Time’s up for Falcons: They need to win in postseason now

Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff understand they're being judged on playoffs now. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff know they're being judged on playoffs now. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

FLOWERY BRANCH – When Falcons coach Mike Smith was asked this week whether he could sense when a team was ready to take the next step, he gave a long, winding answer that never really arrived at “yes” or “no,” even if he spoke in well-crafted sentences.

It reminded me of middle school when I was faced with an essay question that I didn’t know the answer to, which led to something like, “The Taft-Hartley Act is considered one of the most important documents in history, written half by Taft and half by Hartley, both of whom were fine, distinguished gentlemen who liked to wear suits, and this had a big impact on the United States of America! You’re my favorite teacher! Oh, look at the birdies …”

This was Smith, on whether he knows when a team is ready to take the next step, or possibly the Taft-Hartley Act: “We feel very good about what we’ve accomplished thus far this year. We have expectations. We set our goals, and we’ve been clicking along pretty well this season. I like the way that we’ve played through the first season. The second season is getting ready to start, and I know that we respect everybody that’s in this tournament because they’ve fought very hard to get in it.”

I’ll answer for him: No.

I’ll also answer for general manager Thomas Dimitroff, who, in trying to avoid anything close to state-of-the-Falcons questions this week, has decided to make himself unavailable to the media: No.

In the NFL playoffs, there’s a tendency to handicap teams not by records, statistics or talent, but by resume. New England and Green Bay are feared. They’ve won Super Bowls. The Falcons are not. They scored two points in the Meadowlands.

In their past three playoff seasons, the Falcons went 11-5, 13-3 and 10-6. They lost their first playoff game each year, in stunning, increasingly humiliating fashion: 30-24 (Arizona), 48-21 (Green Bay) and 24-2 (New York Giants). In all three years, they were confident. In all three years, they thought, “We can do this.” They didn’t.

So now we watch again. A talented, confident, 13-3 Falcons team, following the luxury of a week off that’s afforded a No. 1 seed, faces Seattle at the Georgia Dome on Sunday. There’s a public concern because the Seahawks are hot.

But really, that’s not what this is about. This game is not about what the Seahawks are, but rather what the Falcons have been.

This is a one-game pass-fail test. It’s important to Dimitroff, the architect of this otherwise wonderful, five-year franchise makeover, who made the decision to make few roster changes from last season’s team until the late trade for cornerback Asante Samuel (a familiar face from their New England days).

It’s important to quarterback Ryan, who could be excused for getting outplayed in the postseason by three Super Bowl quarterbacks (Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning), but probably not so quickly if he loses to a rookie (Russell Wilson).

It’s important to Smith, who likely will catch more heat than anybody — yes, even more than Ryan — if the Falcons lose this game.

The people who claim Mike Smith absolutely gets fired if the Falcons lose this game are wrong. So are the people who say Mike Smith absolutely would not get fired. Fact is, we don’t know. That’s one man’s decision, and regardless of what that one man, owner Arthur Blank, might say now, even he can’t imagine the difficulty of processing another defeat and where that would lead him. We’re talking about one of the more emotionally invested owners in sports.

But there are several good signs for the Falcons (notwithstanding the season-ending stink bomb against Tampa Bay). They seemed hardened by the criticism. There was less celebrating this season after victories. There’s a swagger on defense — certainly in the secondary with Samuel, Dunta Robinson, William Moore and Thomas DeCoud — that wasn’t evident before.

This has been Ryan’s best season. His completion percentage (68.6), touchdown total (32) and rating (99.1) all were career bests.

But the Falcons’ biggest step forward this season probably came in game-planning and decision-making by the coordinators. Mike Nolan (defense) and Dirk Koetter (offense) have been superior to their predecessors (Brian VanGorder and Mike Mularkey), in terms of motivating players and putting them in positions to succeed.

Smith said, “We’re a much more mature team because of our experiences. I think you learn from your previous experiences in the playoffs.”

We’ll soon find out. Because if they lose again, there’s a very good chance the changes would not be small.

This is the year for post season success. Maybe even a SB (not saying it).
Home field advantage throughout, SB in New Orleans Superdome. (very familiar place)…and desperation, which is not a bad thing.
(FYI, next year’s superbowl is in freagin new york. And nobody believes the any warm weather team will win there)

Smitty is going to have to win this game for his job, I feel. Not the Super Bowl, just this first playoff game. The fans are expecting improvement, so is Blank. Doesn’t seem to me like Smith has a job if they lose.

Win and we still probably won’t get any Rodney Dangerfield “respect.” But allow a rookie/5ft 10inch/
one year of college led football teams having to travle transcontinent twice in literally 7 days come in here and beat the Falcons and they will RICHLY DESERVE any and all criticism that comes their way along with the 20 year national media setback which will undoubtedly ensue. And yeah, go ahead and try to build a billion stadium and impose PSL’s on us fans in the lose. LMFAO on that one. I’ll be there, I’ll be partying my tookus off and being as obnoxious (but legal) a fan as humanly possible, but I swear by all the gods in Valhalla if they lose I’m done. Caput. No mo. The irony of the situation is, if the Falcons do lose and Smith is fired, who do you replace him with that’s going to improve this team’s postseason chances? I mean, Smith never has had a losing season with the Falcons, which is more than any previous coach can say. And any coach coming in would be under that same scrutiny, not so much about regular season success as how soon they could get that elusive playoff win.

I know that if Mike Smith became available he’d be snapped up by any of the teams with head coaching vacancies instantly. As frustrating as the lack of postseason success has been thus far, I really believe the Falcons and their fans would be better served by weathering the storm and keeping Smith on board regardless of the upcoming game’s outcome. Because for all the “has never won in the postseason” hoopla, it’s not a matter of “if” but a matter of “when”.

If and that’s a big if, but if they lose, I think Smith may be safe but litle Tommy Dimitroff may not be. His draft busts and lack luster weak draft choices, his Ray Edwards, and Curtis Loftin personnel moves will be his undoing. Weak lines on bothe sides of the ball, no signs of a young strong running back in the picture, no middle linebacker to stop the run game, will be questions that Mr Blank will want answers too And little Tommy will have no answers to give.

