Like anyone else with strong ties to Athens I’m dismayed today by the news of the Georgia Theatre fire. My son and brother Jon both called early this morning with the news. Jon was trying to go to the bank in downtown Athens but couldn’t because of the power grid being turned off. He said with all the cops trying to direct traffic with the lights out plus the smoke and a couple of helicopters hovering up above it was a wild scene.
I go way back with the Georgia, having had my Mom take me to Disney films there when I was quite young and my uncle was an usher for the theater (remember ushers?). I wrote about the theater’s original conversion to a music hall for The Atlanta Constitution during my rock critic days and I saw several terrific concerts there. My son has been to a lot of shows at the Georgia in recent years.
It’s a big part of the cultural life of Athens and UGA students, and I really hope owner Wilmot Greene is able to rebuild. Athens wouldn’t be the same without it.

Another classy post by Engineer.
Great shows. The Earl Scruggs Revue. Old Doc Watson playing a guitar like no one with sight could. REM before they would enunciate the words. Talk about the passion. And local Country sensations, The Normal Town Flyers singing Dooley, the moonshiner, not the Coach.
One great place to be on an Athens night.

Helluva Engineer,
I have been to both Gainseville and Tuscaloosa. Both places are Athens wannabees and frankly, nothing compared to Athens. Athens is BY FAR the best college town I have ever been to, everywhere else is the minor leagues. Also, other towns merely wish they had the music scene that Athens does or a cool place like the Theatre. Get a life and quit being jealous of Athens, loser.

Tech fans being the weird losers that they are get on UGA’s page first and maybe get on tech’s. My question is why? I hate Tech with a passion and have no desire to get on your blogs each and every day. Even when we won those 7 years in a row, I would say something once right after the game and that would be the end of it. Tech’s second victory over UGA this decade and yall think yall have the upper hand in the rivalry. Also why do you tech fans believe yall are in the same class as bama, fla, lsu, always making reference with Tech and those teams? You have to win ten games on average to join that class and actually win a conference championship. Also when you losers say UGAG and UGAY, you sound like children. No other rivals of UGA call us those names. So congrats on being the lamest fans in the south. In regards to the theater, had a blast seeing Rehab and Sevendust, good times.

The sadness of the Georgia Theater burning down is a lot bigger than UGA vs. GT. I am a Tech fan and I am extremely saddened today for the loss of one of the greatest and most legendary concert venues it rock and roll history. This was the birthplace and original stomping grounds of The B-52’s and R.E.M.

What I don’t understand is why so many people on here equate a school rivalry with the culture of a town. They hate Georgia, so they hate Georgia Theatre. However, mature people like myself and a few select Tech fans on here (tech7) realize that every school has its own culture, and Athens, GA is among the best in the country. Athens has always been known for its music. It is considered one of if not THE best college music town, and Georgia Theatre was at the center of it all. It’s not just a sad day for Athens, GA and for UGA students, it’s a sad day for music. This is the place where so many big-name bands got their start, where so many memories were formed. It is also someone’s livelihood.
I would never dream of laughing at a town for losing one of its premier landmarks, no matter how much I hated the football team that resides in it. Life does not begin with football, nor does it end with it. My advice to those select few who have chosen to be so immature is to grow up and realize what a loss this is to the entire musical community.

