P.M. Roundup: SEC East prediction, defending triple option

SouthernPigskin.com picks the Dawgs to finish second to Florida in the SEC East this season, heaping praise on Georgia’s offensive front (”perhaps the top offensive line in college football”) and saying that “a defense filled with veterans has the potential to be very good” though it “badly needs a pass rusher to emerge.” Their conclusion: “Expectations are down a notch after Georgia was preseason number one entering last fall. All things considered, that may be a good thing. With a little less pressure on the team, the Bulldogs could surprise this fall.”

Georgia Sports Blog links to a Navy football blog that examines Georgia’s failed defense of Tech’s triple option last year and concludes that Willie Martinez was using some antiquated defensive concepts designed to stop the old wishbone. However, the Georgia Sports blogger points out that film clips included with the piece show a bigger problem with the Dogs defense: terrible safety play and poor tackling. While I think the Navy blogger may have a point about some of the schemes Georgia used against Tech, I’ve felt all along that the Jackets weren’t doing anything that playing smart assignment football and good tackling fundamentals couldn’t handle. As LSU proved.

It is hard to evaluate schemes when people are both out of position and miss tackles. This seems to be a non-starter debate.

LSU also had over a month to prepare for it dumb ass. You think that may have something to do with it. How bout this Tech ran the same play on the nontackling mutts 35 times in the game. This year will be totally different except for the outcome.

LSU has been known for the DL under Saban and Miles. The DL stuff the holes allowing LB to make the tackles if they did not tackle themself. UGA’s battered DL was allowing GT’s OL to get downfield and make blocks. It was not planning LSU’s defense played better and was better built to win the game than UGA.

All of you fellow Dawg lovers out there who put much of the blame of UGA’s failure to win a SEC or BCS title since Van Gorder’s departure directly on Willie Martinez, take satisfaction that this will his last year as DC. We know numbers don’t lie and they show our defenses are getting worse and worse. Take heart though, because our AD was quoted after last season saying, “…all coaches are accountable, even assistant coaches.” I took that to mean that he will override Richt’s head-in-the-sand love for Willie, his former college roommate. The evidence is not only in the numbers, but in the lack of interest in Willie by any major football program, even his alma mater Miami in an offseason when just about every other UGA assistant received offers.

I actually went to the Tech/LSU game with a Tech buddy of mine. It was more of a perfect storm situation than anything else.

LSU executed at a high level.
Tech basically did not execute at all.

Throw in some absolutely horrible special teams plays by Tech, and equates to the 38-3 beat down every saw.

I say all of this to make that point that I don’t think LSU and the rest of the football world have the blueprint to defend the spread option, or whatever it is CPJ runs at Tech.

Regarding the original paragraph in the blog, I think we finish behind UF in the East as well, and see us losing to LSU and Okie St. We just have too much of a gauntlet this year, but I do anticipate the D and O-Line being much better.

Go Dawgs!

“schemes Georgia used against Tech, I’ve felt all along that the Jackets weren’t doing anything that playing smart assignment football and good tackling fundamentals couldn’t handle”

this bothers me because thats the whole point of techs offense, it exploits breakdowns in assignment football, it only takes one man to mess up, its like a deep pass on busted coverage or a linebacker making the wrong read on a guard on a counter play out of the I. Its not a gimmick offense, its a proven effective offense that when run correctly beats defenses. its football, kust like urban meyers spread or a shotgun passing based schem, when are people gonna relize this

What an ugly reminder looking at that Navy blog. We sure made Tech look better than they were. Talk about poor defensive schemes and sleep walking safties….. Probably the worst effort by the coaches and players in CMRs time at Georgia.

How will we fare in 2009? Very good, maybe great offensive line, very good, potentially great receivers but big question marks at QB and running back. Very good interior defensive line but no pass rush. Good but not great linbackers and questionable defensive backs. Lots of ifs; if Cox is pretty good and Caleb lives up to his potential and the defensive backs learn how to cover and tackle we could win 10. If not it could be a long year.

