney Garner said, “I think he’ll be fine.” Garner expects Geathers to report next month in time for the opening of preseason camp. …

And from the Dark Side of the border: The Gainesville Sun’s Gatorsports.com profiled the 2009 Georgia Bulldogs and summed up the team’s strength as “Deeee-fense. Georgia returns a great blend of size and speed, experience and youth along the front four — including the immovable Geno Atkins at defensive tackle — and has 11 quality linebackers to provide perpetual fresh legs.” The Sun sees the Dogs’ weakness as the “glaring vacancy” at quarterback after the loss of Matthew Stafford. Still, the paper says, Joe Cox “has plenty of classroom time and just needs on-field experience, but he has a built-in go-to guy in spectacular sophomore A.J. Green and one of the nation’s finest offensive line rotations to work behind.” Toughest game for the Dogs? Let’s just say the Gainesville scribe didn’t have far to look.

I think we should get the W if Florida doesn’t beat us by at least two scores. Same with everybody else on their schedule.

What is the big deal about playing Michigan? The Big Ten is down especially Michigan and there is no reason to give them a chance of earning any respect by beating a SEC team. Lets go play Texas or Oklahoma if you want to earn repsect and a big matchup.

Huh? I don’t see your Jackets clamoring to add UF anytime soon so shut it and leave the UGA blog alone. I don’t go trawling the GT blogs looking at who may beat you this season.

I hope UGA plays Michigan…I wish that UF would play a home & away series with say Texas or Ohio State or somebody nationally as well. The SEC is brutal enough, but it would be a good thing IMO

AtlGator The SEC is getting the nod over the Big10 in BCS bowl selections. I don’t see any need to play them outside of the scheduled bowl games. Texas and OU are the 2 top programs to gun for if you want to make a statement. I rank Michigan no higher than Az St. Okie St, or Oregon at the moment. Oregon is getting more media attention especially from ESPN than they deserve IMO. Oregon is on UGA’s schedule.

As for GT they look for respect playing Vandy and Miss St. the basement regulars for the SEC East and West and they still get all they can handle.

Watch Miss State and Vandy lay some wood on Tech this year. Tech better bring their A game to both of those outings.

Meechigan are wusses! and Nutre Dame too. Few years back Damonn tried to sked Mich and ND, but neither were interested of course. Couple of weeks later, I read and article Mich and Nuter Lame agreed on a contract ’till 2014, I believe.

I would love to see OU, Tx, Buckeyes and JoePa match up. Most of us fans want these type of games, but Richt ain’t for it. Which I don’t blame him… of course SEC is brutal enough and to add top elite programs makes even more brutal. At this day and age, coaches have to fight to win to keep their jobs. We all know it’s an unforgiven b’n'e’. I think we have the Buffs lined up for 2010 at Boulder.. that will be prolly another tough road game.

Nothing to gain from playing a Big 10 team. SEC schedule is tough enough. What we’re doing now is a lot tougher than what most teams do playing an SEC schedule plus some folks like Oklahoma State, ASU, Oregon, etc. And before an idiot dawg hater mentions the cupcakes that are on our schedule, you need to post your teams schedule. I guarantee it won’t compare with UGA’s.

As of 1 minute ago 4.25% of the people that voted on who has the toughest season opening opponent voted that Florida vs Charleston Southern was the toughest. WTF are you idiots smoking, snorting, and shooting?

Preston, I admit I am the one who voted for Florida vs Charleston Southern several times last night. I was cleaning my guns and I ran out of whiskey. So I had a few shots of General Neylands Volunteer Bore Cleaner and I went berserk. Read any of my posts last night. I insulted Bill’s wife and never even knew it. He let me know.

So yeah, I admit. I am the one who voted several times for Florida’s opener. Look what happened to Michigan and Appy State. I throw myself on the mercy of the court. Wait a minute, I still need to clean my .357. Woooohoooo!

The last Big 10 team to defeat Georgia was Michigan in 1958 I believe. That is over 50 years with no loss to a Big 10 team (unless you count Penn State, but they were an independent in 1982). Funny, Michigan play UGA in Ann Arbor in 1958 and 1965 but WOULD NOT PLAY in Athens. And they probably never will for fear of an a$$-whipping.

The desire to play Michigan is outdated. For at least the last 10 years of the Lloyd Carr era, Michigan was overrated in the preseason polls. The first couple teams to beat them always won huge national respect (even though Michigan would later prove to be just mediocre). Meanwhile, beating the 5th best team in the SEC didn’t get you much national respect, even though that team could probably beat Michigan. That’s why UGA fans always wanted a shot at Michigan. But now is a new era for Michigan. They won’t be ranked this preseason, and beating them won’t win you any respect.

We beat Michigan the last time we played them. I’m of the school that says play a big team in one fo those off games. We’ve been doing it, and this year we play two, and Tech. ESPN was talking about UF Alabama, and LSU openers. It was embarassing. However, the SEC doesn’t have to be the only ones doing it. Maybe Tech should open with a big game again. They used to do that before they got into the ACC.

Alabama has the VA Tech game, and USC has the NCState game. There are lots of options, let’s just see how it stacks up at the end of the year. That is why we finished ahead of the Techies last year. Our schedule.

(I am a season ticket holder.) After complaining endlessly over the last 20 years to Vince & Damon about the weak non-conference schedule, THIS STORY ABOUT A MICHIGAN MATCHUP WAS MUSIC TO MY EARS.

To have this whole thing evaporate is highly disappointing, and really makes me wonder why the AJC ever mentioned it in the first place. Shouldn’t journalistic standards prevent publishing hearsay and rumors….what was the purpose of running this?

like ive said before, its great to keep up with RICHT’S football team. if they can get by and should get by the early nonconference games, i could only assume the toughest battles would be against fl and tech(never know in the sec though). with a great o line finally and will be a stellar, experienced defense(wondered about d backs but has a top one or two ranking in my opinion in the country in recruits), i see them as the vol’s championship team right after p. manning… complete and sound. if not, coach richt will have no choice but to get of willie. with that said, thwg but will be rooting for ya til the game. p.s. watch out for wide out and/or slot receiver t. king. i hope he’s ready to shine opposite green and “sure catch moore.” –yes let it be known… tech fan created the best nickname for a legit and potential nfl player(maybe just a special team guy or third man on right team).
