P.M. Roundup: Ranking the SEC stadiums

Having traveled to every SEC school at least once for football games, SouthernPigskin.com columnist Jeremy Hillman has decided to rank the 12 stadiums, taking into account their size, noise level, aesthetics and home field advantage based on the team’s home record the past nine years. Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium comes in first on the list, with UGA’s Sanford Stadium in second place. That’s based on placing second in size, sixth in noise, first in aesthetics (well, of course!) and third in home field advantage. …

So Evan Berry, the little brother of Tennessee’s Eric Berry, has announced that he plans to play football for the Vols. Only catch is, he hasn’t even started high school yet. It’s not so ridiculous that a 13-year-old is announcing where he intends to go to college and play football. What’s ridiculous is that it’s actually being reported as if it were a serious verbal commitment for the class of 2013. …

DawgSports’ T. Kyle King takes an amusing look at Bulldog rivalries, stereotypes and the fine points of taunting. (By the way, as I’ve noted here before, I agree that Auburn is Georgia’s biggest rival.)

And don’t forget to check out my look at the two sides of legendary sideline man Loran Smith. If your blood runs red and black, as Brook Whitmire says, I think you’ll enjoy it.

There’s no place like the SWAMP on a fall Saturday for football, except maybe in heaven!

What a media slut, Babe Kiffin will stage anything to get himself (and UT)in the news.

I would think UF would be UGA’s biggest rival. I like the UGA-AUB rivaly but the Auburn-Alabama rivaly is cleary the biggest for me.

Too bad the Florida/Georgia game is not played on a home and home basis. The last time Florida visited Athens, they were really intimidated by the place. They only scored 50 some points. Then Georgia came to the Swamp the next year and were beaten soundly. Yep, the Swamp is the place to be if you love college football, especially in the late afternoons or evenings when Gators are roaming for food to chomp on.

Lets put a little perspective on that epic GA/FL 1995 matchup at Sanford. That year Florida was 9-0 in the SEC and played for the national title. Georgia beat 3 SEC teams that year, SC, Vandy, and Kentucky. Finished 6-6 and fired the coach.

Hey Tampa, why do you think I want to keep the game in JAX. Until we get some parity, I am asking Touchdown Jesus to intercede. I’d rather keep a beatdown with the occasional win, see UGA-Tech 2008, in Jacksonville and away from our hedges.

My perspective on the 1995 game is we got whipped.

So 13 year old committed to UT. Just another narcissistic youngster with an overblown sense of ego.

Stadium rankings. Doesn’t take into account that Bama is going up to 101,000 next year. As far as noise goes Florida is probably the loudest over the course of a game but all of the big 6 stadiums can be very loud depending on who they are playing and if its a night game. The same stadium can be electric such as when Alabama visited Auburn for the first time ever but can be quiet boring such as when any of us play a double AA team.

When we expand up to 101k I think we will be the loudest at any point in the game simply because of more fans and because we’ll probably have more to cheer about in the immediate future than UT. But as far as constant noise level throughout a game Florida will still be tops.

I’ve always thought LSU was vastly overrated as far as noise goes. They are very quiet when you are dominating them. We should know. We had a 19 game unbeaten streak in the so called “death valley” between 1969 and 2004 when Saban finally beat us. But usually they are very quiet when we come to town given our total domination in that house.

Aesthetics. I can see Georgia being voted no. 1. The stadium is really pretty and has more of a circular type of look and feel to it then the rest. I think the 3rd upper deck also adds something to it.

The outside of Bama’s stadium clearly puts us up there though in terms of aesthetics. The big glass facade and the plaza, the walk of champions and all the statues, nobody else has any of this so I think we’re definitely up there aesthetically.

UT is pretty picturesque as well with its setting on the riverbank. How can you not like that?

Florida is definitely a unique stadium in that the end zone areas look bigger than the between the 20s seating and it doesn’t look like it was put together very well. Doesn’t look very circular and doesn’t look like they planned the expansion very well. I’m not sure I would say its as aesthetically pleasing as the others all though it is definitely unique. The paint scheme at the stadium is hands down the best though so that may have been what the writer was looking at. When its empty and you see the orange and blue seating throughout the stadium from above its a lot nicer looking than they grey, drab look of other stadiums.

