Hate not too strong a word for Dogs-Jackets rivalry

The No. 15-ranked Diamond Dogs’ 7-5 win over No. 7 Georgia Tech in front of 24,665 fans Tuesday at Turner Field was big for a couple of reasons, despite being one of those late-season midweek nonconference games that don’t really affect either team’s postseason hopes.

First, it cemented Atlanta’s seven-year-old Spring Baseball Classic for Kids charity game as one of the nation’s best-attended college games, drawing the sixth largest regular season crowd in NCAA baseball history and the second largest crowd ever for the classic.

But more importantly to UGA fans, it was a win over our most hated rival and means the Dogs have won the last five classics in a row.

Any win over the insects, no matter the sport, is a big deal just because we hate them and they hate us. Whether it’s the “clean, old-fashioned hate” of sporting legend or the decidedly muckier version practiced by North Avenue posters to this blog, it still boils down to hate.

Too strong a word? Maybe back in my Dad’s era when a lot of UGA fans considered Tech the second state school and would root for them except when they played the Dogs. But in my lifetime the rivalry has sharpened to the point where most fans for each school take great delight in any misfortune that befalls the other. The combination of a Georgia win and a Tech loss (preferably a blowout) makes for the finest kind of fall Saturday.

Now I’m not saying that Tech is our biggest or most important rival, especially in football. That hasn’t been the case since the Jackets bolted from the SEC.

Just our most hated rival.

In my mind, our biggest rival (and one nearly as hated as Tech) is Florida. Especially in football, where the annual game in Jacksonville looms large in deciding the SEC East. And especially since the Spurrier era, when his obnoxious demeanor (and string of wins over the Dogs) let loose the inner jerk residing in most Gator fans. (I say most, not all, because my next-door neighbor the Gator is actually a really nice guy. Can’t say that about any Jackets fans I’ve known.)

So, as I’ve said before here, I’d list Tech and Florida as our top rivals, with Tennessee and Auburn in the next rank. (Once upon a time, Clemson was also at the top of that list, but we don’t play them that often any more.) While UT fans can be twice as obnoxious as Gator fans, particularly in Knoxville, that rivalry only really heated up when they became an every-year opponent in football and doesn’t yet match our thing with the Gators. Given a choice between beating either Florida or Tennessee in any given year, I think most fans would pick the Florida game in a heartbeat.

Auburn, of course, is our oldest rivalry, dating to 1892, and it’s an intense one for a lot of UGA fans, particularly those like my friends Steve and John who either have in the past or still live among the War Eagle types across the border. For many UGA fans, though, Auburn fans are more like our country cousins. The two schools share a lot of ties, have been known to hire each other’s graduates as coaches, and a lot of families are split, with grads from both schools.

So I don’t really hate Auburn. (”You wouldn’t feel that way if you ever had to live over there,” Steve told me recently when a group of us were discussing our most hated rivals. And I’m sure he’s right.)

Beyond that, I don’t think hatred is really a word that applies to our other rivalries. While Gamecock fans seem to spend the entire summer keying on their September meeting with the Dogs, those UGA fans who don’t live near or among the eternally optimistic South Carolina faithful attach importance to the game mainly as our SEC opener and usually the first real challenge of the season (though far from the biggest one). So that rivalry is bigger in Augusta than in Athens.

As for our other every-year opponents, Vandy and Kentucky, they’ve never been good enough on a consistent basis in football for much of a rivalry to develop. And in basketball, while Georgia fans pack the Steg every year when the Wildcats come to Athens, it’s more of a David vs. Goliath sort of scenario than a true rivalry.

And while our rotating games against teams from the SEC West are important, aside from our permanent opponent, Auburn, no true rivalry has developed. If we played Alabama more often, that rivalry would probably zoom to the top, especially with Nick Saban there, because their fans are, let’s face it, clinically insane. But I don’t think UGA fans really work up a true hatred for Bama, at least not one to match our big four. And whenever we’ve played LSU, I’ve found their fans to be among the most likable I’ve encountered. They’re good folks to tailgate with, and coming out of the Georgia Dome after the last time the Dogs whipped them in the SEC championship, I actually had several of them say, “Good game.” One Tiger fan even high-fived me when he said it.

If that ever happened with a Tech or Gator fan, I’d be so stunned I’d have to double-check the colors they were wearing.

Then I’d rush off to wash that hand.

This is a fantastic post. Pretty much sums up all the rivalries very well.