We need Kiante Tripp and Rod Battle to step up at defensive end and Justin Houston to help when he is out of the dog house. We need Joe Cox to be the next D.J. Shockley and Caleb King and Carlton Thomas to run wild. We need Braden Smith to run back punts for touchdowns and A.J. Green and Marlon Brown to be uncoverable. We need Owens and Weston to plug the middle and Jones to live up to the 5 star status he came here with. We need BoBo to be less predictible and put in plays we can execute and Willie needs to prove he belongs in the job he has and he’ll have a chance against OK State.

Bill King,
If injuries don’t become an issue, even you could run thru the holes the offensive line will provide. Cox will do great at passing (fewer interceptions than Stafford). The whole season is gonna end up depending on the defense. Again, if injuries don’t rape the team, UGA should be very good this year. Should be interesting.

With all the athletes absent for the Dawgs through-out the’09 season,it is a credit to our coaches that we won as many games as we did. All a coach can do is the best he can. Let’s see, Genius blogger figures out that the way to beat GT’s offense is to play better defense. Guess what? That’t the same way you beat ANY D1 offense.

UGA lost because Tech was better. You can study LSU tape until you are blue in the face, but GT was just BETTER than UGA so get over it mutts.

I suppose that Alabama’s first half against UGA gives everyone good game film on how to beat UGA?

It ain’t that simple folks. Football is move/counter move by the opposing coaches. GT may have lesser overall talent from top to bottom, but GT just has a better coach – period. UGA is loaded with talent and has been since 1980 and still doesn’t have a National Championship to show for it.

UGA has the potential to be a great team. Solid O-line and very strong up the middle on D. Look for UGA to be 10-2 or 11-1 for the year. I have said a number of times the real key for UGA is being prepared to play mentally for an entire season. The D is most worrisome as they seem to come out flat two or three games a year. This is why CMR will spend more time with the Defense this year to ensure they are prepared. CMR will also need to spend more time with the QB this year and making sure that they are coached up and ready to play. If UGA goes 11-1, it will be his best year coaching to date.

For the Ga. Tech loss: for the umpteenth time, UGA lost that game for 3 reasons
1.) They were totally deflated from the Florida loss and were essentially playing for nothing but a bowl bid, hence the lethargic play. Those guys on defense know how to tackle, they were just feeling sorry for themselves and didn’t care. They got lucky against Kentucky and Auburn and their luck ran out against Tech. The spead for that game was UGA -7.5, and I was like no way! I’ll put my money on Tech all day b/c UGA doesn’t give a damn about this game. And I won money that day even though my team lost. I might not be much of a fan for doing that, but if UGA is going to play half-ass and lose a game, then I’m not going to feel bad about making money off their sorry attitude.
2.) Turnovers: Two Tech scores came off of turnovers, a Stafford INT and a Richard Samuel fumble on the 20 yard line which led to a TD and gave Tech momentum. That’s 13 points! The Lesson: it’s not how many good plays you make but how many bad ones you make. Maybe one day UGA will learn this lesson.
3.) It was Tech’s time: Truth be told UGA got lucky against Tech in 2005 and 2006. Tech’s defense played good enough for them to win both of those year’s but the offense kept screwing it up for them. But this time, it was Tech’s offense that had their act together. Tech’s offense had a coming out party against Miami the week before and had the momentum. They were playing focused and inspired football and UGA wasn’t. Plain and simple.

As for the finishing second in the SEC East behind Florida, that’s not a bold prediction. The Dawgs can finish 9-3 or 8-4 and still be second in the East this year.

The Navy guy’s criticism was flawed because many teams will throw a lateral out of that set and have one on one blocking if you play just one CB on the two WRs. You don’t have to be eligible to catch a lateral.

The problem with UGA’s defense last year was injuries and lack of physicality. The two issues went hand and hand as the coaches could not practice physically with the amount of injuries they had.

UGA 2001: Is physicality a word? I don’t remember that one in any of my english classes. If it isn’t a word, we should make it one.

