Heaven Between the Hedges: Greatest games I’ve seen

Nearly four years ago, shortly after I first started writing this blog, I got to talking with my brothers, Jon and Tim, about some of the most memorable wins we’d been fortunate enough to witness Between the Hedges in the four decades we’d been regularly going to games.

We decided to list the greatest ones we’d ever seen (which, of course, lets out any memorable games that took place before the mid-1960s). Four years on, we’ve tweaked the list a bit, including the addition what many folks consider one of the greatest games ever at Sanford Stadium from 2007.

So here is the New and Improved King Brothers List of the Greatest Games We’ve Seen Between the Hedges:

Georgia over Alabama, 18-17, in 1965: ABC was on hand to televise this game, only the second TV appearance the Dogs had made (the first being the Jan. 1, 1960 Orange Bowl). This was back during a period when Alabama was our opening game, and the last time the Dogs had won was during the 1959 SEC championship season with Fran Tarkenton. After that, the whippings by the Tide had become somewhat expected. And with Alabama the defending national champions, not many folks looked for anything different in ’65, the beginning of Vince Dooley’s second season. But the Dogs were hanging tough and behind only 17-10 in the fourth quarter. I’d gone to get a Coke and was walking back to my seat when I heard someone say, “The Bear better do something, or Bama could lose this thing.” Sure enough, moments later came the legendary flea-flicker from Kirby Moore to Pat Hodgson to Bob Taylor. And then, with the 2-point play pass to Hodgson, Georgia had one of its most memorable victories ever.

Georgia over Alabama, 21-0, in 1976: The outcome of the game between the No. 6 Bulldogs and the No. 10 Crimson Tide was never really in question, and the Sanford Stadium crowd smelled the Bear’s blood from the start. This was the loudest I ever heard a Sanford crowd over over an entire game until they enclosed the east end of the stadium. Manhandling Bama, which was coming off five straight conference crowns, just wasn’t done in those days. One of the toughest tickets ever in Athens. Folks camped out overnight on the tracks and, as I’ve related before, my Dad ended up watching from the bridge. Matt Robinson and Ray Goff alternated running Georgia’s veer option offense and the Junkyard Dawgs defense held Bama to just 49 yards rushing. The post-game celebration in Athens was wild, with police having to close Milledge Avenue.

Georgia over Georgia Tech, 29-28, in 1978: Georgia had fallen behind the hated Jackets 20-0 when freshman quarterback Buck Belue was inserted into the game. With a little under 6 minutes left, Tech still led 28-21, but Buck led the Dogs 84 yards for a score and a two-point conversion and the Bulldog Nation fell in love with the player from Valdosta, long before the “Run Lindsay” play in Jacksonville.

Georgia over South Carolina, 13-10, in 1980: Herschel vs. George Rogers. The undefeated Dogs against South Carolina’s best team ever. A national television audience (back when that still meant something). It all came down basically to two plays: Herschel’s 76-yard third-quarter run for a TD, and Rogers’ fourth-quarter fumble when the Cocks were threatening. Rogers may have won the Heisman that year, but the freshman from Wrightsville outshone him that day with 219 yards and a touchdown to Rogers’ 168 yards and a fumble.

Georgia over Clemson, 13-7, in 1982: The first night game at Sanford Stadium after the lights were put back in, this was a match-up of the two previous national champions — back when a rivalry didn’t get any bigger than Georgia-Clemson. Herschel, who was injured, was mostly a decoy that night. The game itself wasn’t all that memorable — except for the fact that we won — but the atmosphere was absolutely electric.

Georgia over Clemson, 26-23, in 1984: The Dogs had battled back from trailing 20-6 at halftime to the No. 2 team in the country. Only 11 seconds left and the two teams were tied 23-23 back before the overtime rule. Then Kevin Butler kicks that 60-yarder so high and long that I think it went into orbit. One of the biggest ovations I’ve ever heard a Georgia score get.

Georgia over Clemson, 27-12, in 1991: One of the high points of the Ray Goff years, as the Dogs upset the No. 6 Tigers, who went on to win the ACC Championship, in a night game on national TV. Key plays were Georgia safety Mike Jones stripping the ball after a Clemson back had run 54 yards, and Eric Zeier setting up a TD with a 59-yard bomb to Arthur Marshall.

Georgia over Georgia Tech, 51-7, in 2002: A complete and total butt-kicking. One of the best days ever in Sanford Stadium and one of the best wins of the Mark Richt era so far.

