More on Cox: He hates losing

While we’re talking about Joe Cox, I like this quote from a Rivals/Yahoo profile of him that again refers to the weird mindset of last year’s team.

“I hate losing more than I like winning,” Cox says. “I think that’s the attitude you have to have in football, and it definitely is the attitude you have to have in this conference. It’s really weird when I see guys – when we do happen to lose a game – and it doesn’t really hit them that they’ve lost, it doesn’t seem like it really affects them as much as it would affect me. Hopefully with the guys we have in our leadership positions this year, we aren’t going to let that happen.”

Unlike the guys we had in leadership positions last year, apparently.

Meanwhile, another former UGA star has been back on campus finishing up his degree. DawgPost reports Damien Wilkins just finished up his last class in a political science course six years after leaving for the NBA. “This is very important to me,” Wilkins says. Although you might think a millionaire might not worry about whether he got his diploma or not, Wilkins says, “I can’t stand not to finish what I have started. Also, that degree is something that can’t be taken away from me. I want it to show my kids. I also want to do some things after basketball. That ball won’t bounce forever, you know.”

Smart man.

Several posters have mentioned the ingredient IMO that was missing most last year. A leader with “heart”. Cox has that intangible, however he can’t do it by himself. He has some playmakers surrounding him that should come through. My hope is that we don’t rely on the big strike capability offensively, however knowing that’s Mark Richts forte, and if we do I think it could and probably will adversely affect us. We need to be more of a ball control team, again IMO, than we were last year. The lack of ball control and a couple of mistakes put us out of the game against UF and Bama. Monday morning quarterbacking showed me a couple of different, more conservative offensive calls early in those two games and the results could have been different.

Seems like most of the focus has been on the offensive side of the ball, let us not forget where we lost our ball games last year. Defensively we have to step up, give Cox a little time to get comfortable, hopefully some of the injured players returning will provide the leadership we need on the field.

Here’s to burying last years memories and starting fresh. Good luck to Richt, Staff, and Team.

Good points Mobile Dawg. I believe the offense can carry its share of the load with the OL returning and getting our road grader back at LT. That boy is gonna be special. Just ask Bama about losing the left tackle and see the difference it made. We had to play the entire year without ours.

I think the defense is gonna have some chips on the ‘ol shoulders and lay some poundings on folks. Jeff Owens clogging things up will help more than folks realize.

This is true. I remember the look on David Pollack’s face right after we lost to Tennessee in 2004. I thought he was going to kill someone (the offense would have been a deserving target). NOT a happy guy. I’m not a big believer in all this “leadership” and “heart” pyschobabble, but it sure would be nice to see that kind of attitude again.

I believe in the leadership and heart psychobabble. But I also believe in hope, change and audacity. I hope we win the UGA-FLA game. Shutting down an opponent by the defense will be a big change. Someone asked me what was on the side of the Tennessee helmets, audacity.

Georgias problems last year had very little to do with a few unlucky breaks.

It’s not a few mistakes when Florida and Alabama Tech tackle Georgia players and bring them down while Georgia defenders allow the other team to bounce off and run for large gains and touchdowns.

Those are defensive lapses and are the prime responsibility of the Defensive Coordinator (WILLIE MARTINEZ) who somehow hasn’t instilled in the Dawgs that under no circumstances are you to tackle with your hands as opposed to running through the opponent and wrapping up.

A lack of Focus and Discipline are two things the Dawgs didn’t have and is the reason they got their butts handed to them by both the Gators and Tide in last years games…..

That’s the coaches fault. Period.

Joe Cox will not be the issue in the coming season. They have enough key people to get the job done for the most part even with his limited experience.

The problem is not being able to stop the other teams offense when needed and if the Defense plays anywhere near like they did last year … it will be a very long season.

Allow me to clarify. I believe that heart and leadership are requisite ingredients to a successful football team. I do not believe that a bunch of morons on the internet (myself included) talking about “heart” and “leadership” is anything more than inane pyschobabble. It ranks right up there with the mysterious “it factor”, the dumbest thing I have ever heard of in my entire life. What the hell is an “it factor?” No one ever even attempts to define it. I have the “it factor.” I said it therefore its true. Good day.

You always want to have kids that love to win, but hate to lose even more. Its called playing with heart and all good teams have heart. It takes talent to win a championship, but no talented team has ever won a championship on talent alone. With the talent UGA has, if we play with more heart we will win championships. As far as Wilkens coming back to get his degree, its always great to see anyone, no matter who it is, finish what they started. Congrats to him and all who “finish the drill”.