I do agree with you in principle that you need to practice the way you want to play and Richt even talked about changing practice as a result of injuries, however last year was a lack of effort on the defense. Way to many games with more than 30 points. Actually, UGAs defense needs to be measuring games in terms of games under 15 points. Time to get back to the Junkyard Dawgs!!!!

everyone seems to think the d cost us against gt, and yes it was awful. but lets not forget that horrible 3rd qtr that our O had. this goes straight to coaching, coming out flat and contempt. every single game we’ve played over the last 8 yrs when leading have all started the same way in the 2nd half. now simply put, i for one, can’t and won’t complain about the coaching as we have one of the best in the college(the record speaks for itself). i even understand the philosophy. come out in the third and wear them down with the run game when they’ve been sitting for 15 min. we just got too lack-a-dasical in the third. should’ve,would’ve, could’ve won that game 60-42. hope we learned a lesson, which i think we did.

oh yeah, we will be playing texas for the NC. at least my 5 grand i recently put on it in vegas hopes so!!!

I attended a lot of Georgia Southern games when Paul Johnson was the OC and HC. Not only is he innovative, he is also one of the best motivators in all of college football and his play selection is scary. That being said, on the right day a defense, if completely disciplined, can shut down the spread option.

Regardless of how the remainder of the season unfolds, the Tech game should be one to remember. By that time UGA should have all of the unknowns figured out on offense. The key to stopping the spread option, like any triple option offense, is stopping the fullback dive. UGA did a good job of that in the first half of the 2008 game, but poor tackling and missed assignments in the second half doomed of the effort.

The strength of the Georgia defense in 2009 will be at defensive tackle. If the starters stay healthy and understudies develop, that strength will force Tech to alter its game plan.

One thing I am concerned about is the bye Tech gets the week before the game. Georgia will have four games prior to the contest and Tech will be fresh. As we all know the grind of the 12-game season really wears on the players.

Let’s hope that CMR and WM review enough tapes of the Jackets during this summer and prior to the 2009 game to help shut down the spread option.

LSU had the right gameplan. Blow through the OL and only let Tech get ~400 yards of total offense. Also, complete fake kicks, recover onside kicks, recover fumbles, etc. Not assignment football or option stopping defense without having a completely kick-ass defense.

To actually reference a knowledgeable Navy blogger and take nothing more than “we need to play assignment football and make tackles” is laughable. I only hope the UGA coaches are so inept, but I’m sure they are not. The part about the UGA defender covering a Tech blocker, disguised as a receiver, all within the standard rules of football, tells me that PJ will come up with plenty of ways to confuse defenses, especially the dogs. Keep on trying to call it a high school offense or whatever you want, but you know deep down in places you don’t talk about you are at least worried you might not have an answer. And Bill, if you are going to quote other bloggers, at least try to come off as somewhat as knowledgeable about football as they are.

UGA won’t lose to Tennessee in 2009. Few teams will. Eric Berry will help them win at least 6 or 7 games, but they won’t win more than 7. New DC and OC. Also lost a lot of linemen. Their OL will not be as good, and their DL was horrible last year and will be this year. They won’t beat UGA, UF or Bama. UGA may lose three at most, LSU, Florida and one more. Then again, they may beat UF and lose a different game. I can easily see a 10-2 season with the resolve and overpowering talent. They WILL beat Tech in Atlanta.

Hey Chuck you do really want to compare Paul Johnson’s coaching record to Mark Richt’s?

Paul Johnson’s record is116-43 one of only 6 of the greatest college coaches in history to achieve that record. Paul “Bear” Bryant is in that club. Second Paul Johnson has two national championships in 1-AA, he was coach of the year last year national and ACC, along with 5 more coach of the year awards.

Mark Richt has none of those awards or recognitions. He is just known as a good christian coach who get’s his @$$ handed to him by Florida every year, and a coach who doesn’t have the stones to fire the very coach that is killing him.

If Mark Richt couldn’t win the NC last year with Stafford, Massaquoi, and Moreno then you can forget it.

……Oh wait I have to run, Paul Johnson is hyping up the GT team while Richt is giving his team another prayer meeting on the sideline…I don’t want to miss another inspirational prayer meeting.

BS Patrol, you need to patrol yourself. Tech is not a consensus pick to win the ACC; most of the preseason mags pick Virginia Tech. And Tech “would be the pick to win the SEC?” Over Florida? Put down the weed, moron. The Gators would beat the Jackets by 30.