I don’t hate Tech, I wish them well when they don’t play us. But this stems from my confidence in UGA. I want a highly ranked, unflawed Tech team to play the Dawgs at the end of the year. That way more people will be watching when we stomp them into the turf.

UF is big on everyone’s list due to the domintation as of late. Although the games have been much closer in the past 4 years.

AU is my number 1. I live among many of their fans.

You are 100% right!! Living and working in Atlanta all my adult life, I absolutely HATE GT! I have some good friends who went to Tech and I have mellowed in the last few years. Florida fans are just downright annoying. They think they invented football in 1991, but they really invented jorts and tank tops. Auburn is just Auburn and nothing else needs to be said. Everybody has stories of how obnoxious Auburn fans are in Auburn and Dawg fans are in Athens. But that is like fighting with your brother. We don’t have room for USC to be a rival. They need us to give their program validation. We need them like a Techster needs another pimple.

The first eight games are just pre-season, stat building exercises. Three of the last four are what UGA is about. I don’t care if we go 3-9 as long as we beat fl, AU and GT. And this year we will do it!!!

While I was watching the end of the game last night, I saw one of the most annoying things in recent memory. There was a Tech fan..(sorry, a NERD) doing the gator chomp behind home plate. Obviously he was doing this to distract our pitcher. That was the most annoying, stupid, and LAME thing i have seen in a while. All i kept hoping was that someone would trip and hit him or poor a warm beer on him.

I hope that he reads this and realizes how much of a total D-bag he really is.

So, Tech or FL. You can take your pick, but for me it was summed up last night. BOTH suck equally.

So do you see the same sort of even taking place last night if it was GA-FL or GA-Auburn? How about in basketball? But look what happens when you throw a basketball game or baseball game or volleyball game for that matter and pit GA v. TECH. That’s a rivalry.

Huh?

Here’s the difference between Georgia and Georgia Tech fans. Techies cannot stand UGA’s very existence. They hate every thing about it. The school itself, its students, its athletic teams, the janitorial staff. You name it and those crybabies hate it. If they had half as much passion for their own teams as they do for hating Georgia they might be able to fill their football stadium, but that of course is not the case. I believe that Georgia fans, on the other hand, hold very little animosity towards the institution of Georgia Tech itself and its athletic program. Its a great school for what it offers and there have been several Georgia Tech athletes and coaches over the years that I admire. The problem is the fans. That is what we hate. They are all fine human beings that I have no problem with on a personal level, but when it comes to sports they are the worst crybaby panty wastes in all of the sporting world. I mean we beat them 7 years in a row in football and all we hear from them is excuses and low life cheap shots about the integrity of our football program. Then the second they get a fluke 3 point win we’re supposed to bow down and kiss their pocket calculators. I’ll give them one thing. They’ve got a lot of nerve. There will be lots of Georgia fans that will tell you that they want to see Georgia Tech do well when they aren’t playing Georgia. I am not one of them because of their fans. I hope they fall flat on their face every time they step on a playing field, whatever that playing field might be. Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face that Georgia Tech sports fans in absolute misery. Thanks and have a great day.

The sports moment that makes me the happiest is at the end of the game when Georgia has won.

The sports moment that makes me the second happiest is at the end of the game when Georgia Tech has lost.

For all of their talk of superior academics, they are the ones who went on NCAA probation for playing 11 academically ineligible football players over a 7 year period, lied about it, and then hurried and self reported when it became apparent that the truth was coming out. That personifies Tech’s character.

For all of their talk of superior academics, the are the ones who failed to meet NCAA academic standards recently in their basketball program and had scholorship reductions imposed. That personifies Tech’s character too.

And whatever became of the Joe Hamilton episode? It was never reported in the AJC.

With all of the hate around the world, it’s kind of immature to resort to that in sports. My two sons graduated from Georgia, and I from Tech. I don’t hate UGA, and they don’t hate Tech. We have a good time rooting against each other when the two schools get together, but it’s over when it’s over. Maybe we should step back and look at what’s most important in our lives, and it’s sports, then maybe we should get a life.

To me, The word ‘rivalry’ insinuates an evenly heated match between two opponents. That’s hardly the case with UF. They’re not really our rival. We just hate them because they beat us almost every year, and their fans (in general) are among the worst in the SEC, to boot. I guess all that winning goes to their heads.

