When legendary Bulldog kickers are mentioned, you frequently hear the names of Kevin Butler and Rex Robinson, but Billy Bennett doesn’t seem to come up as often. Maybe it’s because the musician/kicker was always something of a maverick. Maybe because there isn’t a famous Larry Munson call of one of his game-winning kicks.
Thanks to Bennett, whenever the Dogs bogged down in the red zone, you could usually count on at least 3 points going up on the scoreboard. He ended up as Georgia’s scoring leader all four years he played and among his numerous school records is most field goals in a game — six against Tech in 2001 — and most points in a career (409, ahead of Butler and Herschel Walker).
Robinson says that usually when a kicker attempts an equal number of field goals and extra points, the team is a loser. But in 2003 Bennett attempted 38 field goals and 38 PATs, yet the Dogs went 11-3 and won the SEC East.
So attention must be paid to Billy Bennett. But that’s not to diminish Butler, Robinson or other notable UGA kickers, including Allan Leavitt, Kanon Parkman, Todd Peterson, Steve Crumley and the more recent Brandon Coutu.
So here’s our Question of the Day: Who is UGA’s greatest placekicker? Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or do both.

Who put the foot in ugag football?
Paul Johnson certainly put his boot up ugag’s arse last year…does that count?

Let’s go back further. How about Lou Groza? Or the Toe from Cairo? Go back from before kicking was a position in and of itself.

To M. I am a 4th generation bulldawg, or really third in four generations. I can say without reservations that Tech was more fun with Bobby Dodd than without.
I am delighted that Tech is back. I think you actually have a better coach than Richt, I want you to win the ACC every year and us the SEC, then duke it out between ourselves. Keep you to revelry and the jibbing. We should never have folded like that last year. We need our arses kicked.

Funny, m……. The one that never gets old to me is the time we stomped a mudhole in your a$$ to the tune of 51-7. Or 14 wins out of the last 18 years. That never gets old, either. I expect that the other thing that never gets old to you is when you go back to your bed with the K-Y and the Paul Johnson poster. Hopefully, it won’t get so sticky that you cant hang it back on the wall in order to dry it for your future self-pleasure endeavors.
Oh, and by the way, the best kicker UGA ever had was Kevin Butler.

Butler was kicking field goals off a 2 inch tee or block. He would not have made many of the fields goals if he had to kick off the ground like most of the kickers on your list. That is why Bennett and Coutu should be 1 and 2, with Butler 3rd.

Anyone one of those guys who could kick it out of the endzone. Man those were the days. Opponents starting at their own 20 yard line. I would have to say Butler. But that’s only because I was there when he hit that 60 yarder against Clemson. Great pro career for Butler too. Peterson has done well in the pros. Oh yeah and since he was so productive I guess you would have to include Bennett.

bill, this is too easy….old guys like me are gonna say butler. the people still in diapers are gonna say billy bennett and coutu because they weren’t even alive then…and the ones in between are gonna say John Kasey or Parkman, or Peterson…. how about great clutch kicks from the past:
here’s three that come to mind……
K.Butler 10,000 miles vs. Clemson, Hap hines’ field goal vs. Purdue to cap our comback, Rex (i talked to his parents in the hotel lobby and he missed his first two tonight) Robinson vs. Kentucky.
we all know that if stafford and moreno were kickers they would have been the greatest at that, too…let me take another swig of that kool aide.

Tee, no tee – doesn’t matter. Remember Butler was frequently ‘penalized’ for kicking the ball OUT of the back of the endzone – remember that brief period when that resulted in the opponent starting on the 30 yrd line! That was most stupid NCAA rule ever!

Butler was great, but he kicked off a tee and had a wider goal post. Tees were disallowed in 1988, and the goal was narrowed in 1991. That being said, I’d put my money on Coutu.
Can’t go wrong with either.

John Kasay who is not on your list was another good one.

Not meaning to gripe, but I remember Bennett clunking a couple against UF one year and we barely lost. If memory serves me correct, they weren’t exactly super long shots. As a result, I couldn’t put him on this list.

The reason the AJC listed all of those kickers is simple: they were all very good! I saw all of them play and Butler was the best, nosing out Coutu and Robinson for that honor. P. S.: Anyone who thinks Butler and Robinson couldn’t kick off the ground is misinformed.

Lew, I wasn’t trying to speculate that Butler couldn’t kick off the ground. He did just fine for many years in the pros. I’m just saying that he did kick off a tee in college and had a wider field goal to kick at. That being the case, I’d choose Coutu as a collegiate kicker.

You fleabags have always had good kickers. Kevin Butler was far and away your best. Maybe the best in college football (ask Clempson). Rex Robinson #2
I look forward to watching your place kicker this year in Atlanta. To bad, he’ll only kick the ball once, unless he’s the punter too.

A rich tradition of college kickers have passed through Athens. Butler and Kasey are the two most noteable I can think of that went on to succcesful pro careers. ‘Course to we’uns Atop Rocky, the best kicker at UGA are the ones that miss game winners agin us’uns…Favorite named was CoUTu cause you can’t spell CoUTu without UT…

How about Kim Braswell? (just kidding)
1) for those morons who talk about a tee, Butler kicked off the ground in the NFL quite well.
2) Leavitt, Robinson and Butler were fearful weapons that were deployed 60 yards in.
3) Kasay was the best pro of them all
4) Why is Crumley on the list and Kasay not?

Scharff, move to Augusta. We get the Fifth Quarter show after every game on our local Bulldawg station. Butler is a riot. I love the name of the show. It was also the name of my favorite bar while in Athens. I was the last patron to leave that place the night it closed. “You never even called me by my name” was wore out on that jukebox.

I saw Kevin Butler kick the 60-yarder against Clemson, but the most memorable one was the one he missed- a 72-yard attempt against FSU in the Florida Citrus Bowl on the last play of the game that fell just short. The FSU kicker had just missed a game-winning attempt, and Dooley trotted Butler out to kick. The ball was placed on OUR OWN 38 when Butler kicked it. The entire stadium went quiet as we all watched the flight of the ball. Though I was a long way away, it semmed like it was only a couple of feet short. Simply AMAZING!
