Picking the All-Donnan/Richt team

To mark the Dawgs having won at least eight games a year since 1997, the nation’s longest such streak, Jeff Dantzler of Athens’ AM 960 the Ref and his afternoon co-host, Chris Brame, assembled their all-star team from those years under Jim Donnan and Mark Richt for Bulldawg Illustrated.

Their offense has D.J. Shockley at quarterback, with Robert Edwards and Knowshon Moreno as the running backs, Hines Ward and A.J. Green as the wide receivers, Leonard Pope at tight end, and Jon Stinchcomb, Matt Stinchcomb, Max Jean-Gilles, Nick Jones and Fernando Velasco on the line.

Their defense features David Pollack and Charles Grant at end, Richard Seymour and Johnathan Sullivan at tackle, Boss Bailey, Odell Thurman and Kendrell Bell at linebacker, Champ Bailey and Tim Jennings at the corners, and Sean Jones and Thomas Davis as the safeties.

Their placekicker is Brandon Coutu, the punter is Jonathan Kilgo, the kickoff receiver is Fred Gibson and their punt returner is Damien Gary.

That’s a pretty dynamite team, though I’d have to differ and put David Greene at quarterback, Gordon Ely-Kelso at punter and I’d add a fullback: Verron Haynes. Having to leave Musa Smith off is tough, but that just shows how rich the Dogs have been at tailback in the Donnan-Richt years.

So what do you think? Is there someone else who belongs on the list? Matthew Stafford? Billy Bennett? Tony Taylor? Greg Blue?

Elsewhere, Bleacher Report ranks the individual defensive and offensive units for 2009 (UGA’s offensive line is seen as third best) and puts them all together to come up with the Overall 11 Best 11s, with the Dogs tied for No. 9 with Notre Dame and West Virginia. Florida and USC are ranked as the top two, followed by LSU, Alabama, a tie between Virginia Tech and Texas, then Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, and the three-way tie featuring UGA.

Meanwhile, in its SEC preview, Bleacher Report sees the Dogs beating South Carolina, Arkansas, Arizona State, Tennessee, Vandy, Tennessee Tech, Auburn and Kentucky. It predicts no losses but sees the games against Okie State, LSU, Florida and Georgia Tech as toss-ups. That’s certainly more optimistic than some other recent predictions. Who says the 2008 Dogs aren’t getting any respect?

DJ over David Greene ???? No way college football’s all-time winningest QB isn’t the 1st Team QB. The rest of the team looks just about right.

With all of the talent Donnan had he should’ve a lot more games.

Quimpcy is on the local all-blotter team as QB….also as quarterback.

Neither D.J. Shockley nor David Greene can sniff Matthew Stafford’s jockstrap as a QB. Billy Bennett might edge out Kotu, or maybe not.

Greene at QB is a no-brainer and while Tim Jennings was indeed a baller, at his diminutive size, it’s hard to believe we can’t do better at corner. Jamie Henderson for one or what about Paul Oliver? He did own Calvin Johnson.

I agree with simple Dawg at teh qb spot, no way you can leave off David Greene. (aka the “Silent Assasin” as I like to refer to him as) Also can Marcus Stroud not get any love here, hell he should make the team just for his SI cover. And I think Jermaine Phillips got the shaft here too, he played for both coaches and started that long line of hard hittin sfties that followed: Thomas Davis, Sean Jones, and Greg Blue, who’s middle shoulda been Black &! And I think I’d like Billy Bennett to kick, that guy was crazy. Oh, and I think Asher Allen might have been the mst physical and nosey corner I have ever seen. That’s all I have to say about that.

O and if we’re talkin line backers I gotta give a shoutout to Adrian Hollingshed. Just for his clutch performance against LSU in 98 I think was, and on 2nd thought, Stafford’s the best qb to come Sanford Stadium. That howitzer, (hopefully I spelled that right), he carried around disguised as right arm solves that. Absolute cannon. And even tho Tony Taylor didn’t do much in the pros he was great at UGA, especially against tech. There are gonna be a bunch of past players that read this list and ask “WTF?”

I have to make two changes. Matt Stafford at QB and Marcus Stroud at DT. I know everyone and their brother loves D. Greene, but honestly, there is a reason he was never anything above a practice squad QB in the League and Staff was the #1 pick. You put that team together and give Stafford and Greene that OL and weapons and Stafford shows you why he was picked when he was picked.