Jeff Schultz, the only way Smith ever gets shown the door is by laying a Jim Mora the elder egg in the playoffs. I don’t mean a 24-2, I mean 41-0 come to meeting revelation like the one that got Mora shown the door in Indy… That is highly unlikely, nevertheless if they come out and the Seahawks work them, I would’t want to be in the after-season assessment meeting…

I think the Falcons win this weekend because Matt Ryan is better this year at throwing down the field than he has been in previous years. But if the Falcons lose, they would be foolish to fire Mike Smith. The Falcons have been winning in the regular season the last few years more because of execution than talent, and you can see that reflected in stats like fewest penalties committed where the Falcons are among the league leaders every year.

Blank is certainly not getting any younger, and he wants to win NOW, because you never know what can happen health-related after 70. But come on, who are they going to replace Smith with? It would certainly not be only his fault if they happen to lose again. Maybe Blank could have signed off on two more key free agents, maybe Dimitroff could have made some better draft choices, maybe Ryan could have been more vocal and less robot-like in his demeanor, maybe the D-Block gang could have been less focused on their Youtube show, maybe Turner could have come in having run far more hills in the off-season a la Jerry Rice at 30. You win that many games in 5 years as head coach, you should keep the damn job. Period.

That will set up play action which will kill them ,esp. without their top pass rusher. great article Jeff. I could not believe the radio this morning when an unnamed DJ claimed that a loss this weekend would take away nothing from the regular season. No one gave this team credit when they were undefeated and Vegas doesn’t think they are as good as the seahawks. The last part of Jeff’s blog entry is the most important — especially the defensive coordinator. The Seahawks and Falcons are the only non-rematch Divisional game: advantage Falcons. Nolan has been able to cook up schemes to confuse top-flight QB’s all year. Wilson may be one himself right now, but the result will be no different. He’ll struggle. The game will hinge on turnovers, and an opportunistic D should send Atlanta to the NFC Championship Game.

The miss opportunities to get turnovers in the game, something the Atlanta Falcons don’t do in games. One of Seattle Seahawks pass rusher is done for the season, I am looking for a close game, I enjoy watching Russell Wilson, but I want Atlanta to try and win their first Playoff Game in the Georgia Dome. If we play good Defense and get turnovers in the game and Matt Ryan play at a high level then we should win the game on Sunday. Mike Smith and his staff have to out coach Pete Carol staff period. People need to calm down, Washington Redskin Defense lost that game and we have a better Defensive Coordinator then the Washington Redskin; Mike Nolan will get these guys ready on Sunday. Unreal at the level of misunderstanding by this commenter. All season long, when the Hawks play a marquee game, sports writers/reporters and mostly blog commenters always say the “Seahawks are overhyped.” Well Jesus Christmas, what does it take to disprove that??? They’ve beat the Patriots, Packers, 49’s and now the Redskins. What more do you want? And don’t give me that crap about RG3. Yeah, he got hurt (worse) and was out of the game. Their D gave up TWENTY-FOUR unanswered points. How do you explain that? Seattle’s D is very good (not the best), and like most on these boards have mentioned, the key aspects will be the Falcon receivers vs. the Seahawks secondary. If Ryan and Co. and exploit Seattle’s DB’s and safeties and get big plays, and then covert in the red zone (which the Falcons have a little trouble doing), then I think the Falcons will get the W.

If Seattle dominates in rushing and then starts to mix up all the schemes, then Atlanta is in trouble. Their D isn’t exactly superior (10th against the rush and 14th against passing, but 24th overall!)

Should be another good game, but I caution many of you who are predicting some sort of blowout. The Redskins fans did the same thing. Look what happened.

Where does this revisionist sports history come from? and most of you people are lifelong Atlantans?

Also, many Redskins fans were claiming that there was no way that Seattle was going to travel across the country and beat THEM in their own house. Their hubris was ridiculous. Bobby Cox of the NFL…funny! However I dont agree with that “gave up to much” for Julio. He is one of the main reasons we are where we are today! He pulled alot of pressure off of Roddy and Roddy is not getting any younger, so the crown is soon to be passed to Julio. Can you remember any of the guys chosen after Julio and what they are doing today in the NFL? I am sure some King Idiot does and will tell me about 30 other players who was chosen and who are better but right now not one rings a bell off the top of my head. We will continue to address the Oline and Dline…but memory fails me if there are guys causing havoc in the NFL after we choose Julio. Help me out. I think The Baker man has proven he was hurt last year and he has had a solid year. We need some more help ( like all other teams) but that Julio trade was something that many fans here in Atlanta said we never had the guts to do with any of our franchises here and he is an All Pro! I have always been a disciple of the POWER of POSITIVE THINKING!
For some reason Coach Smith doesn’t exude confidence. I have to question why?
Have the critics of his style gotten to him?
Does he believe he may actually lack the ability to really”step on the gas”?
I would rather hear a coach say openly that he feels that the team can win the game.
One statement! We can WIN this game!..and then say it again! We can WIN this game!
Not all the duplicitous mumbo jumbo about goals and the second season Coach speak.
This is not a corporation sales talk, this is FOOTBALL, mean, nasty, in your face, bloody, broken and bruising FOOTBALL. There should be no excuses..prior to the game and after.
Leave it all on the field!
If the Coach feels the team may or may not win is so lacking in confidence and the players sense this demeanor.
Wonder if he would feel better by saying his team doesn’t stand a chance and they will be one and done.
Then he can step to the podium and deliver his press conference complete with tears about how this is the best team who really rallied and fought hard to WIN THIS GAME.
And the public loves him..fa la la la lah..
Stop the nonsense and everybody settle down.
WE CAN WIN THIS GAME!
Coach,if you can’t stand the heat, go sit in the locker room and phone it in..
Otherwise get some guts and stand up and yell at the top of your lungs in front of the entire staff and management..WE CAN WIN THIS GAME..
And remember FALCONS..it is up to you…he can’t intercept three passes and recover their 2 fumblesl.
Honestly, I want to see him cry about how this is the best team and then, with a little blood in his eye..say ..WHO”S NEXT ?
It’s Now or Next Year…FALCONS
WE CAN WIN THIS GAME!!!

