Dogs’ freshmen could have early impact

While fan talk in the wake of starting tight end Bruce Figgins’ suspension for half the season largely has centered on Orson Charles, the blue-chip receiver/tight end hybrid out of Tampa, the need to replace Figgins’ blocking skills seems to be weighing more on the Georgia coaches’ minds, as reported in the Athens Banner-Herald.

Mark Richt says both Charles and the other incoming freshman tight end, Arthur Lynch of Dartmouth, Mass., are “going to have to play. I doubt any tight end gets redshirted this year, but we’ll just have to wait and see how it unfolds.”

But Lynch, who tops 6-foot-5 and weighs 258, has the more typical tight end size and has been told by tight ends coach John Lilly to be ready to play as a “point of attack blocker and receiver” against Oklahoma State on Sept. 5. “He always said he expected me to play Oklahoma State, but now it’s even more of a reality,” Lynch told the ABH. “I know I’m the heaviest one there.”

Richt said he’s “a big, strong kid” who “I figure can block well for us, but again has good hands.”

As for 6-foot-3, 230-pound Charles, he could be used to shore up the Dogs’ rather skimpy corps of just six wide receivers. “Orson might be effective as a wide receiver, too, because he’s got wide receiver skills. He may be used in more than one way,” Richt said. The coach also mentioned incoming freshman cornerback Branden Smith, who “has got some abilities as a receiver. We’ll try to find a way to use those guys, too, to fortify that number.”

As for defensive end, where spring star Justin Houston will miss two games on suspension, Richt told the ABH he did not anticipate moving anyone to that position, but he noted that in the spring the Dogs already practiced having linebackers Darryl Gamble, Marcus Washington and Darius Dewberry line up as an end some of the time to bolster the pass rush.

On the other side of the ball, Richt talked with David Hale of the Macon and Columbus papers’ Bulldogs Blog about the need to get his backup quarterbacks some playing time this season. “You want to, but you’ve got to be careful of disrupting your starter and his rhythm,” Richt said.

Unfortunately, playing a tough nonconference schedule doesn’t help. “The best way to do it is if you play well enough, toward the end of the game you can get the guys some playing time. … But with our schedule, that doesn’t happen too often.”

As Joe Cox found out the past couple of seasons when he rarely got in to relieve Matthew Stafford.

Still, the fact that the backups, particularly Logan Gray, bring a different look than Cox might loosen up the typically tight, conservative way Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo have tended to use their quarterbacks.

“If there’s a way to insert a guy in a situation or a down-and-distance or field position, that might be part of what we’d do and it would be comfortable for everybody,” Richt said. “So that’s a possibility.”

Sounds promising, but Richt often talks a more adventurous approach than he actually uses in games. Here’s hoping he rolls the dice a bit more this season.

“Richt often talks a more adventurous approach than he actually uses in games.” Excellent point, Bill. That’s one reason why I don’t believe that Branden Smith will be lining up at receiver in 2009. We need to develop depth ASAP at the cornerback position, where Smith will be a starter in 2010. I do think Richt will let Smith play some offense AFTER he learns the defense, but that will take at least a full season.

Charles appears to be more useful in the slot like a Dallas Clark type TE. Definitely need Lynch and Ros as the inline blockers.

Johnny, i agree with not having smith as a receiver. We have 6, possibly 7 when you include Charles. However, i do feel Smith will be a starter this year in the secondary.

Whoever played TE and wore #90 in the spring game should be given some consideration for playing time. He made a couple of pretty good catches. And why don’t we hear anything about Bryce Ross figuring in for playing time? Did we burn a scolarship on him because his dad was a star on the national championship team in 80?

I don’t care if the puppies borrow Tony Gonzales they will still get beat in the opener by at least 10, and ofcourse the Gators will drop 50 on the pups. All in all it looks like a typical 4 loss season for uga

how many scholarship players who can play will we have on opening day? There is nothing wrong with burning scholarship on legacies, but when you add the number of knuckleheads on scholarship who will not play and then a few injuries, we probably will be down to 50 bona fide SEC players, including freshmen. Here is the problem with UGA trying to make a run at the MNC to satisfy all the 21st century nuveau fans. And don’t forget a really tough schedule. 7-5 would be a miracle!!!

