John Abraham, Jonathan Babineaux and Falcons are 2-0 vs. playoff field. (Curtis Compton)
Much has been made about how difficult the Falcons’ schedule was this season and whether, at 13-3, they’re truly one of the elite teams in the NFL playoff field.
We really won’t know the answer to that until we see how they fare Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, and possibly beyond. But here’s one measuring stick, which you may or may not consider relevant. I went through all 12 teams in the playoff field and compared their results against other postseason teams.
The Falcons are the only team that went undefeated: 2-0.
They’ve also played the fewest playoff teams: two (Denver and Washington). Every other team faced between three (Washington) and seven (Minnesota and Houston) playoff teams during the regular season.
The most impressive team: Seattle at 4-1. The Seahawks have beaten Green Bay, New England, Minnesota and San Francisco, and their only loss came to a divisional opponent (49ers) that they later defeated.
Here are the standings vs. playoff teams, ranked by winning percentage.
Atlanta: 2-0 (1.000) (wins: Denver, Washington)
Seattle: 4-1 (.800) (wins: Green Bay, New England, Minn., San Fran.)
Washington: 2-1 (.667) (wins: Minnesota, Baltimore)
San Francisco: 3-2 (.600) (wins: Green Bay, Seattle, New England)
Indianapolis: 3-2 (.600) (wins: Minnesota, Green Bay, Houston)
New England: 3-3 (.500) (wins: Denver, Indianapolis, Houston)
Cincinnati: 2-2 (.500) (wins: Washington, Baltimore)
Houston: 3-4 (.429) (wins: Denver, Baltimore, Indianapolis)
Minnesota: 3-4 (.429) (wins: San Francisco, Houston, Green Bay)
Denver: 2-3 (.400) (wins: Cincinnati, Baltimore)
Baltimore: 2-4 (.333) (wins: Cincinnati, New England)
Green Bay: 2-4 (.333) (wins: Houston, Minnesota)
The Falcons swept eight games against the NFC East and AFC West this season, but only one team in each of those divisions ended up making the playoffs.
The relevance of all this.
We’re about to find out.

Home field (Domefield) advantage for the Falcons, two weeks of traveling clear across the country by the Seahawks, great recievers, experience of the Falcons in beating teams and coming back from behind to win are all advantages

I note that the two teams at the bottom of the list, Baltimore and Green Bay, both won this weekend. One might also characteraize the Seattle win over Green Bay as suspect, given how it was accomplished.

Jeff excellent points, Falcons should win this game Sunday with the SeaHawks. But it won’t get the monkey off the backs of HC, MR2 & Team until after the NFC championship game come 1/20th whether it be GB or SF… the Falcons need to beat one these teams.
Personally I would whether see us play the Packers in the NFCC, if it all falls into place by then. Of course and that means if either Tom Brady/Patriots or Peyton Manning/Broncos make it to SB &&&&….. But let’s don’t get too ahead of ourselves.

The first time we see Russell Wilson charging up in front of his running back to block, we should let Decoud rip his head off (legally, of course). That should teach him to hand the ball off and fall down.

I am not saying Seattle isn’t good, clearly they are, but these who beat who scenarios are all but worthless – look who beat Seattle – Miami, Detroit, St. Louis and AZ, not exactly powerhouses. (and I know I know, Falcons lost to TB and Carolina)
Point being, you cannot predict Sundays result on past games in the NFL, the talent is just too good league wide.
Matt Ryan is the key – if he has a Giants-like game, we win, if TB Matt Ryan shows up, we lose.

I’m thinking a rested Falcons team that has something to prove should come out really hard and fast. Kinda like the Redskins did.
Can the Falcons get enough run yards to keep them off of Ryan? And can Atlanta contain Wilson and Lynch on the ground? If the answer to those questions is yes, I reckon the Falcons win going away.
If they’re no, it could be a grinder of an afternoon.