SEATTLE SCARES THE HELL OUT OF ME. There,I said it. Any team that gets down 14-0 in a place like FedEx Field and comes back not only to win but win convincingly isn’t a team to be trifled with. They are as hot as Green Bay and it wouldn’t surprise me if they make it to NO. They are playing with confidence and they are playing loose which in my opinion makes them just that much more dangerous. The Falcons will need to play a perfect game Sunday to get by the Seahawks. I see a common theme in many of these comments. Stuff the run, and confuse the rookie qb. Did Atlanta get a new playoff defense? Because the regular season defense was a bottom dweller as a rush defense. And as far as confusing the rookie, Seattle has faced much more aggresive defenses this year than the Falcons, and that rookie qb finished the season with a qb rating of 100.00. By comparison, Ryan, with a softer schedule finished the season with a qb rating of 99.1. He must have been confused more than our rookie. I think it will be a great game. To me the wild card in this game is the home crowd, and Tony G., but not the Falcon defense.

I echo that the Seahawks are not as impressive as some think. They are the hot flavor of the week. No team gets to the playoffs and advances without being decent. There are no Jacksonville or kansas City teams in the second round of the playoffs. Seattle is a decent team with a decent defense and a strong running game. They also have lost on the road to, among others, arizona, the lions, the Rams and the frickin dolphins. There is no excuse for the Falcons not winning this game. Seattle has to travel cross country for the second time in a week. We are healthy and rested and playing at home. No excuses!!!!!!

Don’t worry PSI (if I may), when they have to ditch “stars” after they hit the cap ceiling after extending Ryan, they will find out why drafts matters (and rookie contracts) keep good and great teams on a high level like Packers, Pittsburgh, NE, and the Ravens…

If the Falcons lose, Blank might consider making a coaching change, but he’s not a hot head. He’ll sit down after the heat of battle and review Smith’s entire body of work – as a coach who has had four straight winning seasons, three of those resulting in playoff appearances. And after the frustration of being one-and-done again fades a little, there’s no way in hell he’ll fire Smith.

I don’t see how ANYBODY can look at the Smith’s record over the last four years and justify firing him. Having said that, I’m still not sure he’s is the long term answer…I just know he’s better than pretty much everybody that came before him.

Lastly, as much as I want this team to win (I’m an old fart and I’ve been on this wagon since the beginning) this team has impressed me in maybe 3-4 games this year. Yeah, I know they won 13, but several of those wins were not impressive. I just hope they’re not who I think they are.

Look at any team (Packers, Saints, Patriots, etc.) that won the Superbowl in recent years (or further back as happened to the Patriots or Colts, won that elusive first Superbowl). Up until that moment there were the detractors and the doubters, particularly among the national media (except for the Saints; it seemed like they couldn’t be bigger homers for New Orleans if they tried).

If the Falcons end up winning the Superbowl, just watch how many of the same “experts” and pundits who’ve used the phrase “never won in the postseason” suddenly start proclaiming them the next dynasty or whatever and taking credit for calling it. So pay zero attention to the bandwagon; the only real fans are the ones who’ve stuck with their team through the good years and the bad and don’t switch loyalties based on who’s the “favorite to win it all”. One has to think that the worm has to turn for the Falcons this year. This will not be the Aaron Rodgers light show that happened in 2010. Falcons were ultimately blown out in that game, but that was after the wheels came off right before the half and they were never able to recover from Ryan’s Pick Six – prior to that they were in the game and if it had not been for the suck ass secondary we may not have been shredded. Anyone who saw the Cardinals game knows we should have won it and let it get away. Last year was just embarrassing. SO, they are a better team this year and I think the only reason they sucked against lesser competition, was they could just not get themselves up for those games like they did against NYG, Broncos, Dallas, NO, and Wash. That is the team we should expect to see on Sun, with a lot of attitude like they had against NYG. As long as Matty Ice doesn’t become the Matty Melt with scared eyes, we should dominate ,, and I don’t think that is the Matt Ryan we will see. God, I hope not!! Go Falcons!!!

Extremus, those teams turned themselves into a running capable teams for the post-season… And didn’t wait for the Bye week to accomplish it… The Saints may have lost their last 3 regular season games, but they jump started the run game and hit the Cardinals up for 171 yds in the Divisional round… The Packers put 143, 119, 60, then back up to 138 against the Eagles, on the Falcons 96 to close it out, and 120 to win the NFC championship in Chicago… The 2006 Colts only threw for more 300 yards once in their SB run (AFC championship game), the rest they rushed for less than 100 yards in their final games… That was against the Ravens… Playoff football still flows along success in running unless you have one of those games like GB laid on the Falcons…

I think everyone is overestimating the Seahawks. They’re a good team but they’re beatable, especially on the road. I wasn’t particularly blown away by their win over Washington. If RGIII didn’t get hurt, they could have lost that game. Plus coming out to the east coast in back to back weeks is no joke.

I think the Falcons win for a few reasons: I think the big play ability is more prevalent in the passing game than in years past. I think the secondary is better at generating turnovers. And the games they have needed to win to prove themselves( Denver, New York, New Orleans for the second time) they won. The games they lost were pretty meaningless when you really look at it. I just think the nucleus of this team is too strong to keep losing in the post season. And I’ll also say this, if the Birds win one, I think they could win two more.

A) ATL has never lost to another “bird” team at home in postseason.

Nardawg…. You Couldn’t be more wrong. But please keep up the HATE… HATE ALL DAY ON THE FALCONS….I LOVE IT, AND SO DO THEY….THEY FEED OFF IT, AND THEY DON’T NEED ANY MORE MOTIVATION!!! Home field for the NFC playoffs, 2 weeks of rest and getting at full strength, motivation from hearing “0-3 in the playoffs” for the past 4 months, and Seattle will be without their defensive star Chris Clemons. But getting back to where you are wrong. The NFL playoffs USED TO be about defense, running game, and getting hot. But this is 2013, things have changed, and now it’s all about quarterback play in the playoffs. Although being hot helps, it’s limiting turnovers and having a banner day for your quarterback that wins playoff games now. Just look at last year’s Super Bowl matchup…Eli Manning (playing his best football of the year down the stretch) vs. Tom Brady (also playing very well down the stretch). How about the year before… Aaron Rodgers (pretty much took the team on his shoulders and was a one-man wrecking crew in the playoffs) vs. Ben Rothlesberger (another elite quarterback, had a 97 passer rating that year). Pittsburgh is the only one of those four that had a dominant defense, so your argument doesn’t hold any water. I could also list teams like the Saints (Brees) and Colts (Peyton Manning) who have won Super Bowls recently with lousy defenses. Also none of these teams had good running games, except the Steelers, and Rashard Mendenhall is not really an elite back, so that is wrong as well. Maybe 20 years ago you were right, but its 2013 so you are wrong. A good solid gameplan by the coaches and superior quarterback play is what is going to win this Falcons/Seahawks game. I like Atlanta for a better game plan and they obviously have the superior quarterback. Matt Ryan is on another level from Russel Wilson, who is only a rookie. Seattle’s defense won’t be able to stop Roddy White, Julio Jones, Tony G (who is VERY motivated for a Super Bowl), Harry Douglas, and Jacquizz Rodgers. The Falcons just have TOO many weapons on offense, and a very opportunistic defense. I think the Seahawks will hang around, but it will be a 10 point Atlanta win in the end….

