Caleb King ‘pushing himself’

The Red & Black’s Tyler Estep checks in with Richard Samuel on the off-season state of the Dogs’ tailbacks, where Caleb King is penciled in at No. 1 but didn’t finish up the spring with a very firm grip on the starting job. Samuel’s still awfully young but showed flashes of potential last season. Then there are Carlton Thomas, the surprise star of the spring, and Dontavius Jackson, also coming back from injury. And if he doesn’t get redshirted, true freshman Washaun Ealey is likely to get into the mix, too.

Samuel, who estimates he’s “not quite” 100 percent recovered from wrist surgery in January but expects to be fine when camp opens in August, says the tailbacks themselves aren’t really paying attention to the focus fans are putting on the competition at that position.

“We don’t even really talk about it,” he says. “We just go out there and all help each other out, and if we see a person messing up we’re going to try to help the other person. So we don’t really see it as competition. We know it’s a competition in the back of our heads, but we just do the best that we can every day.”

Samuel tells the R&B he’s seen that King is “pushing himself. He has that drive to be better. He’s working hard in that weight room, working hard in that film room. Just the drive and determination that he has is stronger.”

Mark Richt is already on record saying King has “become an outstanding pass protector” (contrary to last season) and understands Georgia’s system better now. If he’s found the drive and determination that seemed to be missing in the spring — the spark to bust a tackle or go for the extra yard — that can only be good news for the Dogs.

LSU did not hide from Superdork PJ, did they?

What was that score again from that awesome option?
How many times did Dwyer and Co get into the endzone?
Since we keep talking about GT on a GA blog, I figured I’d make sure this was all cleared up.

I agree otto. Moreno had alot more energy in 07 for whatever reason. What type of running back takes himself out in the redzone? We wonder why we struggled there, everybody knew we were gonna pass!!!

coachdawg, you can’t seriously believe that georgia tech is the third best team in the state, behind y’all and Southern. I’ve seen you make some pretty intelligent comments on this blog about your football team on this blog, so I know you’re not stupid. But honestly, we beat y’all last year, so by the transitive property, that means we’re at least as good as y’all, and last year, we were better. We didn’t lose a whole lot, so I’d even venture so far as we might even be better than y’all this year. We’re at least 2nd. Give us that, minimum.

Richt has had a good run in the state thanks to Chan Gailey. But that’s over.

southgadawg88 has a good memory, Richt did tell Samuel he would get a good look @ T-back. Samuel likes linebacker better, said he likes to hit people. But my take is he’s going to prove too good at running back to make the move to LB. With him pushing 230lbs running a 4.47 40 yd dash, he’s going to put a hurt on some folks this fall.

Bruff IMO the play calling was predictable first it was Sutherland then a few passing route. Mullens would use Thomas as a Percy Harvin type back. He can run as a RB or shift him around out of the slot.

Hah! You have to ask for it. That’s why we will always be #1 in this state. P.S. Beating someone does not make you as good or better than them. It only means you beat them. Is app state better than Michigan? By your transitive property that would make app state better than florida? And Gt better than LSU, which we all know is not true.

The rain and wet condition certainly played in Tech’s favor last year, considering their run offense. That being said, we were beat fair and square. However, you see what happens when a superior SEC team plays against Tech in normal weather conditions (GA Dome). Essentially, Tech should hope it rains every year to have a shot…

boys samuel will take over about mid season, he is the fastest, biggest and strongest of our backs, i dont know how fast this washuan ealy guys is, samuel cant do power cleans yet but will soon, and there is no one on techs roster that can make the dawgs lineup, that johnson kid last year maybe but he is gone to nfl, i dont know about being on techs campus this year and i have a permit to carry, too much crime with every day muggings, robberys

Ramblinwreck1378 I know thats 90. UGA has 2 other RBs that can split the remain 10% not to mention short yardage for the FBs.

RB1+RB2+X=100% I did get a solid B (just missed getting an A on the final) in Calc 2 at your beloved GT under Prof. Bandy before wising up and transferring out.

“I believe that GT opponents will be much better prepared for their offense this year. Everyone will look at the LSU game and see that staying in position works agains an option offense. LSU just plain killed the Yellow Bees.”

Yeah, Lost Dawg(fitting name), I’m sure Georgia didn’t preach “staying in position” last year before playing Tech’s triple option. I’m sure your coaches never uttered the words “stay at home” in the weeks leading up to the Tech game. If you you’ve never strapped on a helment, you are better served just shutting your trap. That might be the most pathetic comment yet on this blog.

Honest is right. King needs to hit the hole at full speed then look for a lane. Samuel does that very well. I kinda think lb for him though. He would be unstoppable as a biltzing lb. Kid loves contact.

Bruff, If Thomas has the hands I like the idea of him being on the field at the same time as whichever one of the bigger backs steps up. Speaking of multiple RB Borges did a great job of putting 2 good powerful backs on the field at the same time. If Moreno and Browm are both in the backfield who do you key on? Both can block and both can move the ball. Bobo is a loyal UGA alum but has not proven capable of using either strategy.

Wow, I can’t wait to see how Georgia’ defense plays against the Triple Option this year after LSU taught them to “stay in position.” That is brilliant stuff. It will be more like assuming the position when we run wild on you again.

Bruff again we’re thinking alike. IMO Samuel will never make it as a NFL RB but he may as a LB. If UGA can develop a couple of the other RBs I’d like to see him at LB. He’d also make a good combo punch in the Borges/Auburn situation of 2 strong RBs switching it up like Cadillac and Irons. Who does the def think is staying to block while the other gets the carry or slips out to catch the ball?

I can’t argue with that- I am still mad that my team got destroyed in Atlanta to end the season. But I also believe that game will help us in preparing for next year. I think the only thing LSU proved was that GT was drinking their own kool-aid going into that game after the big win in Athens. And I’d take our current roster and coaches over UGA’s any day of the week.

Why does Bill even post a topic anymore? No matter what he writes about it devolves into 45-42 hahahah and Coach Pajamas runs a peewee offense. What a waste of time. Tech idiots…go to your blog and argue over whether or not you are going to run right more or run left more. UGA idiots…stop feeding into the tech idiots! They are just trying to engage you in an argument. I have been caught up in it myself a few times…but everyday? It really grows tiresome.

As for Caleb, I think he’ll do just fine. He is not the same type of runner KM was and our experienced line suits his style of running. Knowshon would make a 4 yard gain by dodging 3 people in the backfield. Hopefully our line will have Caleb dodging the first defender after gaining 4 yards!

Ditto Otto……Samuel should be a LB and I’d be surprised if he doesnt get moved over there. His running style leaves him prone to fumbles and below the knee arm tackles(swipe at his foot, you’ll probably get em) He’s a beast to disrupt straight up physically, but dont know if he has the lateral quicks to maximize that(although his speed and power are awesome…which is antohter reason i’d like to see him at LB)

King, Thomas, and Ealy should be the rotation. King will be quite alright. Alot of people complained about the spring game, but do they realize that those are plays they probably run with C-Thomas and C-Thomas got alot of up the gut counter runs….which King will get…its called sandbagging and it goes on every spring game on every Div. 1 campus)
