What’s the verdict on Stafford?

David Hale of the Bulldogs Blog makes a good point about the way UGA fans feel about departed QB Matthew Stafford: “I’d be willing to wager there isn’t a player in recent history Georgia fans are more split on than Stafford … People either love him or hate him.”

Hale thinks that comes from Stafford’s inconsistency throughout much of his career. That’s certainly a factor,  but I believe the level of hype that accompanied Stafford’s arrival in Athens guaranteed that anything less than an SEC and even national championship during his time behind center would be viewed as disappointing.

As I’ve said here before, Stafford and Knowshon Moreno might have been the most talented quarterback-tailback tandem UGA has ever had, but they’ll probably never enter the pantheon of Bulldog immortals because they left school early without achieving what the Bulldog Nation expected of them.

What’s your take on Stafford? The most talented Georgia QB ever? An overrated player with a cannon for an arm but not much else? A potentially great quarterback who never quite fulfilled his promise before heading off to a lucrative pro career?

I wonder if those who dismiss Stafford’s UGA career now will feel differently about him if he wins a Super Bowl down the road.

How could any UGA fan hate him? The guy went out every game and played his best. He never played behind a good OL, but he still made plays. Love him or hate him????? You love him if he is playing for your team and hate him if he is on the other side line.

Seems like there are more Techies here lately. They must be spending more time inside since it’s dangerous to be outside around that campus!

I agree Broad Street Al. I was an all day sucker that day, you live and learn. I have Pollack, Shock and Green and didn’t have to pay $$ for theirs and they will be remembered a helluva lot longer than Staff or Moreno, which I wouldn’t pay 50 cent for Moreno, he should be honored any UGA fan would want it.lol

I do agree with Huh? this time. What happened is done. I wish him the best in the NFL and if I were in his shoes I’d go to the NFL as well. I would not risk a career ending injury or your stock falling in the draft with that much money on the table even as a lifetime UGA fan.

Stafford will do great in the NFL. He is a hardworker with plenty of talent. It is hard to say if Stafford would have been better than Greene had he stayed longer, but I would put Greene as #1 of all time for UGA..

This is the last time I will post about this topic.

Stafford never made me feel as if he was the leader. Great individual talent, but not great for the team. I was ok with him leaving or staying. If he stayed, he would have gotten better, but in my opinion we will be fine without him.

Knowshown I could not have asked for more. Always played with passion. A little bit of a showboat but not really taunting the defender. He did disappear from time to time, but with the risk of playing RB, I understand him leaving.

With Stafford going #1 he made the right decision as well.

Asher Allen not so much. He NEEDED another year.

A comparison of Stafford leaving UGA to Tebow staying at UF is misleading. Given what the overwhelming majority of NFL teams still want in a QB, Stafford leaving UGA early was not unexpected. Tebow, for all his prolific hybrid skills, is not a “conventional offense” QB; there’s a reason his coach was doing more conventional under-center, drop-back play scheming this past spring and more is planned for the coming season for the Gators. (Yes, some of it is for beneft of Tebow’s presumed successor; however, it’s no secret that it’s being done now, in part, also to showcase Tebow as having potential as an NFL QB.)

I feel losing Knowshon will hurt more than losing Stafford. Early on I wasn’t that impressed with Matt. Myself and my family believed Joe Cox was the better of the two Matt’s first year. Sure Matt had that cannon of an arm, but what good will that do if you overthrow the receiver by 20 yards. Stafford did show improvement each year though. From a developement standpoint he should’ve stayed for his senior year. I can understand why he left early though and don’t blame him. He definately got the larger payday with his choice. Knowshon on the other hand…I don’t get it.

Matthew Stafford was a great Georgia QB who did alot for the Georgia program. He should not be thought of less just because he opted for the NFL a year before graduation. I believe that some of the Georgia fan base, and some of the media reporters are wrong in trying to blame Matthew for the Dawgs 10-3 season. It was a very good season, certainly not what we had hoped for, but there were alot of factors, primarily the injuries. So let’s get off this blame game, appreciate both Matthew and Knowshon for the great athletes and Bulldogs they are and were, and move on to another wonderful year with the Dawgs!

YOU KNOW that I KNOW that you WISH your program was a fraction as good as UGA. And no, Stafford was not the greatest. Very talented with a very very good arm. CMR vs GT… 7-1. Enough said. Geek!!

Arian Foster was a projected first rounder last year. He stays another year and goes undrafted this year. If Moreno has one injury he could pass up millions of dollars. Sadly I have to agree with his decision to leave early.

I think Stafford and Moreno showed they weren’t playing for the “G” on their helmet. They were thinking about themselves. Loyalty flew out the window. They had one of the best offensive lines in the coutnry coming back. The $$ would’ve been there after next year. I just think its sad. And don’t say “that’s not fair to say about them, you’re not in their shoes”. Bottom line they showed us what’s more important to them. I say we stop talking about them and move on to Joe Cox and the Dawgs this year. This years team will play with more heart and passion than last year’s, mark it down.