HUH? that fluke 3 point win is as funny as the fumble that sat in the pile forever that was not blown dead and turned into a UGA TD or the “FUMBLE on the Goal Line” that let TECH win. That is football. All that being said I have to agree with “HATE”. I would not Pi$$ on my own dog or on a Dawg Fan that was on Fire but other than that I would. I hate that many georgians are UGA fans and have never stepped foot in the classroom or in the “Septic Tank of the South”. I have friends & family that are UGA fans. I do love them and have Thanksgiving dinner with them but on that Saturday after the turkey is done it is on. My sister married a UGA GRAD and they lived in married housing while he went to school as they had a child. My sis drove one of the Campus buses and she wore her TECH hat everyday. One student said I think you are confused as to where you are. She smiled and said my dad is a TECH GRAD and he paid the cost for me to do a lot and go to school and I am still a Tech fan. The guy just shook his head and told my sis that he could respect that. I think bothsides respect eachother to a point, but is like talking Religion or Politics you just don’t do it if you want to stay friends. As a Tech fan this year was a great Sunday School day after the TECH win. I just wore Khaki pants, Blue Blazer, White Polo, and My Yellow Tech Tie and never said a word. It was interesting that getting coffee there was no talk about the weekends football games for the first time all season.

The die hards show up on this blog….most Tech people I know or are friends with are good people…..
But, it’s the good looking sister syndrome for most Tech fans. Uga, being the State flagship University, gets all the ink, all the talk and Most Tech Grads move back to Boston, Jersey and India and don’t really support the teams after they leave. Tech has a wonderful history, with Bobby Dodd, which I admire greatly, and Tech people hold on to that, as we do Herschel. I do agree with the previous poster, I really think there is a culture at Tech of Hating everything UGA 365 days a year, while most Georgia people think of Tech only when we play them. Too many pretty girls and fun in Athens to worry about Tech. I’m serious. not bashing…..

That is correct. I hold very little animosity towards the Georgia Institute of Technology or its athletic programs. I hope my child is lucky enough to go there should that be their path. As for the athletic programs, what’s to hate? Its just a bunch of college kids working their butts off. Hard to hate that. If only they had better fans though. Its really a shame. They deserve so much better.

To sum it up, tech fans and school show their feelings with THWG in their school fight song. What other school shows such an inferior little brother complex that they have to put down another rival in their own fight song? I hope they lose every game they play but other than that don’t feel the need to take cheap shots at the school or academics. Huh said it best, but the bottom line is that a lot of tech fans feel they have to pull UGA down to boost themselves up. I can see the two schools for what they are, two vastly different academic programs that both offer good education for a wide range of fields.

Tech would get zero publicity if it wasn’t for UGA. They should be thanking us. Sure, the AJC will occasionally throw them a bone and do a story on them, and that’s cute. But on a national level? Please. Tech gets no love from major media outlets in terms of news. They’ll have to become relevant first, which is going to take 20 straight wins against UGA. Also, FSU and Miami will have to take complete nose-dives in order for Tech to help its case. Even though these two programs haven’t been good recently, they still get more coverage than Tech because nobody gives a crap about the rest of the ACC. Period.

Sorry, but it’s true.

uga football is the braves of baseball(besides the one world series ring).

i guarantee uga fans(i am one now- read last paragraph) during a football game is only secured about victory just 25% of the time. the other 75% is a nail-biting/yelling at mark richt or coordinators. yes… the sec is the toughest, but do you think fl, al, or lsu goes through the mental and emotional ups and downs during the game as the dogs? no… they punish their opponents and kill their “hatred” teams so bad that after the game they will drink the rest of their whiskey in sorrow.

this blog is more of being a “hater” than hate(good blog though). always thinking you’re a top program, but… history proves otherwise(barring gymnastics and tennis:)
Why was there even mentioning of the lesser teams in the sec? david vs. goliath? guess florida would think in the same terms vs. UGA. lol.

Personally I grew up HATING UGA!!! I wouldnt even wear red until high school. Since I started watching pollack and co. their senior season, I’ve really became a “fan” of the football program. Up until this recruiting season, I wanted the GA’s elite high school football players to stay in state and play for Richt(a class act). Now we have one of our own, and Bobby Dodd stadium will be more gold and white than red… well slightly more.

I always viewed Tech as the little brother. You are supposed to beat them and take no joy in it, but you don’t want to lose to your little brother. I never viewed them as equals when we played them in Rugby; just little nerdy kids.

