Mark Richt has made it clear that he expects Joe Cox to be throwing the ball for the Dogs this season, but the outlook at receiver, with MoMass gone and Kris Durham hurt, is a lot murkier. The Dogs are thin in the receiving corps and last year’s breakout star, A.J. Green, is going to see a lot of double coverage. Who can take the pressure off him?
Michael Moore looked great in the bowl game, but can he do it consistently? It’s likely that at least one, if not more, of the incoming freshmen is going to have to come up big for Georgia’s passing game to take off.
A lot of preseason anticipation is building up around Marlon Brown, who seems capable of an A.J.-like debut. But can lightning like that strike two seasons in a row? And highly touted tight end Orson Charles, a high school teammate of QB Aaron Murray, is expected to be more of a receiver than a blocker. Is he the answer?
I have a sneaking suspicion the key to great things out of the receiving corps could be Georgia’s plan to use talented cornerback Branden Smith as a Champ Bailey-style two-way player.
Richt summed up the situation in an interview with Matt Hayes of the Sporting News:
“Of course we’re really comfortable with A.J., and we feel like Michael Moore is going to do an outstanding job. The rest of the guys have got some things to prove, and there aren’t many left. We’ve got Tavarres King and Israel Troupe and two true freshmen [Marlon Brown and Rantavious Wooten]. Orson Charles is more of a hybrid TE/WR, but he has great receiving skills. We also might use Branden Smith, a corner who is also a kick and punt returner, and a guy we think we can incorporate into the offense.”
So who do you see becoming Georgia’s next great receiver?
Meanwhile, the Birmingham News takes a look at the proliferation of “secondary violations” of NCAA rules and the perception that many coaches think they’re worth incurring.
At least one football-related secondary violation gets reported to the SEC every week. UGA’s most recent ones were pretty trifling inadvertent stuff, but with Lane Kiffin throwing around secondary violations like confetti and Auburn apparently crossing the line as its Big Cat recruiting tactics get more gonzo, the question arises: Should the NCAA crack down on these “isolated” violations that “provide only a minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantage”?
And what constitutes too many secondary violations? The News couldn’t get a clear answer from the SEC or the NCAA. Somewhere down the road, though, this situation is going to have to be resolved.

Bear who? Never heard of her?
Bear Bryant. You know. The legendary Alabama coach who dominated the sec and national landscape. The guy who was so famous that he had a big, ferocious critter named after him. I’ve often wondered ” What did they call those big, furry critters before they were named after Bear Bryant?”

I find it funny that Winningest calls Dorsey “juvenile”. I believe that coming on another teams blog site and whining about how great your program is and how we aren’t giving you guys enough respect for the last 100 years and talking about how much our team sucks for not having won a NC and how Utah is a great team and EVERYONE should know about the Ute indian tribe (i did, but you probably learned that while watching them beat y’alls tail last year) is VERY juvenile. He was making a joke that all of the UGA fans (you know, the ones who belong on this blog) found amusing. Go back to your Bama blog and stop acting like a bumbling fool.

What’s the matter? You like it when Dorsey talks smack about Bama but you can’t handle it when a Bama fan puts him in his rightful place. Is that it?
Seems like dawg fans always want to start talking some smack about someone else’s program and then get all bent out of shape when someone responds in kind. How weak and pathetic. I guess you just can’t handle that can you? I’m just curious as to why you think you can just throw mud at your elders and not expect your superiors to put you over our knees and spank you.

My superiors? that’s funny kid. haha. I actually never talked any smack about your program. If Dorsey wants to talk smack on a UGA blog about another team then yes, I don’t mind him doing that. For a Bama fan to be immature enough to be on a UGA blog looking to talk smack about UGA and talk about Bama football which has no bearing on the topic of this blog I do have a problem with that. I also don’t recall Dorsey saying anything negative about Bama, just accurately (as you have proved) saying the same old things we have to hear from Bama fans on A UGA BLOG constantly. We don’t care about Bama. If we did, we would be on their blog reading and discussing them. We don’t. We are obviously UGA fans on this blog. You can write a book on the history of Bama football and after reading it we will all still be UGA fans and have no more love for Bama than we did before. You are wasting yours and our time.

