Bulldog Bites: Recruiting and conditioning

Everything’s a horserace these days, whether it needs to be or not. Despite Mark Richt’s string of highly ranked recruiting classes, there was grumbling on the recruitnik circuit before last week that Georgia had been slow out of the gate this year, with only four verbal commitments for the 2010 class.

Then Da’Rick Rogers, a highly rated wide receiver announced he plans to be a Bulldog and that seems to have opened the floodgates. The Athens Banner-Herald takes a look at how the Dogs’ verbal commitments have doubled in a week, with the latest being linebacker Demetre Baker from Orange Park, Fla. Baker, who also played running back in high school, made his decision Tuesday during a tour of the campus in Athens.

I generally leave recruiting discussions to the recruiting blog, but if you’ve got any strong feelings on the job Richt is doing in that regard lately, feel free to share them.

Elsewhere, Bleacher Report asks whether some of the Dogs’ recent defensive problems are a result of deficiencies in the strength and conditioning program run by Dave Van Halanger, citing reports that there is no accountability for players working out in the weight room and other coaches have to send assistants to make sure players are working out.

The general effectiveness of the Dogs’ conditioning was a question I heard raised a couple of times last season during the extended run of injuries. What do you think, is this maybe a problem area or should we chalk up last year to a streak of bad luck?

We need more 5 star lineman in the fold, just one or two a year would be good. Superstars like the dumba$$ from Ala that just got drafted or the monster they got coming in.

Don’t know about conditioning, but I think our injuries were bad luck because of the severity; how do you work out a ACL anyway?

Oh, and hire back BVG on defense.

I didn’t think that the strength and conditioning coach was the problem last season. If he is, then perhaps we’ll get a clearer picture this fall.

As far as recruiting, I think CMR has done a very good job the last few years. He has recruited more offensive linemen in the last three years, and I think that is the heart of any program.

The players said it themselves, no one was really held accountable last season and workouts were slack because of it. We’ve got a lot of senior leadership defensively this season so that shouldn’t be an issue but the lack of conditioning really showed last season on defense. The injury thing is a combination of poor conditioning and bad luck. We weren’t in that bad of shape to warrant that many injuries. Sometimes they just happen. I’m sure the coaches want to cover their a**es this year now that there is a little bit of fire under them so I expect to see a marked improvement in conditioning and discipline.

I don’t think Vanhallenger is the problem. Just like Richt he is a high character guy who pushes them to be the best they can be. Both are interested in them becoming young men who lead productive families.

We endured an odd year for injuries. No team could have survived losing 25 players over the year. No one liked the final results of the year but you have to be honest with the situation. Florida wouldn’t have won the national with that many loses.

I am excited about this year with the players coming back it is going to be like a whole new recruiting crop. Go DAWGS!

Kendawg, I beleive your post is right on. We will get a gauge of how the entire program is going this fall. I don’t want to hear excuses for injuries, poor tackling, lack of discipline, poor execution, poor game planning/play calling in the red zone, conditioning, depth, or anything else.

Let’s strap on the helments and get prepared to play SEC style, smashmouth football. Line up and go straight at them. If I have any criticism of Richt, and it’s just my personal philosophy or preference, it’s that he recruits and trys to employ to flashy a style. Don’t get me wrong, I like some surprise or flash, but we should be able to line up physically with any program in the conference, or country and be competitive. We shouldn’t be run off the field by anyone.

I expect a couple of losses this year, maybe more, maybe less, but bottom line is we have to be “competitive” or make some changes. Richt and staff have had the “benefit of the doubt and patience” long enough. It’s time to produce. GATA Dawgs….

June 17th, 2009

I don’t know what the hell was wrong with our defense last year but I am confident that back luck had nothing to do with it. Bad luck doesn’t get you schooled by a freshmen Kentucky quarterback. Bad luck doesn’t get you beaten by 39 points at the hands of the Gators. Bad luck doesn’t give up 26 freaking points in one quarter to Georgia Tech after you held them to 12 in the first half. No, there is probably a little more involved than mere bad luck when things like this happen.