@ Atlfalconsfan0125, agreed. I think “it’s different this year” should be their slogan. And, yes, Nolan and Koetter have made a huge difference. There is the whole “execute versus scheme” argument, but you have to do both well — have good playcalling and preparation, and good execution on the field. In the past, we’ve gotten good results with very good execution overcoming weak schemes and predictability on offense. For the most part. Now we have both sides of the equation, and that makes this year much different.
Atlfalconsfan0125

I think the fact that we put the offense in Ryan’s hands instead of Turner’s is the main difference. In the past if teams stopped Turner, they stopped the Falcons. Thats how the Giants got us last year. But now that it goes through Ryan, the chains can keep moving even though Turner is being stuffed.

7 SEC BCS National Championships in a Row by Alabama, Alabama, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, LSU, and Florida.
Before that there is the Texas, then the vacated, then LSU and of course, it all started with Tennessee in 1998 over Florida State (FSU.)
All told The SEC has been invited to 9 BCS National Championship Games, and has won all 9.
The PAC-12 out there in the Land of Fruit and Nuts where nobody cares about football, has -0-.
The Big XII has 2, and all the rest have 1.
But, they wouldn’t have, if they had invited an SEC team to the Title Game those few long-ago years.
Choklahoma has been invited to the most Title Games, and LOST the most.
Choklahoma’s 3 LOSSES are nearly matched by Florida State (FSU) and Ohio State.
The Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program has never Won the BCS National Championship Game, and of the 120 Division FBS teams, only 10 have.
# 1 Consensus Alabama
# 4 Consensus Georgia, was Alabama’s Greatest Win 2012 season and has good chance to be # 3 in the AP Poll in a couple of hours, now. The Coaches’ Poll is a Dictatorship in a couple of hours now, and are told they MUST vote by Rule Alabama # 1 and an-undeserving 28-0 halftime 42-14 with 2 meaningless late touchdowns Nick Saban (4) $ 5 million dollars was upset at his team for giving up to Notre Shame.
The Falcons, likewise win against Seattle for the SAME REASON. 5′ 11″ with 4.5 speed Seattle Quarterback Russell Wilson is no match-up with Matt Ryan, otherwise Seattle would win.
# 3 AP Poll 2002 Georgia
# 2 AP Poll 2007 Georgia
# 4 AP Poll 2012 Georgia with a shot at # 3, will be close with ESPN saying NOTHING about how Georgia was Alabama’s Greatest Win and NOTHING about UGA opening Top 5 now 2013 with Aaron Murray returning. In fact, if Seattle had Aaron Murray, instead of NC State Quarterback who quit that team to choose Wisconsin team his senior season last year, Russell Wilson, Seattle would beat the Falcons. That’s how bad Russell Wilson is as a match-up against Matt Ryan.

Buddy Landel,
You’re correct.
Texas A & M indeed finished with its highest ranking in the AP Poll for a season since 1956 tied with Georgia at # 5 in the AP Poll just after the game, while Georgia under Mark Richt has finished # 3 for 2002 season and # 2 for the 2007 season, along with tied with Texas A & M for # 5 in the 2012 AP Poll.
Notre Shame dropped all the way to # 4, as I predicted they should 42-14 thrashing by 1 of many SEC teams whom Notre Shame would have lost to, to put me at 94 % nationally in the Bowl Challenge.
# 2 Oregon AP Poll 2012 season. The only poll published by the AP Poll for the 2012 season.
# 8 South Carolina
# 9 Florida, whom Georgia beat scoring 2 TD to Florida’s zero TD 2012.
# 17 LSU
# 23 Vanderbilt for 4 SEC East as I guaranteed to only 3 SEC West
In 1999, The Mighty SEC had 7 teams in the final AP Poll Top 25, matched by the Big 10 that season.
SEC 7 Top 25 AP Poll 2012 season, ties that record for any conference anytime.
Finest Hour for The SEC 2012 Season. And, a great season by The Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Team, returning Heisman Candidates Todd Gurley and Aaron Murray, both All-America 1st Team 2013 season.
# 7 Stanford
# 10 Florida State (FSU) to UGA at # 5 tie with Texas A and M
# 11 Clemson our opening opponent 2013
# 12 Kansas State
# 13 Louisville who EMBARRASSED The SEC and Florida in Sugar Bowl to Florida # 9
Who was the better team ?
Who had the better season ?
# 25 Nebraska
# 22 Northern Illinois
So :
Georgia beat 2012 season :
# 25 Nebraska
# 23 Vanderbilt
# 9 Florida
For 20 Wins Mark Richt era vs teams making the AP Poll Top 25
And, 4 wins now against teams making the AP Poll Top 10, which is pretty good – not much difference in Georgia with 4 wins over teams making the AP Poll Top 10 than other programs in the Mark Richt era, not as good as some by a win or so and better than some as I’ve detailed here and can do so again upon request.
Buddy Landel, you’re right Texas A & M indeed TIES Georgia at # 5 AP Poll 2012.