I know it was different when they had the great Bobby Dodd. But just like you don’t consider your little brother a true rival, i don’t consider Tech one right now. I would love it if they came on, and Johnson appears to be giving them a shot. You root for your little brother, but you don’t want to lose to them.

The difference is to me that there are also pro sports here. People can go to the UGA/tech game on Sat and sit next to each other the next day pulling on the coons. In alabama you have nothing but college sports. What kind of losers at life get 100,000 to go to a spring game? It must suck to be an Alabama fan.

Before this year, I thought that losing to Florida was worse than losing to GT. In the past few years, Florida is the roadblock to a special football season and we lose a lot more of those than we win. In that respect I consider Florida our biggest rival.

More recently, however, I have found tech fans to be even more intolerable than Florida fans. Reading this blog each day has had a large impact on my opinion of Tech fans. I have found the tech people that I meet in person to be generally personal folks that like to exchange a barb or two about football in good fun, which I is what I like about rivalries. The Tech fans I find on this blog are mean spirited and much more bold than their success should afford them, which is what I dislike about rivalries.

Basically Florida is the bigger kid in the neighborhood that you enjoy beating when you can. Tech is your younger brother that you consistently beat but wins one every now and again…just enough to keep him coming back.

Out of curiosity…the years that Georgia beats Tech in football, is one of our fans trolling the Tech blogs posting the score of the last game every single day? I sure hope not.

The biggest thing that makes me mad is the constant referrals to UGA fans as rednecks, that primarily never go to class or the school. There are a lot more Georgia fans out here that never went to UGA or become fans while they are growing up and remain UGA fans for life. Also, this is a sport we are talking about so it is not a requirement that anyone graduate from the School to be a fan. I find it insulting that constant references to ‘non graduates’ are all rednecks and if you do not go to the school you are an inferior fan. I went to a college that had lower level football and remained a fan of UGA along with the many policeman, firemem, etc. that did not go to UGA but have elected to support our BIGGEST IN STATE SCHOOL. All of the high minded tech fans that think you are intellectual superior you remember your lives often depend on the group of people that you make fun of the most.

uga_b I agree GT is little Brother and you are supposed to beat them more times than not which UGA does. They don’t like you because of it and try to justify everything they ever did to be better than you.

Florida is UGA’s most hated football rival at the moment and as a whole the most heated of all UGA matchups. If you don’t think so go down to Jax on game day.

In the 80’s when Dooley owned UF, Auburn was rival #1. I remember some real hate being there. We rolled up in our van to tail gate and some Auburn fans came up wanting to kick the doors in. My father and uncle put an end to that along with my 2 older cousins. Auburn is now more like our cousin. The histories and families of the schools are both very mixed.

Going into last season I wanted to beat UF 1st, then in order UT, LSU, Auburn, and then GT. GT is now fighting for 2nd. It is a close call between hearing m and Ramble On for another year or that clown Kiffen.

I am a current Tech student. I am not from India, Boston, or Jersey so let me try to relate to people here.

Our fans do actaully suck…a lot. I think that Tech’s socially-maladjusted fanbase is due to two main things. The first is that god-forsaken move out of the SEC. Worst idea ever. I hold that Tech football should have stayed in the money and would’ve at worst become like a Vandy or MSU for those down years instead of nearly falling to Div 2. The second is runaway academic success (not of that of the teams…but of the Institute itself). 7th place among all public schools and top five in the engineering sciences is going to garauntee nerdiness to an extant. BUT there are still well-rounded real people at Tech that are nice folks and love to dress up, head to the Dodd and enjoy some historic Southern football on a sunny afternoon. They are the type that Tech needs to figure out a way to get more of.

Now when it comes to U(sic)GA I will never apologize for basing the hatred on something far deeper than sports. There was blood in the water from the first moment that a Georgia politician stood up in the legislature and fought for Tech never to exist outside of his own alma mater in Athens. Or how about the first time Tech football players were injured because the Georgia Wildcats (back then) fans were throwing rocks at them? That was over a hundred years ago, and the Tech students that are passionate about their school vow never to forget such things. Competition should make our two schools better. And both schools are certainly well-respected…at VERY different things. HATE, however, will aways be HATE!

By the way, RealityCheck, Bama is another school that derides its historical opponents in her fight song. I believe the line is “we’ll teach those bulldogs to behave, and send the yellow jackets to a watery grave”? Just sayin…it’s not unique to Tech.