With that said, I am also confident that Dave Van Halanger has very little to do with our defense’s performance last year. He has been the strength and conditioning coach at Georgia since Richt arrived. Strength and conditioning did not seem to be a problem when guys like David Pollack, Thomas Davis, Odell Thurman, Jonathan Sullivan, etc. etc. etc. were smacking our opponents absolutely silly week after week. I don’t recall strength and conditioning being a problem then, nor was it a problem with Van Halanger held the same position at Florida State when they were finishing top 5 in the polls without breaking a sweat.

Has it ever once occurred to anyone that the problem may not be with the coaches, strength and conditioning program, or injuries? Could the problem possibly be the players themselves? Hardly anyone ever mentions this. Why is this so taboo? I mean Matthew Stafford threw for about a gazillion yards last ,despite running for his life half the time, and most of you have never had any problem throwing him under the bus. Why does the defense get a free pass? Where are our David Pollacks and Thomas Davises? I don’t see any. I see a bunch of guys that had a lot of stars by their name before they even played a down of college football. That’s about it. Do you think its possible that we’ve got a bunch of overrated primadonnas right now that have no idea what it takes to win championships? I think that’s very possible. Meanwhile, our opponents have guys like Brandon Spikes, Rolando Mcclain, and Terrance Cody. I submit that we don’t have guys like that and that’s why we got our tails handed to us last year on several occasions.

Please people stop making pathetic excuses for our defense. I am begging you. You are doing them no favors. Good day.

Bash this kid all you want but you will soon see he is one of the best players in the state of Florida. This kid runs a 4.45 in the fourty and has a 41 inch vertical. I have read several reviews on him and the consensus is that this kid is a PUNISHING linebacker. I think you can see from his vertical that he has extremely strong legs and judging from him winning the shot put (sp?) he is extremely strong up top. He hasn’t been evaluated by rivals because they just got his video a week or two ago but scout has him as a 4 star prospect. This is a great pickup for the dawgs.

Strength and conditioning isn’t where the finger needs to be pointed for the following reasons:

1. Most of the injuries involved ligaments, tendons or seperated shoulders, and no amount of condidtioning can prevent those.

2. Many of our problems on defense last year had more to do with poor tackling, and penalties from a lack of discipline again not a conditioning issue.

3. Look at the number of UGA weight lifting records that have been broken under Van Hallenger. We haven’t had as many in the past couple of years, but if you look at the current weight lifting records I wouldn’t expect to see many broken as the bar has been set pretty high. Also we’ve had more sub-4.4 guys than any other period.

The strength and conditioning program is fine, and definitely one of the last places anyone should be looking to point fingers at as a weakness to the program, if anything it’s been one of the more consistant strengths.
GO DAWGS!

Tampagator,
We also beat out Miami and South Carolina who had offered Baker also. He is listed as a 4 star OLB on scout.com that runs a 4.45 40. That’s the fastest 40 time of the top 30 OLBs listed on scout including the 5 star guys. Isn’t it your coaches philosophy to have the “fastest team in the nation”? Quit hating man.

I was one of those complaining about recruiting. I will still complain, just less. Bennett kid probably won’t play. Losing too many top recruits this year, even some top boys from GA. Still wondering what happened with Lattimore. Still gotta long way to go recruiting wise.
Scout has Baker as a 4-star but he’s not even rated on Rivals. Kinda strange. His speed is what excites me about him. He should be a beast.

Learn to take and accept some criticism, which, by the way, is a healthy part of football. Why is it such a big deal that I am not totally pleased with the way we are recruiting this year? Why is it such a big deal that I don’t think Bennett will play much? I mean, look at it subjectively. His HS stats are nothing special. He was recruited by middle-tier programs. What are you, his father? Nope? Just crazy then.

I saw some stats last year on players max out on various exercises.

Seems like 3 or 4 powercleaned over 400 lbs

A couple dozen benched well in excess of 425 lbs.

A few squated over 600.

I mean, you can’t really say knee injuries are an effect of lack of conditioning.

Hell, Tiger Woods tore his knee up playing golf & I know he’s in top shape.

I’m not sure about shoulders either, Durham looked to be in shape.

WTF, Bill is just trying to stir the pot again. My Gawd, quoting from the Bleacher Report! Don’t bother linking to that one unless you want a laugh. The Senator called BR the “clown car” of College football blogs. Bill, if BR is what you are shooting for why not let Ramble On write your blog?. BTW, will some of you MDs please tell me just what exercises prevent torn ACLs and stress fracture in feet?