You are taking this way too seriously. Personally, I don’t even dislike Georgia. They’re not even a rival of Bama’s. Our real rivals are Auburn and UT.
This is all just fun smack talking, most of it was actually being done by Dawg fans directed at Bama. Just as they can give it they should be able to expect it in kind. I still don’t understand why you find it ok for multiple UGA fans to talk smack about Bama and then you get upset when a Bama fan responds. It doesn’t matter if its a Georgia blog. People look at each other’s blogs just to see what’s going on in the college football world.

Winningest Team:
Since you love stats so much and seem to think Bear’s Boys are ready to compete with the Big Boys of the SEC lets take a quick look at Bama’s performance against the legitimate teams of the SEC this Century:
vs UF: 1 win, 2 losses
vs UGA: 1 win, 3 losses
vs. UT: 4 wins, 5 losses
vs. Auburn: 2 wins, 7 losses
vs. LSU: 2 wins, 7 losses
Those look more like Vandy or Ole Miss numbers than the Greatest Team to Ever Walk the Earth. I sure hope those recruiting classes pan out for you and Satan decides to stick around T-Town for more than three years.

Barring a serious injury to Cox or Gray, Murray will redshirt…as he should. What if CMR gets the #1 QB in the country to sign next year, or the year after, or the year after…Should we expect every top QB recruit to come in and start right away? Get real people. Stafford did, but it’s very rare…as was Stafford…hence the $40+ million guaranteed. There is nothing freakish about Murray like there was/is with Stafford. He’s just another highly touted HS QB, ala Joe Cox and Logan Gray. So, wear your redshirt and wait your turn. For all we know, Mettenberger surpasses Murray over the next year or two. We already know he can sling the rock. What happens when he combines his superior arm with a couple years of tutelage under CMR and Bobo? Perhaps, he becomes a better option at QB than Murray. Something to think about…….

Winningest, I hear you. You definitely have stirred up the masses today. I’m glad you take it in stride. As you can see we UGA fans can take things personal. To me it’s very cool to have such loyalty to a team unlike some other programs that have a hard time filling up their stadium. I just don’t see the Tide doing what they did last year. Maybe I’m wrong but Ole Miss and LSU look very strong. In 2 years watch out for Miss. State with that coach they have out there. Good to see the West do what they have been doing.

Winningest Team: To build on AL Irrelevant’s history lesson (and just sticking to this century), AL has lost to the following: Northern Illinois, Miss. St. (twice), Arkansas (thrice), LA-Monroe, Minnesota, Hawaii, Southern Miss, and Central Florida (homecoming). And I can’t resist the losses in ‘97 and ‘99 to LA Tech (one at homecoming). It is safe to say that no relevant SEC team has that kind of losing record this century, particularly to the OOC lineup that has smacked UA. One good season this century. And don’t hang your hat on Utah being the only undefeated team and ranked #2. Please represent in the future.

