A lot of Georgia fans are excited about incoming freshman Branden Smith, the highly rated cornerback who Mark Richt also plans to use some at wide receiver. David Hale of the Bulldogs Blog talks to Smith about the difficulty of learning two positions and why he’s up for the challenge.
Senior receiver Michael Moore, who knows how tough it is to learn just one position, figures the offensive coaches might give Smith a special package of plays rather than asking him to learn the whole offense.
Smith, who played wide receiver, cornerback and kick returner in high school, brings up another aspect of playing two ways, pointing out that working with receivers like A.J. Green and learning what they do should help him on defense. “That’s one reason why Champ Bailey was one of the best in the game, because he played offense and defense,” Smith says. “Playing offense, you find tips that receivers do and playing defense you can get a step ahead of the offensive player when you know all the moves he’s going to make.”
Easier said than done, but the kid makes a good point. And with only six scholarship receivers on the roster, the Dogs are looking to get anybody who can catch a ball out on the field this fall.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see him back receiving punts some, either.
What do you think? Should Smith be eased into this two-way thing, concentrating primarily on learning cornerback as a true freshman? Or would it be wasting a valuable resource not to have him working at receiver as soon as possible?

It sounds like B.Smith is up for the challenge, but I think the coaches need to be careful not to throw too much at him. That being said I do think even in a limited basis, working with the offense should only help make him a better defender.

let him swing both ways! we haven’t had a dominating CB since Champ left. If he can pickup both sides of the ball as a freshman, imagine what he will be able to do in 2 years!
The more experience, the better off we are!

Only the Coaches will know that. The Coach that mostly recuited him might know more about what he is able to take in. Anyone that can take double teams off AJ would be a plus. However I really feel like some of the other receivers are going to step up. They are better than the stats.

Heck if I know. I do know this though, we have wide receivers. We have a lot of wide receivers. We only have a few solid CB’s though. And the CB position is of high concern to me this year. So on paper I say leave him at CB. But if he’s so good that he can help us at wide receiver over everyone else we have at the position, well then…that’s not really a bad thing is it.

I think that other than a few plays here and there on offense we need him on special teams returning kicks (pathetic last year) and playing corner. But our coaches get paid quite a bit to determine these type of things.

A VERY small package of plays, yes, but not the whole offense. That will give other coaches one more thing to prepare for, and also be proof to future recruits that if you’re a stud, you may get in on both sides of the ball.
If this kid can develop into a lock down corner, that is much more important though, because those are much tougher to find than quality WRs. We already have some quality WRs anyway.

Also if Smith wants to be a 1st rounder someday (and he probably does) thenhe should to be a shut down corner. Not many WR’s go in the first round unless Matt Millen is the GM of your team. I would love to see of the Donnan-type tunnel screens, rocket reverses/sweeps, bubble screens on the outside with Smith but not him spreading out and running 10 outs. Let him lock up one side of the field on “D” like Champ or Deion. And return kicks/punts. He can impose his will on D! On offense he would be piece and we already have a stable of receivers.Let’s get him the ball on few plays out in space and let him make something magic happen.

Kick returns? DB? RB? You name it the kid needs the ball in his hands

Yes, he is an exceptional talent and young man, but I would prefer that the play just defense his first year so that he can adapt to college life and the football requirements. After he makes the transition, I would like to see UGA have a special package for him. I can see him running reverses, tunnel screens, and and other routes that gets him out in space. He has incredible speed and will be a special player at UGA. I am very excited about the future of this young man. It is going to be very difficult to account for him, A.J. Green, and all the other talented players at UGA. Go DAWGS.

Because he will have to run his tail off making up for our incompetent coaching at LB, it would be fooling to think he’d have the energy to also play on offense.
Perhaps fielding kicks, but lets not waste time with gimmicks on Off…besides, we’re looking pretty good at WR.

Why is the usage of Greg Reid the bigger question? He signed with FSU, hence that is an article for Florida papers. Why would Ga citizens be concerned with how out of state schools are going to employee a kid? He is a great talent, but that is not a Georgia issue. In terms of the GT comment, I say thank you Saint Simons. Thank you for your dedication and daily concern for UGA. This guy wakes up every day thinking about UGA. That is so funny to me. What is more amazing to me is that you have 2 or 3 GT fans that post something childish, then they switch screen names and post something else in hopes of getting attention. Notice the usage of words and common syntax. Same pitiful people writing childish stuff on a daily basis. That is pathetic. That obsessive behavior indicates just how superior they view UGA. They attempt to distract people from the topic at hand. It is all about the great B. Williams. He is a future all-American. Go DAWGS……

Suggestion for the GT fans that read UGA blogs on a daily basis: “Please Notice Me”. That would be a very fitting name because of their desperate need to get members of the UGA family to notice them. Before you refute that statement, ask yourself why you are reading and posting on a UGA blog.

Playing a true freshman as a cornerback is as desperate as you get. The only position more difficult to play as a true freshman is quarterback. Is GA really that desperate at CB and WR that they need a true freshman to go both ways at those positions? And why do you trust CMR? He has done as little with so much talent as anyone in the history or college football. I would be very nervous about asking too much of this kid as freshman and any decision CMR makes. But probably doesn’t matter anyway, GA is looking at losing 4-5 games in this rebuilding year, this kid will go pro after his second year, and GA will be left with nothing but braging rights about what great pros their players make. Meanwhile FL wins another NC and a couple of SEC championships.

Having just read about him and not having seen him play, I don’t know. If the coaches think he can help the team, then I’m all for it.
Quite a recruiting month for the Dawgs! A lot of quantity and some serious quality as well. With Owens, Atkins, and Weston graduating… I’m sure the coaches would like to secure 2 of the 3 big name Defensive Lineman from in state and it probably makes sense to get a JUCO DL with this class, if they can get in school and help the team.
That probably leaves us with only a couple of scholarships, so I’d like to see the DAWGS be extremely selective and keep those for potential superstars like Mack Brown, Jeff Luc, Neiron Ball, or Lamarcus Joyner.

