P.M. Roundup: Richt’s family style vs. Kiffin’s stunts … and more

David Hale of the Macon and Columbus papers’ Bulldogs Blog contrasts the stunts and boorish behavior that Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin apparently thinks are needed to attract top recruits with the family atmosphere that permeates Mark Richt’s program at UGA and which is cited by incoming freshman as what prompted them to sign with the Dogs. Definitely worth reading. …

ESPN.com looks at how Georgia is flying under the national radar this season with low expectations from outside observers. It’s put a bit of a chip on the Dogs’ shoulders, as junior defensive end Demarcus Dobbs makes clear. “We’ve got a lot to prove, not only to the media and the fans, but to ourselves,” Dobbs said. “Nobody around here is satisfied by what happened last year.” …

Bleacher Report offers an argument that Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford will not find a place as legends in UGA lore because in leaving school early they “failed to bring to college football fans here in Georgia what they desire most.” What do you think, did they do enough to merit a place in the Dog pantheon or were they just transients stopping by on their way to the NFL?

The Athletic Association reports that for the sixth consecutive year, UGA led the SEC in “The Gender Equity Scorecard VI.” The survey ranked UGA Athletics 19th among the nation’s 115 Division I-A programs. Georgia received a “B” overall grade and ranked seventh among BCS conference schools. North Texas led the survey and was the only I-A school to receive an “A+” grade. Penn State, which earned an “A” grade, was the top BCS program on the ledger. Coincidentally, a Penn State professor did the survey, which scores, grades and ranks athletic programs based on criteria of participation, scholarship, operating expenses, recruiting budget and coaches’ salaries. Complete results from the scorecard can be viewed here.

There’s room for Richt and Kiffin in the SEC. Each will find their share of recruits. One is already successful, and the other is trying everything to be. One’s family style is the Waltons, the other the Addams. Both can work.

One Adams family in the SEC is enough.

Kiffin IMHO is just trying to get some interest in Vol football and it appears to be working. Yeah he might get pounded for a few of his comments, but people are noticing what is happening on Rocky Top.

Ryno–both approaches might work, but are they both moral. Remember, Richt is very religious and very good. He believes in God and stuff like that. He prays all the time. Except when he’s dreaming up end zone stunts like the illegal one he pulled against Florida.

Moreno and Stafford will be treated just like Rex Grossman at Florida…outstanding players while they were on the team, but not legends like Buck B at UGA (or Greene) or like Danny W at UF, i.e. players who stuck it out 4 years to graduate and help the team instead jumping to the NFL for the big bucks!

Do you really think a Political Science professor at Penn State could do a objective survey? That’s like PETA (and that’s not “people eating tasty animals”)doing an objective survey on the benefits of hunting and fishing on our natural resources!

my thoughts….

1. once again, lane kiffin has someone talking about his program. that, in the end, is good for ut.
2 and 3. gatorman – I agree with you to the letter.

Both schools have had 4 year players go on to great NFL careers….Wilber Marshall, Fred Taylor, etc for the gators Rodney Hampton, Hines Ward, and Guy McIntyre for UGA (along with others from both schools.)

That’s yet another reason why we hate Tebow so much…he is UF’s Herschel Walker. But even Herschel took the money and ran….all we can do is play “what if…”

i’m surprised we have gone this long without a “45-42″ post.

The big difference between Kiffin and Richt at this point is, Richt has steady tenure under his belt and he doesn’t need to promote his program to the masses like Kiffin does. Kiffen is doing the right thing for UT because under the last 5 years under Fulmer, UT slipped overall and was getting ready to bring in a recruiting class in 2009 ranked somewhere around 30. Fulmer gets canned, Kiffin arrives and starts shooting off at the mouth…resulting in a 10th ranked class. So, an improvement no doubt. UT will take their lumps this year mainly cause they don’t have a QB worth a damn (unless the former Red Sox walk on guy turns out to be good) and will do good to get to a lower bowl game…but, if and when they land another Manning-eque QB, teamed with all their good recruits, we can officially say they’ve turned the corner on their way back to competing with everyone in the SEC.

Herschel left early, but after a National Championship. Stafford and Moreno won’t be looked at with any great affection because they were not part of anything that will be greatly memorialized. I certainly don’t blame them for leaving, but I sure wish they had been able to bring home at least an SEC championship.

Being a proud graduate of the flagship University in the State of Georgia, I take great offense to those “fans” who only care about wins and losses. These players and coaches represent the alumni, the student body, the faculty and in large measure reflect, for better or worse, the values of the people of the State of Georgia. The University of Georgia is bigger than football. It means more than any winning percentage or Championship trophy. The football team does not have to win a National Championship for me to be proud of them in any given year. For if that were the standard I would be disappointed and lack pride in my school and my team in most years no matter who my school was.

I am proud of the football team at the University when they play hard, play smart, play with passion and otherwise represent the University with class and dignity on and off the field. If the by-product of all that is wins then that is great. If we have to compromise our values to win then I say, “no thank you.” I’d rather be like Vandy than a team like Switzer had a OK in the mid-80’s. If you would have wanted a team that comported itself like Miami did in the late-80’s because “winning is everything” then please just find a different team to pull for. If you wanted a Coach like Spurrier who mouths off about his opponents just because he wins, then please find another team. If you think only a Bob Knight-jerk type can win and we should tolerate “g-d this and g-d that” at press conferences because its all about winnning, then I am sorry but you need to go away.

