P.M. Roundup: Dobbs on defense’s ‘mentality’

One aspect of the Macon Telegraph’s story about DeMarcus Dobbs that’s drawn comment is the fact that the backup defensive end’s two interceptions last year ranked second only to the five snagged by strong safety Reshad Jones, who was part of a secondary that was notably unproductive in that regard. But it’s also worth noting a quote from Dobbs about Georgia’s difficulty getting to opposing QBs last year that underlines the lack of on-field leadership. “A lot it had to do with injury,” he said, “but it was also our mentality out on the field. This entire offseason we’ve been working on changing the mentality. We’ve been working so hard every day, just trying to improve, and I think it will show up on the field.” Let’s hope he’s right. …

What transpires when two Bulldog football legends play golf? Check out Buck Belue’s report on a round with Kevin Butler. …

The Tuscaloosa News once again has crunched the numbers using a complicated point system involving everything from poll standings to recruiting rankings to attendance and come up with its list of the 25 all-time top college footbal programs. Georgia places ninth, behind (from the top down) Ohio State, Southern Cal, Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State and Notre Dame. Tennessee is 10th and Florida is 11th. Tech came in 22nd.

The Tuscaloosa News objectively crunching numbers to come up with the 25 all-time top college football programs is like PETA objectively crunching scientific data to come up with the top ten reasons we should not eat the flesh of animals (or swat flys)! LOL

Do they even know what mentality means? Give them a dictionary to look it up. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

We definitely lacked vocal leadership last year, and hopefully that will change this year. Jeff Owens should anchor the defensive line in that dept, while R.Curran appears to be that voice for LBs. I personally know B.Evans, and know from talks with him he’s definitely embracing the senior leadership role both on and off the field and is not alone.

On offense, Joe Cox appears to have a fiery “let’s go!!!” kind of attitude and I think the team will respond well and rally around him.

I know a lot of jokes were made about Tebow’s speech after the Ole Miss loss last year, but the team obviously responded and rallied behind him.
It’s one thing for a coach to rip you a new one, but when a respected teammate who you sweat and bleed with does it takes on a whole new meaning. Look at the best teams in any sport at any level, they all have at least one guy that can fire up and rally the team to dig deeper than any coach ever could. M.Jordan is probably the best example of this. There’s always room for the quiet “lead by example” guys, but you must have a RESPECTED vocal leader, and it’s something the 08 Dawgs were lacking.
Hopefully things will be different in that regard this year.
GO DAWGS!

All this blather of “leadership.” JaxDawg, ask B. Evans if he plans on getting burned every other play this year like last.

The Dawgs need to quit blaming lack of production on psychology and commit themselves to working harder to get more physical. If you don’t care enough about beating your opponent to be able to play lights out for the 1 hour that your unit is on the field per week, then you need to take up golf.

The reason Ga dropped to 9th was because the fans in attendance had to actually stay and watch the entire game.

Also, the highly rated recruits in signed in previous years had to actually contribute.

Gatorman770 is right about the Tuscaloosa news but we don’t need them to make our case.

Tuscaloosa news actually had Bama rated very poorly last year in terms of alltime great programs. We were something like 6th or 7th. By most reasonable, objective standards Alabama is usually 3rd to 5th in alltime success standards if you just want to measure completely objective standards. Here is why we deserve recognition to be in the top 3-5 tier of all time great programs.

1) We have won more games than anyone over the last 100 years of football.

,2) We have more bowl game appearances and bowl wins than anyone

3) We have won 25 conference titles including 4 when the sec was the southern conference/ I don’t think anyone except possibly OU and Michigan have won more conference titles.

4) We are 1st or 2nd in number of national championships no matter what criteria you want to use to count national titles,. Sure,we don’t have 12 legit national titles. But neither does anyone else. But whatever criteria you want to use we are almost always 1st or 2nd behind ND or OU whether you want to use more liberal or more stringent criteria.

5) We are 2nd in the nation only to OU in number of double digit winning seasons with 29. This, along with our bowl records, shows us as the most consistent top tier team in the country. Everybody has their up and down periods but in terms of overall consistency its hard to argue against us.

6) I believe we are 5th or 6th in alltime winning %. The 8 wins taken away from the 1993 season from our initial probation in 1995 hurt us but otherwise we are 4th or 5th in on the field winning %.

7) In terms of pure on the field wins its the same thing. We are 4th or 5th in all time number of on the field wins.

8) In the qtr centuries of 1925-1950, 1951-1975, and 1976-2000 we rank between 3rd and 5th in number of wins and winning % in each of these qtr centuries. The polls didn’t start until 1926 I believe and so I left out the 1st qtr century of 1900-1925. Also, there was virtually no intersectional play in the early 1900s and the big bowls hadn’t really started either and gotten into full swing until the 1920s I believe. The Rose Bowl might have started earlier like 1913. Not sure though but one thing is certain. It wasn’t until the 1920s that just about all of the major D-1 programs today had their programs up and running and some intersectional games started.

The bottom line is that by any objective measure and criteria we are undoubtedly a top 5 and maybe top 3 all time program. That is of course only if you want to look at the facts.

Good to hear players say that everyone is working harder and is more focused this year. However, the players said that same thing last year and every other year as well. We won’t really know the truth until we see the results on the field.

not trying to be mean, but even fl. st to clemson, nc st., ant vt are rowdy yet civilized during tailgating. that said… i truly hope the dawgs are undefeated heading to the tech game! just look at cpj’s stats for his second season with past two programs in rushing.— second season will be one for the storyBOOKS. then third- next recruiting class is already taking the best of ga and you’ll see some from texas and louisana too. thwg!

Another great year for the dogs, and we should be happy for all the accomplishments of our teams. Football was good, and won some big games. Basketball was not so good, but the lady dogs were good. Baseball, Golf, Softball, track all did well. Gymdogs won another NC. I hope we are beyond the trash I read posted by some fool P on a Dawg. Really trashy and classless. Looks like Ted Davis has returned to Tech and Tucker Fredrickson to Auburn. Where is Danny Ford when you need him.

Take a breath Chris O Bomb, put down your drink or bong. CPJ is a fine coach, and he will do a good job. He will win a few and lose a few. We are still waiting for his top recruiting class which you are speaking of. Good luck though see you in November.

I don’t think there is any doubt that Alabama is the premier college football program over the past, say, fifty-sixty years. Over the past 5, 10 or 15 years however, that rating slips considerably. Over the shorter span I would elevate all 3 Florida schools, LSU and possibly UGA ahead of the Tide.

dawgs defense will return to it’s normal dominating self unless we lose 25% of our starters this year,as we did in 2008.

senior leadership will be far better on both sides of the ball!

Bill, I don’t get why people are hacking you for your blog materials. I think the “defensive leadership” issue is important and a worthy topic to discuss. If anything you may be trying to hard.

Your customers/readers should inject more subject material they would like to discuss vs having you come up with all the topics of discussion. Have a “Dawg Day” and thanks for what you do.

Start by having a blog where readers and posters ignore idiots, they are “usually” identified in the first sentence. How many times do we have to tell someone if we ignore idiots they will go away most of the time.
