What was year’s high point for UGA?

There were a lot of ups and downs for UGA teams in the 2008-2009 school year.

What was the high point for Bulldog athletics in 2008-2009?

The football Dogs were anointed the pre-season No. 1 for the first time, though they didn’t stay there long. Some devastating losses followed. But for the sixth time in the past seven years Mark Richt’s team won at least 10 games.

The basketball season is best forgotten, but the final Gym Dogs team guided by retiring Suzanne Yoculan won the program’s fifth consecutive national championship, and the UGA equestrian team notched its second straight national title.

The baseball team spent much of the regular season at No. 1 (another first for UGA), though a late-season collapse ended that. The Diamond Dogs did make it to the NCAA Tournament, though, and led the nation with 11 players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

And the softball team made its first trip to the Women’s College World Series and finished the year No. 4 in the nation.

Which leads me to our Question of the Day: What was the high point for Bulldog athletics this year? For my money, it’s the Gym Dogs keeping their stranglehold on the NCAA championship. Sure, it was great having the football Dogs start the season out No. 1, but the fact that they lost that spot well before losing a game makes that something of a bittersweet memory.

Maybe you agree. Perhaps not. Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or do both.

Yeah cuz b/c Michigan State was really good with the one dimensional offense and an o-line that looked like they’ve never had to pass block before. I think the high point was staying within 3 of TECH.

Bill:

This is why this program is pathetic:

“The football Dogs were anointed the pre-season No. 1 for the first time, though they didn’t stay there long. Some devastating losses followed. But for the sixth time in the past seven years Mark Richt’s team won at least 10 games.” – Bill King

To be satisfied with winning at least 10 games, especially in 2008 when the team was loaded and picked #1, is pitiful.

CMR continues to get a free pass with the media and fans, and the main reason UGA is the laughing stock of all D-1 football, and gets no respect from the coaches or media.

Put some pressure on CMR and tell him to win them all or move on.

Bobo interceptions idiot,

The only joke on this blog is you. “Win them all or move on”. That statement alone proves what a moronic idiot you truly are. The national champions don’t even win them all most years.

Why don’t you stay off the UGA blogs if you are such a jealous hater. Bring back Donnan? That shows you are nothing resembling a UGA fan or alumni. Just leave.

When Damon Evans finally looked at the overwhelmingly bad, downward statistical trend since 2005, came to his senses, overrode Mark Richt’s insane loyalty to his BFF, and FIRED WILLIE MARTINEZ!

SO, unfortunately, they di “beat the crap” out of us, and no matter how you spin the second half and the final score, a fact is a fact!

I don’t know why you UGA fans cannot see that. I honestly don’t. Maybe it’s blind loyalty. The UT fans know when a good thing has gone bad. Maybe its your opportunity to see that the UGA program has peeked and will NEVER win a national title.

Honestly, the 2008-2009 school year was dissapointing for UGA sports in comparison to 2007-2008.

2007-2008
Football:11-2 and finished 2# in the country
Men’s Basketball: Mediocre team but won the SEC Tournament
Baseball: Went to the College World Series
Gynastics: National Champions

2008-2009
Football: finished a mediocre 10-3 after starting season ranked 1#
Basketball: Worst record in the SEC( a WEAK conference) and Felton got canned mid-season
Baseball: Mediocre year after starting seaon ranked 1#
Gynastics: National Champions

The Lessons Learned
1. Preseason rankings mean nothing
2. Complacency is a sin
3. Sometimes coaching changes need to be made for the betterment of the program.
4. For all the hype, UGA is a Good not Great athletic program

Mike Bobo 17 INT,
Yes, maybe if we put some pressure on Richt to have an undefeated season, he would finally do that. While we’re at it, let’s put some pressure on Pete Carroll to have an undefeated season. He’s been slacking ever since USC’s last national title. Same with Bob Stoops. Alabama fans put pressure on Nick Saban for most of last year, but then they quit putting pressure on him later, so he told his team not to bother with winning their last two games. Florida fans didn’t put any pressure on Urban Meyer, so he lost to Ole Miss. Then the fans put pressure on him, so he told his team to win all the rest of their games.
If all these fans would just wake up and start putting more pressure on all the coaches, I could finally live my dream of turning on SportsCenter and hearing that every team won today! Yea!

Why are some football fans so uneducated? Alabama is not forfeiting any wins. They are being forced to “vacate” wins; meaning that the opponents in those games cannot claim a victory and the Alabama win is erased.

From a Clemson fan, your high point was probably man-handling ASU on national TV. Your low point was probably the Alabama game just because most people turned it off after the first half and didn’t see that you at least tried to come back. Congrats on gymnastics…even if it is a worthless college-level sport, that kind of domination should not be ignored.

Mine was definitely senior day at Sanford Stadium. What a great way to send out the seniors….Tech’s Seniors. The best part is, that was the last time Moreno and Stafford got to play at their home stadium, and it was a loss. What a great way to end your UGA careers at home.

I guess the lows for the DAWGS had to be the first half against ALABAMA, The Blackout Idea in general, Moreno getting stuffed by Spikes, Richt’s desperation onside Kick. Multiple missed field goals. Meyer’s Timeouts, Stafford and Moreno not scoring a single touchdown against UF, No dance party at the UF game, Stafford’s multiple INTS. I guess getting completely annihilated in all aspects of football would be the low point in that game. Last but not least, losing to Tech, and basically the whole 2nd half of that game. That about sums it up

Not to sound too corny but the highlight of the 2008 football season was when we didn’t fold like a tent after the embarrassing Florida loss. It would have been very easy to do. All of our goals were out of reach. There was nothing much left to play for, but the guys showed some guts by sticking it out and finishing with a respectable 10 wins.

The preseason #1 ranking was what it was. They didn’t ask for it. They didn’t vote themselves #1, nor did we fans. The same haters criticizing UGA’s #1 preseason ranking in 2008 are the same fans pounding their chests about how awesome their teams will be in 2009. You know who you are Techies and Gators. We’ll see if your teams can do any better. Don’t go crying to mommy when the tables have turned and your teams have failed to live up to expectations. That’s what’s so great about college football. The 35 point loss happened –just as the 85 point loss happened for your team. The highpoint was watching a GT team –a team that will only get better and better in the coming years– roll up 409 yards rushing on the pre-season #1. GT will be better and UGA will not be as good. GT will win two, three, perhaps four in a row over the dawgs in the coming years, so get used to the bragging –you’re just going to be receiving your comeuppance.