Vegas, you bring up some good points but I remember specific times/events in the Florida and Bama games where things started going the wrong way early and with last years team it seemed once adversity started, it became a landslide. I want to see how JC plays against OK ST before I start trotting out crystal ball predictions for his Fall performance. But in looking at the schedule today the games that concern me are LSU, FL, and AU. The good thing is that LSU is in Athens and may give us the edge we need. FL is, well, FL. AU is due and that’s why I’m concerned but if AU starts the season off on fire then my concern will ratchet up several more notches.

And my concern over these games has zero to do with the QB and everything to do with Martinez and his limp defensive schemes.

Are we scoring 30 on anybody? NO. When you are depending on Joe Cox and Caleb King to outscore your opponent, especially when your opponent is scoring 49, you’re in trouble. On the subject of “having a degree”. If I were to interview a high school grad for a job who had performed admirably, and a college grad who barely scraped by, which one would I select to fill a job that required good intelligence and a work ethic, not a particular specialty. That’s easy, the college grad has already demonstrated that he can’t cut it. To give him the job would be taking a change in light of his poor track record. So Mr. Wilkens, I hope you learned your lessons well, lest you get beat out by someone “less learned”.

Stewart, if you actually look at Mark Richt’s record at UGA you’ll notice that he’s never even come close to losing 6 games in a season. The only times he’s lost more than 3 games in a season was his FIRST year as a head coach at Georgia and Matt Stafford’s true freshman year. I don’t know where your idea of “bad coaching” came from, but if you see Mark Richt losing 6 games next year, you’re just delusional….or a Tech fan. I’m guessing the latter.

As far as this idea of “heart” and “leadership” is concerned, as much as I hate to say it, I would bet that Tim Tebow’s “heart” and “leadership” has something to do with Florida’s current success.

George P. Burdell: You need to work on your reading comprehension, because DawgGirl mentioned 2006, referring to it as “Stafford’s True Freshman year.” I checked, because I was all set to call her out on it, too.

To the other Tech fans on this board: What the hell? All you’re doing is inviting them to come back onto our blog and talk more crap. You’re perpetuating the cycle.

I have nothing really to say to any Georgia fans here, since I know you only bit back after some of the less intelligent Tech fans antagonized you. Dawgs have a very solid program, and their football team will be excellent again. I don’t quite buy the idea that they will not miss Stafford, BUT they will be more run oriented behind an excellent O Line and there are backs to carry the load at UGa, so Cox (like Buck Belue many years ago) will not have to do so much for this team to win.

I respect the Georgia program, and most actual UGa grads I have met are solid, but some of you Dawg fans are tooooo much! I have had UGa fans tailgate me and try to run me off the road because I had Tech stuff on my car. I have had drunk UGa fans be obnoxious in victory as well as in defeat, in the most insulting ways. We are going to give up 30 points or more at least 5 times this season. Florida is going to score at least 40 points on us. Our offense is not that good. Did anyone watch the spring game? No speed, no deep play threat, except for one receiver.
My reference to poor coaching stems from the fact that we have a poor defense. We have a poor defense because we have a poor coordinator. Our head coaches refusal to acknowledge that fact, makes him a liability. Florida is going to beat us 63-10. Can anyone deny that statement?

@ Stewart…

Yes, we can all easily deny that statement, considering lots of factors.

A) Richt and his staff have never given up that many points in a game.

B) We have the deepest and most talented LB corp and interior line in the SEC. People are GOING TO HAVE A VERY HARD TIME RUNNING ON US. If we can make any team’s game one dimensional, there’s no way people can run the score up that much. So you’re wrong again.

C) You cite the spring game and the lack of “speed”. You were apparently watching a different game, because the D looked dominant, in position, and nasty. Oh, and as far as deep threats are concerned, have you heard of this guy Marlon Brown? If not, maybe Rontavious Wooten?

D) “Our offense is not that good.” Well, you haven’t sen our offense play yet, have you? But the fact remains, we return the best receiver in the SEC, the entire offensive line, and we have a 5th year senior quarterbacking. Interesting… I’d like to see where you get these so-called “facts” from. Because I think I want some of what you’re smoking.

Listen, I’m not a dellusional dawg. We have a tough schedule and a bunch of challenges. But stating rediculous things like we’re going to get 30 points scored on us so many times is simply ignorant. Next time you make a prediction, try to base it off of some PRECEDENT. All you have right now is a finger pointed at Willie Martinez saying “The d got worse every year!”

Yeah, take a look at injuries and retruning starters throughout that period. Also the win/loss ratio. That means a lot less that you think.