I am fortunate in some ways to have attended both schools. I found neither school to be far superior to the other academically. However, I found Athens to be more than just a school, it was atmosphere, friends who grew up with the same attitudes and backgrounds, along with a great place to live. Most of my Tech friends are pretty good people but these young guys come from a different planet. I get tired of the same old score posting and how dumb UGA grads and fans are. Let’s discuss football. If you want to post the hateful stuff, then start your own blog.

Ramble on and PHD 09′, a Tech degree does not buy you any class. You can make all of stupid references you want, a high IQ or Tech degree is just that. Most people I know that are technically smart have low common sense and have trouble relating to the real world. You are evidence of that. I know if no one with the ambition to come to the crime infested campus of yours so why would anyone be jealous.

Keep up the good work Bill. I enjoy the back and forth if it stays clean. Again I hope you had a nice Mother’s Day. I hope you went to her site and placed flowers. Sorry you lost MOM last year. What amazes me is a lot of GT fans are quick to point out about the arrests of UGA players, whether it’s for drug use, underage drinking, DUI, or whatever else. But, GT fans can’t sit there and tell me that their athletes are perfect and don’t do any of that stuff. There’s a major difference in being located in Athens and Atlanta. In Atlanta, it’s easier to hide because of how big the city is, whereas Athens is a lot different. There are just as many GT players that are smoking weed and driving drunk as there are UGA guys. Their college kids. Do you really expect everyone to be perfect angels?

I’m fortunate enough to have lived near, gone to church with, and worked with some fine Georgia grads and fans. If I relied on anonymous internet postings and interactions with drunk game-day fans to determine my opinion of UGA, it would be an easy call to hate UGA in a big way. I occasionally leave these comments sections fired up about UGA fans, but I don’t let it define the entire fan base for me. These are anonymous comments; they bring out the worst in people.

That said, I get more fired up for any Tech-UGA game than any other event on the schedule. I respect Coach Richt and think many (if not most) of the kids in the program seem like good people, but nothing is more important (in sports) to me than beating UGA. Getting the FSU monkey off our backs was important this year, too, but it can’t compete with the UGA win for putting some confidence back in the program. A baseball sweep would have been fun, but now we can look to the ACC tournament and try to have a productive postseason for a change.

Here’s to Richard, Dan, Tate, Dean, Matt, and the rest of the decent Dawg fans out there. Go Jackets!

Pi$$onaDAWG, despite what may be written, I have been to some games and do not recall the THW? words being openly sung/sang and I have been to Tech games against other teams when the song comes to the end it still says THWG. I may be wrong but my point is that TECH goes out of its way in everything it does to pronounce its hate with Georgia, whereas most Georgia fans and students that I have visited on campus did not really care one way or the other about Tech until game day.

The pathetic thing though is how Tech fans think they’ve turned the rivalry around. Techies, we were not going to beat you forever! The way you are acting tells me you thought we would!

I went home to Marietta at Christmas and never saw more Tech garb worn in the malls and restaurants in my entire life! They all came out of the woodwork after the one rare victory. After Christmas day, it was worse. It was like they finally had Santa Claus bring them their techie gear b/c they were finally not ashamed. So how’s the weather outside guys? Pretty fair?

The “Ramblin’ Wreck” fight song is a tradition dating back, in its current form, to 1911. (http://ramblinwreck.cstv.com/trads/geot-trads.html) Take a read through the Tech traditions; most of them started in the late 19th century when Tech first played Georgia in one sport or another. But one pesky aspect of traditions is that when you change them, they’re not traditional anymore. I’ve had people literally all over the world hum or sing the Ramblin’ Wreck fight song to me when they find out that I’m a fan/grad. It’s unique and famous, and we’ll keep it just the way it is, thanks.

