There were a lot of ups and downs for UGA teams in the 2008-2009 school year.
The basketball season is best forgotten, but the final Gym Dogs team guided by retiring Suzanne Yoculan won the program’s fifth consecutive national championship, and the UGA equestrian team notched its second straight national title.
The baseball team spent much of the regular season at No. 1 (another first for UGA), though a late-season collapse ended that. The Diamond Dogs did make it to the NCAA Tournament, though, and led the nation with 11 players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
And the softball team made its first trip to the Women’s College World Series and finished the year No. 4 in the nation.
Which leads me to our Question of the Day: What was the high point for Bulldog athletics this year? For my money, it’s the Gym Dogs keeping their stranglehold on the NCAA championship. Sure, it was great having the football Dogs start the season out No. 1, but the fact that they lost that spot well before losing a game makes that something of a bittersweet memory.
Maybe you agree. Perhaps not. Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or do both.

Yeah cuz b/c Michigan State was really good with the one dimensional offense and an o-line that looked like they’ve never had to pass block before. I think the high point was staying within 3 of TECH.

…Chip Towers from this blog, thus ending his infatuation with seeing how many athletes he could trash in a public forum for doing what a lot of college students do – and that is get in trouble with the law, though unless you are an athlete nobody reads your name in the paper. He just loved bashing the UGA athletes under the guise of “journalist pursuit”. And to know that he is a UGA grad is even more sickening!

Bill:
This is why this program is pathetic:
“The football Dogs were anointed the pre-season No. 1 for the first time, though they didn’t stay there long. Some devastating losses followed. But for the sixth time in the past seven years Mark Richt’s team won at least 10 games.” – Bill King
To be satisfied with winning at least 10 games, especially in 2008 when the team was loaded and picked #1, is pitiful.
CMR continues to get a free pass with the media and fans, and the main reason UGA is the laughing stock of all D-1 football, and gets no respect from the coaches or media.
Put some pressure on CMR and tell him to win them all or move on.

The program is a joke, scrub it and use Sanford for the Ladies Gymnastics, because they are the only team bringing titles to this town.

Bobo interceptions idiot,
The only joke on this blog is you. “Win them all or move on”. That statement alone proves what a moronic idiot you truly are. The national champions don’t even win them all most years.
Why don’t you stay off the UGA blogs if you are such a jealous hater. Bring back Donnan? That shows you are nothing resembling a UGA fan or alumni. Just leave.

When Damon Evans finally looked at the overwhelmingly bad, downward statistical trend since 2005, came to his senses, overrode Mark Richt’s insane loyalty to his BFF, and FIRED WILLIE MARTINEZ!
Oh wait… I only dreamed that.
Well, I guess I have to put that as number 1 for me, even though it was just a dream.

It was Paul Johnson cramming that high school offense up your overrtated arses. And then turning to the ugag crowd, who had been taunting him all game with we aren’t Citadel or Appy St., and saying “of course you are not Citadel or Appy St…they wouldn’t have quit in the 3rd quarter.
Paul Johnson is going to kick you dawgs from now on…mark it down.

…I was there (for the first half anyway) and from what I have heard, if Saban had not called off the troops it could have been 65 – 31 – after UGA pulled within 14 UA scored again at will (again, another indictment of WM defense) to turn back the UGA momentum. SO, unfortunately, they di “beat the crap” out of us, and no matter how you spin the second half and the final score, a fact is a fact!

Cuz, you’re an idiot. Alabama loses their victories. You don’t get a W. You’re stupid.
Anyway, the best moment for me was realizing that the UGA seniors lost their last game of their careers on their home field to their “little brothers”. They can NEVER get that back.
45-42. Sad also, that the UGA fans have to point at the LSU game as a backup. What a joke!

Robert, did I make you upset? Don’t even get me started on how Tennessee has had its way with Georgia over the years..
What is even funnier, is that Georgia Tech is on the rise while UGA will be the “next Tennessee”. Mark Richt, although a great guy, is the next Fulmer.
I don’t know why you UGA fans cannot see that. I honestly don’t. Maybe it’s blind loyalty. The UT fans know when a good thing has gone bad. Maybe its your opportunity to see that the UGA program has peeked and will NEVER win a national title.

Honestly, the 2008-2009 school year was dissapointing for UGA sports in comparison to 2007-2008.
2007-2008
Football:11-2 and finished 2# in the country
Men’s Basketball: Mediocre team but won the SEC Tournament
Baseball: Went to the College World Series
Gynastics: National Champions
2008-2009
Football: finished a mediocre 10-3 after starting season ranked 1#
Basketball: Worst record in the SEC( a WEAK conference) and Felton got canned mid-season
Baseball: Mediocre year after starting seaon ranked 1#
Gynastics: National Champions
The Lessons Learned
1. Preseason rankings mean nothing
2. Complacency is a sin
3. Sometimes coaching changes need to be made for the betterment of the program.
4. For all the hype, UGA is a Good not Great athletic program
