On the offchance you haven’t read enough about Joe Cox, Bulldogs Blog has assembled quotes from a bunch of the quarterback’s teammates and his head coach about why Cox is viewed as the team’s leader despite not having much game experience. …
Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com joins the growing number of prognosticators picking the Dogs to take second place in the SEC East. Says Dodd: “The last time the expectations were this low, 2005, Georgia won the SEC East. It’s going to take a win over Florida to do it, so a division title isn’t likely. But 10 wins out of this group isn’t out of the question.” …

If Pete Carroll was uga hc Murray would be the starter because Carroll doesn’t believe in putting loyalty before winning championships even if that means starting a freshman over a senior. If anyone believe that Joe Cox is a better qb than Aaron Murray they are kidding themselves.

the posts about Nesbit are just laughable. The kid can’t play a full game to save his life. Dwyer is a beast I will give you that. But to say the SEC is overrated is even more laughable. Who has one the last 3 national championships? The SEC. Who has won more National Championships since 1990? The SEC. Unless you are willing to look at the facts and speak to them, don’t post anymore.
If you want to just post things that you know will get people worked up, go ahead, because you obviously don’t have much to live for then.

Lets not forget about Logan Gray.. he’s a good QB at his own right. He’s much faster and strong arm than the two, imo. I would like to see Logan coming in on few series like we did with Shock/Greene. Joe will prove everybody wrong. Don’t get me wrong, I love the problem we have at QB. Maybe Murray will get some series if we are to get him game ready w/Logan for next season. We shall see, brah..

If there is competition at QB this year it will be from Logan Grey, who has a ton of athletic ability and has longer in the system than the two freshmen. Even if redshirted, Murray or Mettenberger will start for three years before going pro. The QB position is much different than RB. The QB need time and experience reading Defenses. If Murray sees the field this year it will be because we are in serious trouble or have had an injury to Cox or Grey. I’m not saying Murray won’t be a better QB than the other two in the end, just not this season.

The other coaches in the SEC says UGAs offensive line during the past two years haven’t been intimidating and wont knock you off the ball. Yes Markie boy has gawdy wins however those big games he just simply cant win. Timmy Teebs… I respect your opinion. But, I have to disagree on some degree. Stacy Searels did a heck of job with bunch of frosh these last two seasons. As you know, he shuffled few linemen around due to bug injuries. I think the o-line has seasoned and all but one will be healthy by fall camp.. Josh Davis had two shoulders surg may not be able to participate. Searles’ beasts will be blowing bodies off the line. And I hope Searels will never leave Athens.

Timmy, when it’s hard to keep an experienced OL up front (various attrition factors)it’s hard to knock anyone off the ball. When your starting first and second year guys they haven’t beefed up and are still learning the scheme of things and technique.

samaondog you are 85% right. searels is an outstanding o line coach, and the offense could have been LOST games without him(other 15 was from the skill positions from mathew and knowshon to cox’s high school teammate and big green). like ive stated on junkyard’s blog… i grew up hating uga, but i cant hate richt and the progam today. the defense and special teams should be up to par for uga’s standards, and the offense as a whole while get a great boost from the o-line. cox is the man, but we will all just see opening game. good luck…

……I’m not sold on Joe Cox as the best option either Tony but I’ve warmed up a great deal to Logan Gray.He looked good in spring practice.I’ve said it many times on this blog that I think the Ward/Shockley version of CMR’s offense is outstanding.A QB who can run and throw coupled with our RB and WR talent brings a smile to my face just thinking about it.I admit to doubting whether Gray could be the guy because they had him punt returning…..but then I remembered Charlie Ward started off at FSU as their punter!!The kids seem to like Joe though…everyone calls him a leader so I can see that his teammates respect the kid.Whether are not he can get it done on the field remains to be seen. His attributes seem great for a coach one day.Gut feeling tells me Cox is scrappy enough to stay in rotation all year but Gray will blossom into the next stud while the freshman take a redshirt…point of concern though…injuries of course..that’s a wildcard that could determine how the QB situation plays out….Who ever get’s the nod will be getting their first significant amount of PT so anything could happen.

Tony,
How in the world do you know that Murray is the best QB on the team? Right now, he’s not. Sorry, but he’s not that experienced, he doesn’t have the respect of the team the way Cox does, and he’s undersized. I think he’ll eventually be an amazing passer for us with that lightning quick release of his, but Cox HAS NEVER LOST A GAME AS A STARTER. We are absolutely set with him at that position, and we’ll utilize Gray every now and again to run funky plays taking advantage of his athleticism.
Now my prediction is that Murray does see the field in mop-up duty this year, but Mett redshirts. That way next year you have Jr. Gray, Soph Murray, and RsFR Mett all lined up for a three-way competition for the job. Even if Murray wins out the job next year, you can bet that Gray will be on the field a lot, ala Shockley.

For the first time since probably 2002, we have a seasoned, experienced offensive line that will not be dominated by freshmen. This means Cox will not have to be Superman to win games. If our running backs come through, this could be a very solid team. I personally think Stacy Searels is one of the best coaches in the country and I hope he stays in Athens for a long, long time.

Anybody old enough to remember Vince would recruit QBs and if they didn’t pan out he would turn them into defensive ends and tight ends? Be hard to do that these days but if Mettenberger flounders he has the body to maybe pull it off.

Tony, Richt’s honor is what makes QB’s sign with UGA. If he dumped Cox this year in favor of Murray, what are the odds that Mettenberger sticks it out until Murray leaves? I bet those odds go down considerably. Do you think another QB ever signs and stays when a better one signs afterwards? No. Leave well enough alone guy.
Saint Simons…you are not an idiot because you are a tech fan (though that certainly doesn’t help), you are however an idiot for thinking Dwyer and Nesbitt will both finish in the top 5 in the Heisman. I guess you are planning on Tebow, Bradford, and McCoy all dying before December. Good call! Even if they are they are both successful, one takes stats from the other…see genius?
