Dogs’ backup QB doubling at receiver?

Mark Richt has admitted that using Logan Gray on special teams last year slowed his development as a quarterback.  After spring practice, Gray is the leading candidate to be Joe Cox’s backup, and Richt has said that his staff might prepare a special package of plays to take advantage of Gray’s running ability at quarterback (which would fit in with No. 7 on my list yesterday of things I’d like to see this season: Gray inserted some of the time in the Red Zone).

But the coach apparently can’t quite let go of the idea that he needs to get Gray on the field even if he’s not behind center. Richt is quoted in the Athens Banner-Herald as saying, “We also think Logan is athlete enough to play a little bit of receiver, too, so that’s a possibility.”

As long as this doesn’t take away from Gray’s needed reps at quarterback in practice (and getting him some real game experience), it sounds like an intriguing idea. Sort of a Hines Ward type role. And who knows, if Aaron Murray comes on strong and challenges Gray for the backup spot this season, receiver might be Gray’s best shot at playing in the long run.

What do you think? Should Richt try to get Gray on the field, wherever, or should they just concentrate on developing Gray at QB?

Bulldog Bites: Sportsillustrated.com has come up with its post-spring practice Top 25, which makes about as much sense as any other pre-season ranking. They have the Florida Gators at No. 1, followed in the Top 10 by Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State (UGA’s opener), Ole Miss (apparently a rising media darling), Oregon, Ohio State and Alabama. Then TCU, Boise State and LSU. The Dogs are ranked 15th, one spot behind the Trade School. Encouraging summary, though: “After a year marred by season-ending injuries to key players (DT Jeff Owens, OT Trinton Sturdivant, among many others), the Bulldogs could be much better than expected in 2009.” You can check out the listing here.

After stumbling in another midweek game against Jacksonville State, the Diamond Dogs are beginning to look like they might have peaked too early this season. But they still lead Florida by a game in the SEC East and face the Gators in a sold-out three-game series in Athens beginning Friday night. The mandate from coach David Perno is clear: “There is an urgency to win this weekend.”

Wow Bill, Logan Gray at wideout, in the slot on the goal line, what an advantage we have in the SEC. What a freak of an athlete, Logan Gray.
With Logan Gray, we have a weapon that will finally have us sweep the East and get in the title game w/o some help.

What this may be about, especially if we sign a top-qb this year, is that Richt sees Aaron Murray as being the guy in 2010, so we might as well try to find Gray a role. He may see Aaron backing up Cox this year as well. Whether that is CMR’s thinking or not I do think that Murray beats out Gray next spring.

Starting the season playing a top ten team, on the road, will tell us a lot about the Dawgs. Having Joe Cox and Logan Grey on the field together in the redzone sounds exciting as hell and I bet strikes fear in the teams we will play.Great job Bill, keep it up.

Let’s just put the best 11 on the field that gives us a chance to score. If Logan is one of those he should get his chance to compete whether it is as a QB, WR, Punt returner, wildhog, third down specialist or redzone specialist.

Something about this does not smell right. All we hear out of Athens is what a great athlete Logan is and we’ve got to get him on the field. He looked pretty dang good in the spring game. I say Richt made his mind up about Cox JUST BECAUSE HE’S A SENIOR. aka Joe T III. Will the Dawgs have the best QB staring this year ?

I think Logan Gray is the best qb we have on the team! So not only should he NOT b at wideout, I fully believe by the 4th or 5th game he’ll be the starter anyway. I do like Cox’s leadership, and there’s not doubt about his loyalty but at some point talent has GOT to win out! I’m not there everyday like those coaches are, and clearly they’ve forgotten more than I’ll ever know about the sport of football but as a open mided college football fan Logan Gray was the best qb on the field at the G-Day game. That was ’nuff said n my book, Gray’s the top dawg until somebody can unseat him.

score early and score often. i think logan is too good of an athlete to be left out of the offensive equation somewhere. I don’t know if that’ll included more snaps at qb or elsewhere, but the guy can play football. just gotta make sure he’s not riding the bench waiting on joe cox to get injured or screw up.