I will ask UGA fans to realize a few thing about TECH football. We were GREAT after the MEN came back from WWII, ARMY was great During the war. Many men came back from the WAR, using the GI Bill, to get an education and they picked Enginerring to advance this country. Now, with IT and Bio-Tech engineering the “MEN” are not 6′2″ and football or basketball players build as much. A 5′5″ student dosen’t a football player make. We do get our fiar share of players but UGA offers classes that more people can pass. That is not a Hit it is a Fact. How many VETs and Lawyers do you have on your teams? You also have to remember folks that anything a UGA athletic team ever accomplishes simply comes down to one of two things according to Tech fans: a) luck or b) cheating of some form or another (the refs gave it to us or we recruit a bunch of thugs, etc. etc.) To hear a Tech fan tell it, UGA athletic teams have never accomplished anything on their own merits, particularly the football team. I wanted to vomit when grown men approached me and my son barking in our faces (and to be fair, I have seen Tech fans act egregious as well to a few U[sic]GA fans)… let’s not be so personal… I think the rivalry would be better off if the hate part was restricted to the gridiron. Having been on both sides of this game. I wanted to be an engineer out of High School after attending UGA footballs games all my life. HOPE made GT the logical choice. I can say the GT fans were far more rude and disliked UGA far more. Some of the GT students did seem to hate UGA more than they liked GT.

Yes I transferred out of GT in good academic standing on schedule to graduate as a EE. The late 90s were not a good time to be into anything computer related and I hated the student life at Tech. Reality Check

May 13th, 2009
4:44 pm

45-42= haha, Georgia State may have technically more students, but anyone with sense knows that UGA is the flagship University for the state of Georgia. You may be right, but outside of Atlanta I would say that for everyone one person from my high school that went to Georgia State there are ten that go to UGA. That is the measure of a flagship school, bringing students in from all over the state. Georgia State is primarily a commuter school pulling from metro atlanta. This is no knock on Georgia State is is a good school and serves a purpose.

I do agree it is more fun to consider the rivalry has been re-born. I would love for the games to have the importance of the mid 90’s Fla-Flast games. UGA fans know first hand to lose someone 9/10 or common we lived through that with Tenn during Goof/Donnan era and Florida still.

Huh?

May 13th, 2009
4:45 pm

Oh, and one other thing about Tech fans: They are liars. 99% of this stuff they say about outlandish UGA fan behavior is absolute hogwash. It didn’t happen and exists only in their imaginations. Why is it that Tech fans are so full of these UGA fan horror stories while we rarely hear much out of other fans that visit our stadium? Doesn’t it seem a little fishy? I think they make it up to justify their insane jealous rage of all things UGA. They need a boogey man.

I will assume that your name is an initial signifying one of two nicknames you’ve earned. However, decorum and the AJC filter prevent me from suggesting what they are in this forum.

Whatever you might feel about your experience at Sanford, I would imagine that a survey of our SEC opponents fan bases would show quite different results. Every fan of other schools that I’ve talked to have enjoyed their Athens experience. Tech fans, no doubt, feel less welcome. If you wondering why that is it is because you are not. Stay home and watch on TV. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Failure to adhere could result in substantial psychological damage and perhaps, in merited circumstances, physical pain and suffering. Unfortunately, being a Tech fan, medical attention may not be immediately forthcoming as your convulsions may be confused with dancing. (Did anyone see the two male Tech fans dancing on TV last night? That was amazing. Truly amazing. Looked they they had epilepsy.)

If that ever happened with a Tech or Gator fan, I’d be so stunned I’d have to double-check the colors they were wearing.

Then I’d rush off to wash that hand.

you talk all the smack saying tech fans are jerks and then you cant be respectful, THEN you post this…seems like that inner jerk is always out for you. I hope tech wins whenever we play yall but i also respect your program and think CMR is doing a great job over their….for all the crap you say about tech fans you are living the same a UGA fan.

I hate Florida. I hate Auburn. Tech is an ACC team who happens to be an in state rival. They (Tech( have to win sometimes. Its not like another state is getting bragging rights. I am proud of Tech, and I bleed red and black.

Georgia State is not the state’s largest. Its spring enrollment was reported as 27,424 while UGA’s spring enrollment was 32,968.

My sister is a proud alumna of the university of georgia. I ,myself, am a proud student at the georgia institute of technology. I grew up rooting for both schools and still do. I have nothing against UGA other than this: I wanted to attend the university, but was waitlisted. I got into Tech early and had to sit on it for almost the entire year. My heart was set on UGA because it felt like home from my sister attending the fine school, but it was not best for me. I was not happy with the way the admissions department at UGA told me that I would receive a final decision in the mail and I never did. So thus, I enrolled in my new home on North Avenue. I have met some amazing friends there and it was for the best. I respect coach richt and johnson for their roles as men trying to lead others my age into adulthood as well. I just am disappointed for not being able to have the family legacy. Instead I have my own. I love tech and always will. My heart was broken by UGA this past summer and now I have it put together again by tech. I have seen both sides. The students of Tech want better fans to show up and have the passion of UGA fans. But we also are fans because we attend the school. I did not know what it would feel like to watch the UGA-Tech game alined anew, but it was fine. I was able to finally enjoy the game and not be stressed like so many UGA fans are. I only have this to say. I am proud of my Jackets for making it a rivalry and it made it poetic justice for me personally that they won. Now my sister and I have a friendly rivalry, but my love for what the schools represent will never change. I personally hate Fla and VT far more than I will ever hate UGA. I think tech should focus on its rivalries with miami, vt, and clemson more, because we are obsessed. I wish both teams well until november 28th. God Bless you all and take things less seriously. It is only a game.

