All-time favorite Dawgs

I was particularly interested to see current Bulldog Jeff Owens writing on his blog last week about his top five all-time favorite UGA football players, as I’d recently gone through a similar exercise while putting together my bio for the “new look” Blawg. (Just click on “About Bill King” over on the right-hand side of the page to check it out.)

It’s not as easy as it sounds, particularly if you’ve been following the Dawgs as long as I have. Jeff’s five favorites were Herschel Walker, Knowshon Moreno, David Pollack, Champ Bailey and Greg Blue, two of whom he played with.

Now I don’t know Jeff’s criteria, but for my favorites list I didn’t necessarily think about who were the greatest, best or most valuable players, though those adjectives certainly apply to most of the folks I ended up picking. Instead, I went with those players that I felt a special affinity for during their Georgia playing days and continued to follow in years after. I ended up with seven favorites for my list: Fran Tarkenton, Lynn Hughes, Andy Johnson, Herschel Walker, Hines Ward, David Greene and Mohamed Massaquoi.

Tarkenton I picked because he’s the first Georgia Bulldog I really knew anything about when I was a kid and I followed him during his many years as a record-setting QB in the NFL. Plus he was from Athens, my hometown.

Lynn Hughes became a favorite of mine during Vince Dooley’s first season in Athens when he shared the quarterbacking duties with Preston Ridlehuber. Later, he switched over to defense, where he starred at safety. He played hard and was willing to do whatever the coaches asked of him. Another connection: I was his paperboy, delivering The Atlanta Journal to him when he lived in the Town House apartments on Lumpkin Street near Five Points. (I remember I didn’t want to cash the first check he wrote for me because it had his “autograph” on it, but my banker Dad told me that didn’t make any business sense.)

Andy Johnson was another Athens boy and one I went to school with from seventh grade on. We played touch football together in junior high and he went on to be the star QB for the Athens High Trojans, leading our team to a state co-championship with Valdosta in 1969. Andy also was an extremely talented baseball player (he played for the Dawgs and could have signed with MLB) and played basketball and ran track in high school, too. He was one of the most talented athletes I ever saw and he’s also a really nice guy.

Herschel, well, he’s everybody’s favorite. No need to spell out why he made my list, except to say what a sheer pleasure it was to watch him run during his days at Sanford Stadium. The greatest.

Hines Ward was another versatile player who did whatever was asked of him, including playing hurt, while at tailback, quarterback and wide receiver during his time in Athens. A classy guy who’s gone on to NFL success with a Super Bowl MVP award.

David Greene was the coolest quarterback I’ve ever seen, maintaining his composure even when he didn’t have much of an offensive line in front of him. He also was the most adept at faking the handoff I’ve ever seen and could make some of the prettiest, most precise passes imaginable. Another classy guy and the winningest QB in NCAA history. I really enjoyed talking with him last summer in advance of the Countdown to Kickoff event.

Mohamed Massaquoi turned heads as a freshman with his acrobatic, nearly impossible catches. I not only appreciated his talent, I liked his attitude, especially when he went through a rough patch with drops and some elements of fandom started booing him. He bounced back with many more game-changing catches and also served as a mentor to A.J. Green during his senior year. Another classy guy.

If I’d had to pad my favorites list out to a Top 10, it would have been tough narrowing it down from so many over the years, but I’d have to go with Jake Scott, everybody’s favorite bad boy during his years at UGA; Kevin Butler, our greatest placekicker and a funny guy on the radio; and Champ Bailey, an incredible two-way star in an era of specialization. But there are lots of others whose names come to mind, including Pat Hodgson, Buzy Rosenberg, Richard Appleby, Scott Woerner, Terry Hoage, Buck Belue, Bill Goldberg, Richard Tardits, Garrison Hearst and David Pollack.

Feel free to share your all-time Bulldog favorites …

BULLDOG BITES: My brother Jon and my son both were at Saturday’s meet at a packed Stegeman Coliseum where the Gym Dogs mopped up the floor with the Florida Gators. (Parking was nearly impossible to find, they said.) Just as my brother, a longtime Gym Dogs fan, told me earlier this season, Suzanne Yoculan’s last team seems to rise to the occasion when they face top competition. Which is what top teams in any sport must do. … Speaking of top teams, the Diamond Dogs are off to a blazing start, having swept a three-game series out at Arizona this weekend, outscoring the Wildcats an aggregate 33-14. The Dogs, with their best start since 2000 at 8-0, return to Foley Field at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Wofford.

