Hate not too strong a word for Dogs-Jackets rivalry

The No. 15-ranked Diamond Dogs’ 7-5 win over No. 7 Georgia Tech in front of 24,665 fans Tuesday at Turner Field was big for a couple of reasons, despite being one of those late-season midweek nonconference games that don’t really affect either team’s postseason hopes.

First, it cemented Atlanta’s seven-year-old Spring Baseball Classic for Kids charity game as one of the nation’s best-attended college games, drawing the sixth largest regular season crowd in NCAA baseball history and the second largest crowd ever for the classic.

But more importantly to UGA fans, it was a win over our most hated rival and means the Dogs have won the last five classics in a row.

Any win over the insects, no matter the sport, is a big deal just because we hate them and they hate us. Whether it’s the “clean, old-fashioned hate” of sporting legend or the decidedly muckier version practiced by North Avenue posters to this blog, it still boils down to hate.

Too strong a word? Maybe back in my Dad’s era when a lot of UGA fans considered Tech the second state school and would root for them except when they played the Dogs. But in my lifetime the rivalry has sharpened to the point where most fans for each school take great delight in any misfortune that befalls the other. The combination of a Georgia win and a Tech loss (preferably a blowout) makes for the finest kind of fall Saturday.

Now I’m not saying that Tech is our biggest or most important rival, especially in football. That hasn’t been the case since the Jackets bolted from the SEC.

Just our most hated rival.

In my mind, our biggest rival (and one nearly as hated as Tech) is Florida. Especially in football, where the annual game in Jacksonville looms large in deciding the SEC East. And especially since the Spurrier era, when his obnoxious demeanor (and string of wins over the Dogs) let loose the inner jerk residing in most Gator fans. (I say most, not all, because my next-door neighbor the Gator is actually a really nice guy. Can’t say that about any Jackets fans I’ve known.)

So, as I’ve said before here, I’d list Tech and Florida as our top rivals, with Tennessee and Auburn in the next rank. (Once upon a time, Clemson was also at the top of that list, but we don’t play them that often any more.) While UT fans can be twice as obnoxious as Gator fans, particularly in Knoxville, that rivalry only really heated up when they became an every-year opponent in football and doesn’t yet match our thing with the Gators. Given a choice between beating either Florida or Tennessee in any given year, I think most fans would pick the Florida game in a heartbeat.

Auburn, of course, is our oldest rivalry, dating to 1892, and it’s an intense one for a lot of UGA fans, particularly those like my friends Steve and John who either have in the past or still live among the War Eagle types across the border. For many UGA fans, though, Auburn fans are more like our country cousins. The two schools share a lot of ties, have been known to hire each other’s graduates as coaches, and a lot of families are split, with grads from both schools.

So I don’t really hate Auburn. (”You wouldn’t feel that way if you ever had to live over there,” Steve told me recently when a group of us were discussing our most hated rivals. And I’m sure he’s right.)

Beyond that, I don’t think hatred is really a word that applies to our other rivalries. While Gamecock fans seem to spend the entire summer keying on their September meeting with the Dogs, those UGA fans who don’t live near or among the eternally optimistic South Carolina faithful attach importance to the game mainly as our SEC opener and usually the first real challenge of the season (though far from the biggest one). So that rivalry is bigger in Augusta than in Athens.

As for our other every-year opponents, Vandy and Kentucky, they’ve never been good enough on a consistent basis in football for much of a rivalry to develop. And in basketball, while Georgia fans pack the Steg every year when the Wildcats come to Athens, it’s more of a David vs. Goliath sort of scenario than a true rivalry.

And while our rotating games against teams from the SEC West are important, aside from our permanent opponent, Auburn, no true rivalry has developed. If we played Alabama more often, that rivalry would probably zoom to the top, especially with Nick Saban there, because their fans are, let’s face it, clinically insane. But I don’t think UGA fans really work up a true hatred for Bama, at least not one to match our big four. And whenever we’ve played LSU, I’ve found their fans to be among the most likable I’ve encountered. They’re good folks to tailgate with, and coming out of the Georgia Dome after the last time the Dogs whipped them in the SEC championship, I actually had several of them say, “Good game.” One Tiger fan even high-fived me when he said it.