Blah, blah, blah.

Florida is our biggest rival and it is proven every year. Your neighbor will be a nice guy until we turn the tables on them. Fla fans think we’re a joke right now which is why they are nice sometimes.

Tennessee fans twice as obnoxious as Florida fans? What planet are you from?

If we have ‘pack mentality’ then Tech has ‘trio mentality.’ You just don’t notice since you only have 3 fans.

Milton, the answer to your question is 5. Tech has 5 SEC titles. They’re very old, but it’s more than many teams still IN the SEC…including yours.

This could be a very good blog to discuss UGA sports were it not for the ignorant chick “ramble on” constantly spewing her venom. What is your envy of the UGA blogs ramblewoman? Looks to me like it’s you who is envious or you would not be here all day, every day, licking our boots.

One of my best friends in my church is a Tech grad. He went to Tech the year before I went to UGA. Since I graduated in ‘83 you can imagine how many Sundays after a UGA-Tech game we have had. Whoever wins, we have a good natured needling. Durning the rest of the season, the few minutes before church we break down our respected weekend games. I have depended on him, just as he has depended on me. A rivalry sure, pure hatred, I just have better things to be concerned about. Most all of the junk I read on here from Tech I take with a grain of salt, so should be my comments regarding the Institute.

With that said, when do we order the Turner Field commerative 7-5 rings?

BILL BILL BILL 12? let us count. 42, 46 split with UT, 48, 59, 66 split with BAMA, 68, 76 split UK, 80, 81 split with BAMA,82, 02, 05 so that is 12 but 4 split championships so that is 8 or do you count Ga. Tech’s 1990 National Championship Real, after the Buffs had 5 downs to get a fake TD? Let us split hairs equally. agree?

You know you give the Island a bad name. Next time I am on the Island I am going to drag you down Mallery. Stop in Brogens and have a beer. Drag you through the park. Let you play on the swing sets. Drag you down the pier and drop you in the Channel. I’ll make sure it is a Saturday so you can count it as your bath.

RAMBLESteveKneejerkONSuperior – so you’re able to get more tickets to the UGA game? LOL!! What a load of crap. Wait a minute – maybe you’re right. The interest in GT football IS kind of low so I guess there will be extra tickets to purchase for your big in state rival – probably right up to game day. Especially considering that sardine can you call a stadium.

I know rivalries. The first high school football games I attended were in Pensacola, where hate of the other team is both family value and church doctrine. Then I attended football games to watch my sister march in the band representing a certain winning high school in the lovely burg of Valdosta. I lived in Los Angeles where the roots of all evil were the baseball team from San Francisco, the basketballers from Milwaukee, & the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. I played high school football in Alabama, where no matter your affiliation, the phrases “Roll Tide” and “War Damn Eagle” cranked up invoked fight or flight responses among the natives. I attended LSU, where we celebrated the annual Tulane University football slaughter by stealing that New Orleans university’s marble main gate sign & by selling “Tuck Fulane” bumper stickers.

I know sports rivalries as well as anyone, and I say that the mild interactions between UGA & Tech in all sports are schedule fillers, not hate filled rivalries. Where’s the animus, the vitriol? Why don’t bail bondsmen advertise fraternity specials for the weekend of the football game? Why don’t the referees have struggle to regain order when the team captains begin the violence at the coin toss rather than waiting for the kickoff? Why don’t bars have to identify themselves as gathering places for Dawg or Jacket fans, lest the supporters mix & tear up the place worse than Miss Kitty’s Longbranch on payday?

None of these things happen because UGA & Tech are two schools that play because of proximity & obligation, not because of rivalry or passion. There’s no harm in trying to foster rivalry, and I hope it catches on, but at this time it does not exist.