UGA Players better be held accountable for working out…Know that the Florida Gators hold players accountable…When UGA beat the Gators 2 yrs ago Urban Meyer made all Florida players do 42 extra reps of each excercise as UGA scored 42 points…then the next year Florida killed us…the Gator players remembered and made sure that they played well and had the strength and conditioning to do it.

Guys, I just got this hip new pocket protector that has individual places for each of my pens, and one of them is even big enough to hold my pen with the 4 colors that you can switch between that I’ve had since 4th grade! It’s wizard! One of my favorite things to do is go online and review sports blogs in between my Calc III homework and spout off about one score from one game because that day was the best in my whole life! Well, maybe not as good as that time I managed to calculate the square root of 3 to 27 decimal places in math club. I saw more beautiful women that day in Athens then I’ll see in all 6 years I’ll spend here at Tech getting my degree, good thing once I get it I will be entitled to call all Georgia grads dumbasses even though I have no people skills from my lack of a social education. Oh man, I have to go, my buddy Napu is challenging me to a Halo 3 tournament on my modified Xbox 360. I spent my whole allowance to get that bad boy modded out and now I can totally kick e-ass. You guys at Georgia may be more aesthetically pleasing, but only I know that I just used a dipthong!

WTF, Sorry pal, I am not going there. It just gripes my butt when people cite “sources” and attack someone like CDVH, who is widely known as one of the best S&C coaches in Div 1. Okay Bill, exactly which coaches are not getting those reports and who are they sending to monitor the workouts? If You want to say CDVH isn’t doing his job then name some names! I am not too concerned about recruiting. UGA usually finishes in the top ten and Richt goes after the players he wants at UGA. Rivals had guys like Milner, Boling, Thomas Davis, Kelin Johnson, and Ben Jones rated at three stars and they did pretty well.

Football is a collision sport, injuries are going to happen. There is no amount of exercise or wieght training that would have prevented Owens or Sturdivant’s torn ligaments last year. And as far as I’m concerned, I’m fairly certain that the majority of these kids understand that playing football is their job, their compensation is an education.

That being said, I am also fairly certain that there are kids that are more self motivated than others. But wouldn’t you think from just looking at these kids they work out?

I know that they hold them out of full contact practice a lot when they are banged up, but overall as a team I’m not going to blame injuries on conditioning. It’s just part of the game.

However, have you ever noticed that Spurrier has every single one of his offensive linemen outfitted with rugged hinged knee braces?

Makes you wonder huh?

Ask Saint Simons, he was there on that trip. His mom wouldn’t let him go, but he snuck out with us anyway. He always did admire Goose until that Reggie Ball kid showed up.

Naw, the strength and conditioning program is one of the best in the nation. The kids have to exercise self-discipline in all their activities. The top players bounce back pretty quickly after minor injuries because they are following the prescribed procedures. Others don’t follow instructions and end up staying out too long. Kids are kids and people are people.

Can over lifting at the age of these kids and young adults lead to ligament damage? These kids and young men are lifting a lot of weight. Any thoughts from the kinesiology majors out there or anyone else?

FL DAWG

I guess everyone went out to study for the kinesiology test. I would think that ligaments would be considerably stressed while these kids are growing and that possibly the muscle are over developed beyond the limits of the ligaments. I would think that this would be a problem for every team, if it is actually an issue. I don’t know, just speculating about the rash of ligament damage last year.

It seems that CMR has proven over the years that he can evaluate talent. We’ve had plenty of three-star recruits who went on to become very good players, even stars. Anybody remember David Pollack? Rennie Curran has shown that you don’t have to be 6ft3 to be a great linebacker. If CMR wants Baker to be a Dawg, that’s good enough for me.

Strength and Conditioning. The Goff years had no Strength and Conditioning is a fact. I talked to many of them back then also talked to board members and associate athletic director who became aware of this. We all know how this turned out. I live in Fl. and know for a fact how excellent their program is. Tuten was a strength coach with Fl. in the Goff years and we all remember what SOS had to say.Sos— Ga. has all these top recuiting classes and what happens to them? SOS was right and I found out for a fact.PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN. PS there is one guy still on staff at UGA that was there in the Goff years.