If that ever happened with a Tech or Gator fan, I’d be so stunned I’d have to double-check the colors they were wearing.

Then I’d rush off to wash that hand.

Charlotte Jacket- I would also say it is a VERY good day for UGA when Tech fans are using their 7 game losing streak breaking 3 point victory as trash-talking material. Can you see the parallel there?

Thanks VoR, there is too much anger on some of these posts. Not that I have never been mad and talked too much crap, but I bet 89% never started as a senior on their High school football team and maybe 1% were on a college team of any type. It is fun but we need to realize we are talking to Moms, Dads, and Friends hiddend behind Screen names.

As a Jackets fan I absolutely love this rivalry, although I must admit I wish it would be a trifle less intense. I never miss the football game in the fall, and have noticed that as of late it has become hatred, and the attacks have become very personal. I wanted to vomit when grown men approached me and my son barking in our faces (and to be fair, I have seen Tech fans act egregious as well to a few U[sic]GA fans)… let’s not be so personal… I think the rivalry would be better off if the hate part was restricted to the gridiron. I’d rather drink a few brews with the guys wearing red as oppose to be wearing it!

I agree. I much prefer a good football discussion over an angry belittling of the other school and fans.

Wait a minute.. I thought all die hard UGA fans didn’t consider Tech to be a rival since you’ve won 7 of the last 8 football games. I can’t count how many posts I’ve read where UGA fans refer to this “dominance” and discount Tech as a true rival. But then in the same breath your fans quickly reference Florida as the #1 rival. Come again?? HUH?? Pot, meet kettle.

What?

RamblinWreck- I agree, yet in the same post that you talk of not being so personal and the rivalry being better left to the gridiron, you refer to our fine University as U(sic)GA.

Now for story time…

My uncle grew up a HUGE UGA fan, yet wanted to be an engineer so he decided to go to Tech. On the way as my dad was moving him to Atlanta he talked the whole way about how, although he was going to Tech, he would ALWAYS be a UGA fan. It took just one drunk obnoxious UGA fan barking at him and spilling beer on his head and he now not only hates UGA, but is a huge Tech fan. You can actually thank him for paying for much of the renovation to Bobby Dodd stadium.

I guess if you’re a Dawg living in Atlanta you hate the Jackets but being from south GA I’d say it has to be FL. I’ll be honest in all my 35 years I’ve only meet 2 Tech fans so growing up I didn’t know we were suppose to hate them. Truthfully for me it’s more about the state of GA looking good, therefor the Dawgs are my team but when Techs not playing us or the SEC I’m proud to say I pull for Tech.

Having been on both sides of this game. I wanted to be an engineer out of High School after attending UGA footballs games all my life. HOPE made GT the logical choice. I can say the GT fans were far more rude and disliked UGA far more. Some of the GT students did seem to hate UGA more than they liked GT.

Yes I transferred out of GT in good academic standing on schedule to graduate as a EE. The late 90s were not a good time to be into anything computer related and I hated the student life at Tech. I was going to Athens or Savannah every chance I could get. I know a few other High School friends who did the same and had better grades than I did.

If any single one of you went to the Tech/UGA game at Sanford stadium and wore Tech colors you would realize why Tech hates UGA so much. It’s downright dangerous for a Tech fan. Worst fans ever. Period. And I bet most SEC schools would agree. As a native Georgian and Tech grad I can proudly say that I hate the University of Georgia, always have, and just like my great grandfather, grandfather, and father have said, “To Hell with ‘em”.

Hypocrite, I don’t think you appreciate the irony in your own parrallel and how it is inconsistent. No one has advanced that UF considers us the biggest rival. They are the big dog right now. It’s for that very same dominance we don’t approach the Tech rivalry with the same fervor. Its not Dooley-Dodd days anymore.