# 5 Texas A & M at 11-2 to # 4 UGA at 12-2.
Texas A & M LOST to Florida and UGA beat # 9 Florida, and Texas A & M beat Alabama whom Georgia should’ve too for clock mis-management, not because Alabama would’ve stopped Georgia on 1 more second or even 1 more play.

NFL not really going to pay Nick Saban more than he got at Alabama 2012 season.
Miami Dolphins were paying him $ 32 million for 4 years.
He gets $ 45 for 8 years at Alabama starting 2012.
$ 5,625,000 is pretty nice for a program who had not won a NC since 1992 before he arrived. Alabama is satisfied and Nick Saban is satisfied, and said he’d retire from this cushy job at Alabama when he signed the deal.

When I look back over this regimes’ playoff debacles its evident that Van Gorder was in over his head. Once those teams began to steamroll Van Gorder had no adjustment plan. I’ll keep playing my soft zone read and react. I feel Nolan has more savy than to allow a failed defensive scheme to continue to operate. Mularkey was a genius in his own mind therefore the offensive ineptness in each playoff game. I believe Nolan and Koetter will be the difference makers this weekend.

There is no information like AJC Sports Blog misinformation, Russell Wilson was college graduate with a remaining year of eligibility. He was not a “senior.” He’d also signed a MLB minor league professional contract. He was like a select few players because he was red-shirted in 2007 allowed a graduate eligibility year (in effect a graduate free agent)… Therefore he entered grad school at Wisconsin… Moreover, Tom O’Brien made the mess in the first place when he made it competition between Wilson and Glennon.for the NC State QB job…

I once worked with a fellow named Willy who was a longsnapper fot K.C. He told me about opposing players threatening mayhem and huge pain on him; he would always respond with: “I’ll be there at gametime.” We die-hard sold-out 12th manners here in the northwest are very enthusiastic about our team this year-and we love it when the NFL channel and ESPN opinionators dismiss us. After all, we’ve never won anything and truly have no history to brag about. All I can say to you lovely Falcons’ fans is: “Our team will be there, and then let the game speak for itself.” Have a super-sparkly day! …And may the stronger Raptor prevail.

You have 4 seasons of play in college football designated Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Football players. Each can be pre-ceded by a Redshirt in the designations, thus 5 seasons. A few players have been injured and the NCAA allows a Medical Redshirt 6th season. It is even possible to be granted 2 of those.
Russell Wilson for his SENIOR FOOTBALL SEASON quit his team NC State and took his 5′ 11″ with 4.5 speed to Wisconsin and he won a play-off game last week knocking off Washington so we don’t face RGIII with partial tears of ACL and LCL. He took advantage of NCAA rule that a graduated player who had not used up his 4-years of NCAA play : Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior Football Seasons, could transfer without 1-year sitting out to another FBS.
It has NOTHING to do with the fact that a Freshman Football Player might be in his Junior year of school, as some are. Aaron Murray GRADUATED last year and started work on his Graduate Degree LAST YEAR, And, his Redshirt Senior year is not until 2013 when he will break all SEC records except David Greene’s UGA record of 42 Wins and be in the Top 10 nationally over-all in all categories.
He will be working on his Doctor’s degree by then. And, that hardly makes him NOT having his SENIOR FOOTBALL season 2013 for UGA.
Russell Wilson is a JOKE of a comparison with Matt Ryan, and you sir are a poster known for his racists’ posts on this blog yesterday morning at 8:22 am.