I love Greeny as much as the next guy, but I’m also a realist. With that team, Stafford trows for 4,000 yds and 30 TDs. Green throws for 2800 – 3200 with 20 TDs. Just being real…

With that line and those receivers I want Stafford at QB. Given a better line, I think Stafford would have been every bit as good as David Greene and he is my very close second. Greene could march down the field but for big back-breaking plays I like Stafford…even if a few more of those back breakers are coming back the other way!

I don’t know how you leave Blue out either. MoMass…and T. Edwards (as a freshman anyway) have to be at least mentioned at WR. Leave Ward off the list at WR…he was more of an all around stud rather than a true receiver in his time at UGA.

Come to think of it it seems like the list makers weighted what they have done since leaving Athens just as heavily as their play there.

I know he had a less than stellar senior year, but what about Brannon Sutherland at Fullback? He did it all and extremely well. The QB question I would have to answer with Greene having a razor thin edge over Stafford. Billie Bennett has to make the list. Couto was an incredible kicker, but it is all relative. If Bennett was not as solid as he was, we probably wouldn’t have won as many we did during those years. Remember…we could get down to the red zone like it was no one’s business, but always had to convert for the field goals.

As good as Stafford was at UGA, there was a reason Greene became the winningest QB in NCAA history…he was an extremely smart QB. Obviously he doesn’t have the physical tools Stafford has. He knew when to make the throw, and when to eat it and live for the next play. Stafford tried to use his arm too much, IMO, and it got him and the offense off the field too many time without any points. Lest we forget, Greene is the one with the SEC championship.

Again, Richt has had his chances to win his BCS NC at uga, his time is over, better coaches at other teams along with them recruiting in our state, with players leaving early… And not to mention the passive defense we play will take a toll on the dawgs for years too come: Richts a great coach, but he does not have the IT Factor, the Urban Meyer Factor or the Les Miles Factor, or the Nick Saban Factor…. He is not mean enough to win big…. I have money ridding on it and I will win, just like I said Tom Glavine and Smoltz would never pitch for the braves again..

June 4th, 2009

“Stafford tried to use his arm too much”

Correction. Stafford HAD to use his arm too much. He did not have the support that Greene had. He never once had a dominant offensive line and last year he was crippled by an absolutely pathetic defense that let scores get way out of hand. Alot of Stafford’s interceptions were when the chips were down and he had to take risks to make something happen.

Count me in the camp that thinks Stafford would have been an unbelievable bada$$ had he played in the 2002-2005 time frame. Greene was good but how hard is it to play quarterback when your defense is only giving up 15 ppg like those defenses did back then? And back in those days, if we lost it was usually the offenses fault anyway.

Greene at QB- didn’t have the arm Stafford does or DJ’s Athleticism, but he was a very heady QB and was outstanding at reading defenses and checking out of a bad play into a good one.

Jermaine Phillips over S.Jones- He’s the one that started the hard hitting saftey tradition

Hines should be listed as best All purpose player, as for the WR position I’d replace him with Terrance Edwards – it’s unfortunate that all many remember him for is the dropped pass in the 02 Ga/Fl game. AJ is going to re-write the receiving record book at UGA

You can definitely make a very strong case for Stroud and Geathers at DT

Hard to leave Wil Witherspoon, Tony Taylor, and Tony Gilbert off the LB list, but equally hard to argue with the 3 chosen.

Another note on the QB position, having the skills to be a good PRO QB doesn’t guarntee sucess at the college level and vice versa. Tom Brady is a great pro QB but had a mediorcre college career, Matt Cassel didn’t even see the field much in college and will be an NFL starter this year. While Stafford had a much better arm than David Greene he did not have his ability to read coverages. Don’t forget Greene’s o-line in 2003 wasn’t the greatest after losing the senior filled line of ‘02

MikeGA1978

June 4th, 2009
3:52 pm

“huh?” I would leave 2003 off that list. The O-line was far from a strength that year when they yielded 47 sacks. The running game was subpar too. The defense and Greene’s smart play carried UGA to 11 wins that year. A game I hope to never forget was the 2004 game with LSU, 45-16. After losing the heartbreaker in Baton Rouge and being embarrassed in the SEC Champ Game, I think the fans might have wanted that win more than the team ha. That game was loud.

