Ex-Dawgs don’t always follow party line

The Urban Crier doesn’t like former Florida players criticizing the way his team is run, as he made clear in recent comments widely viewed as being aimed at ex-Gator quarterback Shane Matthews, who was critical on his radio show of the lizards’ offensive plan in their loss to Ole Miss last year. Said the Crier: “You’re either a Gator or you’re not a Gator.” The subtext: If you criticize the Crier, you’re not a Gator.

Over in the Bulldog Nation, Mark Richt thankfully has a much thicker skin and lets the very occasional criticism from former Dawgs roll off his back, at least in public. Mr. 60-Yarder, Kevin Butler, has been openly critical of the Dogs’ approach to the kicking game, particularly coverage of kickoffs, in some of his post-game broadcasts in Athens. And another UGA kicking great, Rex Robinson, has posted comments here critical of the Richt program’s penchant for directional kickoffs.

Well, Robinson apparently isn’t thrilled with the Dawgs’s defense over the past couple of years, either, as he makes clear in a post on his new blog. Says Robinson: “As an old school guy that played when Coaches Dooley and Russell were in control, I understand the bend don’t break philosophy of defense. I also understood the ball control offenses we employed then. Y’all hated both of them then and you hate them now. Some things never change. The thing is, if you are gonna employ that conservative approach to defense, you have to be able to tackle, and we couldn’t much of the time last year. Especially in blowout games.”

He goes on to make the point that he thinks Richt may be too loyal to certain staff members, and obviously he’s talking about defensive coordinator Willie Martinez. “Let me be clear,” Robinson says. “I love and respect Mark Richt. I hope he stays forever, but does that mean he’s perfect and does not make mistakes? No. I just want him to scrutinize the performance of his coaches and hold them to the same level of accountability as he does his players.”

Now, I know there are readers of this blog who take a view along the lines of the Crier: If you support a team, you shouldn’t criticize it. As longtime readers know, I don’t subscribe to that philosophy.

And I’m glad that in the Bulldog Nation, even if you don’t agree with the head Dawg, you can still proudly call yourself a Dawg.

Woof woof.

Altamahadawg,

Sure, they’ve split with Richt the past two years, but Meyer and Saban are perfectionists who have 4 NCs between them. Do they always acheive that greatness? No, of course not. But they demand it.

Richt has yet to demand such excellence from his players. Just look at his quotes last year from some of the close games we had where we had 10 penalties.

Urban Crier….brilliant. Hours of brainstorming I’m sure.

Couldn’t agree more with Rex about directional kickoffs. I think they are largely responsible for the number of kicks out of bounds we had last year.

I could be wrong, like that has never happened, but I don’t think I predicted a MNC for football, although I will admit that after a few shots of General Neylands home brew, uh bore solvent, I came up with the “Earn It” slogan. And I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. “Earn It” meant they had to earn the number one ranking on the field. Prove it to me and the rest of the world that you are worthy of the number one ranking. I threw it out as a challenge. And the Dawgs were not up to the challenge or the ranking. Pre-season rankings are worth as much as a Confederate dollar. You earn it through the season. “Earn It” was pretty fun through the doldrums of waiting for the season to start. It was great blog material and I forgot how much traffic I generated for the AJC with that phrase. I would like the AJC to send me a royalties check that I will forward to General Neyland to get my next shipment of sippin, uh bore cleaner solvent. AJC you have my e-mail and shipping address, please forward promptly. Thanks for the reminder To. Good luck next year in the ACC with that High School offense and Coach Pajamas.

Now I may have said we would win the College World Series, that is something that I was more confident could happen. This year I think we win a regional then get beat. Oh Diamond Dawgs, prove me wrong.