1. Preston Ridlehuber – the reason my son wears #12 to this day. A great DAWG on Dooley’s early teams
2. Ronnie Jenkins – just a South Georgia boy who loved football and the University and did not take himself too seriously
3. Andy Johnson – same reason as Bill.
4. Larry Rakestraw – 1st great DAWG QB I can remember. Listened to him and Georgia beat Miami and George Mira one Friday night on the radio.
5. David Greene – the drought breaker. Paas to Johnson on 4th down to win the 1st SEC Championshio in too long.
These and others are why i as a semi mature mid 50’s male with grown children still let a bunch o 18-21 year olds determine my mood and feelings every fall.

It’s hard to leave out D.J. Shockley in any list of favorite dawgs. He waited 4 years to have a shot at a job he could have had at 98% of the Division I schools all along. All he did was be a team guy and keep his head up. The fact he was able to win an SEC championship as the starting quarterback in his only starting season was especially sweet. He will always be in my list of top dawgs for his unselfish attitude.

3. Herschel: might be the all time greatest college football player and is hard to leave out of your top UGA players.
2. Knowshon Moreno: Not because he was such a talented back. Not because he could do the superman. It is because this kid as so much drive in him. He has one of the strongest competitive streaks i have ever seen. Truly a damn good dawg.
1. David Pollack: Any UGA fans ever wonder what it would be like to have tebow on your team? Well you did a few years ago except he didn’t play QB. He was as much of a leader on and off the field as you could ask for. He had a motor that never stopped. He had just as much or more heart than tebow (minus all the crying). This guy is what the game is all about. He is a textbook example of what we want our athletes to look and act like and it makes you proud to be a dawg fan. In my mind nobody can touch Pollack.

1. Hines Ward- Forest Park High. I’ve grew up in Forest Park.

3. Robert Edwards – would have won the Heisman if not for breaking his foot.
4. David Pollack- Simply put he made plays.
5. Torin Kirtsey- Lol, skinny dude. I always liked his running style.

Hey ole Buzy lives about two miles from me on the beaches here in Jacksonville! He is the most unassuming guy you would ever meet. Most of these UF clowns hardly know who he is. But would you expect any less from a school that likes to claim they invented football going back to the 1980’s. That being said here are my top 5

Really hard to pick five!!!

Have to give some respect to some legends before my time:

Frank Sinkwich, Charlie Trippi, Bill Stanfill, Jim Wilson

How about Ben Zambaisi!!, Eddie Meat Clever Weaver, Jimmy Payne, Willie McClendon, Jimmy Poulas or Gliding Glenn Harrison, and of course Andy Johnson. Jake Scott – what a badass!!!

How about Washington to Appleby??? or was it Appleby to Washington!!!??

Speaking of favorites – how about overachievers like Verron Haynes!!!

Loved Hines Ward – playing QB with broken wrist in the Peach Bowl – in pain the entire game just holidng onto his wrist. Tough as nails – ultimate team player – outstanding blocker as a WR.

Mr Cool himself – David Green. Best QB I have witnessed in Athens.

Pollack, Walker, Belue, Lindsy Scott, Lindsey Scott, Lindsy Scott!!!

Hope this jars your memory of some dame good dawgs!!

Wow! There’s been so many great Dawgs over the years, so it’s hard to narrow it down to just 5. I’ll take a swing at my personal favorites…

1) David Pollack – THE best defensive player in UGA history & 1 of the best in SEC history.
2) Terry Hoage – One of the best all-around football players in UGA history.
3) Knox Culpepper – Underrated workhorse. I’ll never forget the game he racked up a slew of tackled (18?) against Tech @ Grant Field.
4) Brannan Southerland – Talented yet grossly underused (the last 2 season)
5) Bill Goldberg – An animal in the trenches & (eventual) WCW & WWE Heavyweight “Wrasslin” champ. Very good athlete with unmatched intensity.

Herschel, David Pollack, David Green, Ray Goff, DJ Shockley, Matt Stinchcomb, Meat Cleaver, Hines Ward, Bill Hartman, Terry Hoage, Rodney Hampton, Champ Bailey, Richard Tardits…the list is just to long. All of these were class acts, leaders, had heart, made plays and loved UGA.

Herschel was simply the best. Pollack was the motivator and never quit. David Green was by far the best QB (not the most talented just the best). Left out Thomas Davis, a heck of hitter and did he ever make some hits. Stinchcomb, was awesome on the O-line. I could go on and on…

All of the players of the 1957 team. They were the team that broke the drought against tech, and I was at the game in Atlanta. Also, all the players from the 59 team that won the Orange bowl. I was also at that game. We beat Missouri. I agree with NFLDAWG though, Jake Scott was one of the greatest DAWGS ever.

Herschel is a given, but among the rest, my favorite is Terry Hoage. I was at the 3 interception game, against Vandy (81 or 82?).

