Caleb King ‘pushing himself’

The Red & Black’s Tyler Estep checks in with Richard Samuel on the off-season state of the Dogs’ tailbacks, where Caleb King is penciled in at No. 1 but didn’t finish up the spring with a very firm grip on the starting job. Samuel’s still awfully young but showed flashes of potential last season. Then there are Carlton Thomas, the surprise star of the spring, and Dontavius Jackson, also coming back from injury. And if he doesn’t get redshirted, true freshman Washaun Ealey is likely to get into the mix, too.

Samuel, who estimates he’s “not quite” 100 percent recovered from wrist surgery in January but expects to be fine when camp opens in August, says the tailbacks themselves aren’t really paying attention to the focus fans are putting on the competition at that position.

“We don’t even really talk about it,” he says. “We just go out there and all help each other out, and if we see a person messing up we’re going to try to help the other person. So we don’t really see it as competition. We know it’s a competition in the back of our heads, but we just do the best that we can every day.”

Samuel tells the R&B he’s seen that King is “pushing himself. He has that drive to be better. He’s working hard in that weight room, working hard in that film room. Just the drive and determination that he has is stronger.”

Mark Richt is already on record saying King has “become an outstanding pass protector” (contrary to last season) and understands Georgia’s system better now. If he’s found the drive and determination that seemed to be missing in the spring — the spark to bust a tackle or go for the extra yard — that can only be good news for the Dogs.

You don’t have to be a great running back to be successful if you have a good line, see Emmitt Smith. A bad line can make even the greatest running back’s numbers just OK, see Barry Sanders. I think our combination is more on the Emmitt side of the spectrum this year and we were on the Barry side last year. Best case scenario is dead center.

It is a team game and comparing RB’s with different OL’s is comparing apples to oranges. Comparing RB from different era’s and different OL’s is comparing apples to cows.

Good idea guys.

The cream will rise to the top. No one really know who will be the starting tailback until real bullets begin to fly. Caleb King is anointed, but has not really shown the “IT” factor that most UGA tailbacks have shown traditionally. I am a Univ of Miami fan, but also a fan of the talent and good football players and both have been in abundance at UGA. I would not panic if I were a UGA fan, the cream will rise to the top and you all have plenty of talent at that position.

I think Bobo has improved some as a play caller…he still falls in love with a couple of plays at some odd times. The potential is there for us to have a more physical Offense though…I like the size we have this year at WR and if these kids can be committed to blocking and I mean hitting somebody..it could lead to some big plays downfield.I don’t know what you guys think but I’m looking forward to see what he does with Gray as a pass/run threat.IMO the Ward/Shockely type of QB which Logan is…has proven to be just as effective in the scheme as the Weinke/Stafford version.I know Cox is the starter and he’s not a runner but I think the No 2 guy will get a ton of snaps this fall.

For all the UF fans on here who did not become fans until around 1996 let’s take a look at the history books. All time series in football UGA 46 UF 38 and 2 ties. Congrats on your recent success. For all the delusional Tech fans on UGA blogs day in and day out the all time series in football is UGA 59 TECH 39 and 5 ties. Congrats on your win last year. Yes UF has had a lot of recent success and Tech looks like a force for years to come, but collage football is about tradition and history and from the looks of the history between these two and UGA you guys still have some catching up to do.

Since UGA finshed 9-3 after getting drilled by Bama, Fl, and Tech, either UGA was WAAAAAAAAAAAY over-rated last year, or the SEC, in reality, really sucked.

“…flashes of potential”. I would hope he would flash more than potential as he showed up on campus with potential. Let’s put a little more thought into this Mr. King. All UGA football players have potential and they show it by their presence.

Potential per Merriam Webster
1: existing in possibility : capable of development into actuality
2: expressing possibility ; specifically : of, relating to, or constituting a verb phrase expressing possibility, liberty, or power by the use of an auxiliary with the infinitive of the verb (as in “it may rain”)

Pac 10…USC would have been the 3rd or 4th best team in the SEC last year. USC has the easiest route to the NC every single year. The fact that they haven’t played for all the marbles might mean that they are WAAAAAAAAAAAAY over rated. There is really no way to overstate how bad the PAC 10 is compared to the SEC.

