Junior outfielder Matt Cerione, one of six more Bulldogs selected in the second day of the MLB draft, was taken by the Mariners in the 13th round. Normally an underclassman drafted that low might be expected to return for his senior year to probably improve his draft status the next year (as did the Dogs’ Trevor Holder, who last year was a 10th round pick by the Marlins but came back and this year was taken in the third round by the Nationals). But most Diamond Dogs observers believe Cerione is outta here. Even before the draft, the scuttlebutt circulating in Athens was that Cerione, who hit .291 with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs this season but came in for some pointed and very public criticism from head coach David Perno, would not be returning to Athens. …
Meanwhile, is there any chance Rich Poythress, drafted in the second round by the Mariners, will return for his senior year in Athens? Talking with Georgiadogs.com, he says: “I feel like I’m ready to go play pro ball. I feel like this is my best opportunity to start my career. If things don’t work out I’m not opposed to it; it’s been the greatest three years of my life. Being around that group of guys is something I will cherish the rest of my life. If things don’t work out and whatever happens, that’s something I’m not opposed to.”
Georgia football fans keep wondering who’s going to be the Dogs’ next big hitter in the secondary. Well, the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer says that Mark Richt gave a glowing assessment of Nick Williams at Macon’s Pigskin Preview, noting that the linebacker could be an answer to the depth problem at safety now that John Knox is gone. He compared Williams with a past Dog known for his hard hits. “Nick is a hybrid,” Richt said. “He’s very much like Thomas Davis was, a high energy guy that can really whack. He just loves to play the game.”
David Hale of Bulldogs Blog says Richt has taken note of criticisms that some of his recent comments have sounded a bit whiney. The coach plans to be more circumspect in what he says. “I’m going to give a lot less of my opinion,” Richt said. “A lot of times, I will say things pretty tongue-in-cheek, but it doesn’t read that way. So I’ve just got to guard my words. That’s just the position I’m in, especially this time of year.”
David Ching of the Banner-Herald talked with Richt about how the coach is recharging his battery this summer, cutting back on some of the many commitments that left him drained at the start of the season last year. He’s working out, spending more time with his family on Lake Hartwell, not undertaking any overseas travel. “I was very tired when the season started last year,” Richt said. “I really was. More than I thought I’d be. I want to be fresh.”
Tom Luginbill of Scouts Inc. writes on ESPN.com that Under Armour All-American wide receiver prospect Da’Rick Rogers’ decision to attend the University of Georgia represents a significant pick up for the Bulldogs.
Rogers “is a unique prospect. He possess a rare combination of top-end speed and physical stature (at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds ). It’s easy to find small guys who run well or big, physical guys who don’t. Rogers has both qualities. … Georgia fans have become accustomed to seeing physically, freakish wideouts wearing red and white. With A.J. Green, [Marlon] Brown and Rogers in the program, that won’t change any time soon.”

Normally I wouldn’t get any pleasure out of this but after getting splashed with Bama Stan’s sactimonious spittle for the last year, this is pretty damn funny:
The NCAA will not force Alabama to surrender any future football scholarships today, when it is expected that the Crimson Tide will be forced to vacate at least 10 wins from 2005-2007, according to a Birmingham News report.
The NCAA action is to punish the school for players who improperly got free textbooks for other students. Additionally, Alabama is expected to be placed under three years’ probation and will be ordered to pay an undisclosed fine.
The wins to be surrendered came while former coach Mike Shula and current coach Nick Saban were in charge.
The violations, which Alabama self-reported, occurred from the 2005-06 school year through the fall of 2007. Five players were suspended when the school uncovered the misdeeds.

Hey Bill,
UGA’s wide reciever recruiting is starting to mimick the 90’s FSU glory days of athletic, tall ,fast guys. Back then it seemed like every year FSU had the same person at wideout. With Green, Brown, Charles and Rogers, QB’s Murray and Mett will have some go-getters for the future. Now if we find some D-ends like the ole FSU….