Roddy, Julio, Harry Douglas BETTER THAN Sidney Rice, Golden Tate, and Jon Baldwin

Matt Ryan BETTER THAN Russel Wilson

Tony G BETTER THAN Zack Miller (or whoever they have playing TE, doesnt really matter)

Falcons OL BETTER THAN Seattle OL

Falcons Playing in the dome BETTER THAN Seahawks traveling East for the 2nd week in a row, (they are 4-5 on the road this year, and 1-3 with 1pm East Coast games)

Falcons are better rested, have had more time to prepare, and have more playoff experience.

I personally believe Seattle’s defense is a little overrated, I don’t think they are bad, but they just don’t match up well with the Falcon’s recievers and tight ends, who are big but also fast. I believe Julio and Roddy went for over 200 yards when we played them last year in Seattle. But this time they will be relaxed on the turf in the Dome, will have fresher legs than the Seattle corners with 2 weeks rest, and have ALL the motivation in the world to prove the haters wrong.

Falcons HAVE NO EXCUSES not to at least make the Super Bowl this year. I think we have the more talented team than Seattle, Green Bay, of San Fransisco.

Falcons 31 Seahawks 21. ATL BABY!!!!!!

Ridiculous to indicate the head men on a staff that won a division title while going 13-3 are playing a win or leave town game (add in they took over a franchise that was so bad it was expected to take years to turn around). I understand such talk from the nincompoops on the message board, but I now question Jeff Schultz’s ability to write about the NFL. TOTALLY IGNORANT!!!!

Jeff please name me one coach that was fired with Smith’s record? Schotenheimer did not have the body of work and even so his firing was related to a fued with the GM, not a house cleaning. This game is HUGE for sure BUT EVEN bigger for Blank. IF we lose (and we better not)
NO WAY will a new stadium get passed this year and FORGET PSL’s…
I am also worried because we have lost numerous times to Rookie QB’s. Well Wilson is one. Just
think of the press. Falcon’s lose to a 3rd round QB that was really picked to be a backup QB.
Seattle losing Cleamons helps the Falcons. It’s going to be close and I am again extremely worried.
Atlanta is a great city but is also a choking city for pro sports.

Heard several top notch ESPN sports people this afternoon all say that Seattle will beat ATL rather easily. After taking all things into consideration I have to agree with them. We may just see another beat down like AL-ND last night. A team like the Seahawks will expose all the Falcon’s weaknesses. Besides they have to keep up the “Atlanta Tradition” and follow in the footsteps of the Braves!

I think if given proper protection, M. Ryan will pick their secondary apart. There’s no way anyone is gonna take away Roddy, Julio and Tony. And there’s also Harry in the middle of the field. Now, if protection is an issue, MR will get happy feet and all hell will break loose. Our defense will keep us in it, but the offense has to get us the win.

I think the Falcons have a great shot at making the Super Bowl and maybe winning it all. Nolan is the best DC in football. He has shut down every top QB that has came into the dome this year. If you can trick the Manning brothers and Brees into throwing 3 or more picks then we shouldn’t worry about Wilson or Kapernick.

Falcons fans,

Falcons win this game. Seattle is HOT, HOT, HOT, and have a STOUT D and RB. Much respect to Seattle and their passionate fan base. The national media are not pointing out that the Falcons use their superb screen pass attack as part of their running game. Back to back trips east, and R Wilson is a fine rook, but he IS a rook. Falcons D will do what they always do – give up yards and more FG’s than TD’s.

Look for Quizz, J Snelling, & Douglas to make an impact – especially if Jones and White cannot get loose. Look for Falcons to establish Gonzalez early and shorter throws to Jones and White. Use the pass to set up the running game and only hand the ball to Turner with a slam FB (Saints game in the Georgia Dome). The vertical throws will be there later, but you got to set up those Seattle safeties. A couple of successful smoke screens to Julio in 1st half will set up the fake screen to Julio/wheel route to Douglas in 2nd half from the Seattle 40 yd line. O-line ultimately wins/loses this game for Birds. RISE UP DIRTY BIRDS

So, you kids can’t even tell that you are ripe for a whoopin’?…I am going to be laughing so hard watching the face of a defeated fan base that is arguably the most pathetic in all of sports…How come Matt Ryan performed better on the road this year?…That’s a testimony to the lamest sports town in the country…The pressure is all on the Falcons and they have proven that they are not up to the task in the post season. You think this year is different?…Think again losers. Your team is soft and one dimensional…You can’t win with just a passing game. This has been proven in the playoffs. You weren’t impressed with the win on the road in Washington?…Good. We love it that way. All of you fans sound like you are trying to convince yourselves that this team is different and yet deep down you know…They are gonna take a beating. You can’t have a one dimensional offense and a weak D and expect to win a playoff game in a weak stadium against the hottest team in the league…By the way,..our rookie has a better rating than your veteran…Our runner hits DB’s, not the other way around. Marshawn Lynch will drag your defenders for 6 yards after you think you have him tackled. I feel sorry for you people having to be let down playoff after playoff. Make no mistake, it’s going to happen again and I’m going to laugh my ass off as I read your comments again about how you’re going to the SB. You are going to be beaten by a rookie QB who may not have as many yards but he does have a better passer rating and can run like your QB can’t. In the last 8 games of the season no QB in the league had a better rating. He may hand it off to Lynch, he may run, he may dump it off to a running back, a fullback, a tight end or maybe even a wide receiver…Your defense won’t have a clue. But hey, good luck with that Super Bowl dream.