Tech deserved to win last year’s game. They wanted it more, they executed, and Georgia’s defense played uninspired, arm-tackle football in the second half after they figured they had the game won. Two turnovers and that sort of sloppy, “let’s let Stafford and Knowshon handle it” attitude was all it took. That will NOT be the team’s attitude this season. Most Tech fans on here are giving last year’s win an undeserved amount of cosmic significance. It was, quite simply, a “W.” It did not represent some cataclysmic shift in the fabric of the universe. It did not add any points to CPJ’s IQ, nor did it subtract any points from CMR’s.

This is a different season. You Jacket fans might do well to temper your inane commentary somewhat before the Dawgs come to Atlanta this fall. Payback can be a beee-otch.

Bill is absolutely correct. Georgia’s safety play and tackling against GT were awful. Take a look at GT’s winning TD run– the safety just missed the runner. Picking Georgia high this year is problematic, but the Dawgs look like a top 10 or 15 team– even with the tough schedule.

Bill, you are correct that good assignment football and good tackling is all that is needed to stop Johnson’s offense. However, by saying that you ignore the fact that it is extremely difficult to simply “play assignment football and tackle well” for an entire 4 quarters. The problem is, if you miss one assignment or miss one tackle, they take it to the house. Point is that playing assignment football and tackling well are easier said than done over the course of a full 60 minutes.

You are UGA –a team that looks good on paper and in the pre-season polls, but you never live up to your billing. Your head coach is overhyped and in many big games has simply been outcoached. Your opponents hope you lock your DC in to a long-term contract. Your players run afoul with the law, bringing embarrasment to UGA graduates such as myself. You’re in-state rival that you claim superiority over has won the last national championship in this state –they have four to your two. We’ll see. I’m optimistic that last year was sour enough to motivate change and hard work. Martinez is on the hot seat and if the defense plays as poorly as last year I think Damon Evans may force a change. Having said that Georgia still has a lot of talent despite losing Moreno and Stafford. The offensive and defensive lines should be real good. Tech will be remedied by good tackling. Florida hinged on turnovers, missed field goals and a badly timed, failed onsides kick. 49-10 is obviously bad but if Georgia makes those mistakes against any good team the results would be pretty much the same.

A lot of what happened last year is fixable. I think CMR will get it done this year.

GA could be 6-6 and still beat Tech wouldnt it be nice if both teams were undefeated and had a show down in GA. I pull for Tech to beat the crap out of the ACC teams because the better they play the bigger the real game is at the end of the season. Go Dawgs, Go Jackets

Dorsey Hill

The failure of the defense against Tech was much more than execution. The scheme was inherently flawed. If Tech gets a QB that runs that offense well and we keep doing what we are doing, it will get ugly in a hurry. As we know we got hurt by the dive and the pitch. If the QB learns when to keep it, it will only get worse.

What we have to do is one of two things; either which will be effective. You either have to hit the QB while he is still in the tackle box and force either an early pitch or the dive or you have to string the pitch out and flood the flat with personnel so that the neither the keep nor the pitch look attractive. As it is our scheme made the QB’s reads very easy and we allowed the QB to be well outside the tackle box when he made the pitch. Further when the pitch was made there was a safety flying over the top and a corner at most in position to make any kind of a play. A good QB will fake the pitch, tuck it and be gone.

You have to either attack the QB within moments of the snap or you have to be patient and deprive the offense of its running lanes by stringing the plays out toward the sideline. In other words you either hit the QB in the mouth immediately or you force him out of bounds by giving him nowhere else to go.

So as you can see, 7-5 would be a GREAT season. A fumble here, an interception there, a missed tackle over yonder, and it could easily be 6-6 or 5-7. 7-5 does appear to be a very realistic prediction.

Tech outplayed and out hustled UGA period. Good on ‘em. ‘Bout time they won one. The old cliche “you win championships with defence” was the storyline for UGA in 2008. The defense was a no show. It remains to be seen what or who shows up for the Dawgs in this year’s defensive edition. The secondary last year was pitiful, just pitiful. If it does not improve drastically the Dawgs could lose 3 or 4 this year. It also looks like UGA could lack a consistent running back, too. Most of the much heralded high school running backs from Georgia fizzle. Too bad with the kind of O line that it is supposed to have.
