Mark Richt has made it clear that he expects Joe Cox to be throwing the ball for the Dogs this season, but the outlook at receiver, with MoMass gone and Kris Durham hurt, is a lot murkier. The Dogs are thin in the receiving corps and last year’s breakout star, A.J. Green, is going to see a lot of double coverage. Who can take the pressure off him?
Michael Moore looked great in the bowl game, but can he do it consistently? It’s likely that at least one, if not more, of the incoming freshmen is going to have to come up big for Georgia’s passing game to take off.
A lot of preseason anticipation is building up around Marlon Brown, who seems capable of an A.J.-like debut. But can lightning like that strike two seasons in a row? And highly touted tight end Orson Charles, a high school teammate of QB Aaron Murray, is expected to be more of a receiver than a blocker. Is he the answer?
I have a sneaking suspicion the key to great things out of the receiving corps could be Georgia’s plan to use talented cornerback Branden Smith as a Champ Bailey-style two-way player.
Richt summed up the situation in an interview with Matt Hayes of the Sporting News:
“Of course we’re really comfortable with A.J., and we feel like Michael Moore is going to do an outstanding job. The rest of the guys have got some things to prove, and there aren’t many left. We’ve got Tavarres King and Israel Troupe and two true freshmen [Marlon Brown and Rantavious Wooten]. Orson Charles is more of a hybrid TE/WR, but he has great receiving skills. We also might use Branden Smith, a corner who is also a kick and punt returner, and a guy we think we can incorporate into the offense.”
So who do you see becoming Georgia’s next great receiver?
Meanwhile, the Birmingham News takes a look at the proliferation of “secondary violations” of NCAA rules and the perception that many coaches think they’re worth incurring.
At least one football-related secondary violation gets reported to the SEC every week. UGA’s most recent ones were pretty trifling inadvertent stuff, but with Lane Kiffin throwing around secondary violations like confetti and Auburn apparently crossing the line as its Big Cat recruiting tactics get more gonzo, the question arises: Should the NCAA crack down on these “isolated” violations that “provide only a minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantage”?
And what constitutes too many secondary violations? The News couldn’t get a clear answer from the SEC or the NCAA. Somewhere down the road, though, this situation is going to have to be resolved.

Bruffdawg,
Once again let me help you out there sir. In 2005 we spent most of the season ranked in the top 5 and several weeks ranked 3rd in the country behind Texas and USC. We didn’t lose until a doublet OT loss in the 10th game to an LSU team that won 11 games that year. If you’re going to say we haven’t been relevant at all then at least learn some facts so you won’t look so idiotic. Also we were in the top 5 in 1999 and began the 2000 season ranked 3rd in the nation. But just like last year’s UGA team we dropped and it turned out it was just a mirage. I guess you never let the FACTS get in the way of your argument do ya?

Yeah, we lost to LA-MONROE. Is that the best you got? I seem to remember you guys losing to Vandy and UK in the same freaking year. How do you do that? How do you lose to 2 pathetic teams like that in 1 year? I also seem to remember Southern Miss coming into your house one year and laying the wood on that Georgia Azz. Funny but you guys never scheduled them again after that. Had enough of that did ya?

No I don’t jest Winningest. You think LSU is not going to better than last year? I would have to disagree. And the Ole Miss team going to surprise alot of people. You guys lost your starting QB, best OL. Late in the season last year you could start seeing the “chinks in the armor”. But if you want to go ahead and think Alabamie is the king of coll fb EVERY JUNE, go right ahead. But really, outside the state of Alabama, nobody really gives a rat’s azz about the Tide, the Bear,Stallings, Namath, or Stabler or those stupid looking hats those chix wear to the games.

But I assume all the UGA qbs who won super bowls are legends in the cities they played pro ball in right? Wait a minute? Hmmmmmm!!!! Seems jawja doesn’t have any qbs that won a super bowl. When you get there please pick up all those mangled, twisted, broken, lifeless bodies that we left rotting there on the Sanford Stadium turf on blackout night. I understand that you went out and recruited some frat boys to play defense after the blackout beatdown. That would explain the 45 that Tech rung up on ya and the 49 that the gators decked you with. Go pick up the frat boys bodies that substituted for the defense that we broke in half. I guess Tech and the gators left their bodies in their wake also.

While you’re at it I’m sure you will have some sort of comment about losing to Utah. Doesn’t bother me. They are a fine football team and were the nation’s only undefeated team and finished no.2. Let me educate you further. I like the Mountain West and if the big east is a bcs conference then why shouldn’t the Mountain west be one as well. The pac 10 went 5-0 in bowls this year. The Mountain west has gone something like 5-0 5-1 the last 2 years against the PAC 10. Give them their due respect. Also, you can rag me about losing by 14 and 11 to the number 1 and no. 2 teams that went collectively 26-1. It aint gonna bother me none if that’s all ya got. Heck, at least we were leading UF in the 4th qtr while you guys endured yet another humiliating blowout defeat to them. Don’t you guys ever get tired of that?

J Smurf,
I’m glad that you agree that winning 12 games in a season is pretty good. But are you ignoring FACTS in your argument. As I said the MW has a stellar record against the bcs pac 10 with something like 10 or 11 wins against 1 loss in the last 2 years. This is called a FACT. The Sun Belt does not. The MW also now has won a couple of bcs bowl games and has not just Utah but TCU is also a regular fixture in the top 15. Never seen a Sun Belt team in the top 15. Seems you still need some help on what FACTS are.