Indeed, the third and fourth syllables of “dumb” and “a.ss” are most telling in the poster above.

The Falcons have the superor QB, the better overall team, the better coaching staff and they are an angry bunch whose anger will be stoked b their fans on Sunday.

I predict you will see a team fill of fury, resolve and a rabid determination to exemplify what the astute among us can clearly see forthcoming.

The Falcons will have this game in hand from the opening kickoff and their margin of victory should be by a minimum of 10 points…it coud be less or more depending upon MIke’s Smith’s tendency to protect a late lead or simply be the gentleman and true sportsman he is.

And plese cease witht eh never ending promotion of all of these read and react QB’s that are supposedly taking over the NFL QB position. This is an offense to dumb down plays to enable the Russell’s, Griffins’s, Kaepernck’s and Newton’s to be relevent and not make many mistakes. Make no mistake about it, the QB that will be hoisting the Lombardi will be either one of Brady, Manning, Rodgers or Ryan…the guys scoring in the 30’s on their Wonderlic scores and not stupid enough to wear tattoos, earrings, and fashionable arm covers. Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck are the only two smart and mature enough to possibly do this in the future.

“Damn, Najeh. I though you disliked Ryan…”

It’s never about likes and dislikes. I don’t know any NFL players personally. Just call it as I see it. The first four years of Ryan’s career he sucked at making plays down the field and didn’t respond well to pressure. This year he has consistently completed deep balls. I was skeptical about whether he would ever develop that explosive element to his game but he showed this year that he could. Now he just has to prove it against the league’s best secondary this weekend.

The Falcons are going to blow Seattle out of the building on Sunday.

1) This is the best Falcon team under Smith…the experience is there.

2) They basically ran away with the division. There goal is to make the playoffs and win. They were a virtual lock for a playoff spot after there 8th game. They have been looking forward(looking past opponents)to the first playoff game for over 2 months and yet they still won most of there games in the 2nd half of the season.

3) They are rested….angry…..hungry….focused and very good at what they do…..and they are at home.

We have yet to see how good they really are…..we got a glimpse against the Giants because that was a big measuring stick for them. That is the team that will show up on Sunday….only this time they will play even better.

Seattle is good but do you really think that a rookie led team can come in here and beat us given the above? I don’t think so either. Falcons roll……42-7.

New coordinators…..great offensive plan whereby Turner…Rogers….and Snelling have been utilized perfectly and that includes many different screen pass options. No….this team is not the same as the last 2 falcons teams that lost in the playoffs. Remember the Denver game?….The defennsive scheme the Falcons used? The #1 seed Broncos and Manning did not even know which way was up. Big game….big performance. How bout the super bowl champion Giants? 34-0…are you kidding me. V Cruz was quoted as saying that the Falcons are the best team they faced all year. No folks…..this is the Falcons year! it is!

How many of you Falcon fans remember the 47-17 beating we laid down on the rams when the had Mora Jr? That playoff win represented a euphoria that I have not had since…..and I am looking forward to that euphoria returning this Sunday. The Falcons…coming off there 1st round bye… are going to play balls to the wall for 60 minutes and I just don’t see how a rookie led Seatlle team…having to make that 2800 mile trip can hang with us. I know Seattle is a solid team but that fact will end up sealing there doom as this years Falcons seem to play up to and well beyond the competition. 38-10….Falcons in a route.

If the 1990 San Francisco 49ers, as balanced and explosive offensive football team that has ever walked on a professional football field led by possibly the greatest big game QB in League history can lose to a lesser team (in terms of offense) on that home field, then a team which is nowhere as talented or balanced can be beat… Come on, I’ve seen better get taken down in the playoffs… It’s Game plan vs Game Plan, case closed… And for all of you deriding Wilson, here’s one name for you, Jeff Hosteltler… Again, defense and running games travel, unless you have a stubborn HC (see Mike Ditka), Carroll for all of arrogance does not seem to miss that point.

I’ve seen some mention of comparisons of Seattle to Carolina…and I agree they are similar.

The Falcons will struggle early and often vs the Seahawks and get down by 10 or so points in the first half, but they will scratch and claw in the second half and find a way to win a close game after Seattle’s replacement FG kicker misses a FG that would have sealed the game late in the 4th.

@Larry…The better overall team?…You’re hilarious. I noticed in your comment that you didn’t even make one point as to how that was the case…Better overall Team?…Wow…Denial is truly the best sedative in the hands of a Falcons fan I guess…The numbers would suggest the contrary and that doesn’t even come close to accounting for the intangibles…You will be one of the first people I will annoy on Monday…You probably won’t be around though…you seem to think that your team is going to conjure up some sort of physical dominant persona when they haven’t really had that all year and bring it against Seattle…I have 3 words for ya…Fewest Points Allowed. Only one team can claim that and unfortunately for you and your team, that’s the team you are playing on Sunday. This particular statistic was posted against teams like Green Bay, New England, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, just to name a few…During the regular season they never lost by more than 7 points…They were never blown out. This team hit their groove in the second half of the season and that’s the most important part of the season…Better overall team?…That’s a joke. Over the second half of the season Seattle averaged more points than you and gave up less points than you, by far. Larry, you’re an idiot. Even I don’t take my self seriously as is obvious by my screen name (Nostradumbass) which you thought fit to point out. At least I back my stuff with facts, not the delusional rantings of a perennial playoff losing fan of the Falcons. Make sure you’re here on Monday Larry. I’m going to have a special comment just for you. Three playoff losses in a row…about to become four…You are pathetic excuses for fans in Atlanta…I’d give you more respect but you don’t deserve it until you support your teams like real fans do. I’m gonna go ahead and apologize ahead of time for your players that get injured…I hope they are able to heal in the off season and subsequent rebuilding. Cheers!

Jim Zorn 3 consecutive seasons 3000 yards passing then Seattle Seahawks team record, since broken by Matt Hasselbeck in 2005, who had 7 seasons with Seattle of 3000 yards, including 4 seasons in a row over 3000 yards 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Chipper Towers, last night January 8 at 4:19 pm of the AJ-C, states :

“Aaron Murray, the first quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards in three consecutive seasons”

Uh, no. That’s not true, now is it Chipper Towers, sir ?

http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2012/FBS.pdf

19,217 yards career passing Case Keenum Houston
17,072 yards career passing Timmy Chang Hawai’i
15,793 yards career passing Graham Harrell Texas Tech
15,031 yards career passing Ty Detmer BYU
14,667 yards career passing Kellen Moore Boise State

Aaron Murray will not catch any of these Top 5, and of the Top 5, only Case Keenum was awarded an extra season – because of injury during his 3rd eligible year.