So the Falcons went 2-0 against playoff teams. So that means you have played 2 teams which have made the play-offs. Seattle has gone 4-1 in the season and then took on Washington last week. So that is 5-1
Seattle’s defensive backfield is back up to full strength and doing well. They may be a little weaker on the defensive line because of the injury to Chris Clemons who is out for at least a year, he will be replaced by a rookie who looks to be a good replacement after looking at the Washington game.
Best of luck with your stats.
The rookie QB that you are down on made his mistakes early in the season. Seattle is out to prove a point because the rest of the NFL and media gives them no credit. Have the Falcons faced Wilson and Lynch at the same time. The Seattle corners are at the top of their game.

Can someone on here tell me who cant Google? Gosh I get tired of this guy with all this google crap and then he makes like he is the smartest guy in the frigging world! Man I would love for this guy’s computer to crash! Anyway since we know the rules are different for this guy ( As Schultz allows him carte blanche to bash everyone on here without repercusion) lets ban him. Allow him to be the best darn googler in the world! For the rest of us lets talk Falcons!
1. I disagree with that “seldom tested” statement! You dont just get passed 13 wins in the NFL. If you did it would be alot of 13 win teams in the NFL………so enough of that garbarge!
2. Good for Seattle for having the season record of being 4-1 during the season against teams in the playoffs. What award do they get for that? A free pass to New Orleans? NOPE. It does not work like that. So we will see you on Sunday!
3. There are alot of ANGRY BIRDS up at Suwanee today! Be careful what you wish for because you usually get it (except a computer crash or someone getting banned……….but hey he has pictures). If you wanted the ANGRY BIRDS Seattle you will get what you ask for!
4. Last but not least………..all of this talk about what Seattle will do and has done. Nice season, I take nothing away from a up and rising team! However, here is the real deal, I would like to see all of you back here on Monday morning. Win or lose. I will be here, thats what a fan does. Have the guts to pick a team and not lolly gag like some of you clowns have done for 17 weeks ( always providing google stats on why we wont win but never having the heart or man items to pick the other team, yet you show up every week to give us your two cent why from the top down Owner, GM, Coach, QB, etc…. is not built to win a championship). You know who you are and you will respond like you always do with some more gibberish because that is what you do, instead of having the heart and the man items to say perhaps I am wrong, I dont like this team, and I dont need to be on this blog with all of these Falcon fans. Why in the heck would I waste my team on a team I dont like typing and pulling up Google Stats…………………for the last 6 years or more from all accounts!? Is that not crazy nation?

Pete Prisco, Senior NFL Columnist, CBS Sports says
SO WHAT ?
That the Falcons’ Mike Smith and Matt Ryan are 0-3 in the play-offs. What does that have to do with the game against Seattle, who is :
(1) not as good as Denver Broncos
(2) not as good as Atlanta because of Matt Ryan & targets compared to Russell Wilson
(3) not as good as New England Patriots
(4) not as good as Green Bay Packers
(5) not as good as San Francisco 49ers
Then, comes
(6) Seattle Seahawks, hawks, playing twice in 7 days across the country 2,700 mile flights
4 of such flights, not at HOME, again with a QB who doesn’t match-up with Matt Ryan.
I bet Houston and Baltimore would beat Seattle coming twice 2,700 mile flights this week.
That’s 8 in my book because of Russell Wilson 5′ 11″ and 4.5 speed who cannot pass compared to Matt Ryan and his targets. 3 Pro-Bowl receivers Matt Ryan has; 3 of the very best.
Speed and hands of 3, one too many for Seattle, compared to Seattle’s Russell Wilson all 5′ 11″.
No.
Nice story Seattle, but cheater who only left Southern California because he KNEW he had NCAA sanctions taking away his BCS National Championship – the only 1 ever VACATED (Auburn) Pete Carroll. That’s the only reason you got Pete Carroll, who wears that around his neck that he therefore won NOTHING at Southern California, not 1 BCS National Championship like Nick Saban just won his 4th.
Pete Carroll
Russell Wilson
Seattle HOME with POOR ATTENDANCE at HOME and two 2,700 mile flights in a week (4.)
POWER RANKINGS NFL QUARTERBACKS week of January 8, 2013 :
MATT RYAN
Russell Wilson way worse than Matt Ryan, so much worse, than no comparison at all.
Next week, yes comparison – this week ? Matt Ryan & his targets compared to Russell Wilson ?

