Caleb King ‘pushing himself’

The Red & Black’s Tyler Estep checks in with Richard Samuel on the off-season state of the Dogs’ tailbacks, where Caleb King is penciled in at No. 1 but didn’t finish up the spring with a very firm grip on the starting job. Samuel’s still awfully young but showed flashes of potential last season. Then there are Carlton Thomas, the surprise star of the spring, and Dontavius Jackson, also coming back from injury. And if he doesn’t get redshirted, true freshman Washaun Ealey is likely to get into the mix, too.

Samuel, who estimates he’s “not quite” 100 percent recovered from wrist surgery in January but expects to be fine when camp opens in August, says the tailbacks themselves aren’t really paying attention to the focus fans are putting on the competition at that position.

“We don’t even really talk about it,” he says. “We just go out there and all help each other out, and if we see a person messing up we’re going to try to help the other person. So we don’t really see it as competition. We know it’s a competition in the back of our heads, but we just do the best that we can every day.”

Samuel tells the R&B he’s seen that King is “pushing himself. He has that drive to be better. He’s working hard in that weight room, working hard in that film room. Just the drive and determination that he has is stronger.”

Mark Richt is already on record saying King has “become an outstanding pass protector” (contrary to last season) and understands Georgia’s system better now. If he’s found the drive and determination that seemed to be missing in the spring — the spark to bust a tackle or go for the extra yard — that can only be good news for the Dogs.

I worry about king’s toughness. He does not seem to ever make it past first contact. Pass blocking is nice and everything, but you still gotta tote the rock every now and then. Because of his high level recruiting status he will get a chance early on, but if he struggles he will find his way to the sideline yet again.

As far as CK:I think that he is on the verge of having a monster year. Last year was sort of like what Shockley went through his first 3 years behind Greene. I think Caleb was trying too hard to do something exciting to make a huge splash with limited snaps. Playing running back is closer to running a marathon than a 200m sprint. If your given enough carries those 3-5 yard carriers become 15-20 yard explosions in the 4th quarter. Also hopefully he won’t tap himself out in the redzone or be bizarely removed from the game by Coach BooBoo.

As a person that has known and coached Caleb since he was 6 years old you don’t have to question his toughest he is plenty tough enough. He is not a fullback he is in mold of a Barry sanders in the open field he going make the guy miss, but he will always stick it up the middle also run hard and bring the hammer will he needs to. If you Ga fans don’t want him as a Tech fan I would love to have him.

Actually coachdawg, we shared an ACC title in 1998, the year FSU won the National championship. Also, I know I’m a Georgia Tech fan, but y’all are right, no one blogs on Georgia Tech, so I need to find a place to say what needs to be said. Washaun Ealy will be really good, but I think he’s too small right now to endure an SEC season. And if you want full production from him, have him be an integral part for 4 years, not be just thrown in there in inopportune this season, not giving him a real chance to succeed.

And I apologize for Ramblin Rick and Saint Simons. They suck, and are annoying. Not all Tech fans are like that. But Caleb King won’t win the Heisman, and doesn’t hold a candle to that old Dwyer boy down in Atlanta.

Will this interfere with the 2009 football season?

Coach D

June 25th, 2009
11:49 am

I was a little dissapointed by Caleb’s performance in the spring game, particularly with him dropping balls. I feel that the offense can be very successful if they let Joe Cox run a no-huddle offense but for that to happen someone besides AJ Green will need to step up and catch some passes, and that includes the running backs King and Chapas( who is an underrated receiver at FB like Southerland before him).Caleb is not going to be an every down/pound it up the middle running back, so if that is what he expects then he’s just going to have to get that out of his head.

But he can be a Ricky Watter’s type, where Bobo can utilize his speed on toss sweep’s and in the passing game. Improving his receiving skills will make Caleb a more valuable player to the team, because he has the speed to make people miss in the open field. And it will get him more playing time. The question is: does he have the drive to make himself a more complete player? Or will he pout if he’s not getting 20-30 carries a game?

Take Ronnie Brown for example. He got less carries at RB than Cadillac Williams did in 2004, but he was used quite a bit in Auburn’s passing game. And because he wasn’t one dimensional, he went in the first round of the draft. It’s something for Caleb to consider.

Okay class, you cannot get off topic. The topic is Caleb King. No, you can’t worry about what the special education kids in the other room are doing. They realize that they cannot be in the regular room so they they to get you to notice them. You must ignore the poor souls. For the ones that actually attended college, you realize that we all had to make adjustments as we matured as students. I really believe Caleb is going to be an excellent running back. He is a great kid that is overlooked because he is a reserved kid. As young adults, we all made mistakes. I am a little unsettled by RB by commitee approach because in my time as student 95-2000 and the last 8 years I have seen some excellent runners come through and without exception when our offense was at its best we had a “featured back” . Sure Torin Kirtsey spelled Edwards occasionally but Robert Edwards was the man, and when we gave Musa the ball enough he was the man, and so on. I think we need to find a guy to carry the bulk and everybody else just needs to fill a role. I think it should be Caleb because (other than perhaps Ealey) none of the others combine size and speed. Just my humble opinion.