I know tech’s campus is surrounded by ghetto, but really, pointy headed tech nerd , you need to get out of that crack house before you completely lose your mind. Alabama’s third string would win the ACC, with or without textbooks.
I dont take any pleasure in Alabama’;s situation because all schools have crap going on..just some get caught. Be careful when criticizing, next week it might be your team. The penalty of vacating wins seems extremely harsh for the infractions..It merits some kind of probation and reimbursement, but vacating wins? thats ridiculous..and thats coming from a Dawg fan who is still blacked out from last yr.

Hines Ward was the best ever Georgia player. He had it all. Work ethic, heart, positive attitude, team player, athletic ability, etc. He started multiple times and QB, WR and RB. He returned punts and kick offs. He played right through most of his injuries that would have sidelined 99% of football players.

You idiots(and that’s a kind description)who rail about the end zone celebration in the ‘07 GA-FL game don’t know much about football.Coaches take penalities all the time. They actually instruct their players to take a delay of game for a better angle for a field goal or a penalty to get better yardage for a punt.If two players misunderstand who is to call the timeout, a team may be charged with two timeouts back to back(I’ve seen that happen you _ ss holes!!!)What about “icing” the placekicker? The GA bench did get caught up in the celebration which should not have happened but there are misunderstandings and confusion in just about every game played. So the _ s s hole of the entire world(He is the head As_ and Head Football Coach at “FU Any Way We Can University”)called timeouts to punish GA last year?I think he just showed what a poor dumb ass sport he really is!!Lots of folks, not just UGA will remember that.

David Hale used to write for the Albany Herald and his blog is usually pretty good, at least when he sticks to football and drops the reality show chatter. I can’t believe Hale would ask CMR about something as stupid as a few idiots thinking Richt was whiney. A word of advice for CMR, talk to real reporters that know football and ignore idiots that worry about a coach being whiney! Oh, and coach, remember the old truism that if you listen to the fans you wind up sitting with the fans! Glad to see CMR has taken note of Nick Williams. The thought of UGA’s D in a 3-4 with Jeff, Geno, and Kade up front and Williams, Washington, Gambel, and Curran at LB makes me jones for the season to start. Kind of funny how GA fans look at Tech’s win against GA the same way FL fans look at GA’s win against FL, a once in a life time event from a clearly inferior oponent. I hate to say it, but it’s people like you Bill King who make Coach Richt have to be so concerned with saying anything. You were just looking for something to fill your blog and the only thing you could find was Richt talking about how tough the schedule is and then going off quotes from the Athens Banner Herald make it sound like he’s whining. You gotta know that newspaper quotes are hardly ever come out like they are supposed to. How many times in hearing Richt speak to the public have you heard him whine? Probably not many. He was just stating his opinion about how tough the schedule was going to be and that it wasn’t in the original plan to play this many tough non-conference opponents in a season. That article also made it sound like Damon Evans was not to happy with Richts opinion but I imagine that was some bull crap spin the ABH was trying to put on it. I’m sorry for being a jerk, I know you want to have a blog that creates interesting discussion about the Dawgs, but please be careful to take into account the source and the person you’re talking about before you start a discussion about it especially when you are presenting you own opinion about the story which you obviously were in the this instance.

That was hilarious about having to write in Chinese for us Tech fans to understand. Really. And by the way, Tech was one win away from a sweep of UGA in all the major men’s sports this year. So if we haven’t proved we deserve coverage, then Georgia surely hasn’t either.
And to all of you other morons complaining about the Tech bloggers talking smack, please try reading the posts before commenting.(that is, if you can read) Its clear that the majority of the “Tech bloggers” were in fact UGA fans who were clearly being sarcastic.
I’m not sure why any of you actually read Bill King anyway. This article proves he doesn’t have a whole lot of interesting things to share.