71,838 yards career passing NFL Brett Favre – former Falcon traded

I believe that record to be safe from Aaron Murray, too, Chipper Towers, sir.

Aaron Murray went on yesterday to the press : “Work on my speed a little more. I feel like at my age I’ve gotten a little slower. I’ve got to work on that more”

Well, yeah. No one is going to accuse Aaron Murray of being a Dual-Threat Quarterback in college, now are they ? The SEC Defensive Linemen routinely out-run him from behind and tackle him. He’s not very mobile, with a career 1-yards per carry average in college. Billed as the Top Dual-Threat Quarterback after his Florida State Championship coming into College, he has clearly attempted to run the football in college, with zero success. Trying to do so now, once again his Redshirt Senior Football Season – here practicing with the team starting December 2008 the 1st Michigan State bowl game – with Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall Track Stars to hand the ball off to 2013, would be the height of self-centeredness ball-hoggishness.

And, as Grievous an error as having tried to do so since December 2008 here.

Only more-so, and wrong-headed, and silly, and a huge mistake to the detriment of the Team.

The Last Thing this football team needs 2013 is for Aaron Murray to try to prove his Internet buddies right that he can run the football, when by now, even they have given-up all hope of making such spurious comments, again, that he can, or should attempt to run the football.

But, we do have 6 Quarterbacks on the roster, if that is how he wants to end his college career. He is simply way to slight to run the football in The SEC. And, is his worst attribute for the next-level, too.

I wish I could grow 2 more inches, 6’ 1” Aaron Murray quipped to Chipper Towers last night, swearing it is legitimate, Chipper Towers reports.

Ok. If Aaron Murray “SWEARS” to Chipper Towers, he’s 6’ 1” as legitimate 6’ 1”, I will certainly concede the point. Only JSS would SWEAR to a lie, and certainly not Aaron Murray.

And, then there is

5’ 11” Russell Wilson QB Seattle Seahawks

If you lose to Seattle………..They’ll be saying how overrated Atlanta was and how easy their schedule was and also point out that they lost 2 out of their last 3 games.
Then theylll pick out why we lost , blaming Abraham and Gonzalez as tired old men combined with a lack of coaching experience.
The Falcons have never been a fan favorite nor sports casters either. All i hear about is how dangerous Seattle is right now and how wonderful Seattles defense is and how fantastic their head coach is.
When Atlantas mentioned its more like “they have good recievers” and have a good home record and a sub par running game.
Falcons win then itll be Seattle just wasnt ready to play or their QB had a bad performance and Seattles Defense made too many mistakes.
Its never about us in Atlanta. Our fans, our players. Roddy White not being selected to the Pro Bowl and some others as well. We never get respect and i hope……..no i pray that my Falcons will play like theyve never played and beat every opponent the next 3 games with shutouts or no TD’s and make all these nay-sayers eat crow.
I am fed up with it my friend…….NO RESPECT.
Time things change and the Falcons be feared by opponents when their played. Not only losing to us, fearing embarrassment and getting hurt by our defense.

Pretty simple Smitty….just show us you can coach and lead a team with the big boys…the better coaches, not the best, but the better. Anybody can beat up on the league during the reg season. But consistently winning when the big chips are on the table? That takes a certain steely and mentally tough type of head coach. This is no longer the “marathon” and is now a sprint. It is now not only what your team does….but How it does it. It take passion, focus, channelled fire, immense aggression, precise execution. Not sure Smitty has this….I hope I’m wrong.

I don’t think for one minute Blank would can Smittie with a loss. I can remember when the Falcons did not win 13 games in 2 back to back seasons. The line of scrimmage is where the game will be won. If the O line can open some holes, Turner is a load to bring down and he strikes fear in any DB who sees him coming. This automatically opens up the passing game and the Falcons are loaded there. JSS yesterday at 8:22 am, made a racial post, and then when Jeff A. Schultz removed the post and posted that the next person who made a racial post in here would be removed from the blog, JSS replied that what he said was the same racial post yet again, which is still here – only he left off the last A which he clearly did have in his racial post of 8:22 am which was removed for being a racial post, obviously. He went on, JSS, to redefine what the racial post was, the most common of all racial post Acronyms. In fact, so common that GOOGLE searcher JSS could not possible GOOGLE his acronym as actually posted at 8:22 am, and come up with anything other than the racial post it is, and remains – removed for being a racial post or not.

So, to call JSS a poster who does this or that, and leave out what a BOLD-FACED LIAR he is, is remiss, for if he is anything, he is a poster who will say whatever he wants to self-serve his own status for Jeff A. Schultz. Imagine trying to tell us all he actually meant this word referring to your backside only when he used the most common of all racial posts on the Internet referring to race.

No. That is what he is known for. LIAR. Yes, he GOOGLES. Yes, he argues every point as not an advantage for the Falcons. Yes, he steadfastly refuses to post the exact prediction to ANY game so that it is not PASTED DOWN HIS bb…well, you get the idea. But, telling us what it does stand for, having to make that up when everyone knew instantly when he replied to Larry what JSS meant with JSS’s racial post at 8:22 am followed by yet another which still remains, lying what he thought he meant, instead, leaving out at the end, the “A.”

1. Offensive line needs to keep Ryan clean. No more than 1 sack and 5 knock downs.
2. Ryan needs to make quick decisions when passing.
3. Defense needs to play like they did against the Giants.
4. Put a spy on Wilson, make him throw the ball
5. Defense needs to confuse Wilson like we did to Peyton Manning
If we can do this, we WILL win…..

Simply put: they have no running game– a fat chuggy RB who does a little Irish jig for 2 or 3yds and a little fast guy who gets knocked down easy. What the Falcons really need (and they’ve always needed) is a big strong fast breakaway running back. For some reason management has never been interested in trying to get an Adrian Peterson (or the likes) on the team. Until that time comes they will nevere win a Super Bowl.