Good for you Tim. Considering Coach Richt has 82 wins in 8 years, even you should be able to do the math and know that is not equal to a “typical 4 loss season”.

4 Losses typical, huh. I guess 1 in 7 years is typical to the tech fans considering their selective memory.

Lets see how they have fared:

Oh yes, a 4 loss season is the BEST SEASON TECH HAS HAD SINCE 2000 (a majority of them have been 6 losses).

And Florida, lets see here, have been far more used to having at least 4 losses over that time (4 in 7 years).

We just havent been able to beat them with any consistency. That has been UGA’s downfall. No doubt.

Hi,
Im tiny tim. I make up for my small carrot stub by going on blogs during working hours and talking sh!t about Georgia Football. Georgia is in competition for an SEC championship every season but for me that equates to 4 losses every year. I wish I was educated and had parents who love me, but they will never accept me blogging from their basement when I should be at work. God bless us, every one.

mark Richt will never be able to give a back-up QB subtanstial playing time, because he doesn’t believe in going for the jugular. No matter who UGA plays they never put the opponent away. Games are allowed to get to close and therefore back-ups are not aloowed to get any playing titime. Richt lacks a killer instinct.

good point. #90/walk-on was great in the spring game and looks like a good blocker

Orson Charles is the overall best athlete and would be a deceptive weapon either lining up at TE or they could spread him out in the slot during snap count which would screw up the defensive coverage. Just dont know anything about his blocking ability. Oklahoma st does not have a big defense, so at 230 Charles is big enough for that game.

We will be fine at TE. White is a better TE than Figgins and we will have to see about his blocking. White is a better athlete and motivated player.

There are a bunch of studs on this team that HAD to play last year due to the injuries, now all those guys will be back. What does that do? Creates some quality depth for us. Especially on the lines. We beat FL in 07 because we got after Tebow all day, look for that to happen again. He told Colt Brennan that we were the fastest defense he has ever seen.

There will no be no doubt that freshman will play, Brown, Smith, Charles.

Remember, let all the tards talk and we will see what happens in the fall. I like our chances because no one is giving us a shot.

12 NATIONAL TITLES – 21 SEC TITLES!!!

Will be interesting to see how all of this plays out for UGA:
1. Lynch looks like a bruiser – big – strong – point of the attack blocker. Will the offense stay to the run to protect Cox and the WR’s??? UGA is usally balanced – maybe 60/40 run to pass in 2009?

2. Charles is a WR is a big body – agree with the Dallas Clark statement. Would be great out of the slot.

3. Where does Ros play into all of this???

4. A post from the other day stated that Logan Grey really looked good this spring – does bring a new dimension.

One thing for sure is this – UGA will be playing and depending on a lot of youth – which will bode well down the road.

I think that UGA is an 8 game winner – your guys have a tough tough schedule and UGA 2009 kind of reminds of LSU 2008 – although you should have a slightly better QB.

KEYS to success in 2009:
1. Injury Free
2. Defense Ends (interior has potential to be very good)
3. Ball control (don’t see UGA offense lighting it up – this appears to built for a more wear them down attrition type of Offense – similar to Bama).

It seems like we’ve got a lot of positions where somebody needs to “step up.” I mean ALOT. The entire depth chart is littered with spots where somebody needs to “step up.” I’m just hearing alot of wishful thinking. I don’t know folks. The more I think about this season the more I believe it will be less than fantastic and I am very nervous about the fallout. I have never seen more whining out of Georgia fans than I have after last season and we won 10 flippin games. I can only imagine the river of tears that will be flowing if this team only wins 7 or 8 games. And don’t think for a second that it can’t happen. Some of you have become unbelievably spoiled.

rick, I got to agree with you. My sentiments exactly. Except for the last line. I don’t think Richt totally lacks a killer instinct he just doesn’t use it for some reason. He has done it in years past but I don’t think we can control both sides of the ball enough to do it anymore. Either the D is hurting or the O-line is shallow and hurting.