King has been here the longest and should have been a clear #1 by this point but is not. Samuel is similar to Danny Ware. A bigger back but had a few fumbles last year. Other than the G-day game, none of the others have seen the field.

If UGA is ever able to get to the top of the mountian- the whole team needs to take a look at some of the other teams and see the drive and determination. That’s what UGA has been sorly missing over the last few years. This team needs to “man up” and take care of business instead of being ready with a stedy line of excuses each week like their former QB did so well. You have to want to win not just stand around and wait for it to happen

“My nephew played defense for Savannah Christian last year and he is SHOCKED that Ealey is going to UGA at all, much less highly rated. We held him in Check and we are very average.”

Let’s see…against Savannah Christian last year Ealey rushed 18 times for 143 yards and 3 touchdowns. Your nephew must have been thinking about someone else because to me that’s a pretty good game for a running back.

Hopefully Caleb will develope some desire and decide to run hard and mean beginning this year. That has been the problem with Caleb so far.

Wow…you guys are hard on this kid…pause for a minute…EVERYBODY seems to remember how Moreno just broke out in 07…I mean people were talking Hershel comparisons and all that.but what a lot of you forget is that he went thru spring and fall practice and was still 3rd on the depth chart behind Lumpkin and Brown.Once he was all we had left and was able to get the rock 20 plus times he blew up…don’t forget T.Brown STILL rushed for 900 plus yards that year and he missed 2-3 games!!My point is Caleb has not had the opportunities to tote the rock like those kids.He DID rush for over 100 yards in 1 game last year.He looked pretty good to me when he got more than 3 or 4 carries. He had to have the least amount of attempts as the backup as any player since that guy who backed up Hershel(anybody remember who that was?)so I say let’s slow down on the “bust” chatter.Along the same vein you really want to know why Knowshon was taking himself out a lot down the stretch?Because they ran him to death!!He took the bulk of the carries and in passing downs he was Stafford’s security blanket…Knowshon took on a hell of lot of blitzing LB’s last year.He kind of wore down over the stretch…that’s understandable to me..he’s not built for 30 carries a game over a season…he was at his best sharing the ball because it kept him fresh. In the pro’s Moreno will be more of a Westbrook than an Emmit Smith…that’s not a knock on him,he is a great player but I don’t think he is a 25 carry a game pro back.Back to this bunch..King looks the best to me..Richard…CMR promised him he would get a strong look at RB and he is a man of his word but…. OMG can u picture that kid at LB?He could be a “superstar” I’m talking high 1st rd pick..he has all the tools, even in his HS film he looked to be a much better LB than tailback.I think the key to the RB situation will be how good does D.Jackson and Ealey look coming out of camp.two 210-215 lb bruisers who look like natural running backs on film.If one or definitely if both impress heading into the opener I think Samuel is headed to the other side of the ball.C.Thomas will probably get some kind of package put in for him but I don’t see him being a real threat to be the no 1 guy.

southgadawg88, I agree with some of what you say. The RB by committee has worked well at times and mediocre at others. I would like to see 2 RBs step up with one taking 70% of the load and another taking 20% as a change of pace. RB are more likely to get on a roll if they start getting more carries same as a QB getting more snaps.

As for Moreno coming out I don’t remember Herschel, Hearst, or Hampton coming out and they carried the rock most of the game and blocked as well. Herschel rarely gets credit he deserves for catching the ball. Moreno was Mr Energy bouncing up in ‘07 but in ‘08 he looked to be wanting to come out at times.

I’ve seen you make some pretty intelligent comments on this blog about your football team on this blog, so I know you’re not stupid. But honestly, we beat y’all last year, so by the transitive property, that means we’re at least as good as y’all, and last year, we were better. We didn’t lose a whole lot, so I’d even venture so far as we might even be better than y’all this year. We’re at least 2nd. Give us that, minimum.

southgadawg88 has a good memory, Richt did tell Samuel he would get a good look @ T-back. Samuel likes linebacker better, said he likes to hit people. Bruff, If Thomas has the hands I like the idea of him being on the field at the same time as whichever one of the bigger backs steps up. Speaking of multiple RB Borges did a great job of putting 2 good powerful backs on the field at the same time. If Moreno and Browm are both in the backfield who do you key on? Both can block and both can move the ball. Bobo is a loyal UGA alum but has not proven capable of using either strategy.

Bruff again we’re thinking alike. IMO Samuel will never make it as a NFL RB but he may as a LB. If UGA can develop a couple of the other RBs I’d like to see him at LB. He’d also make a good combo punch in the Borges/Auburn situation of 2 strong RBs switching it up like Cadillac and Irons. His running style leaves him prone to fumbles and below the knee arm tackles(swipe at his foot, you’ll probably get em) He’s a beast to disrupt straight up physically, but dont know if he has the lateral quicks to maximize that(although his speed and power are awesome…which is antohter reason i’d like to see him at LB)

King, Thomas, and Ealy should be the rotation. King will be quite alright. Alot of people complained about the spring game, but do they realize that those are plays they probably run with C-Thomas and C-Thomas got alot of up the gut counter runs….which King will get…its called sandbagging and it goes on every spring game on every Div. 1 campus)

You don’t have to be a great running back to be successful if you have a good line, see Emmitt Smith. A bad line can make even the greatest running back’s numbers just OK, see Barry Sanders. I think our combination is more on the Emmitt side of the spectrum this year and we were on the Barry side last year. Best case scenario is dead center.