To, the slogan “Earn It” was capitalized, please adjust your word program accordingly. Thanks.

lol…seriously? College football was just compared to a fascist leader during one of the worst genocides in human history ….only in a Georgia forum. The man flat out wins games, and does so by following his own set of rules. I admire Urban and all he stands for, and for what its worth I do think he is a good person despite the criticism of his own players. You can not accept the man because he out performs your team year after year….and that particular feeling comes from jealousy. I do get your argument of morality and its relationship to success….but I believe Urban possess both of these attributes. As for the insult to my intelligent at the end of your post…I will give you a little back ground on myself. I am currently on track to graduate from Georgia Tech with two degrees…one in History, Technology, and Society and the other being in Computer Science…with a minor in law. I am 18 years old and two years away from graduating with two degrees as I make my way to law school….unfortunately I will probably be going to UGA due to financial reasons. Now with that being said I am not completely lost on the subject being discussed in this forum….I mean this is about college football not a moral discussion blog. I stated Urban has successful methods and I believe he is a good man and coach…now this is my opinion so live with it and dont resort to calling someone ignorant as it does nothing but discredit your argument.

Urban has done a good job of winning championships with players that don’t belong in school by beating other teams with players that don’t belong in school. People bowing up with school pride over athletes that should not be accepted at community colleges is silly. I enjoy the heck out of watching college football, but realize how silly it is to even call 80% of these kids as student athletes.
Don’t go on about Urban, or Richt, or even coach Johnson “doing things the right way”. Its all about how far you can push the limits without a violation.

all you people do is look for a reason hate urban. you know the media fags are going to stick together. but here’s what we know
doesn’t maIt’s personal with Shane. Alma Mater and all that jazz don’t matter much to him when it’s personal, it seems. Plus he’s kind of a negative, hypercritical guy to begin with. I’ve been around him enough to know that he just bitches a lot, and mabey it gets taken the wrong way or out of context sometimes. But there’s no way to take his Meyer comments out of context.

It was one thing to criticize Meyer and the offense in 2005, and a totally different thing altogether to criticize them so vocally even now. Some of that criticism was deserved in 2005. But for pete’s sake, the man was owed a transition year, which very few (and some who still post here) were willing to give him completely and without reservation. The calls for Meyer’s head (or at least Mullen’s) were coming already in 2005, no later than midseason. Some of those critics around here have gagged themselves in the glow of Meyer’s great success, but let us have a couple of bad games and they’ll return to their old habits. Now, back to our story…

I can confirm Matthews makes highly negative comments about Meyer (even post-Mullen) in front of very powerful Bull Gators, hoping to sour them on Meyer. He does it on the radio, and he does it in private among his associates. He continues even to this day, after Meyer has won 2 BCS and 2 SEC championships. If you can’t get behind the current staff under those circumstances, one wonders what it would take to win you over. I cannot for the life of me understand the motives behind his undermining of Meyer, but there it is.

I happen to know what it would take to win Shane Matthews over: doing things exactly his way and Meyer coming to him hat in hand with an undeserved apology for sins Meyer never committed, and then Meyer’s resignation, with the immediate announcement that SOS was being rehired. For Shane, Meyer is a usurper. He’s not a Florida guy, and he’s not a legacy, nor does he have any prior attachment to the program, and I think that this bothers Shane to some extent. But that’s not all of it.

There was a lot of negativity coming out of OTC (Shane is close to Bell and those guys) back in 2005, and it didn’t much let up after we won it all the next year. Now, KB has too much class to go public with negativity on Meyer, but his private comments are another matter. When asked about Meyer and Mullen’s offense, Bell’s response was a sort of forced smile and a shrug. My understanding is that they patched things up and that Meyer did in fact have Bell around the football offices for consultation later. I won’t call it window dressing, but the intent was as much for PR among powerful boosters as anything else. Meyer and Mullen had no intention of running any other kind of offense. You have to understand something: Meyer was considered arrogant, and he is a bit arrogant. That’s ok. Highly successful people usually are a bit arrogant. It comes with the territory. You have to believe in yourself at that level or critics will eat you alive. If you shuffle your feet and do the aw shucks routine, behind the scenes the hyenas will get you. Meyer totally believes in his system. He is impatient with criticism that he doesn’t consider coming from a legit source. He thought he was being characterized unfairly.

Matthews was a thorn in the paw from the very outset. I think he felt that Meyer was an outsider (not a UF man) that Shane’s man (Spurs) had been sabotaged by Machen. Then when he saw the offense flounder some in 2005 and again (though far less) in 2006, he went ballistic and never subsequently stopped. His support of Meyer even after the 2009 BCS game was muted and sounded insincere, and then thereafter he was getting into the ears of Bull Gators again. Meyer himself admits the 2005 offense was non-functional. They tried to institute too much of their system too fast. But I’d rather an aggressive mistake than atavism from some former glory. Every coach needs to be given the opportunity to stand or fall on his own, with his own system.