You must not be including basketball as a men’s sport since Tech holds a 101-84 advantage. Even though both programs have gone downhill the last several years, its clear Tech is the better program. Baseball is 195 to 148 in favor of UGA overall, but I think Tech holds the edge over the last 10 years or so.. UGA does get some extra points for beating us more often when it counts, though, in the postseason. BUT I think the word “dominance” might be a little strong and/or ignorant when used in regards to either hoops or baseball..
As for football, I think it is 59-39 in favor of UGA. And in recent history I think UGA did a great job of dominating against Chan Gailey’s jackets. The main point here, since you asked, is that there is a new sheriff in town named Paul Johnson. And as for UGA, it seems like groundhog day every year talking about how good they are going to be. Its funny how Tech is not relevant as a rival to UGA but somehow Florida is. Keep drinking the koolaid, though.

Tech holds the edge over UGA in baseball over the last 10 years? UGA has 3 CWS appearances over that time and has knocked Tech out of the postseason in 2 of those years in Super Regionals. “dominance” is not ignorant. You were the one to bring up the “one win from a sweep” crap. Also, throw in tennis and golf. UGA and Tech are tied 5-5 in b-ball over the last 10 years also (that is suppossed to be your saving grace). It wasn’t just Gailey’s jackets we have been dominating over the last 40 years either. THAT is an ignorant statement.

Sorry for the late post – been in meetings all day.
A couple of things to take from this:
1. Alabama self reported, investigated – and suspended students/athletes involved from playing time last year.
2. No coaches or staff were involved.
3. Does anybody need an Economics or Marketing book – I have several I can sell you real cheap!!!
Seriously – glad this embarrassment has come to a head so we can put it behind us. Every school has some bad history – or embarrassing moments when our young people do stupid things …. like selling championship rings on the internet.
Also – this was not cheating – doing something purposeful to gain an advantage – it was young adults acting like fools taking advantage of a benefit.
Never said we were perfect, However:
– I am very proud our winning past and tradition of being one of the Elites in college football.
– Very disappointed and embarrassed by the lack of instituional control and the cheating ways of Coach DuBose. WE DESERVED OUR PUNISHMENT AND RESULTS.
– Also disappointed that so many athletes took advantage of the text book situation – knowing that BAMA had been through a recent rough time due to DuBose and much desrved probation.
– Very proud to get this chapter behind us – and very proud how quickly BAMA has risen back up to compete with the Elites – unless it’s UTAH!!!

Saint, people wouldn’t think you’re such a mentally lacking turd if you could keep your dad out your panties. Just tell him no and mean it. You’ d have a new outlook on life be happier and move to a state that allows gay marriages. You go girl.

Tech beat us fair and square! No excuses. They were the better team.

Murfdawg, I am not sure if anyone answered your first question but Joey Lewis is a sophomore and is not old enough to be drafted until after next season.

Don’t make excuses Elephant fans. Just take your medicine and deal with it. Rebel is right, cmr will take it all his frustration out on tech this year. Love the cracker box stadium comment. You see, tech doesn’t have that many football fans so they don’t need a big stadium. ACC is a basketball conference. Last time they were IN the title game? Ever won a bcs game? When FSU is down no one cares about the all carolina conference.

Don’t be a Hater
UGA is not inferior to Florida in talent one iota, they just need to play better in that game. Period. Would Florida have still won last year? Probably. But if you take away 2INT’s, 1 fumble, onside kick, and two missed field goals, that game is a LOT closer. Not making excuses, but just pointing out facts. Tech beat UGA this year because they made fewer mistakes. Victory favors the team that makes the fewest mistakes.

Tech netted a 3 point win, Alabama netted a 11 point win & Florida netted a 39 point win. All three win’s were a vengeance, for Alabama the dramatic loss in Tuscaloosa, for Florida the dancing on the field and for Tech is was Paul Johnson’s only season goal. If you look at the previous season vs last season statistics, net penalties and turnovers it is a telling sign.
Don’t worry dawg fans…last season was the best thing that could have happened. I am sure the coaching staff learned a lot. All the naysayers love to rub it in.
This is how a true class dawg fan does things: Congrats to Florida a remarkable achievement. Hope you have continued great success that UGA can duplicate. I am sorry to hear that Alabama has their records stripped. Congrats to Tech, I can only imagine how the seniors felt leaving on a high note.
Good health and best of luck to every one’s teams.