It is a team game and comparing RB’s with different OL’s is comparing apples to oranges. Comparing RB from different era’s and different OL’s is comparing apples to cows.

My, My what a messy blog today. The nectur lickers are out in full force trying to find someone to talk to, someone who care about Georgia Tech football and they have to come to a Georgia blog to talk smack over 1 win in ths last 8 years and a major beatdown by LSU. Except for a handful of nerds (most of whom didn’t even go to Tech) no one care about Tech football. If they reduced the stadium to 35,000 seats they may be able to fill it. They are all shoot’in us a red eye cause they got 7 years of loser to shake off.
Now to the topic at hand. Caleb might be the starter in game 1 but Carlton Thomas was much more impressive in the spring game. Richard Samuel is still in my Dawg house for fumbling the kickoff against the bees. I say Carlton will be the star next year.

you yechies need to worry about cleaning up that ghetto neighborhood you live in, no one wants to deaL W/that crap if they come to a yech game, stinger, the dawgs would win the conference every freaking year if we were in the acc, the defense probably would have half dozen shutouts

coachdawg 2000, I think GT shared title with UW.. Washington not Colorado.

Washaun Ealey too small? Well, we have a little quick back named Carlton Thomas, 5′7, 175-lbs. He plays physical for his size. He’s a good change of pace back. He’ll be fun to watch.

I think eventually, Richard Samuel and Carlton Thomas will be the 1 two punch combo. Caleb King will be a roll guy. Don’t get me wrong, I hope he does prove me wrong. I guess the the bottom line is, I hope one will emerged from the pack and be THE GO to guy, like Moreno.

If Caleb is going to have a breakout year, it would seem that this is the year to do it. We should have a very strong O-line, with plenty of depth, barring injuries. Those who question Washaun Ealey must have forgotten that as a junior, he was the all-classification player of the year in the state of Georgia. He was injured much of 2008, and he showed in the Dome game that he was but a shadow of himself. I am looking forward to him being in the mix at tailback.

i decided that im going to post the score of the Tech/Georgia game on each and every tech blog next season. I guarantee the margin of victory for the dogs is more than 3…anyone want to reflect on 2002? 51-7! 51-7! 51-7!

Caleb needs to have a tougher mind set! He needs to run and deliver some punishment. He seems soft and timid when he runs. He is first string right now, but as soon as he starts missing blocks, Samuel will be right there to take his job and he will never again get a chance. He has one more chance because there are so many backs in the stable looking to get a chance. Get tough Caleb!

1. How many of you “experts” have actually been in the weightroom or on the field with CK? Until you start getting your info from somewhere other than a blog, you’re clueless (as am I on this one)…

2. Johnson’s offense is fine. Personally, I enjoy watching a good running attack and killer defense.

3. I have to admit, I haven’t seen much of Dwyer. I’ll try to give him a look this season. From his stats last year, and what I’ve heard (not on here) he sounds like a nice back.

4. Not really sure, but is it possible that there might be MORE than 1 good college running back out there? Some of you sound like you should be on “Our Gang” — “My Dad can beat up your Dad” or “My Dad makes more money than your Dad”……..lol

i am glad to hear that Caleb is pushing himself and wants the job. Maybe that is true, it can only be good news.

I had the privilege of talking with Jeff Owens today and recording an interview that can be heard on my show tomorrow at 4:30pm. We talked about the upcoming season and his insight as to how the summer is unfolding.

Here’s the link to listen to the show FRIDAY at 4:30pm EST

techies 7 and one, i remember nothing about the wins, but i do know the dawgs didn’t get rings. Why because its like going to BK and getting a hb, nothing to get excited about, eat it and forget about cause it means nothing. Thats right bugs you mean nothing, you’re just a bore. 7 and 1 is not a good indication of future success. I think you will find that out. Go away you are less exciting than watching old hee haw reruns

Gojackets5 all we hear is about how great the O is, what about the D? Looks like this year GT will have to rack up 400 on the ground to win any of it’s ball games based on what you are saying. UGA 488 total yards and GT 428. So you guys out rushed UGA, but did not out pass, GT stuck with what was working (rushing yards 409) and UGA as well (passing yards 407). You won the game by three points and have bragging rights, but gave up more yards than UGA did so what does that say about your D?

FLDAWG:

All UGA/Stafford pass stats showed was that GT was, in fact, playing with an almost Feshmen LB & CB/SS line-up. GT rush D held KM to 94, and that included his 32 yard TD. So, GT rush D was solid, GT pass D was very “rookie.” GT wont have that problem in 09.

Keep drinking the koolaid Caleb. And if you keep blowing your blocking assignments you will end your college career at Georgia State and your pro career in Orlando on Quincy’s arena team.
