Dawgs to be September surprise?

In College Football News’ Roundtable for today, Pete Fiutak tackles the question of which program is getting no attention now but will by the end of September. Among the contenders, he says, is Georgia. Fiutak says he has “a gnawing feeling that Mark Richt has the type of team good enough to hold Oklahoma State in check in the season opener, beat South Carolina, Arkansas and Arizona State to be a strong 4-0 at the end of September and be ranked fifth in the nation going into the LSU showdown.”

What do you think? Pie in the sky or a realistic scenario?

Elsewhere, in the Birmingham News’ 63rd annual poll of SEC sports information directors (who couldn’t vote for their own team), Florida and Alabama are the picks to meet in Atlanta for the championship. Georgia is ranked fifth overall in the conference. Among the preseason All-SEC selections picked by the SIDs were receiver A.J. Green, who made the first team on offense, and safety Reshad Jones, a defensive first-teamer. Making the second team: linemen Clint Boling and Jeff Owens and linebacker Rennie Curran, who was voted outside linebacker in the poll’s “best of the best.” … Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald notes that the academics-related transfer of safety John Knox is the fourth loss of a member of the Dogs’ 2007 signing class, not including juco transfers Corvey Irvin and Jarius Wynn, who are now in the NFL. Others gone: receiver Walter Hill (dismissed), offensive lineman Scott Haverkamp (left the team after multiple rules violations) and offensive lineman Chris Little (transferred). Two other members of that class, Bruce Figgins and Justin Houston, are missing games due to suspension. … David Hale of the Bulldogs Blog asked Mark Richt whether Joe Cox will have the same sort of latitude as Matthew Stafford to change plays at the line of scrimmage. “He’ll have every bit as much responsibility as Matt did,” Richt said. “He understands it just as well as Matt did. He doesn’t have quite as much game experience doing it, but Joe has a ton of practice experience and he gets it. Right now, he’s working his tail off to learn as much offense and defense as he can, and we never worry about Joe’s prep.”

I won’t claim we will or won’t be good, but I don’t think I’ve ever entered a season with more questions needing to be answered.

* We lost about 90% of our scoring offense. Who will step up?

* We have 5 highly touted high school running backs on the team, yet we may not have 1 decent college running back.

* People refer to Joe Cox as another DJ. Joe may be good, but I just don’t see the comparison. DJ got much more relevant playing time and was just a phenomenal athlete and leader. Again, Joe may step up, but I didn’t see anything last year that would lead me to believe he could duplicate what DJ did.

* Our defense. Causes much lost sleep at night. I can only imagine what Richt must be thinking. I don’t think anyone (including willie) knows what Willie is thinking.

* Will we be crippled with injuries again this year?

* The schedule looks pretty tough. If I’m not mistaken, we are the only SEC team with 11 BCS eligible opponents.

Many, many questions, but I’m really looking forward to the season.

Checking off at the line wasn’t something unique to Stafford. Anybody who wants to play QB for Mark Richt will be able to do that.

Could Georgia go 4-0 through that September schedule? They certainly match up to each team on paper, but that’s a pretty tough gauntlet to run back to back to back to back.

So laughable! Of course the Mutts will be a September surprise to their own dilusional fans and ole Willie will be rubbibg that chrome dome of his raw. This team gets blown away by the true powers and traditions of the SEC. The mutts willl slip up and lose to the mickey mouse programs in the SEC or should I say wanna be’s in the likes of gamechickens, kentucky’s and vandy’s . The defensive slide after BVG continues and the vanilla offense of boo boo is just as woeful. Its gonna be quite disturbiing just as I pedicted about the basketball and baseball programs big flops. Gold fool,

That is why they play the games right? Even a gold fool can understand that. How about that baseball team last night? You nerds whacked on us for “underachieving” while you lost to USM AT HOME.

Football team at UGA will be just fine. Cox, Gray or Murray will do fine with the OL we have. The DL will be better as will the entire defense. Got a new kicker to kick it out of the back of the endzone.

I sense some serious chips on the shoulders of the players and the coaching staff who are tired of hearing how bad it’s going to be. I expect this team to be ranked higher at the end of the year than its preseason poll ranking.

The game that worries me the most is Arkansas early on. Oklahoma State will be tough but our defense is more solid. Arizona State shouldn’t be all that great and South Carolina lost a bunch of playmakers last year so I’m not as worried about them as I have been in the past. I think that Georgia is very capable of winning 10 games and a BCS game but we have got to stay healthy period. The TE position is now a question mark since Figgins was selfish enough to act stupid and get arrested penalizing himself and his teammates. We need Arthur Lynch to step up and play like a veteran to help Aron White. White is not an every down tight end. The Dawgs might not be ranked in the preseason top-5 but I guarantee you that nobody is looking forward to playing them. Still alot of talent and leadership. I feel we will truly see Coach Richt’s best coaching job in the fall. GO DAWGS!

Given last year’s defensive statistics, we will have to outscore a highly potent Ok State offense. Does the 2009 Dogs have enough offense to get in a shooting match?

