What’s the verdict on Stafford?

David Hale of the Bulldogs Blog makes a good point about the way UGA fans feel about departed QB Matthew Stafford: “I’d be willing to wager there isn’t a player in recent history Georgia fans are more split on than Stafford … People either love him or hate him.”

Hale thinks that comes from Stafford’s inconsistency throughout much of his career. That’s certainly a factor,  but I believe the level of hype that accompanied Stafford’s arrival in Athens guaranteed that anything less than an SEC and even national championship during his time behind center would be viewed as disappointing.

As I’ve said here before, Stafford and Knowshon Moreno might have been the most talented quarterback-tailback tandem UGA has ever had, but they’ll probably never enter the pantheon of Bulldog immortals because they left school early without achieving what the Bulldog Nation expected of them.

What’s your take on Stafford? The most talented Georgia QB ever? An overrated player with a cannon for an arm but not much else? A potentially great quarterback who never quite fulfilled his promise before heading off to a lucrative pro career?

I wonder if those who dismiss Stafford’s UGA career now will feel differently about him if he wins a Super Bowl down the road.

People have been getting mugged at Tech for years and years, its part of the tradition. I love how this is a breaking news flash.

I, for one, won’t miss seeing Stafford throw the ball 80 yards down the field and ten yards over the receivers head. I also won’t miss seeing him drill a receiver with an uncatchable bullet from five yards away. Or how about throwing a pick six from his own endzone? Hopefully, this year Bobo will focus on moving the chains instead of the low percentage quick strike. I think of Joe Cox as David Greene with more intensity. IMO Greene set the standard.

STAFFORD = RYAN LEAF…Just another stong arm, over-hyped, bad decision making punk who will not amount to anything in the pros, just like he FAILED in college. STAFFORD = FAIL, LIONS = FAIL, SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD COMBO

Big Dawg, there actually was an off campus mugging by a player years ago, but it was the O-line. There are always some bad apples everywhere.. its nice to know that UGA runs such a clean, classy, Christian program where no athletes get involved in criminal activities. Uh huh. Right.

Stafford certainly wasn’t the greatest at Georgia…but he wasn’t the Jeff George a lot of you clowns make him out to be either. Bill shouldn’t invite the harsh statements by posting this crap either. It is hard enough to have a positive, constructive discussion on these blogs because of all of the tech idiots…but to invite ire from our own folks is just wrong.

Great talent, certainly, but a winner? Not quite. He had too many misses within the 20-yard line. Great quarterbacks consistently show leadership, through good times and bad.

With the Detroit Lions we are to expect a world championship?
He will probably spend the rest of his career on his back.
He could fill up the stats, just couldn’t win any championships.
I still think he was a great kid and I am glad to see him get paid.

Stafford is a very talented QB, but I can’t really recall him winning many big games (07 Alabama in OT comes to mind). His best game statistically was against Tech last year but that will be forgotten. That being said, he definitely made the right choice by leaving early and getting his huge contract. Maybe Detroit will win some games this year but I don’t think he is the second coming of Matt Ryan.

Tech outsourced the program because they can’t give away tickets. Can’t fill the stadium except when they play Georgia. GT lives for one game each year- Georgia. Your entire programs view of itself is based on the Georgia Game. That’s toobad because we own you. Always have and always will.

I’ll shake some nectur off my little dog for you bee boy. Georgia ownes Tech. You’ll win one or two occassionally which keeps it interesting but in the long haul we own you. What is so pitiful is that your program has no meaning without the Georgia rivalry.
