P.M. Roundup: Ex-coaches, UGA name team, Stafford’s hair

A couple of recent announcements out of Norman, Okla., illustrate the depth of UGA’s athletics program, as two Georgia grads who also had worked as assistant coaches in Athens were named to head coaching positions at the University of Oklahoma. Georgia assistant golf coach Ryan Hybl, a former UGA golfer, was named the head men’s golf coach at Oklahoma and John Roddick was hired as the Sooners’ head men’s tennis coach. Roddick, brother of tennis star Andy Roddick, was an assistant at UGA from 2000 to 2002. …

Dawg Sports’ T. Kyle King (no relation) takes a fun look at Georgia’s “all-name” football team since 1964. Besides the obvious Jiggy Smaha, he includes Happy Dicks, Hiawatha Berry and Dax Langley. …

My Motown buddy Charles sends along a Detroit Free Press report on how Matthew Stafford is doing. He feels mentally ready to compete for the starting job with the Lions, and he has acquired “girl-approved hair” through his endorsement deal with Axe Hair. “I had to step up my game, and they were there to help me,” Stafford is quoted as telling radio interviewers. “In college, I used to wash my hair with a bar of soap. It’s a little different now.” Maria Sharapova must be so proud.

Fools Gold, I suppose Bill could do one of those lame interviews with UGA football players like the Tech beatwriters are doing with Tech players. They are all the same. Every single one of them goes exactly like this:

AJC Beatwriter: Did you ever imagine that you would play for a 9-4 team in college?

Tech player: Its really a dream come true. I think we shocked the world and put everyone on notice that we are awesome.

AJC Beatwriter: How much more awesome are you going to be in 2009?

Tech player: Oh, alot more awesome. Coach Johnson said that we really needed to work on our awesomeness this spring and I think we did that. I feel so much more comfortable with the offense than I did a year ago. We will undoubtedly be even more awesome in 2009.

AJC Beatwriter: Did you learn anything from getting pounded in to the turf in your bowl game?

Tech player: Not much because we beat ourselves. I guess I learned not to beat yourself. As awesome as we are, its hard to beat another team when you’ve given them a 5 touchdown cushion. I guess we won’t do that anymore. Lesson learned.

AJC Beatwriter: What classes are you taking this summer?

Tech player: I’m taking math and science. Its really really hard.

AJC Beatwriter: I think I know the answer to this, but what is the greatest thing that will ever happen to you in your entire life?

Tech player: Beating Georgia by a whole field goal. Its something you can tell your grandkids about.

AJC Beatwriter: Is there anything that you would like to tell the five Tech fans that care enough about the football team to read my blog?

Tech player: THWG!!!

And so on and so forth. Yeah, that’s real groundbreaking stuff.

Nah I was really expecting more of a visions of grandeur topic. Examples: Will UGA have less excuses this year in regards to youth and injuries as it has been for last last two years? Will the upcoming year of excuses be predicated upon total absence of experience at QB and RB since the departure of Stafford and Moreno? Will the rest of receiving corps be able to catch the ball since teams will double up on AJ since they looked so terrible in the spring game on ESPN earlier this year? Will UGA finally execute a trick play without it blowing up in their face? Can UGA dominate in the red zone and also in 3rd and short situations instead of struggling that has seem to plague CMR since his arrival at UGA? Will this be another year of a fools gold football team ? THE TRENDS CONTINUE! MARK IT DOWN!!!!!!

Bill, hate to say it but your topics are getting a little “like ,grasping for air”? I guess that you are trying to keep up the interest in this “down time” until Sept. About the earlier topic today, if the Dogs go ,say, 8-4 or 7-5, for the next two years or so, and lose again to UF and GT, yes, the heat will be turned up on CMR. If the “money folks”get restless, the “seat” will get hot! I personally think the world of CMR, but if all these so called top ten recruiting classes do not translate to many wins and some SEC {at least} titles, then some action may need to be taken. Spurrier said it years ago, ” UGA has all of these great recruiting classes, but what happens to them?” Maybe what happens on paper does not translate to what happens on the field.Coaching?

You know, you’re columns consist of nothing but about one paragraph of about nothing. Thinking up a couple of topics and then asking the readers to write in doesn’t take much journalistic know-how. The AJC ought to pay your salary to the readers. What a farce!

I have found my dream job! According to EDSBS, a reporter that covers Da U for Canesports.com stated that former Miami head coach Coker’s assistants were doing their recruiting on Rivals.com. I wonder if Ol’ Saint Nick knows that I can recruit without leaving the office? Are there any head coaches out there tonight? How much are you paying those jerks that bring those losers and pot heads into your program, Mr Coach? Always causing trouble and then turning on You! Don’t worry about me blabbing to the press or the NCAA. I know how to keep my mouth shut and I will protect the boss at all costs! How much WILL this cost you ask? I will be your recruiter for a paltry hundred grand a year! {Seventy if you pay me under the table.} Oh, and a car. I know my way around Rivals and Scout and, as you see, I work for practically nothing! Just look at what UT is paying Coach O! I’ll even rip my shirt off if You want. Are there any old “tear away” jerseys still around? Anyway, why waste your valuable time in Hooterville waiting for some pimply faced teenager to get out of shop class? You could be at home with your family, Mark, or on the golf course, Steve. Just call old Shane and your worries are over!

Although you left out the part about his ring:

AJC Beatwriter: I don’t see you wearing your ring anymore, what happened to it?

Tech player: Um, yeah, it got stole by a thug just off campus but Coach J said he will give me a quarter so I can get another one out of the machine in the student center.

I am sure you are aware of this, but did not mention that John Hybl (new OU head golf coach, former UGA golfer and assistant coach) is the brother of Nate Hybl, former UGA quarterback who transferred to OU and was Rose Bowl MVP in 2002. Those guys have deep ties to both schools. Thanks for doing such a great job with your column . . . really enjoy it!

Cuz can we drop the RING thing. most school make rings for their teams and the Players wanted to put the UGA score on it. Tech didn’t make the rings because of the UGA game. Our guys didn’t sell their rings on-line either. I love that Matt’s hair got him a job already. That is too funny, but hell use what you got. He will make bank for his floopy mop and I would too.