Most certainly a sad day for Athens and the Georgia music scene altogether. In this day and age when downloads of music are becoming more popular, the act of underground bands building up their fan base and following is becoming less popular. The Georgia Theatre was one of those venues where bands who had already made a name for themselves regionally and locally could land a Thursday-Saturday night gig during the school year and spread their music and promote their “brand” easily because locals and students in Athens would go to check them out. In combination with the Red and Black and The Flagpole, music lovers (especially of unsigned local/regional bands) could head to the Theatre (and other venues…although not as good) and check out a live act and get some cheap beer. Drew Pilgrim and others who booked bands for that venue were always interested in getting heads in the door to listen to music first and how much money did the bar make second. During the summers, smaller know bands were given the chance to play at the Theatre (rather than somewhere like Mean Mikes or DT’s) and use that great stage and sound gear. On occasion a big act would come through and give the audience a chance to have be a bigger part of the show than those shows at outdoor arenas and amphitheaters.
With venues like the Theatre, The Cotton Club, and others in GA coming down for one reason or another, local musicians and lovers of music are at a loss and more of us should take the time to relish in the opportunities places like the Georgia Theatre gave rather than use this venue to hate. Those of us who played at the theatre and went to shows there know what this place meant to Athens and Georgia in general. WE are all sad to see this happen and we certainly hope that it can be rebuilt to have the charm and sticky floors it did all those years!
Go Dawgs!

Ramblin’ Rick, I felt the same way you did about the UGA fans that laughed at the death of the Tech baseball player. It’s like laughing at a state landmark burning down. People who laugh at someone else’s tradgedy are the scum of the earth. Well Rick, welcome to the club, you can now be happy along with your fellow scum. Who knows, if you leave right now you may find some mother weeping over a five year old girl killed in a driveby and laugh at her. For your information Sir, my friend’s 15 year old grandson has been in town for the past week. So what? This kid happens to be brillant and is being recruited by several major universitys. The boy has had his heart set on going to Tech as long as I have known him. Well Pard, I let him read this blog and the posts. His reaction was, man Tech people can be a bunch of jerks! BTW, the kid is an excellant musician and can name all ther original members of Pink Floyd! So the burning of a musical landmark meant more to a fifteen year old than to you. Now he is leaning more toward Auburn and Wake Forest. On his visit to UGA last summer he met Matt Stafford at a burger joint and asked Stafford to sign his GT cap. The kid said that “I didn’t think Stafford would sign my cap. but I didn’t expect to meet anybody famous. Matt replird, Sorry buddy, but I can’t sign that.” He added, “man, that dude was big!” How many of you posers have the guts to ask Matt ro sign your Tech baseball cap?

I loved the beer served in large popcorn cups. I saw a great fight (Tyson v Holyfield I) there. I saw lots of great bands (Derek Trucks, Rusted Root, Squat, Government Mule). Plenty of memories.
As much a fixture as The Varsity, The Arches, & Sanford Stadium to Athens.

Excellent post SEC 1. We were there at the same time, fondly remember many of the bands you cited. I work out of state for an ABC affiliate and it was big news here. These ignorant posters are just that. As for the Theatre, what charm and ambiance it had, not to mention Drivin-N-Cryin, the Violent Femmes, Stairway To Heaven, just about a “who’s who” for any college student in the absolute COOLEST college town on the planet. Bias aside, ask any sophisticated, well-traveled fan who has spent some time in other locales. Athens is very hard to beat. Just a couple of years ago, it and Madison, WI were #1 & #2 in top college towns as ranked by a well reputed national magazine. Save the drivel postings for those worth of lapping it up. May God grant the decision makers assigned to the Georgia Theatre with wisdom on future decisions for such a timepiece in the Classic City. Go DAWGS!

Ramblin Dick do you really want us to believe you actually know a woman? Spending all your money on Eharmony doesnt mean that you know a woman. Are you refering to the woman that goes by the name Helluva Engineer? Why dont you two hook up together, again, and wear your matching Hairy Potter shirts and head to a comic book convention.

Thank you, John.
It’s always nostalgic driving up Broad Street and remembering those days. When I think of college music scenes, it’s Madison, as you cited, Austin, TX and good ole Athens, GA.
Remember the 40 Watt, Uptown, Rockfish Palace and The Grit? What about TK Hardy’s and some soul food at Weaver D’s (truly automatic for the people!)
Ahh, yes….

Grew up in Athens. Many flicks at the Georgia. Saw Arlo Guthrie there. It will be missed, and yes, Bill, I do remember ushers.