Again, Russell Wilson was a graduate. His former coach had demanded him to choose football and give up baseball. This despite the assurances by O’Brien when he recruited him, he was given an either or choice… The kid graduated early, he had the option and the Big 10 did not preclude it… Moreover, Glennon was holding the same hand, he was threatening to transfer as he’d graduated too (like Murray) and had two years remaining (Wilson had one)… The kid stated the following in 2011:
“I really want the fans, N.C. State alumni and most of all my teammates to know if I had been given an equal opportunity to compete for the starting job, I would not have asked for my release,” Wilson said Saturday in a telephone interview. “I am a competitor.”
“Wilson, a three-year starter, is playing minor league baseball for the Asheville Tourists in the Colorado Rockies organization this summer. He said he wanted to come back to N.C. State this fall and attempt to lead the Wolfpack to an ACC championship.
He said he didn’t want to have the starting job handed to him on a silver platter, but wanted an equal chance to compete for it. Wilson said it didn’t appear that he would be given that chance.”

Thomas you say Wilson is a joke. The Falcons played a total of 2 playoff teams during the season. Seattle played 5 winning 4 of those and then played Washington and won. Seattle’s offense did not play against RGIII. They played against one of the best defenses against the run. Oops, the first qtr Seattle was stopped and then over the rest of the game Seattle ran over, around and thru Washington’s Defense.
The game was played on a crappy field. Seattle did not knock Griffin out of the game, he did it himself, on a crappy field. Washington’s running game which was suppose to trounce Seattle did not develop or was crushed.
Ryan may have done well this season but do not say Wilson is a joke. The let the Falcons focus on Lynch, that is what is expected.
Good luck with that. The Falcons only chance is to rip up the carpet in your dome and put down sand so Seattle will not get traction. Oops that was the deal last weekend. Washington did not do to well when Griffin fell because of the field.
Good luck on Sunday.

In general, agnostic means someone who doesn’t come down on either side of the debate (existence of God). Someone who is not committed. Like not committed to, or supporting or otherwise *caring* about a football team. So, “agnostic” is the more accurate word to use in your context. In any case, my point stands. JSS @ 3:23, that’s just sad. Is this what you live for? To be right on a blog? Here’s a thought for you: reality will be what it will be on Jan.13, but for now, I am expecting the team I support to play well and win. They are expecting to play well and win. And nobody knows what will happen. And if they don’t win, I will then deal with that reality. That’s what grown ups do.

“Grown-ups?”
What do you know of grown-ups? Dude, you sat here telling folks what the “perennial winners” as you called them (led by the antithesis of current post-season winning ) were going to do… SO, so, so grown-up…

I don’t think it fair that the Seahawks have to travel so far so often! It is a real disadvantage for Pete’s guys. The NFL should move the Seahawks to Oklahoma City immediately. The Supersonics have been transformed by their move and name change to the OKC Thunder.
The Seahawks would be in the center of the country with greatly reduced travel times, and I’m sure they would thrive as the Oklahoma City Cowgirls.

Kudos to the Falcons for making it to the divisional round of the playoffs for the second time in three years. Four playoff appearances and five straight winning seasons — perennial winners!
Dude, really, SMH. You are HOPELESS. Talking about what we think will happen or won’t happen is what ALL of us are doing.

Despite talk of Seattle’s east-coast road fatigue, Falcons will have to be at the absolute top of their game to win; Seattle is super hot and their recent successes have only spurred their momentum and confidence. The road factor and the jet lag should not be an issue with them.. Falcons are capable of winning, but again must put forth a first-class performance on all fronts. If they play indifferently or tentatively as has happened periodically throughout the season, it will be an embarrassment.

Just too much pressure for the Falcons to handle. Seattle will come in calm, confident and overwhelm Atlanta, even without their best pass rusher, but expect a big sack day from Irvin. Thomas & Sherman will snatch a couple of picks and the special teams will account for 1-2 scores and this game won’t be close. Hawks, 38- 17.