Georgia over LSU, 45-16, in 2004: One of the best Georgia crowds ever and, again, total domination, this time over the defending national co-champion. Five touchdown throws by David Greene against an opponent that really mattered.

Georgia over Auburn, 45-20, in 2007: The first “Blackout” game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Sanford Stadium crowd as excited as when the Dawgs burst through that banner in those black jerseys. Still, the Tigers made it a game, taking a 20-17 lead, before Georgia scored 28 unanswered points.

No Jim Donnan-era game made the list, but the 21-10 end of the losing streak against Tennessee in 2000 would have except for what happened after the game. It wasn’t enough for the fans to take down the Sanford Stadium goalposts; they trashed our own stadium, ripping up the hedges in an act so mindless I still don’t understand it. So that one stays off the list.

Have you seen any other home wins that you rank among the greatest ever?

Georgia Clemson 1982. I sat down in the middle of the Clemson crowd and ragged them all night. One guy threw a punch at me, I side stepped and he went straight into the hedges on the hill, back then there was a hill for sitting. A Clarke County cop hauled him out and threw him out of the game. I tone down my taunting these days, I could get killed.

For a single play or moment, the Kevin Butler field goal really stands out. A bomb going off in the stadium could not have been any louder than the crowd. Many may not remember this, but Clemson had an incredible return on the ensuing kickoff but the clock ran out. Danny Ford was protesting there should have been 1 second remaining. If that would have happened, then Clemson would have had the opportunity to kick a long range, game tying field goal.

Odd, that UGA puts that much emphasis on Tennessee. Fans tore their own stadium up celebrating a win over a team we hardly recognize it seems. 10 years is a long time to lose to the same team. Is their no other win against Tenn at Sanford that warrants a big win? What about 1981 when Dooley called time out with UGA isdide the 10 yard line leading 37-0 with a minute or so to go in the game? He promptly called a pass play. Does that not merit a big win?

My first night game was the 1991 Clemson game, but my favorite game was the beat down of LSU in 2004. This years LSU game should be good hopefully they have forgotten us hanging 50 on them in Death Valley.

Great memories for sure!! The Bama game in 76 is at the top of the list for me w/the Blackout against Auburn coming in a close second. What made the 76 game more special was going w/my dad and slipping through the main gate w/only one ticket.

Bill, if you would take your nose out of the air for a minute you might recall that I believe that after the 76 win over bama that they tore the goal posts down and was carrying it around town and that was one of the reasons they had to shut down milledge. Don’t act like what happenned against tenn in 2000 is such a travesty just because it didn’t happen in the old school glory days!

GT fan bragging about 1 quarter. UGA fans looking back at a history of big wins. I can’t say it isn’t fitting.

UGA Clemson ‘91 was a great atmosphere with the Braves winning and fans for both schools pump and doing the chop in the stadium. It may not be the biggest win but it was a very fun day to be in Athens.

Vs GT 2004. When David Greene came back into the game I was in the North endzone and the student section went nuts. He had hurt his thumb, but came back into to lead the dawgs to a perfect record against tech for our class (05 baby most wins ever!!). Reggie Ball in the 4th was also priceless. Still ask every bumble bee i see to count to four for me. =)

GA – Auburn 1996. The four overtime, 56-49 win over one of our oldest rivals in our 100th meeting with them still stands as the most fun I’ve had in Sanford Stadium (although the 1st blackout was close…)
And who can forget the classic picture from that game of UGA V taking a swipe at the Auburn receiver that ventured to close to our fearsome mascot. GATA! Tech sucks!

Huh?

Great list Bill, but I would like to add the 2006 win over the Techies if I may. The set up was absolutely perfect. The Techies had been ranked as high as #15 in the land at one point that year and were 9-2 going in to the game. Georgia had already lost 4 games in the middle of the season. The Techies had been running their big fat ignorant mouths ALL YEAR LONG. What could possibly go wrong? Doh!!! The look on their acne ridden faces after that game was absolutely priceless and I will never forget it. It should serve as a warning to the Techies about what happens to them when they start feeling real good about themselves and trashing their big brother to the east, but it won’t of course. They simply never learn their lot in life. Oh well. Their pain is my pleasure. Works for me.