I have no evidence that Bell was privately negative, only that there was a lot of negativity at OTC behind the scenes when he was there. Some of the folks there thought that some OTC players were being given short shrift by Meyer (such as LeCorn).

I believe that Matthews was in JB’s ear about how he’d be wasted at UF under Meyer, and this was one of the things that drove him to UT initially. All that business about cowboy culture, belt buckles, and boots was a smoke screen for some ugly stuff behind the scenes coming from Matthews. Bell was supportive of Meyer and UF, but in a kind of passive way, and didn’t really push UF because while he supported the alma mater, he didn’t support Meyer’s offense -at least not convincingly. Matthews also had a verbal altercation with Mullen at a football camp. I was not there. The story is that Mullen was visiting the camp and had some negative comments about how they were training the QB campers, to which Matthews took exception. I’m unsure if that version of the story has anything to recommend it as a fair account of the incident, but I’m quite sure the incident itself is not apocryphal.

Meyer had to work very, very hard to convince the Brantleys that he knew what to do with Johnny. And just to do the OTC folks some credit, no one but Shane was actively against Meyer. They simply didn’t know what to make of the UF offense, it was so radically different than what they were used to and what they thought would work, both for UF success and for Johnny. Some well meaning criticism of the Mullen-Meyer offense was not totally out of place in 2005. You saw what they wanted to do. You also how they just couldn’t get the kids to do some of it with any consistency. You saw the blowout loss to Bama after a promising start. And finally, you saw how Meyer needed his own kids for it to really shine. That’s nothing against Zook’s kids. They were recruited for a totally different scheme and had different skills than what Meyer and Mullen needed.

So Meyer did film sessions with the Brantley’s showing them how he was planning to use Johnny. Mullen was grilled on some occasions. Finally they became slowly convinced that Meyer knew what he was doing and the loyalty to UF factor began kicking in. But we came pretty close to losing a kid who should have been a surefire legacy and a mortal lock to UF. And some of that was due to Shane Matthews, who while the Brantleys and others were just trying to get questions answered and get satisfied on certain points, was a poisonous tongue yammering in the background.

I don’t have any person gripe against Shane. I’m sure he feels he has his reasons. But I can’t understand why for the sake of the program he can’t keep the highly critical stuff under wraps for now and come along for the ride.

Hey, Lenny, congrats on your team’s success. What does th Bear mean to an 18 year old recruit? Nothing.
The national recruiting base that the Bear built was amazing, and buried in the past. Fact is, as good as Alabama high school ball is, the state is too small to fill the depth that a college program needs to be a consistant title winner and they lost their national recruiting base and they are not getting it back. Neither is Tennessee. You will have years that you beat UGA and Florida, but Alabama is good for about one SEC title per decade. Be proud of your history because it’s just that. My 17 year old son puts about as much stock in the rich Alabama history as he does about the great Army teams from yesteryear.

But the bottom line is, it’s like LIG in the Gator Nation, Life Is Good, and there’s no reason that every Gator should not be celebrating the success that Coach Meyer has brought, for these are truly some golden years for Florida Football. In all honesty, how much longer will Meyer be at Florida? Quite frankly, as a Georgia fan, it doesn’t matter to me, because we would struggle in Jax even if Ray Goff was coaching the gators. Well, maybe not, but you get my point.

I think that if Meyer truly didn’t have interest in Notre Dame, he would come right out and say it. He hasn’t, and I don’t think it’s for contract negotiation reasons. He has stated it is his dream job. True, he didn’t take it the first time around, but at that time he was realatively unproven, and the domers wouldn’t shell out the big bucks for him. Now it’s a different story. Nobody has the financial resources of Notre Dame, and yes, I’m including Texas.

Meyer is a midwest guy, and he would be the perfect fit. I think if he wins another MNC next year, he is gone. Look for UF to go after Shanahan or Stoops. Again.