I too liked Logan better than Cox in the spring game, but let’s remember that it was the “spring game”. We don’t know what the coaches’ agenda was for that game. Did they call the better plays for Logan? Did they want to get a look at Logan or Cox in certain formations or with certain personnel groupings? Did they hold Cox back so as not to show their hand? I don’t think we can take too much from the results of that game.

WalkerMuhDawg….USC is ranked high every year because they have proven time and time again that when their stars leave, they have 3 other stars to take their place and the coaches to take advantage of that talent. That’s why UGA is ranked #15 even though they’ve lost their starting QB and starting RB in the 1st round of the NFL draft and had a bunch of others drafted. Programs like USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, and to a certain extent UGA (and I’m saying this as a GaTech fan) remind me of a shark’s mouth. They may lose a tooth, but there’s another row of sharp ones to take its place.

Gray was one of the top five qbs coming out of high school. He has paid his dues and deserves a chance to play qb. In the red zone or what ever you want to call it now, I think he gives us more options than Cox.Of course, I would put Munz,Chapas and two tight ends in, and dare anybody to stop us.

My big question is, will the team rally behind Cox or will they wait for one of the new guys(Gray or Murray) to take control. Some of you think this season will be like Shockley taking over and some think it will be like Tereshinski.Bill, give us some insight.

Houston Nutt walked into a good situation; he arrived just as Orgeron’s recruits were ready to blossom. Their record was not a fluke, and they can be a good team this year. However, all these “experts” are looking at how much improvement Ole Miss showed between 2007 and 2008, and they’re expecting the momentum to carry into this year. In reality, I don’t see why Ole Miss should show more improvement this year than half of the other SEC teams.

Gray on the field other than at quarterback? I will believe it when I see it. After all, CMR had another “all world” player and he only allowed him to play at the quarterback position, when this player most likely could have played well at any of the offensive skill positions. That player was DJ Shockley. What a waste of an outstanding college football player.

Gray has been looking very good. IMO he should be the starter in ‘10 and Murray should be redshirted. I am not yet sold on Murray he strikes me as one of the many FSU QBs that were highly hyped, coaches think can do it but never lives up to it. Hopefully I am wrong. Gray is a team player and should have every shot of being the starting QB. You could do some really interesting trick plaays with him as a WR and you could take Durham’s roll as long as it does not eat into his development as QB.

The reason USC is still ranked high is because the people who rank the teams want their rankings to be similar at the end of the year as the beginning. Since USC plays a cupcake conference, the chances of them having a good record and still being ranked highly at the end o the year are good.

It was a SPRING game. Gray made alot more good looking plays because he was in the game more and was given more opportunity. Cox ran a very vanilla offense except the flea-flicker and the HB pass to him, all of which he did very well. You guys act as if Cox was missing targets and getting sacked and dropping the snaps or something. He simply didn’t show out because he wasn’t given the opportunity. A running QB is more exciting to watch as well which only makes Gray stand out in everyone’s mind more.

Dave in Tampa, UGA has a very good problem to have. Too many very good qb’s. I have all the faith in the world in all of em’ but I believe Gray is a little better. The only reason Cox is no.1 right now is because he’s a senior. Richt rewards loyalty and Cox could have transferred to another big time program, but he didn’t. If he makes too many mistakes though, Gray will be the man quickly with a dose or two of Murray to get his feet wet.