Florida over Georgia, 52-17, in 1995: With renovations to Jacksonville’s old Gator Bowl Stadium underway, this traditional neutral-site showdown was held on the schools’ campuses for the first time in over 60 years in 1994 and 1995. After winning big in Gainesville the previous season, the undefeated Gators hoped to repeat the feat in Athens against a struggling Bulldog team led by soon-to-be fired coach Ray Goff.

The Gators did win again in relatively easy fashion. However, the contest was made memorable by Florida’s Steve Spurrier, who often sought retribution as the Gator head coach for the many frustrating defeats he’d suffered against Georgia as the Gator QB (see 1966 UF-UGA game).

The Gators led 45-17 with 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter when Spurrier called a flea-flicker pass for a touchdown. After the game, Spurrier admitted that he had wanted to be the first opponent to hang “half a hundred” on the Bulldogs in their own stadium because “we heard no one had ever done that before.” The record of 52 points scored on Georgia between the hedges still stands.

best game in Sanford by far and away 2005 GA AU where the pups choked away a game giving up a 4th and 12. 31-30 AU and truly one of the best games I have ever seen. Second nomination would be Richts first year in 01 when the dawgs had the ball on the 8 yardline with seconds left and ran a running play and time ran out. One of the all time classic calls in Sanford Stadium history.

It was called back, but it sure was like an explosion at Sanford Stadium! Kevin Bulter in 84 when he kicked that 62 yarder. Larry Munson was speechless after he yelled “Oh my God!” Lauren Smith had to come in and say, “He made it with distance to spare!”

Good list for Sanford, but one of the best was at Jax in 1997 – Donnan’s first year and UF was favored by 20. When Robert Edwards was streaking down the sideline in the 4th quarter to seal the win, the UGA side of the stands never sat down or stopped screaming the rest of the way to the 37-17 point spread swap. I don’t think we got out of the stadium until about 2 hours after the game. That was bar far the best UGA-UF game since 1980. RTR…care to give us you real name behind your handle? Didn’t think so. Now tell us about those recent not so significant NCAA rules violations. LOL.

Bill, Dooley incited that field storming after the TN game. I agree, it was an embarassment the way the fans were on the field before the game ended and I think it was McMichael who had to shoo them off, but before the game Dooley told the media repeatedly that the goal posts have never come down at Sanford but that could change after the TN game. TN had the big win streak but Georgia was heavily favored. But Dooley basically told the students to storm the field.

#1 Bama fan,

Proud fan of the only school in NCAA history to lose 21 games in one day.

I admit, I stole this from the other blog………………………..

Ramble On, rumor has it that Vandy’s players wanted to make rings with “24-22″ on them but coach Johnson (the one that doesn’t scare small children) told them not to be such panty wastes and to act like they had been there before. Apparently Vandy football doesn’t revolve around beating Georgia. Go figure, eh?

The most enjoyable game I remember in my 62 years was the “Run Lindsey, Run” game. So much was on the line and victory was 1,000 yards away!

`I was at the 1991 ,2002,2004,2007 games, And don’t forget the game between Georgia and Tenn 21-10 The posts came down and the hedges did too.

I didn’t have any problem with the goal posts coming down after the win over UT. it was the trashing of the Hedges that burned me up. It’s bad enough when louts from the Trade School do it, but our own fans? That was too much.

I think my favorite game was the 2002 game with tech-the final was 51-7- If Mark Richt was not a christian it could have easily been 100-7.

I really enjoyed this year, it was a helluva good time. But I would have to say 1974. Dawgs favored by 17, colder than hell and not a dawg (sic) left in the sandbox by halftime. I think 34-14 was the final. Ahhh, good times, good times.

No argument there Bill. Those were some lean years and luckily we’re a lot more used to winning games since.

Best game at Sanford was the Auburn blackout. Keep ‘em coming.

damngooddawg – you must be related to Vince. I’ll bet that was the longest touchdown in history (by a factor of 10) and South Carolina State has the toughest quaterback you’ve ever faced.

and BTW Urban – I enjoyed that 49-10 game as well. You rock, leg humpers.

Now, so much for the wins. How about the most memorable losses? Start with Ga.-Georgia Tech, 2008. Georgia is destined to be the perennial loser.

the tenn-uga game was a huge one to me. so huge in fact
that i “acquired” the game ball during the rush onto the
field. i took it back to picture day the following year to get
some autographs andwhen i told randy mcmichael what
ball it was, he said i better get out of there with it b/c uga
may try to get it back!
u gotta rank that game up there b/c it ended the losing
streak.