You are dead on with the stats. Unfortunately, you are leaving out one very inconvenient fact. In the early 2000s Bama got hit in 2002-07 with the 2nd worst probation ever handed down. 5 years probation and 21 lost scholarships. Its hard to be competitive with 21 fewer schollies to hand out then anyone else. Didn’t you notice that Auburn and LSU’s rise in the west coincided directly with Bama’s downfall. Have you not likewise noticed that now that we are fully restocked that LSU and Auburn have been put right back in the closet by Bama?
What you are not looking at is when Bama is not on probation we are a dominant program and absolutely the dominant program in the west. We owned the west throughout the 90s and now that we have our schollies back its obvious in 1 season what we can do when we are at full strength. I’m sorry but its just a fact of life.
When Bama is at full strength we always have been and always will be a force to be reckoned with. If not for the probation of the 2000s its obvious that we would have been just as dominant as we were in the 90s. I think that is what really bothers people is that throughout our history we’ve always been consistently good and the 2000s is an aberration due to the probation penalties.
Now that we are back at full strength people saw last year what we can do and quite frankly it scares the hell out of people. I can understand the fear. So you can go ahead and pick out the worst period in Bama history when we were playing with half a deck if it makes you feel better. I got news for you though. We aint playing with half a deck anymore.
Oh, and if you want to start spouting all kinds of nonsense about bama always cheating and probation and all that let me remind you. Bama has had 2 major infractions cases brought against it in its history. Georgia and Auburn are tied with several other schools for the most major infractions cases brought against them by the NCAA with 6 cases each. Just another FACT in case you want to start talking more smack about Bama cheating, etc.

Too easy,
Let me help you out again. Of all those losses you mention most of them were to teams that went to bowl games, Ark. was a very consistent bowl team during most of the Nutt era, Miss. State went 8-5 and bowling when they beat us, Minnesota, Hawaii, Southern Miss were all bowl teams when they beat us and if Northern Illinois didn’t go bowling they should have because I believe they won 10 games the year they beat us. LA Tech beat us once and they won 9 or 10 games that year. Their only other 2 losses were to Nebraska when they were still a good program and USC. These were all either bowl teams or teams that won 9 or 10 games and that beat Bama teams playing with half a deck. You should have looked up the records of these teams before pretending to know something. The only 2 truly embarrassing losses were to La Monroe no excuse and a UCF team that if I remember correctly won 7 or 8 games.
Speaking of UCF I don’t know why you brought that up after the way UGA cheated their way to a bogus win over them a few years ago. That was the game with the biggest BS offensive pass interference penalty in the history of football. UCF was in chip shot field goal range and that bogus penalty where the receiver was 3 yards out of bounds and was diving for a pass was called for pass interference. How much did you pay the refs for that one? That infamous play was all over ESPN. How ironic that you would bring UCF up? Funny but after they got cheated out of a certain win you guys never invited them back again to play. Kinda like after Southern Miss whooped you. You said no, sir . I don’t want any more of that.

J Smurf,
Sorry dude but I deal in facts. Bama is a dominant program when not in probation. Look at the 90s and 70 wins in 7 years under Stallings when they played 11 regular season games and not 12. Also, we won the division in 2002 and won 10 games but didn’t play in the title game due to probation. But I guess you forgot about that season also. You just aint too bright are ya? I guarantee we won’t go 20 years in between conference titles. What in the world is the reason that you couldn’t win a conference title in 20 freaking years. I patiently await your answer.

Bama had a letdown against Utah because of the extreme disappointment of being less than 15 minutes of football away from playing for yet another national championship. Since you guys never seem to be in that kind of position its not the type of letdown that you can readily understand. But I don’t want to take away from Utah, they did in fact finish #2, wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of UGA, and as far as I can recollect they were the nation’s only unbeaten team. I can’t understand why you guys try to put down Utah. They beat us fair and square in the southeast, something you didn’t do in your own backyard. So why do you put them down so much? I suspect that since UGA has had so little exposure to football outside of the immediate southeast that you’re largely ignorant of the fact that football is played in other areas of the country.

Winningest:
So what you are saying is that when Alabama cheats at football, they are really good?
And I imagine there are quite a few LSU and Auburn fans who disagree with your notion that Alabama will never lose another game in the SEC west.
Prediction for UA’s 2009 Season: 9-3 regular season (losses to Virginia Tech Ole Miss, and LSU). Luckily for you guys, your lucky that your schedule doesn’t include Florida or Georgia unless you somehow miraculously make it to the Dome where you can take your second consecutive SEC Championship beat down. Your days of only winning 6 or 7 games are probably over (until you get caught cheating again), but your days of going 12-2 will be short-lived as well.