I just think we are better off without Stafford & Morreno. I liked them both, but neither displayed any leadership skills. I read a post earlier that I agree with 100%. billdawgdodo– first of all vasselates is not a word. Maybe you meant vacillates. If you are going to try and use big words, at least spell them correctly. Secondly, I have never heard of a QB being “ruined” by playing special teams for one season when he had no chance of playing QB. Also, who knows whether or not Knowshown would have been as good without that redshirt year, don’t speculate. Uga can’t coach up talent? How about coaching up the number 1 and 12 picks in this years draft. How about 10 wins seasons every year? How about top 10 rankings virtually every year under Richt? UGA is the preseason number 15 (which means nothing) and that is the first time they have been that low in years, don’t speculate and if you do, base it on facts and common sense. Richt will not win a NC at UGA because you wrote it huh? I’m sorry that I can’t put much faith in that (based on your other ignorant nonsense). If Paul Johnson plays for or wins a NC before Richt, then good for him. I highly doubt that will happen coming from an ACC team, but anything is possible so I won’t make any bold predictions. Yet, I will say that by your post it is safe to bet that you are an uneducated moron and I hope that people like yourself go the path of the last “dodo”

Voice of Reason is…well…the voice of reason here. If I remember correctly, the G-Day game was nationally televised. If the game plan for Cox could be considered vanilla, I was hoping for no flavor at all. Why show what you’ve got? Throw out a bunch of formations out there and let Gray run and make plays with his feet all the while letting Cox do nothing. The most exciting plays in the G-day game were Gray’s and that tiny running back running around. Hopefully not plays that other teams (who were watching) could schematically plan to defend. Were you clowns expecting the coaches to show the whole playbook, score loads of points, and ruin the defense’s shaky confidence…all to impress a could-be recruit for the 2015 class that lives in Wyoming?

I don’t care who they line up at receiver as long as they catch the balls thrown their way. That would be a nice change of pace.

However, there happened to be 25 players who did not participate along with the rest of the 2009 recruiting class who will arrive this summer. All that being the case, when the 2009 Georgia Bulldogs hit the field in Oklahoma in September, they will be a different team than what we all saw last year and definitely different from what we all saw at G-Day.

That didn’t work to well with A.J. Bryant. He was AAA Offensive Player of the Year and a top 10 nationally ranked QB. Moved him to WR, became injury plagued and didn’t do squat. Hate the idea. If he’s such a freak of an athlete stick his a$$ at QB where he can touch the ball every single down!!! That is you know…HIS NATURAL POSITION!!!! mreatside73- I must’ve missed the joke. Logan Gray is white. As far as the DJ reference to salvage the season, he played behind the all-time winningest QB in college football history. He didn’t “salvage” anything. He only played sparingly and then started every game he was healthy for during his senior year. Either i’m misunderstanding you or you don’t know $hit about what you speak.

braveshater– stick with baseball. You see, a football team can only play one person at QB at a time. If you want someone else to be used in the game then you have to use them at another position. The faster and more athletic guys are typically used at Reciever (that’s the guys that catch the ball and line up on the outside of the formation). Its really a pretty easy game to understand. I’d be careful taking too much from a G-Day game, due to format and mixes of O’s and D’s when particular players are at particular positions. It’s a “simulated” game situation but there are reasons why players are in certain depth chart spots. We too quickly assign emotional motives to coaches when, as someone pointed out, we’re not there every day at practice.

Why people are so ready to dismiss Joe Cox is a mystery to me. He was one of the most highly ranked and recruited QBs in the nation coming out of H.S. and there were plenty of comments last season that he was a better leader and a far more accurate passer than Stafford.

Where’d the love go? Or is it just the natural tendancy to look for a “magic” answer when it’s not nearly that simple. I have not been in the huddle with Joe Cox but I hear it’s a good place to be. I, for one, would like to see what the players are talking about (and the coaches) before reaching for another rabbit in the hat to Out-Tebow Tebow (which, I suggest, is a pipe dream — I don’t like UF — who could but their mamas — but Tebow is one of a kind).

Someone suggested UGA put the best 11 on the field. I think the coaches might have thought of that one. We’d be better off starting a Joe Cox fan club than arguing about who’s going to replace him 5 minutes into the season.