Nostril.dumb.ass,

Here are some stats for you per ESPN:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/defense/seasontype/2

Total offense: Atlanta #8, Seattle #17 (below the league average)
Total receiving: Atlanta #5, Seattle #29 (just above the great Jets and Chiefs–LOL!)
Total passing: Atlanta #6, Seattle #27

And as for your total points allowed? Yes, Seattle in that weak azz NFC west of zero offenses ranked #1.

However, there is a certain team that had to take on the highest ranked cumulative offenses in the NFL (The Saints #2 ranked–twice–, the #3 Lions, the #4 ranked Denver, the #5 ranked Washington, the #6 ranked Dallas, and the #9 ranked Tampa–twice again).

So, slimy nostril dumb azz, the means the “validated” Atlanta Falcons played the greatest scoring, highest octane offenses in the land and guess where we finished in points allowed? 5th…18.7 ppg allowed versus Seattle’s 15.3. That’s a 2.4 game difference for your mountain, rain soaked mind!

So, I will be here right after the game to celebrate a relatively easy Falcon victory over your fraud of a team, your leprechaun QB (nice guy though, unlike you) and you. I’m so ready for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday; was on the espn, msn, and cbssports websites earlier and I’m beyond sick of hearing about how the Falcons lost in the playoffs one, two, three, a hundred or whatever years ago to whoever in the playoffs and their playoff record. I’m beyond sick of hearing about how the Falcons didn’t play anyone and are overrated… I’m beyond sick of hearing the mouths of espn clones a.k.a Seahawk fans acting like their team is literally unstoppable. I’m finally sick of hearing about how the Falcons lost to DIVISIONAL opponents carolina and tampa frickin bay! Enough with the past, hoping that the Falcons end some bad postseason habits Sunday. No matter what the media, other Fans, etc. think, the Falcons have and always will have some of the most dedicated fans, we have never been spoiled by the media, great owners, etc. like (some) of the teams in other cities in almost any sport. (90’s Braves being the only exception). Yet, we continue to stand tall, stay dedicated, and be patient… We are the Falcon Nation, Love us or hate us, we are not going anywhere!!!!!!!!

Thomas Brown – What “racial post” did I remove and what “racial post” did I not remove?

I’ll repeat this now for anybody who isn’t anywhere: If anybody writes something that you believe is objectionable, please let me know and I will look at it or respond. If you think I missed the comment or missed your response to the comment — both of which are possible — you can click the “report this comment” button below that comment or email me directly at jschultz@ajc.com.

I don’t usually address specific commenters like this, but in the case of JSS — whom many of you obviously, uh, dislike — I think it’s mostly a case of you viewing him as an annoyance and taking a contrary view (usually anti-Falcons, anti-Ryan) than it is him going all racial on a situation. But if you think I’m wrong, let me know.

If this blog is akin to a virtual bar, with fans of a team cheering, griping, commiserating, and, yes, arguing, then JSS is the equivalent of a guy who walks in and says “you people are all stupid, your delusional, your QB sucks, the organization is full of idiots, you people don’t know football like me, I will now read from the Pro Football Weekly stat page about the Chuck Knoll Steelers so you can get a clue, etc. etc.” That person is goinig to have things insults and objects thrown at him.

But Smith play book consist of only three plays run Tunner on 1st down run Tunner on 2nd down Run Tunner on 3rd and long. Which want win championships . Smith should be fired if they don’t win the Super bowl .

If the Falcons dont win in the playoffs this year, the man to blame will be Coach Mike Smith. It is coach “Smitty” Smith who kept saying continually after IRONICALLY ENOUGH the WINS that, WE WILL LOOK AT THE FILM, MAKE THE CORRECTIONS SO THAT WE WILL GET THE OUTCOME THAT WE WANT. The problems kept re-surfacing in ALL the games all the way up to the Tampa game with the Falcons making their 3 usually errors. #1. Lack of a short yardarge running game especially in third and 1 or 4th and 1 situations where getting the first down would be a premium; #2.Failure to continue scoring and inability to allow bordem and complacency to set in (which means building leads, then sitting on those leads); and #3.failure to have a balanced running attack AND using the running game to ruin the game by milking the clock too early (after the 1st period). milking the clock shouldnt occur until at least midway through the fourth quarter. It doesnt take a dummy to figure that one out. Any way, the Falcons will lose to the seahawks and Smith should get fired. That would be a perfect ending to top off the season. The tell tale sign that this team was a fraud was that they wee unable to blow people out.

As long as the Falcons don’t try to run Michael Turner all day long on Sunday (Turner for 1 yard, Turner for a 3 yard loss, Turner drops another pass, etc.), then they will beat Seattle.

I am just hoping that the fans will be making so much noise that Russell Wilson can’t even hear the offensive plays from the sidelines in his helment headset. GO FALCONS!!!!

I like our chances this weekend. However, if we lay an egg like we did against Carolina and Tampa Bay then Smith will go. I say that because laying an egg comes down to coaching. Further, IF smitty is gone and AB doesnt hire Cowher or Gruden or even Dungy then he isnt really serious about winning a championship.

vesaversa, I agree with you concerning the playcalling, but I disagree about firing Mike Smith. I think Mike Smith does a good job in motivating and preparing his football team….they just don’t have enough difference makers in the trenches.

I think falcons spent to much time solidifying the skill positions and not enough time solidfying the line of scrimmage(trenches). This offseason they need to find better difference makers(DL/OL)…..starting with SHELDON RICHARDSON-dt….he is a force to be reckon with…..sign fa Glenn Dorsey-dt and fa Will Beatty-ot.

IMO if the Falcons lose on Sunday there won’t be any major changes. And there shouldn’t be. I believe the front office believes in the way Smith runs the team. The time to fire him was after last season. You don’t fire him after the first year with two new coordinators. Now if history repeated itself again next year than you will probably see a head coaching change.

From all the BLOGS and the COMMENTS it appears that most of the fans are nervous and think the Falcons will CHOKE and COLLAPSE and get bounced out of the playoffs again. I believe that the Falcons are going to win the superbowl this year, and in order for them to do it, they will beat SEATTLE (this weekend), GREENBAY (in the NFC title game), then go to face either NEW ENGLAND or DENVER in the superbowl AND CRUSHING EITHER DENVER OR NEW ENGLAND, 50-10 IN THE SUPERBOWL. So RELAX fans as you can see you have nothing to worry about! The only thing you as fans should be thinking about now is what you will wear to the Falcons superbowl victory parade down Peachtree Street AFTER THE FALCONS WIN THE SUPERBOWL.