It’s funny to me how many florida and tech fans hang out on the UGA blogs. I live in the middle of gator country and couldn’t even tell you where their blogs are because I’m a Dawg fan and could care less what they are talking about on their blogs. Living in J’ville, FL I don’t expect to hear about or read about UGA much here, which is why I check out Dawg news here and not the times union website in Jax. That’s the great thing about the internet, regardless of where you live you can link up with people whom you share a common interest with.
As for tech fans a meaningful GT football blog makes about as much sense as an air conditioner does at the north pole.
If UGA is the “mid-tier, 4-5 loss, irrelavant program” you say it is then you have to ask yourself why do you care about the Dawgs and devote so much time to what’s going on with them if we pose no viable threat to your team?
Just a thought.
GO DAWGS!

Someone mentioned spoiled and that we are. it is evident by the comments that are always here. One year a guy coaches the #2 Defense in the country. The next year the offense and special teams give up two TD’s and we lose to the bugs by 3 and he’s an idiot who has got to go. Although he walked on water the year before. I’d say that is the sentiment of a spoiled brat.

Why is there so much concern over only having 6 wide receivers? For practice? By fall there will be 3 All American type WR on this team and that doesn’t include Charles or Michael Moore. So what is the big deal?

I see this year as a down year. I honestly believe in our conference you can lose 4 games and still have a very good team. Not saying that will happen. But next year will be a step up and if we can sign this RB from SC the years after next we will score at will.

Good comments BamaStan…pretty much hit the nail on the head. The game in Stillwater is so important, i think it’ll set the tone for our entire season. Gotta get a win out there, a blowout or last minute loss will take the wind outta this teams sails. No cupcakes early to iron out any execution problems. 1st 5 games Az.St. is prolly the weakest team we play & they all are capable of beating just about anyone any given week. Ok.St, S.Car, Ark, ASU & LSU. Long road trips to Stillwater & Fayetteville two of the first three weeks. DAWGS are gonna have to be in midseason form from game one this year. So many guy’s have to step up & be the man this year. I think we have the kids to do so, but this is one DAWG fan who’s gonna be on pins & needles when the season starts. Joe Cox & the DE’s have to play well from game one if we are gonna get to ten wins this season. I think the defense will be much better with the players we get back from injury (& Willie coaching for his job). Hopefully the rest of the summer will be quiet for the team & ACCPD…. G.A.T.A.!!!!!

Hey Tech and UF. You both have more 4 loss season than UGA dating back to 1964. Not good enough, date it back to 1974. Not good enough, date it back to 1984. Not good enough date it back to 1994. Get real. UF deserves to be complimented about the 3 championships in 14 years. Undisputed I might add. They play a tough schedule. GT one 1/2 or really 1/3 of one in 1990. They deserve to be complimented for that.

However, go to your own blogs and sling your trash. If you have one.

As far as tight end, we are in good shape, DE maybe a little touchy, but we do have some injured players coming back. QB, we will see. Aaron Murray looked real good in the Gday game. In fact the all did. Remember the tough schedule of OSU and ASU out of conference and the in conference schedule are killers. So much for anyone getting credit for playing a few tough games.

Huh?

Agree 100% Phil. We could be pretty good this year and still go 8-4. I don’t think alot of people, especially non-Georgia fans, fully appreciate what a remarkable job Richt has done to win 10 games per year over such an extended period of time. That is an extremely difficult thing to accomplish. He’s due for a bit of a letdown and I think this is the year. I just don’t see all this talent and depth that everyone speaks so fondly of, especially on defense. I do think its coming though. 2010-2012 should be big years if the shortsighted crybabies don’t freak out and fire Richt if we go 7-5 this year.

The problem is most of the UGA players are good enough to be recognized after they get to the next level. I don’t like either one of them and never will. Cole should have stayed at Rhode Island, and Q should have stayed on the Marlins. You still shouldn’t kick them when they are down. Says alot about your class, or apparent lack thereof.