Stafford has a chance but the rest are clipboard carriers or talking heads. TECH isn’t Tailback U or NFL QB stepping stone, but UGA thinks they are. Is UGA going to print the old USC bumper sticker “You can’t Lick Our COX”? No because Joe will be sitting by the 3rd game of the year. Joe COX welcome to being BOBO and RICHT.

How would you like to see 53 to 3 this year in Atlanta? We will definatley hang a half dollar on you. You idiots that think LSU showed you how to stop us, why don’t you try to do it?

Herschel Walker had already signed with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL for the unheard of at the time price of $2 million. Otherwise, if he had stayed at UGA his Senior season, there is no doubt in my mind he would have been the NFL’s number one pick. If you can give me a good reason why someone other than Herschel would have been the number one pick in the 1984 NFL draft, I am ready to read it.

My, My what a messy blog today. The nectur lickers are out in full force trying to find someone to talk to, someone who care about Georgia Tech football and they have to come to a Georgia blog to talk smack over 1 win in ths last 8 years and a major beatdown by LSU. Except for a handful of nerds (most of whom didn’t even go to Tech) no one care about Tech football. If they reduced the stadium to 35,000 seats they may be able to fill it. They are all shoot’in us a red eye cause they got 7 years of loser to shake off.
Now to the topic at hand. Caleb might be the starter in game 1 but Carlton Thomas was much more impressive in the spring game. Richard Samuel is still in my Dawg house for fumbling the kickoff against the bees. I say Carlton will be the star next year.

coachdawg 2000, I think GT shared title with UW.. Washington not Colorado.

Washaun Ealey too small? Well, we have a little quick back named Carlton Thomas, 5′7, 175-lbs. He plays physical for his size. He’s a good change of pace back. He’ll be fun to watch.

I think eventually, Richard Samuel and Carlton Thomas will be the 1 two punch combo. Caleb King will be a roll guy. Don’t get me wrong, I hope he does prove me wrong. I guess the the bottom line is, I hope one will emerged from the pack and be THE GO to guy, like Moreno.

If Caleb is going to have a breakout year, it would seem that this is the year to do it. We should have a very strong O-line, with plenty of depth, barring injuries. Those who question Washaun Ealey must have forgotten that as a junior, he was the all-classification player of the year in the state of Georgia. He was injured much of 2008, and he showed in the Dome game that he was but a shadow of himself. I am looking forward to him being in the mix at tailback.

Caleb needs to have a tougher mind set! He needs to run and deliver some punishment. He seems soft and timid when he runs. He is first string right now, but as soon as he starts missing blocks, Samuel will be right there to take his job and he will never again get a chance. He has one more chance because there are so many backs in the stable looking to get a chance. Get tough Caleb!

1. How many of you “experts” have actually been in the weightroom or on the field with CK? Until you start getting your info from somewhere other than a blog, you’re clueless (as am I on this one)…

2. Johnson’s offense is fine. Personally, I enjoy watching a good running attack and killer defense.

3. I have to admit, I haven’t seen much of Dwyer. I’ll try to give him a look this season. From his stats last year, and what I’ve heard (not on here) he sounds like a nice back.

4. Not really sure, but is it possible that there might be MORE than 1 good college running back out there? Some of you sound like you should be on “Our Gang” — “My Dad can beat up your Dad” or “My Dad makes more money than your Dad”……..lol

Gojackets5 all we hear is about how great the O is, what about the D? Looks like this year GT will have to rack up 400 on the ground to win any of it’s ball games based on what you are saying. UGA 488 total yards and GT 428. So you guys out rushed UGA, but did not out pass, GT stuck with what was working (rushing yards 409) and UGA as well (passing yards 407). You won the game by three points and have bragging rights, but gave up more yards than UGA did so what does that say about your D?

FLDAWG:

All UGA/Stafford pass stats showed was that GT was, in fact, playing with an almost Feshmen LB & CB/SS line-up. GT rush D held KM to 94, and that included his 32 yard TD. So, GT rush D was solid, GT pass D was very “rookie.” GT wont have that problem in 09.