Whatever. I’ve been to a lot of stadiums and rivalry games. I realize the difference between a regular conference game and a big rivalry game smart ass. I can handle a hostile environment, I love it, but the environment at Sanford for the Tech is beyond hostile. UGA fans have the worst “pack mentality” for any fan base I’ve ever seen. Just one of the many reasons why UGA is so easy to hate.

Reality Check

May 13th, 2009
4:44 pm

45-42= haha, Georgia State may have technically more students, but anyone with sense knows that UGA is the flagship University for the state of Georgia. You may be right, but outside of Atlanta I would say that for everyone one person from my high school that went to Georgia State there are ten that go to UGA. That is the measure of a flagship school, bringing students in from all over the state. Georgia State is primarily a commuter school pulling from metro atlanta. This is no knock on Georgia State is is a good school and serves a purpose.

I do agree it is more fun to consider the rivalry has been re-born. I would love for the games to have the importance of the mid 90’s Fla-Flast games. UGA fans know first hand to lose someone 9/10 or common we lived through that with Tenn during Goof/Donnan era and Florida still.

Huh?

May 13th, 2009
4:45 pm

Oh, and one other thing about Tech fans: They are liars. 99% of this stuff they say about outlandish UGA fan behavior is absolute hogwash. It didn’t happen and exists only in their imaginations. Why is it that Tech fans are so full of these UGA fan horror stories while we rarely hear much out of other fans that visit our stadium? Doesn’t it seem a little fishy? I think they make it up to justify their insane jealous rage of all things UGA. They need a boogey man.

c,

I will assume that your name is an initial signifying one of two nicknames you’ve earned. However, decorum and the AJC filter prevent me from suggesting what they are in this forum.

Whatever you might feel about your experience at Sanford, I would imagine that a survey of our SEC opponents fan bases would show quite different results. Every fan of other schools that I’ve talked to have enjoyed their Athens experience. Tech fans, no doubt, feel less welcome. If you wondering why that is it is because you are not. Stay home and watch on TV. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Failure to adhere could result in substantial psychological damage and perhaps, in merited circumstances, physical pain and suffering. Unfortunately, being a Tech fan, medical attention may not be immediately forthcoming as your convulsions may be confused with dancing. (Did anyone see the two male Tech fans dancing on TV last night? That was amazing. Truly amazing. Looked they they had epilepsy.)

My sister is a proud alumna of the university of georgia. I ,myself, am a proud student at the georgia institute of technology. I grew up rooting for both schools and still do. I have nothing against UGA other than this: I wanted to attend the university, but was waitlisted. I got into Tech early and had to sit on it for almost the entire year. My heart was set on UGA because it felt like home from my sister attending the fine school, but it was not best for me. I was not happy with the way the admissions department at UGA told me that I would receive a final decision in the mail and I never did. So thus, I enrolled in my new home on North Avenue. I have met some amazing friends there and it was for the best. I respect coach richt and johnson for their roles as men trying to lead others my age into adulthood as well. I just am disappointed for not being able to have the family legacy. Instead I have my own. I love tech and always will. My heart was broken by UGA this past summer and now I have it put together again by tech. I have seen both sides. The students of Tech want better fans to show up and have the passion of UGA fans. But we also are fans because we attend the school. I did not know what it would feel like to watch the UGA-Tech game alined anew, but it was fine. I was able to finally enjoy the game and not be stressed like so many UGA fans are. I only have this to say. I am proud of my Jackets for making it a rivalry and it made it poetic justice for me personally that they won. Now my sister and I have a friendly rivalry, but my love for what the schools represent will never change. I personally hate Fla and VT far more than I will ever hate UGA. I think tech should focus on its rivalries with miami, vt, and clemson more, because we are obsessed. I wish both teams well until november 28th. God Bless you all and take things less seriously. It is only a game.