Your argument lost merit when you told me how well the MW did against the PAC 10, another below average conference. Just because you got worked by a team from the MW, doesn’t mean you have to defend them.

Michael Moore will have a great season, I think, and TK and Izzy will contribute. As far as the frosh WRs are concerned, mark my words that the biggest impact THIS season will be from Rontavious Wooten. While he doesn’t have completely out of your mind top-end speed, he accelerates like few can and has more “wiggle” than Damien Gary.
If we get Woot the ball in open space it’s going to be sick.

Winningest team of the last 100 years:
University of Alabama Football this Century: 0 National Championships, 0 SEC Championships, and only one appearance in the SEC Championship Game. Even Arkansas has been to two SEC championships this century.
University of Georgia this Century: 0 National Championships, 2 SEC Championships, and 3 appearances in the SEC Championship Game.
Now who is the more relevant program right now?
You really sound like a hybrid mix of a Notre Dame fan still living in the past and a nerd from the North Avenue Trade School who believes that because his team had one good season, he is on top of the world. (Alabama had a mediocre schedule last year which included terrible Auburn, LSU, and UGA teams. You played two quality opponents last year (UF and Utah) and you lost to both of them!

Thanks for getting me back on track Ben, but take it easy. DG is the original Juke…or Dook Artist…err Dook Genius…err Count Dookula. Really, take your pick. Nobody in a Georgia uniform has ever hit L1/R1 (pressure sensitive) like DG. Wooten hasn’t even showed up yet. MM is a slot receiver, but a really good one. He’ll rarely be left alone. 2 receiver sets will be A.J. and TK. TK will be our 2nd best…mark my words. Had he stayed healthy last year, MoMass wouldn’t have approached 1000 yds like he did.

Phil Steele says UGA has 14 all SEC players this year. His rankings go to 4th string. He also predicts 10-11 wins for UGA.So it seems that some people have a little faith in CMR and the coaching staff.Smith is badly needed at CB so I don’t know how much KR/PR/WR we will see him play..we have other players who can fill those spots.Brown looks like a stud to me..I know the level of competition argument is out there but have you guys seen his film?He runs like a tailback,I know he may not be polished as AJ or maybe even Wooten as a WR but that kid is a player.I look forward to him gettting bigger and stronger and punishing DB’s in the SEC who have to try and tackle him one on one.Charles have been touted around a lot of sites since signing day as a guy who has more potential as a WR than a TE.6-3 235 4.5 40 sounds good to me at the slot matched up with a LB or nickel back.King and Troupe were both considered to be the top WR’s in the state when they came out so the talent is there. This looks to be the best set of talent at WR we have ever had under any coach.Lynch will be an important part of this team as well,he looks to be the only real TE we have. When you call a guy a hybrid WR/TE it usually means he is more of a WR that can play spot duty at TE.You know a 2 TE set of White and Charles with Green and Brown out wide has a wicked little ring to it don’t it?I see us as a much more physical team on offense this year and I for one can’t wait to see how the staff works these young men into various packages to exploit the mismatches they present.

puppydawg,
You never heard of Bear Bryant? You know, the legendary Alabama coach who won 6 ncs, 12 sec titles, etc. The guy was so famous that they named a big, ferocious critter after him. I always wondered “What did they call bears before they were named after Bear Bryant?”
Milburn, who cares what school you are a fan of with a ridiculous handle like yours. I’m certain your school doesn’t claim you.
JSmurf, You need to broaden your football horizons. We’re both SEC fans but unlike you I’m traveled enough to understand that college football is played in other places also. Just ask West Virginia or BC like Festsus said. They play football and apparently they showed you pretty well that they can play football. The problem with an UGA fan like yourself is that until the ASU game this year UGA had never in 50 years traveled outside the immediate southeast to play a big time opponent in a home and home. Aint ever happened. That’s why UGA was always known as an average middle tier regional team rather than a national brand name like Bama. Why do I say that? Because I grew up watching Bama travel throughout to play regular season games against the following; Penn state, Ohio State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Texas AM, Oklahoma, Washington when they were a national power under Don James, FSU, Boston College with Doug Flutie, etc. You get the picture. And who did UGA play home and home in the past 30 years. NOBODY YOU FREAKING SMALL TIMERS! UCLA came to Sanford in 1985 and when UGA was supposed to return the trip the next year the coward dawgs balked. That is why you guys are 2nd tier in the minds of football fans in other regions of the country. You’ve always been too cowardly to go out and get national exposure to play big time opponents during the regular season. The FACTS back me up on this.

Winningest,
If you were confident you wouldn’t be defending Bama so much. True, that historically Bama is one of the best programs ever. Until they win a NC soon or even a conf championship then you can beat your chest.. I dont see any ND fans on here saying how great they are and talking about Knute Rockne and the four horseman. They know that they have one of the best programs ever historically but they also stay in the present moment. I dont need to pull out archives on the Dawgs or anyone. Let’s see what happens this season. Saban is a great coach but I do not see Bama winning the West this season. Now, if they don’t I’m sure you will be on here still talking about 101 years and Bear, etc…By the way this will be the only time I post. Not sure what you do for living but it appears you have a lot of time on your hands bro.
