Since many of you probably spent your holiday weekend away from the computer (if not, you need to rethink what a holiday is all about), I figured I’d dispense with the usual poll today and instead catch up on some interesting Bulldogs-related reading you might have missed while you were blowing things up or grilling and barbecuing.
The Macon Telegraph takes a detailed look at UGA’s largely inexperienced wide receiver corps, which is down to just six scholarship players (including two incoming freshmen) as the season approaches. Last year, 18 different players caught passes for Georgia, but the folks who accounted for 55 percent of those receptions won’t be on the active roster this year. As QB Joe Cox puts it: “Everybody’s going to have to step up this year. With six guys, you never know what can happen, and you’ve got to have everybody ready to play.” …
Loran Smith devotes one of his Athens Banner-Herald columns to new Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox and his small-town values, including discipline. When Fox took his daughter home to Garden City, Kan., to be baptized, Smith notes, “his daddy admonished him that he needed to ‘Cut the grass.’ Mark was 35 years old, a successful coach with a family, and he gets that directive on a visit home! ‘I laughed, but got out the mower and cut the grass,’ Mark grinned.” …
The Banner-Herald also examines the question of who will end up backing up starters Bryan Evans and Reshad Jones at safety with former backup John Knox now gone from UGA. Besides Quintin Banks, the former backup who’s returning from two knee injuries, Nick Williams appears to have returned to safety after a stint at linebacker, and Sanders Commings, Baccari Rambo, Makiri Pugh and incoming freshman Shawn Williams could get a look. Banks notes that everyone is working hard in the offseason this year — apparently in contrast with last year. “Everyone comes every day here to work,” Banks says.” A lot of things have changed from last year to this year as far as doing all the work and turning up the heat at safety.” …
Pat Forde of ESPN.com weighs in on hottest rivalry games coming up this season. He has Texas-Oklahoma first, Tennesee-Florida second and the UGA-Florida hatefest in third place.

I think i Troupe is going to be a big part of things this year. He could be the “possession guy” to fill in for Durham. Also our reciever rotationusually consisted of about 6 guys on a regular basis. We did throw to ore guys but mostly in mop-up/blowout situations. We need to throw to those tightends and run the ball anyway to help take pressure off of the “D”.

Doesn’t matter who Georgia has at WR. The best secondary in the country won’t let any of them catch much of anything anyway: Joe Haden, Jenoris Jenkins, Major Wright, Will Hill, and their Gator DB buddies. Go Gators. I just love coming on here and spoiling your Georgia blog.

Hey saint simmons, that 45-42 last year isn’t near as funny as that 51-7 score a few years back. I actually felt sorry for you guys that day – NOT! 51-7!!!!!! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. While you’re laughing, try on 1-7!! We own tech and will start a new streak this year.

Hootch, if Saint Simons can’t spoil the blog, what makes you think you can.
I thought we had too many recievers last year. No one but AJ and MoMass could get in a groove. I think with the WR’s less is better so long as the injury bug does not make an appearance. I want to see Orson and Marlon on the field.

Hootch,
I heard “Cops” is now where corch meyers scouts his db’s in stead of actual high school football. they look for guys who can scale a wall while holding a flat screen in ocala. The motto for this year’s gaytors team is “don’t tase me, bro!”

I think we’re set with AJ and M.Moore as 1 & 2, but we need for King and Troupe to step up. The freshmen should be a bonus.

A.J. Green, Marlon Brown, Orson Charles, Tavarres King, Israel Troup, Tony Wilson, Mike Moore, Aron White, Bruce Figgins and backs out of the backfield. Granted these are not all wide receivers but you don’t just throw to wide receives you scheme against what the defense gives you and you create uneven matchups. There is a ton of talent in this group and they can make Cox look great.

It’s always odd to me that it’s always noted everyone is working “harder” after a down year. Why is that in contrast to last year where was that focus? The reserves that were not even remotely able to even hold places for the fallen last year were the ones that should have been going balls out in spring practice. Let’s hope they got the message last year.
If there is one thing Urban does well it’s getting his team ready to play.

Why should you work hard when you have been annointed the pre-season number one? Do a couple of pushups, run a forty yard dash. Then give interviews to fawning media and sign autographs on body parts of hot co-eds.

speaking of WR’s, what’s up with tony wilson #26. i’ve noticed that he is not on the 2009 roster. has he left the team or what. he is a big part of our running game when healthy. dude was having an outstanding spring and was destin for a break out season. WR’s is the least of my consern though. we need RB’s to step up and run the ball behind that gritty, mean, athletic, and nasty OL. GO DAWGS…..

Tony Wilson left the team at the same time Bruce Figgins and Justin Houston were suspended. Apparently, rather than take a suspension, he was medically disqualified because of a slow-healing injury.

It looks like the dogs will have plenty at receiver and DB, and every where else that it counts. In the words of Vince Dooley, Florida is so good, we don’t even deserve to play them. They already have us beat. I don’t know if we can pass or run on them, they have the edge on us on specail teams, and we will be lucky to stay on the field with them. On the other hand, they will thow at will and we can never stop the running backs. We will be hard put to just slow them down a bit.

Mick needs to stay off that scooter in Athens! Scooter patrol, next on “Cops”. Six recievers seems like a lot, unless you want to line up three or four wide with an empty backfield. If someone pulls a hammy or twists a knee it could get pretty dicey. I look for Orson to play WR a good bit.

Let’s see… really fast guys that can catch the ball. We’re covered. Bottom line, what they need to step up and do is block, run routes, and hold on to the ball. I think last season proved beyond any reasonable doubt. That bright stars don’t amount to much, if you can’t field a fundamentally sound team.

Does anyone know where the “grown-ups” blog is? I get tired of hearing about who’s players are thugs, and who’s won 7 in a row, 45-42, 51-7….PLEASE!
Tuesday thoughts…
1. Climbing walls with the tv and “don’t taze me ‘bro” was funny. But remember, just like at UGA and every other school with a major program, the media LOVES to sensationalize player behavior and the coaching staff is trying to babysit @100 young men. UGA, UF, AL, GT….you’re going to have a few incidents from time to time. Myer, like Richt and most other coaches, doesn’t appear to crave the THUG image that Miami cultivated some years back (laughed my arse off when those smack-talking, camouflage wearing jerks got spanked by PSU in the NC game)
2. The only receiver losses that bother me are MM and Durham. The other guys (Goodman, Harris, Wilson) really didn’t contribute much on the field last year. I predict we do well enough with AG and MM, followed by Troupe and TK. The young kids will try to woork into the rotation, but I don’t expect either one of them to be AG jr.
3. My guess is no NC for UF or any other SEC team this year. UF looks loaded, but I suspect that we’ll have a BIG12-PAC10 game for the NC this year. Say USC-UT? Just a guess…
Okay, that’s it for me this morning…

After the UGA-Okla State game, it will be interesting to see if the Big 12 is still in the running for a NC. My guess is that the Big 12 won’t be in the running. Just my opinion, of course.