Ark has the giant video screen which I believe is the biggest in the world so this one feature makes Ark. stand out in one respect. As far as size goes only 72k they are well behind the big 6 but in 10 years or so they may just end up building up to an 80 or 90k stadium.

I’ve been to South Carolina also. Nice stadium but doesn’t really stand out compared to the big 6. Just a little smaller in everything compared to the others. The cockabooses are cool though.

The rest of the stadiums left are nothing special and the Miss. State stadium? Give me a break.

It is obviously the last day of June. This may be the worst topic I can remember. Please, Mr. King find something out about the dawgs and write about that…in depth. One good blog per day beats 3 or 4 not so good…here is some help, find out how summer conditioning is going for the players. What are they doing differently this year than last year to prepare for the upcoming season. What are there(the players) expectations for the year? What are the coaches expectations? Coach Richt said that he was going to approach the season more like his first season in Athens, how does this change Coach Bobo’s approach, CWM approach, VanHalengers approach? Find out some dirt on OK St that will give us some insight as to what that game will be like. I appreciate you trying to get Georgia on the boards as much as possible, but please try to come up with things more relavent than Stadiums. All the fields are 120 yards long (including enzones), have the same uprights, are the same width, and in the SEC have loud noisey fans, well for the most part.

General Neyland and others,

We’re one step ahead of you guys in the ever escalating recruiting arms race. We’re in the process of cloning Andre Smith, Rolando McClain, Antoine Caldwell, etc.

But we are going to go one step further and engage in sabotage. We’re also going to clone John Parker Wilson but we’re going to sneak him into either the Georgia or Florida signing table on national signing day 18 years from now. That will be one less scholly you will have to use in the arms race. Every little edge counts.

well, i’m glad to see that once again, bill’s incredibly stimulating topic has everyone debating the subject.

once again, people are talking UT football. and, as much as I hate to admit it, Kiffy is doing his job.
if he can coach the way he can stir up interest, look out.

now it is time for a little bedtime story…..

once upon a time, an SEC school hired a “great recruiter” with no college head coaching experience to replace a national championship coach. the program went into the toilet…..and made no noise in the SEC for several years afterwards.

LSU & AUB are much better game day atmospheres.

Each of the 3 times I’ve finished Sanford Stadium it’s been pretty sterile.

Nice stadium, beautiful town and stadium but not much crown noise or crowd noise. Reminds me of a Braves crowd.

Sorry, Tide Rising: a tekkie making fun of anyone’s stadium is extremely juvenile. Hardly a zinger when it’s so far from the truth. And percentage-wise, Duke and Vandy put more butts in the seats than the pompous jackets, and in better stadia.

Gen. Neyland,

No sense cloning the brick thrown through Bill Curry’s window. Next time a coach ticks us off we’re using a grenade launcher and following it up with a blitzkrieg attack. But it may be awhile cause he don’t think Saban is leaving in the middle of the night. He just initiated talks with Bama because he wants his contract extended an extra few years through 2016. Sorry but that just means more torment for Auburn and UT.

Game Day atmosphere Neyland Stadium but game atmosphere would easily be the Swamp! Nobody can beat the pregame atmosphere in Knoxville, it’s not even close and nobody can beat the noise of the Swamp in Gainesville. LSU would my pick for third place.

LSU has the best game day experience then Alabama/Auburn/UGA is a tie. Neyland is an erector set with a bunch of horrible seats. They have about 200+ seats that look directly into the side of the press box. You could only see half the field. What a piece of crap. Knoxville is a trashy place as well. Atmosphere is ok at best. Never been to the Swamp but I have plans to go one day.

South Carolina would be a good environment (they actually show up and arepretty loud when we are there) but it isn’t an on-campus stadium so it gets a vote of uber-lame. Too much like NFL. All college stadiums should be on campus except Tech. Tech should play in the courtyard of the “Historic” Techwood Homes housing project on “legendary” Reggie Ball field, with “epic” ryan stewart urinals, next to the “immortal” Joe Hamilton coke stand.
