Getting ready for kickoff time … whenever that is

There was a time you pretty much always knew when a UGA football game in Athens would be kicking off.
2 p.m.

What is your favorite kickoff time in Athens?

That was back before television was calling the shots. I’ve heard more than a few old-school fans say they miss those times.

Nowadays, you often don’t know until a couple of weeks before a game when it’s going to begin. Will we be in the early slot at noon? The midafternoon kickoff at 3:30? A late afternoon game at 5 p.m.? An early evening game at 7 p.m.? Or the night slot at 7:45?

If we’re playing a nobody and it’s not being televised, it’s probably going to be the current “traditional” kickoff time of 1 p.m.

There are pluses and minuses to most of these kickoff times. If it’s midafternoon, you get more time to do a big lunchtime tailgate before heading to the stadium, but if it’s early in the season you’re sitting in the prime heat of the day and if it’s late in the season and you’re in the North Stands, you’ve got that blinding sun in your eyes in late afternoon.

If it’s one of those early regionally televised games, fans living outside of Athens have to hit the road when it’s still dark, and you barely have time to eat an early lunch or brunch before you’ve got to be in the stands. If it’s an evening game, you get all day to tailgate. But that also means a drunker, more ornery crowd, and if things don’t go well it can get ugly. It was folks tearing up the school grounds after the Auburn loss in 2005 that led to restrictions on where and when fans could tailgate on campus.

Does it matter to you when the kickoff is, or is any time of day the perfect time to watch the Dawgs between the hedges? That’s our Question of the Day. Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or do both.

Pi$$onaDAWG,
I would love for the UGA/GT game to be at 7 P.M. or later. By that time, all the Nerds would either be (a) running back to their dorms to get their LAN’s cranked up for another all night WoW marathon session or (b) passed out on the sidewalk because they can’t hold their alcohol. Either way, we would not have to deal with their retarded cheers and general obnoxiousness inside the stadium.

It dosent matter to me. I just like to watch them all and i know that usually 10 Georgia games will be televised by either cbs, espn, espn2, jefferson pilot, or sports south. They never televise the nobodies Georgia plays and since their schedule is tough, you can bet most if not all of their games will be televised.

I don’t think Timezones count as geography (not required core in most colleges), but thanks for the heads up. All I know is that the sun sets over in the Central Time Zone. I meant that it was a very early game with almost no time to get out there.

Like I’ve explained many times before in this town, I’m not a drinking man…. I am just saying that back in the day, noon kickoff was just right for a nutritious brunch of screwdrivers and/or bloody marys.

Helluva,
Apparently you are an unemployed engineer if you got time to read georgia blogs and snipe.