Move Hines to punt and kickoff returns and wherever else he wants to play. Put in MoMass. Gotta go with Big Ben Watson as TE. I want Moses as a DE. I was always a DJ fan, no argument there. Hayes may wear hobnail boots but Sutherland would get that ball in the end zone when it was on the line. I can still hear the echos of Davis’s hits. And how can we not let Pollack skip to the sidelines.

Stafford had more pics and a lower completion percentage than Green or DJ. The defense didn’t ahve the pressure on them to keep the other team under 35.

Greene had 28 INTs in his first 3 years
Stafford had 33 pics.

Green only tossed for 4 INTs in his Sr. year for a total of 32. Staffords tossed more INTs in 3 years than Greene did in 4. IMO that saves the defense a TD or 2.

I’d put Greene at QB. Although I’m tempted to change AJ Green to Massaquoi, Reggie Brown or Terence I can’t b/c even though Green is still a freshman, he has better hands than all of those guys.

I’d put McMichael over Pope. I don’t have any issue with OLine. Those Stinchcomb brothers were very good

By a very close margin, Kicker would be Bennett over Coutu. At DT, I’d pick Marcus Stroud over Seymour. I have no issues with Sullivan b/c he was an absolute beast! The reason why he didn’t succeed in the NFL is he’s extremely lazy. He didn’t have Garner with him in the league plus he had millions of dollars in his pockets at that point.

At LB, I’m putting Witherspoon or tony Taylor in for Boss. Boss was a freakish athlete, evidenced by the fact that I used to always look forward to field goal attempts by the other teams to see if he’d block it, but ‘Spoon and Taylor were better all around linebackers.

At DB, I like Jennings but I’d go with Paul Oliver, but just by a slim margin. In my opinion, after Pollack and Odell, the best all around defensive player we had in the Richt era is Sean Jones. So I have no issues with this pick. The one I have the most with is Blue. He could hit but was a liability in coverage. I would have picked Jermain Phillips over him.

At QB I think it comes down to Greene and Stafford, even though I really enjoyed watching DJ in 2005. I think it goes without saying that Stafford was the better athlete and Greene was the better decision maker. To me it comes down to signature wins/losses.

Singnature wins:
Greene: beat a very talented Tennessee team in 2001 in Knoxville, a very good Alabama team in Tuscaloosa in 2002, beat a9-4 Auburn team in 2002 to clinch a trip to the SEC Championship,a 10-3 Tennessee team 41-14 in Knoxville in 2003 and beat a very good LSU team in Athens in 2004.

Stafford: beat an 11-2 Auburn team and had a come from behind win over a Tech team that went to the ACC championship in 2006, a 9-3 Florida team a blowout win over a 9-4 Auburn team in 2007

Signature losses:
Greene: lost to a 10-2 Florida team in 2001, lost to National Champ LSU twice in 2003, lost to 14-0 Auburn and 10-3 Tennessee in 2004

Stafford: lost to National Champ Florida in and 8-4 Kentucky in 2006, lost to Tennessee in Knoxville in 2007, and lost to 12-0 Alabama, 9-4 GA. Tech, and National Champ Florida in 2008.

As far as signature losses go, it still a tossup between the two. But as far a signature wins go, I’m giving the edge to Greene. His signature wins in 2002 lead his team to a championship, and that win in Knoxville is what put Richt’s program on the map. Stafford’s performance’s versus Auburn and Florida in 2007 were impressive. But when the team absolutely needed him to come through for them in a big game, Stafford was either phenomenal( 45-20 over Auburn and 42-30 over Florida) or horrendous( 41-30 to Alabama and 49-10 to Florida).

So I give the nod to Greene 55% to Stafford 45%

Def. DJ #1qb!! We would have won a Natty if we had started him the whole time or if he didnt get injured for Fla. Game!! And I love David Green, and I’m related to him. Just being honest

Thomas Davis was linebacker in safety clothing. Don’t the dogs have any other stand out players at safety.

Greene had more game, but Uga All Stars would still get spanked by the Gators AllStars from 1997-2008!