A.J. Bryant was actually an ATH when we recruited him. Meaning he played QB in high school but wasnt projected there. Gray was a top 11 QB prospect, but may have had that slash ATH for whatever that is worth. A lot of high schools put their best talent at QB. Tim Wansley was like the QB, receiver, RB, punter, punt returner and CB. Heck he probably played safety.

I was glad to be surprised to by DJ. If DJ stayed healthy UGA had great chances of beating UF, Auburn, and if UGA won those a shot at the BCS title. I wish DJ could win a starting job in the NFL and wanted to see him start after Vick was gone. Just for the record I was a Randal Cunningham fan too.

Tubbs said that DJ had a habit of telephathing his passes(which he did) and that he was good for a sure 1 to 2 turnovers per game(which he was). And it turned out Tubbs was right. Did no one not notice the way he stared down receivers a la the Florida game, giving the D ample opportunity to make up ground and make the pick. He had a terrible habit of just locking onto one receiver. And while I despise Tubberville he was right. DJ was good for a guaranteed 1 to 2 turnovers a game solely attributable to him only.

If the coaches want to get Logan on the field because of his athletic ability, I say go ahead, jsut don’t overdo it. He should be used in special packages and such so as to minimize possibility for injury in case Cox goes down.

CHARLOTTE DAWG

April 30th, 2009

The best thing that can happen to the UGA football program is for Cox to be the man this year, Gray to be the man next year, and either Murray or Mett the following. Why? B/c it shows we are officially elite. Why? b/c we just reload. We are not there yet but perhaps we are approaching that level.

The best example of programs that do this are USC and Spurrier’s Florida GAtors from the past. The frosh and soph’s usually did not play. They developed, learned the system and were the man when they became upper classmen.

When a program is having to consider playing freshman, the QB part of the program is obviously not in good hands and someone left the pantry empty when recruiting for the future. It can work out in the long run(Stafford) but it makes for some frustrating times for a while(2006-KY and Vandy).

So I hope Cox is the man this year, and Gray the next. Of course, I hope they are the man b/c they are flat out better than the youngsters. If not, that’s why the coaches make the big bucks.

If we get to this point, it could help us in recruiting too. It wouldn’t help us recruit an all world hot shot that has a big head and thinks the world owes him something. We don’t want guys like that. It would however, get us QB recruits that have talent, a positive attitude and ones that give two $hits about the G on their helmet…not getting paid! Getting paid takes care of itself if you are good enough.

Pete Carroll is doing something right and I think Richt is getting us there.

Logan Gray in 2010 for the SEC! Let’s also use him quite a bit this year but if Joe stumbles, our team will stumble. Everyone should be pulling for Joe in 2009!

Cox is the starter because he deserves it and it makes sense. He’s got the maturity, the skill and the leadership. It’s his job to lose. Naturally CMR will prepare Gray by giving him some snaps under center to build for next year. Gray may also be used as needed to get his talent and speed on the field but only when necessary. If Cox falters then we will see Gray.

It’s called sound fundamental coaching.

To coach Pajamas over at Tech, if you have trouble following this logic, give CMR a call.

Erk was there in 79 when we lost 6 games including a shellacking to nobody VA at homecoming. Why is it that he is the reason for the NC? CWM team defense only gave up 31 points to the Trade School. Stafford scored one TD for the bees and then the special teams gave them another one. I fail to see the logic that Erk was the savior and Martinez the goat when we were #2 in the Nation for defense year before last.

Well, CMR is considering Logan Gray at wide reciever? WTF Has he lost all since of reason? Go across the middle take a shot and you have lost your#2 and whaT i CONSIDER your #1 quarterback. Where will that lead us? The in coming freshman are not ready. Looks like the coaching staff are already scratching their heads as to what to do. I to was at the spring game and Gray was the most ready to play. Sure CMR is going to start COX out of this loyalty thing BUT please look at reality. Logan Gray gives us the best chance to win.