I have no problem with disagreements among family members. And just like in my own family, some don’t have a clue what they are talking about. Take Rex Robinson for example. Year before last when the defense was #2 in the nation, Coach Martinez walked on water. Then when he inherited season ending injuries and players who make stupid decisions on and off the field, suddenly he can’t coach. Defies logic. Rex, would you fire a man who had several years of success because in one year the players themselves collapsed? Last years defensive woes are on the players, not the coaches. The players sucked. Blaming Martinez for that is like blaming coach Hartman for you missing a field goal. He can only coach, he can’t kick it for you. Coaches coach, players play. I assure you there is no coach, at any level from 8 year olds up, that teach players to tackle using the belly bump method. Players make those decisions during the play.

And WILEY, with your two degrees and lies and all………what makes you think that someone is a good person when those close to him say otherwise and you have no personal experience in the matter? Do they teach logic at the technical college and it wasn’t a requirement for you?

PHIL

May 17th, 2009

MIKE ADDINGTON, again, players play coaches coach. The WR coach can’t go out there and catch it for them. And you can’t coach “not choking.” You get the players you have because you believed they had demonstrated some ability at what ever their position requires. Maybe the receivers weren’t evaluated properly, but you can’t teach someone not to drop a pass in a game. They either catch it or not. The fact they just caught 200 just like it in practice the week before doesn’t matter. It’s the player that drops the pass not the coach.

What concerned Coach Meyer was that Shane Matthews never discussed his thoughts about the offense with him. Shane just went on a rant about the offense, during his radio show. I’m not saying that Shane should clear what is on his show with Coach Meyer, but I think he should have voiced his opinion with the coaching staff before he complained about the offense, on his show. Both Coach Meyer and Shane Matthews have met, since this dispute, and have made amends. See you boys, in Jax.

Scratching my head over the Mark T reply. Don’t know what that has to do with putting up a statue to an individual who really didn’t do much over the 25 years he coached at UGA. As stated in the Blog article, Dooley really wasn’t that popular during his coaching years before & after Walker because of his 3 yards & a cloud of dust philosophy. Georgia fans were ready to ride Dooley out of town on a rail, his offense was so boring. And remember, when you go slamming Goff, he was simply running the offense and calling the plays given to him in that system.

As for dawgy. I think he’s a little thin skinned. Don’t know what he’s talking about. I’m not a Bama fan, just a Jack-arse from Ludowici.

To recent comments about CWM being a genius in ‘07, I’m not sure who said that. In a lot of games in ‘07 we did not perform very well. I think at the end of the season we were the very best team in college football and anyone would have been afraid to play us in a bowl. LSU was extremely lucky they did not have to face us in the SECCG. Football is a funny game and I think the end of the ‘07 season was dominated by Marcus Howard and a few teammates who caught the spirit and confidence. I am not sure CWM deserves the credit for it any more than he is not totally to blame for early ‘07 and all of ‘08. I just have to consider that the defense has trended downhill over the last 4-5 years for some reason!

I think Kevin Butler’s comments are on point! After a year or more it seems to finally be striking a cord with CMR. Kevin is a loyal Dawg and one does not need to attack his son to make a point. Drew will do his best and we should wish him the best.

I also think Rex makes valid points. As most he is frustrated with recent defensive efforts. He was in the dressing rooms and meetings years ago, he saw first hand the intensity of Coach Russell, and he can appreciate the drop-off. At least respect him for what he did for the program.

Once again the question of location for the GA/FLA game. CMR’s points were excellent. Strong consideration should be given for the Georgia at least one in four. Fans should look for the good of UGA and not themselves. I’m sure I live closer to Jax that 98% of you on this blog. The MOST IMPORTANT factor is who has the week off before the game. If you don’t believe me, check the series. Since the game is so important it seems imperative that we schedule that week off in the future. That is more important than where it is played.

Congrats to UM and Tebow. Am I envious? Of course, who wouldn’t be? I don’t agree with everything our staff does and I damn sure don’t have to agree with the way you conduct yours!

Go Dawgs!!!!!!!!!

Criticizing a two-time national champion coach from your alma mater isn’t wise any way you cut it. I’m sure if Richt had those credentials you would feel the same way Bill. This “story ” or blog is much ado about nothing.