With that first month, going into the LSU game with one loss would be a very successful month.

If they beat OK State, they could be 5-0 going into LSU; if they do not beat OK State, and, if they do not beat SC as well (there is precedent), then Richt better start thinking about new hires at the end of the season. Need we say for whom?

It’s amazing how missing 3 tackles vs. GT, which was the difference in a miracle win for GT, now equates to the Nerd Herd being the kings of football.

I think we have to be able to score points. How quickly we get the offense on track will be the key to September. Charles and Brown will have to make an impact like AJ did. Our running game will have to improve. I think Joe will be steady, but feel Murray will need to play early and often.

Ok. State is no joke and will be ready. I think it will be a tough September, but also one that is winnable if we score.

I don’t know why we can’t have a great season. You don’t always have to have the strongest arm to be a good college quarterback, as long as you know how to run the offense and can make throws. A great line and talented skill players will help Cox do that. Remember that David Green didn’t have Stafford’s arm either but ran that play action to perfection. I think we will have a solid team with only Alabama and Florida in better shape at the start of the season. With a few breaks like we had 2 years ago, who knows what could happen. Looking forward to Fools Gold eating his words. Go Dawgs!

Sam Robards, Dawg Fan

June 2nd, 2009
3:37 pm

I think that’s a VERY realistic scenario. Under Richt, the Dawgs have never lost an out-os-conference away game. We also seem to play better on the road (Jacksonville notwithstanding) than we do in Athens. AND we remember what happened last year.

I say we’ve got a huge chip on our shoulder, great talent, wonderful lines and vocal leadership in Joe Cox that was sorely missed during Stafford’s time (Cox can play pretty dang well, to boot). That, combined with all the experience we’ve got coming back from injuries, will come together in a convincing win over Okie State.

Once we do that, I think we steamroll until October.

Yeah, there are questions, but just because the fans don’t know the answers doesn’t mean that the team/coaches doesn’t know the answer. And the less people know, the harder it’ll be for other teams to prepare for us.

I can’t make a preseason prediction as to our postseason destination, but the sky’s the limit for this team. Go Dawgs!

The fact that we lost so many players, but held on to our entire staff speaks volumes about what our coaches think about our current talent. It is going to have to be a wait and see approach. I do think UGA will be 4-0 going into the LSU game. The question is, how will the Dawgs do against LSU, UT, UF, and GT from that point on. If they stay healthy on their lines, I think they can be good enough to split those games. If not, I think they could easily lose those games. Lets just play hard and enjoy the season. If Aaron Murray is not behind the center when the season starts I’m going to give Mark Richt an ear full. If Aaron Murray is the QB to open the season, we will go undefeated. If he doesn’t start we will lose 2 or 3 games.

I know you can’t compare games from one season to the next, but UGA played Oklahoma State in Athens in 2007 and defeated the highly-regarded Cowboys, 35-14. While the Dawgs will be making the trip out to Oklahoma, the D usually plays well with a few weeks to prepare for an offense and the offensive line should play well against the Cowboys defense.

This is a difficult schedule. Should be fun to watch the games!

Just take a look at their records vs each other for the last 5 years.

Pete Fuitak is late with his prediction, but I’ll give him credit for reading more than a couple of articles on the players. The first four games will be tough, and there is a good chance we are 4-0. UGA has the talent and ability to play with any school in the nation. Leadership on the field (especially on D) will be a huge key to UGA’s season. I look for UGA to suprise many people throughout the year. Games are won in the trenches and both O line and D line will be very good. Cox will be more like a David Greene QB than a Shockley QB. Murray may be the best talent on campus, but does he have the head for the game yet? Cox will prove to be more than capable and if not him then Grey will have his opportunity. Look for Mettenberger and Murray to be Redshirted if possible. RB is the biggest question mark on the team. The D line will be bolstered by tons of Sr leadership and inside pressure will allow the DE to be more productive than last year.

I for one am glad we(UGA) can argue about who is the best QB. Cox, Grey, Murray or Mettenberg could start at many a school in the SEC much less the country. We are much better off than UT or USC. UF has comparable QB depth. UF has a great one in Tebow and their backup has a lot of promise. After that I don’t think UF QBs are as good. UF has best two deep, but I don’t think four deep. I know who really cares about four deep at QB.

Will one of you Dawgs agree to date Rambler so she will finally stop trolling for a boyfriend?

At least no terrorists from UGA are on trial this week.

Yes UT lost to Wyoming. At least they play Wyoming and travel there. As for UF , UT has won more games against UF than has UGA in the past 20 years. By the way UT hasnt lost to Kentucky in 30 years.

Y’know, the thing I love best about college football in general and SEC football in particular is everybody starts off 0-0. Sure, Florida is picked to repeat again. Will it happen? Not a guarantee. Not with Colt McCoy, not with Sam Bradford. The great thing about it is any given Saturday, it’s anybody’s game. Good luck to the Dawgs this year (every game but one). We’re at less than 100 days!

Seriously, dude, count me in the minority as one who thinks UT will be pretty good. You just don’t get bad overnight.