Michael “I’m No Burner” Turner has got to be some kind of factor in this game. He just hasn’t hit the hole hard the last couple of years. He tiptoes too much, ala Brandon Jacobs. I think Matty and the passing game are the ultimate deciders of this one; but Turner has got to give some kind of meaningful contribution. If he doesn’t, bench his a** and let Snelling run the rock.

They need to keep Turner off the field on SUnday in my opinion. Really shouldn’t do too much running period. I say dust off the scheme from the KC game and run that exact opening drive against Seattle. Lots of quick passes and no huddle. Make that defense run around all first quarter and get them tired for the second half. Get Rodgers out in space with screens (do NOT do any silly end arounds with JJ). Let TG find holes in the zone (they can’t cover JJ and White man to man because Douglas and TG will kill them). Run just often enough to set up play action but let Rodgers and Snelling carry the ball.

Seattle’s defense is aggressive so set up some double moves with early slants to JJ and White, then hit them over the top with a double move late in the game. It’s really not that hard when you have weapons like the Falcons do. NO defense ought to be able to stop us if everybody (including the coaches) does their job this week….

Can we please stop talking about JSS and resume a mature football discussion? I want to know what you guys think about our offensive game plan for Sunday. We opened the season with a stunning display at KC and I really thought that was how the year was going to go but after the Denver game we sort of went back to old habits and stopped doing the things that worked so well early on against KC and SD. I know they weren’t great teams but Ryan proved that he can take over the game if they just let him. The Falcons need to take off the training wheels and let Matt run the no huddle for most of the game.

I just keep thinking about that KC game to start the year. The offense looked radically different from last season and everybody was saying that Koetter really understood Ryan and how to scheme for this offense but by the 4th game we had sort of gone back to a conservative, run-first game plan.

How many first drive TD”s have we had this year? It seems like our scripted drives to open games have been very successful and I don’t know why we always look so good on that first series then look so bad in the 3rd Quarter?

I think the Falcons should attack the strength of that Seattle D! If you remember everyone talked about how the Gmen would give Matt and the offense fits with the pass rush! We attacked the Gmen pass rush by throwing the ball, it put doubt in the Giants after they put 51 on the team they played before us; because we attacked them where they thought they were the strongest! When we do the same to Seattle it will put doubt in the minds of that D and make them change the D gameplan and cause bickering and confusion with those young guys! As for the D, use the same method! We know we dont stop the run well, but when we establish run blitzes and 8 in the box like we did Tampa the first time ( remember the Muscle Hamster and even the all world rookie from Giants and even Shady from Philly) it causes confusion and doubt and when we take that away, Russell will have to play against a D that is ready to attack! Just like all those games!

Yeah, nobody seems to remember that we have one of the best secondaries in the league. I can’t think of anybody really better than Decoud and Moore as far as safeties go (imagine if we had a healthy Grimes too). We gave up a lot of garbage yards this year but we didn’t give up points and that is the important thing. I really could envision this game being 17-13 or something like that…

Thomas Brown

January 9th, 2013
4:18 pm

There is no doubt that we’re going to pass the football like crazy compared to what Seattle does. We fully, or I anyway for us, fully expect Seattle to run the football more than we do. They want to keep the amount of time the far-better quarterback Matt Ryan has to throw the football to 3, one more than they can account for, receivers down the field. They accomplish this by running. They will have 50 more yards rushing than we do. We will have 200 more yards in the air than they. They are the team whom we must beat. Falcons have waited for this day, not some other day : This one. If there ever was a game plan, so plain and so clear, never was it more obvious than now, Eric. That’s how I see it, too.

Russell Wilson 5′ 11″ and 4.5 speed.
Matt Ryan will pass the ball up and down the field.

I agree that the run will now be open for us. We, then, run. You’re not, as the Falcons going to go out there and run the football down their throats. We’re not Alabama. We’re the Falcons with all our monies spent on 3 wide receivers for our top Quarterback to throw the ball to – and, we will.

There will be other match-ups later with teams who do have a quarterback. Russell Wilson ain’t it. He’s a joke of a quarterback doing what a cheating caught in the act like JSS Pete Carroll, wants him to do – run like this is Southern California and like the Falcons are some group of misfits who lucked their way to 13-3 like San Diego State college Southern California could just ignore the passing game and say : Oh, hey, we gots that covered with our great 2 cornerbacks. Uh, no they don’t.

That’s how I see this game, Eric. Good question – not that you or any of us can get in a word, edgewise around here.

Seattle has nothing covered.

We will win 24-13 with Julio, Tony and believe it or not Mt33 having TD’s. 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter last week and Seattle put up 11 points….all the other points were ine touchdown and 3 field goals…now you bring a guy off the street who has to kick field goals? I take nothing away from Seattle, they are a up and coming team that really reminds me of the Falcons 5 years ago….a team that is run heavy based and has a stud of a back in Lynch. However, it will take alot to beat the Falcons on Sunday and two weeks from Sunday. This team has a chip on its shoulder and will show it on Sunday. All year when pushed to answer the bell ( Aints twice, should have won both, Giants, Detroit, Philly, Denver) this team has taken the charge and in a boxing metaphor has gotten up on every standing 8 count with a chance to win EVERY game we played this year! We will continue to Rise Up like we have all year!

We just need to execute our fundamentals and not worry about the playoff thing. Stay loose and confident and remember that this ain’t GB and Aaron Rodgers coming to town this time. It’s a very good rookie QB but a rookie nonetheless. The Dome will be rocking and he’ll have trouble hearing as will the rest of their offense. Seattle is not the big, bad, scary wolf ESPN is making them out to be. They are a young, talented team that should get beat by a more talented and experienced Falcons squad. Now next week either GB or SF will be a problem but we’re going to have to beat the good teams when it matters if we ever want to reach our ultimate goal.

Who is it then in your assertion, Reeves or Reid? None of these man will see Canton, the bar for a coach to get in is old NFL/AFL championships or SB appearances… Only exception is George Allen. Reeves and Coryell will need a miracle.