Dooley called him the greatest defensive player he ever coached – high praise considering he coached Bill Stanfill and Jake Scott. That’s Hoage has to be one of the greatest defensive football players in college football history, period. 13 interceptions in a single season is mind-blowing, especially considering that the SEC was still an I-formation, run-first conference in the 80s.

Even more remarkable, Hoage ran the 40 in 4.7, which is slow at that level. He still played 13 years in the pros. He was so smart he was never out of position. I doubt I’ll see a better one in my lifetime.

Ed – Good commentary on Hoage. IMO, he was the best DB in GA history & top 5 best defensive player. While he might not have had “blazing” 40 y/d speed, he was a tremendous athlete indeed!

Ed

Correction – Hoage had 12 picks that year. He also had 8 interceptions for Philadelphia in ‘88 playing as a nickel back.

David Pollack would be a close second on the defensive side. I have doubts as to whether Willie Martinez is the answer for UGA’s defensive issues, but Willie didn’t have Pollack when he was the d-coord., either. Pollack was so disruptive of the other team’s offense, he made the coaches look good. The only def. lineman I can think of with a blocked punt and multiple interceptions.

Tough list to make. I’ll limit it to players around during my lifetime (with one big exception):

1) Herschel- I feel like his aura still hovers over Sanford, so I’ll give him number 1. Watching videos of his playing days are simply unbelievable; truly a once-in-a-100-years type of player.
2) DJ Shockley- Here’s a guy who was the top QB recruit in the nation, but came to Athens and sat on the bench for 4 seasons when he could have started anywhere else. When his chance finally came, he led us to a championship.
3) David Pollack- No explanation really necessary. Having him on the D-Line was simply poison for offenses; if they double-covered Pollack, someone else would sack the QB.
4) Boss Bailey- Boss was a true leader on defense and had the highest jump of anyone I’ve ever seen. I can’t even count how many times he blocked punts or kicks in 2002. It was a sad day in the Classic City when Boss left- no more Baileys.
5) David Greene- I’ve always been a huge David Greene fan. Truly a class act on and off the field, he brought Georgia the first title since before I was born. Nothing rattled him either, which is highly admirable in the SEC.

Bill King, sir, you don’t have to get testy about the fact that you did leave off all the more meaningful Georgia Bulldog players of all-time, and included far lesser players.

This is why we say you left them off. Your list is the worst list of everyone who bothered to correct you Bill King.

How’s the frisbee intramural going you bragged about playing in here Bill King, sir ? Why don’t you try to convince us all again how meaningful and important intramural frisbee is instead of trying to defend your pitiful list of all-time favorite Georgia Bulldogs ?

Gee, Thomas, sorry the concept of “favorite” is beyond you. Not greatest. But favorite. I think if you read the column, I explain why those particular players are personal favorites.

Actually, I’ve never played intramural frisbee. I assume you’re having an inaccurate half-memory of me once writing about my son playing on the UGA Ultimate Frisbee team. It’s a club team, not intramural. It’s like hockey, lacrosse, other nonvarsity sports played by UGA students. I’ve an idea … why don’t you head over to the intramural fields sometime and tell those guys that their sport isn’t worth mentioning.

Two of my favorites are unknowns to many. Varnado and Lawhorne on Defense. They lept over the line in unison to meet Casey, the Miami fullback, headon at the 1-yd line and prevent a TD. All three lay on the ground stunned or knocked out, but Casey didn’t score. What was so special about a great D play? Casey was unstoppable and hugh. Varnado and Lawhorne met him helmet to helmet. Lawhorne had earlier been selected as a Rhodes Scholar and sacrificed his head and body for the Dawg cause. Varnado, Lawhorne and Casey had to be helped off the field after the play. But Casey didn’t score because two Dawgs forbid it. Sometimes they should show old film and plays to our players today. Oh, Lawhorne became a surgeon and practiced in Sylvester and Albany, Ga.

Thanks to Ogeechee Dawg for listing Ben Sambisi (SP?). Anyone who ever saw him play would have to list him. He was so much fun to watch. Certainly not the best Dawg to play in Samford, but clearly one of the top three on the fun to watch scale. I put him right up there with Herschel and Jake Scott and David Pollack. Hey Daniel #12 …… agree with ya there. In my 50’s & letting 18 – 22 yr olds affect the weekend mood. Guess some things never change. Picking Herschel as # 1 of course, but can’t choose 2 – 5 out of the hundreds of players ( OK, could but I’m lazy at the moment ). One name that comes to mind is ” Glidin’ ” Glynn Harrison ….. loved watching him run in the mid-70’s. And Kent Lawrence ……..
A fun thing …. I head-up the Dawg fan club here in Houston & this past season, we had Rodney Hampton join the group. Gotta love those Saturdays we all get to be young again, huh.