However, I disagree with you on the Sam Bradford OU thing. They are the absolute worst BCS bowl team.

DAWGS SURPRISED IN ‘07 WITH A STRONG SECOND HALF, THE SAME WILL HAPPEN IN’09 WITH A VERY STRONG DEFENSE.

OKLA STATE HAS NO DEFENSE AND JUST THE START TO GET OUR OFFENSE MOVING!

DAWGS SCORE 30 AGAINST THE COWBOYS AND DEFENSE SLOWS THEM DOWN TO 20 OR LESS POINTS.

Tyler, did you accidently post that after you read it in another AJC article? It’s ok to have an original thought from time to time unless the Taliban has already brainwashed you.

I agree with AlwaysAVol, the SEC is always a race and what makes it generally alot better than other divisions. Tech has nobody to play for most of the season so that is why they ride the UGA game so much.

GA Tech Lies and Cheats and Everyone knows it. Why do we have to waste a whole weekend playing a lying/cheating school every year? And we usually win 8 or 9 games out of 10 against GA Tech. We should take the lying/cheating GA Tech school off the schedule and play a game in the dome every other year to take the place of the liar/cheater game in Atlanta. What do you think? We could be playing a school with classy players, fans, etc. instead of the biggest academic outlaw school in the country with ignorant fans. GA Tech is also known as “Steroid U”. Why waste time playing a scum wad school like that?

I’ve been to Wyoming and for the most part there is not a lot to brag about.

Congratulations on UT beating UF more in the last 30 years than UGA, I’m sure that will earn you some bonus points THIS season! Good luck in the swamp when “the crier” hangs 50 on UT!

Watch out for Joe Cox. He has more brains than Stafford and enough arm for fan’s to start questioning Richt’s decision to start Stafford rather than Cox last season.

The Dogs will start the 2009 season with a big win on the road. Yes, a 4-0 Georgia Bulldog team is a very strong possibility for September 2009. The Arkansas game will be closer than the game in Oklahoma.

The Bulldogs will end the season winning at least the last three games including their bowl game. Logan Gray will play a significant role at QB this year as will Joe Cox. The defense will be the major factor in providing the Bulldogs with a record at the end of the season that will be the same or better than the 2008 season. Four to six freshmen will make significant contributions to the stellar season. Jacksonville will be a taser party to remember. We all will enjoy 2009. Let the Big Dogs Eat. Woof, Baby, Woof!! Go Dogs!!!

UGA being 4-0 at the end of Sept. shouldn’t be a huge deal. Three of those teams will probably not finish in the Top 25. UGA being 4-0 might not mean the Dawgs are great; it might just mean OK State was overrated.

Georgias stregth this year will be on both offensive and defensive lines. The O line will provide Cox (or whoever we start) time to throw the ball and open holes for the RB. Receivers will be very good and have capable back ups. FB is not an issue, and the RB will be whoever has the best blocking in passing situations. The UGA Defense is strong up the middle. The interior D line will have multiple double teams allowing DEs to be more productive. LB’s are solid and should help in pass rush. Safeties will be very good. Evans will prove to be a very good Safety. That leaves CB as the biggest question on the team. With pressure from the line the CB will not have to cover for as long. The way to beat UGA defense is to attack the CBs in both passing and rushing. LB speed will help protect on the run. Offensively, Cox will have better numbers than Stafford simply because he will have more time to throw. The running game will be solid. Marlon Brown will have a great year. Green will have a solid year, but will have to deal with a lot of double teams. Other receivers will have to step up. Troupe will have to play up to his ability. This will be a very good UGA football team. The biggest question is what will their attitude be. Will they have the mentality of a junkyard dawg or a lap dog. With Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins, look for the junkyard dawg! They will be 10-2 or 11-1 at the end of the regular season. Upset of the year UGA over UF. No disrespect to UF but UGA will really be up for this game after the embarasment from last year and UGA has the talent top to bottom to compete with UF.

SOUTHGADAWG88, I agree with your 4:36 p.m. comment…I NEVER ( Capitalization DEDICATED to The Grinch) understood why so many fans are freaking out! CMR has proven himself to be committed to winning and I don’t think, for the briefest of moments, that he’s going to chalk this upcoming season to ‘rebuilding’. SC plays the dawgs tough most years, but i don’t see them beating uga. OK State will set the tone for uga. How they handle them will prove telling. Ark. won’t be easy, but like usc, I don’t see the dawgs losing. Of course, as a Tech fan, I’m pulling for the dawgs to go undefeated til November…would be REALLY GREAT ( again, for the grinch) if we could continue our new streak ;0)

RedandBlack,
Do you think Arkansas will be a good team this year? They were 2-6 in the SEC last year. A healthy, rebuilding program can follow that with a 4-4 season. If Petrino is going to turn them into West champs, he’ll need at least another year.
Perhaps you are just predicting the Ark. game to be close because you expect the Dawgs to play at the level of their opponents, like some of the Greene/Pollack teams did? That could happen.