N.O. NO! He need to decide if he wants to play reciever or a safety at the next level; not both. It’s about time for Mark Richt to start making better decisions for this program. He messed up this past season by not running Moreno enough in critical games, but now he want to overload a freshman by making him play 3 positions.
Brandon need to focus on being the best safety he can be and leave the catching to the recievers. We can’t afford to get this kid injured.
Marlon Brown, Orson Charles and Rantavious Wooten signed their names on the dotted line to catch the football not stand on the sideline to watch a safety catch the football.

the major difference in B.Smith in 2009 and Champ in 1998 is that we have in 2009 alot of good recievers and at least one proven great receiver. In 1998 the best pass catchers was Larry Brown,Tony Small,Thad Parker, etc. Those were good dwags but not exactly AJ Green, Moore, T.King,Aron White, etc. Champ was playing out of necessity more than as a luxury.

Yes, Janoris (not faster than a taser) Jenkins played as a true freshman. That is because FL was desperate at corner, but FL didn’t ask him to play WR also. He is a very special athelete to start as a true freshman at corner in the SEC and excel. He would be the exception rather than the rule. The year before Joe Haden started at corner as a true freshman, and he didn’t excel, despite the fact that he was also a tremendous talent. But Haden was ready to play his second year, and that is probably best case scenario for Smith. So in case you missed my points, (i) you will be lucky if Smith gives you 2 good years (sophmore and junior), (ii) CMR is stupid – especially if he tries to play smith both ways his freshman year, and (iii) GA must be desperate at WR and CB to be asking a true freshman to play both positions.

I don’t think Georgia has anyone that compares to Percy Harvin. Just being honest. Just b/c Wooten came out of Florida doesn’t mean he is the next Percy. Nor Carlton Thomas. Check their 40 yd dash scores. Harvin was a 4.3. Neither of our boys are 4.3 runners. Florida just has more speed than us, plain and simple. Our fastest player(I think) is still Bryan Evans.
Florida had(has)two athletes in Tebow and Harvin that we probably won’t see for decades. Granted, one was dumb as a rock but still a football specimen. And Tebow is a legend and I can’t deny it one bit.

Smurf, the way you feel about Tech beating GA, is the same way FL feels about GA beating FL Ouch. It is something that just shouldn’t happen. The biggest difference is that Tech will have a great shot of putting 2 wins in a row on you this year. You can call one win an upset, but when they do it 2 years in a row they take control of the rivalry. GA won’t have a chance to do that with FL until 2011 (because GA’s first chance to take one will be 2010).

I suggest the same for fans from other schools. Commenting on a blog of a school other than your own is basically moronic. It’s gotten to the point where I have simply stopped reading the blogs because of all the irrelevant and stupid comments. Many of those comments are by folks who obviously never went to college in the first place and then purport to know something about what actually goes on on a college campus. tony- i dont think anyone cares for your opinion since you don’t even know what position the kid plays. He is not a safety. He is a corner. If you don’t know the difference maybe the UGA “blawg” is not the place for you. Also, for all of you who are saying that UGA must be desperate if they are asking a freshmen to play both ways, he has not won a starting position at either spot yet. If he does then it will be because he is the best on the field, not because we are desperate. I personally believe that he will be able to play both ways because he will not be required to play the majority of downs either way. Not only do we have other highly capable recievers, we are also good at CB with Miller, Commings, Boykin, Cuff, etc. Smith will be able to provide depth at both positions and hopefully will become a shutdown corner in his years at UGA. don’t be a hater,
While I will be the first to admit we have lost more games to the Gators than I care to remember, comparing Florida’s recent series domination over UGA to UGA’s series domination over Tech is like comparing apples and oranges. UGA has ALWAYS dominated Tech as is evident by the series record of 59-39 (Georgia leads). Florida has RECENTLY dominated UGA. (46-38 series record UGA leads) Flordia is 16-3 against UGA since 1990, but Georgia was 15-5 against UF in the 70’s and 80’s.
The point being is that UF is currently a great program, but prior to 1990 UF was a sellar dweller in the SEC. But more importantly real UF fans know this and are humble, while the bandwagon fans think football history started in 1990.
On a side note: UGA has beaten UF each season after the gators won the MNC (1997 & 2007). Will 2009 be any different?

I say let CMR, and the staff put him where he belongs. I trust them, and HERE IS WHY.
In 2002, they needed someone to play DE, cause we needed a rusher to replace Charles Grant, CMR said, “hey, this pollack kid at fullback, he plays hard, give him a shot”–Nuff Said.
Sean Jones played QB in highschool, Thomas Davis was a linebacker, marcus howard, was a LB, and yet the staff found a place to put them….IN CMR I TRUST.

yes, pollack was a fullback. Go the the Clemson game in 2002, on 4th and 1, and see who was at fullback clearing the way for Musa……it was #47..the coaches had the brains to let him play that one play, but only cause they had moved him earlier in the camp to DE from the FB position….the next week he made the “snatch” at SC, and the rest is history. The coaches will do what is best with Brandon Smith, just like any other player who can contribute.

Voice Of Reason, know one cares for your opinion. Safety or corner, he need to play one position and let A.J Green, Rantaviouss Wooten, Marlon Brown, and Orson Charles do the catching. By the way, Aaron Murray should be our #1 qb.

As a whole this kid should stick to defense and learning the CB position for UGA. However, how difficult can it be to learn to run a go route and a deep post. If he has the speed, use it to stretch the field. Two to four plays per game this season would not be to difficult.