Bottom-line fans should watch a bottom-line league. Hint: they play on Sundays. Find a team and pull for them. Saturdays are about bigger things then just what shows up on the scoreboard. I loved my Dawgs before the kickoff of the Tech game and loved ‘em every bit as much afterwards. Sure I was disappointed, but the tribute to both Larry and Vince that day were great 10 years from now, I’ll remember that a lot more than the loss and the missed tackes and questionable defensive stratagies. It was a great day to be Dawg fan. Afterall, they all are aren’t they?

Moreno will be remembered more than Stafford. Moreno made some great plays and had that swagger going from him. He should be great in Denver. Stafford had some great plays but i agree that he could’ve at least led us to a SEC championship. Kiffin is the laughing stock of the SEC…i think recruits won’t take him seriously or they’ve already been denied or kicked out of other programs.

Now that I have been able to dry out my hankerchief after reading your post, I’ll try to answer it.

All I’m saying is that if you ask a Dawg fan who the featured running back was in 1980, most would be able to answer accurately, immediately. On the other hand, if you asked them who the featured running back was in 1985, they might have to think about it for a while.

Twenty five years from now, there will have been nothing about the last 3 years that would make most fans remember what years Stafford and Moreno played. It doesn’t necessarily have to be wins and losses. What I will remember the most about Moreno was the announcers proclaiming that UGA would not be able to win the game against LSU if they just kept handing off to Moreno, burning the clock. He had no more gotten that statement out of his mouth and they handed off to Moreno for a long TD run. Twnenty-five years from now I doubt that I will remember much about Moreno or Stafford.

Over the past three years UGA won 30 football games, and that includes Stafford’s freshman season where he was thrown into the fire when Joe T. got injured.

We also won all three of our bowls during that time. I think that is plenty to be proud of

- My opinion about CMR and Kiffin Jr. is they are both 2 different people with different personalities. Whatever works right?
- FL DAWG has a great point, everyone is talking smack about how bad the Vols are going to be the offense maybe under par but he defense will be the factor that keeps them in games.

Mark this down– if either Stafford or Moreno ends up a big NFL star, they will be remembered as “Bulldog Legends” and we will brag forever about them. If they flop in the NFL, then they will fall off the radar and be remembered as good players we enjoyed, but not as legends.

allenlaw is absolutely right. But why not? We didn’t have any championships of any kind during their era, but we should of. Don’t forget we ended up #2 in the nation in 2007. We should of played for the national championship that year too, PERIOD. The media coned us out of it by basicly talking the voters out of it. You are a weak apologist. It sounds like you know you’re making excuses for the fact that you can’t beat the gators, you’re scared now that Tech has a real coach and will actually be competitive, you’re scared of Lane Kiffin even if he is a big joke. Dorsey,

I re read your article. What a freaking joke you are. You’re proud your team isn’t like Miami of the 80s? Didn’t the dawgs have something like 15 players arrested in 1 year last year. Sounds like you’re giving those Miami teams quite a run for their money.

What was that about you would rather have CMR than a loud mouth like Spurrier. The saintly Mark Richt? The same guy who had his whole team run onto the field to celebrate against Florida. The same coach whose team then committed something like 4 or 5 more unsportsmanlike penalties the rest of the first half against the gators. That saintly coach? Is this the same team doing the sideline dancing taunting Auburn 2 years in a row with Knowshon cranking his soulja boy dance? Reminds me a helluva lot of Miami. The only difference is Miami backed up their soulja boy type dancing by whooping their biggest rivals azzes like FSU year in year and year out while the dawgs whimper like whupped mutts against the big boys like the Bammers and Florida 16 out of 19 times. What freaking hypocrisy and what a joke of a guy you are!

George, guess I’ll have to work them into my schedule.

Sure there were more penalties called against the Dawgs in the first half. That endzone celebration got under the refs skin. Apparently it bothered the Urban Legend also cause he made up for it in 2008. Gotta admire his putting a picture of that celebration on his players lockers before the game. As if they needed more motivation. Say what you will of Urban, he is a great coach and a great motivator.

I don’t think that any “true fan” is scared of any opposing team. I can’t wait to play Florida again. I relish playing tougher teams. I am not a big fan of playing games against Northeastern Utah State or other like schools. I bet Gator fans are not happy with the minor league teams they play with the money they spend on tickets either. I am glad that Coach PJ’s has put together a good team at Tech. It will make us play better. And I still love the blackout games. I bet Arizona State will still play a Goldout, or whatever they call it, after we won out there last year. But if we have a blackout, make it a night game or late in the year.

You spend all of your life trolling the UGA blogs because you want to be a DAWG but were never smart enough or good enough at anything in life to get in to UGA.

Save yourself further embarrassment and go to the nerd blogs and stay there.

If somebody wanted to be a UGA fan, they would. Not that hard. Just go to Walmart and buy a cheap 5 dollar shirt with a big G on it. And if they’re not smart enough or good enough (<-wtf?) to get into UGA, then they’re definitely not smart enough for Tech.

As for Moreno, I’m sure everybody of this time will remember his awesome leap over the Michigan St defender (am I correct?). Even as a Tech student, and a longtime Broncos fan, I’m ready for Moreno to make a difference at Denver.
