Seattle tough but Falcons have some advantages (updated)

Are the Falcons ready for Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks? (AP photo)

Are the Falcons ready for Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks? (AP photo)

(Updated: 8:50 p.m. with opening odds.)

The Falcons last won a playoff game eight years ago (47-17 over St. Louis, Jan. 15, 2005). The have lost four straight since.

For that trend to change, they are going to have to beat a Seattle team that possesses: 1) a mobile quarterback (Russell Wilson); 2) a physical defense that held Washington to only 203 yards in offense (69 after the first two possessions); and 3) a powerful running game.

So you expected easy?

But after three playoff losses in the last four years, there are several positives for the Falcons going into their match-up against Seattle, which advanced after beating the Redskins 24-14 Sunday.

UPDATE: The Falcons have opened as only a two-point favorite over the Seahawks at LVH Superbook. Since home teams generally get three points, the line effectively means Seattle is considered one point “better” than Atlanta.

1.) Beat-up factor: The Seahawks are a tough team, as evidenced by them going 7-1 in the second half of the season after being only 4-4 at the turn, and then winning a road playoff game. But the question is: What do they have left in the tank after winning an emotional and physical game over the Redskins? The win in Washington did not come easy.

• 2.) Home field factor: The Falcons will be at home, where they’ve generally dominated: 7-1 this season and 33-7 in five regular seasons. (Then again, there was that lopsided playoff loss to Green Bay in 2010.) Seattle will be making its second East Coast trip in as many weeks from the upper left corner of the U.S. There’s a potential fatigue factor there.

• 3.) Mobile quarterback factor: The Falcons didn’t face Wilson this season. But they have played and beaten three noted mobile quarterbacks this year: Robert Griffin III, Cam Newton and Michael Vick (as well as Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Tony Romo, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning and Matthew Stafford). So as impressive a season as Wilson has had, he doesn’t present a challenge the Falcons haven’t seen.

• 4.) Julio and Roddy factor: As effective as Seattle’s defense was against the Redskins, it’s worth noting Washington moved the ball effectively early, before Griffin became too beat up to run and function in the pocket. The Falcons’ primary receiving trio of Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez still gives them an advantage that any defense is going to have difficulty dealing with.

• 5) Running game factor: This is Falcons’ biggest concern. Seattle can pound it with Marshawn Lynch (who rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown Sunday). Wilson gives the running game another dimension. If the Seahawks can run, they can control the clock and keep Matt Ryan and the offense on the sideline. The Falcons’ defense struggled against the run much of this season. They improved down the stretch, but then allowed 142 yards to Tampa Bay’s Doug Martin in the season finale. (We can debate how pumped the Falcons were for that meaningless game.) The Falcons’ own running game, meanwhile, has been ineffective for most of the season. They’ll need to get something from Michael Turner and Jacquizz Rodgers on the ground.

The Seahawks are good. But they look less daunting than the New York Giants or Green Bay Packers did the last two years.

Win or lose, we are still better off as a franchise in the long run than we have ever been.

Item – The QB that replaced the Dawg-Killer has led the team to record breaking winning seasons.

Item – The QB we shipped to Houston when we made the Dawg-Killer a “Falcon for Life” has his team in the Divisional Playoffs.

Item – Meanwhile, the Dawg-Killer has an uncertain future, and no current Head Coach.

No one else has a problem with the “folks” you keep referring to. Yet so many have a problem with you. It’s you, buddy. I’m sure I speak for the majority when I say, “why don’t you just leave? Don’t like this matchup for the Falcons. The Falcons can’t run the ball against anybody and the Seahawks can rush the passer and have an outstanding secondary. The Falcons can’t stop the run and the Seahawks can run it down your throat with Lynch. I think Seattle is tougher on both lines of scrimmage and that will determine the outcome of the game.

@ True Falcon Fan

You are so correct! Looks like the 2013 JS Blog is much the same as the 2012 JS Blog. Go figure!

Anyway about these Falcons, I know that we have some hidden jewels that we will produce in this game. I am looking at alot of Wide Receiver Screens and when those aggressive DB’s begin to bite on those, look for the Ice Man to go up top to Julio! I also have some ideas that we will use our out of the backfield screen passes as a BIG part of our running game. Still dont see us getting much from MT33 (although I hope I am DEAD WRONG) but I do see Quizz as well as Snelling making a differnece running the ball if given the chance ( and chance does not mean only 5 touches out of the backfield running).
About that D! Now this is where we get downright picky. I have to say that I do believe that Spoon will be eating for the next 2 weeks! This guy will have that motor running and our DLine has alot to prove. I think we get what we got from them in the first Tampa game that everyone said the MuscleHamster would run all over us. I do believe that Lynch will have a decent to good day, but I also believe that we will spy Wilson and give him fits with differnet looks. I think if we spy him correctly and not let him get outiside the pocket and make plays with his feet or do those dump off passes to the TE like he did the Skins then we will win by double digits. If he is able to play outside the pocket we win, but gosh it will be a tougher game than we want. A few things I noticed about the game with the Skins was that Wilson did not have a good first quarter and the Skins went away from doing what got them 14 points. They stopped running the ball and wanted RGIII to win the game for them. Not smart. I say if something works for us ( like the passing game) then Seattle sees the passing game alot on Sunday! Dont go away from it! Take big notes here as well. Seattle only put up 13 points in three quarters! I can say the reason that the got the other 11 points was because the Skins could not move the ball and get field position, and Seattle ended up with a short field the whole 4th quarter. Good D by Seattle but they also put up good D against a one leg QB! I say this much. When we win on Sunday many will overshadow this win and tell us how Seattle was over confident against a one-leg QB and therefore we should have beat a rookie QB on the road coming from the great northwest. The talk will go to San Fran or GB and how they will have a much more potent attack from a vet like Rogers or a Vet Defense like the 49ers have. Go figure, almost as bad as what is allowed to be said from specific people on the blog, but hey, Falcons have proved the naysayers wrong all year, maybe, just maybe Schultz steps up and proves me wrong……….dont wait on it right? LOL.

Lets RISE UP NATION……..We start today with the 12th man!!!! The Falcons Nest needs to rock from today until Sunday at 4!

Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts, also known as Doug Clark and his Hot Nuts, The Hot Nuts and, since the death of Doug Clark in 2002, Doug Clark’s Hot Nuts, is a rhythm and blues, rock and novelty band that has played party and club dates for more than fifty years. Starting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, they became famous on the college circuit in the southeastern United States in the early 1960s for their risqué song lyrics and jokes, and for allegedly performing in various states of undress. Their signature song was Hot Nuts. Other songs that they were known by included: My Ding-a-Ling, Big Jugs (based on Big Bad John), He’s Got the Whole World by the Balls, Baby Let Me Bang Your Box, The Bearded Clam (is a delicacy that won’t be found in the deep blue sea), Gay Caballero and Two Old Maids. It has been said that the Hot Nuts were the inspiration for the Otis Day and the Knights group in the movie Animal House. Their first album had a picture of the band on the cover, with Doug Clark “flipping the bird” to the audience. All of the Hot Nuts albums were on the “Gross” label, a subsidiary of Jubilee Records created solely for the band. Even though Jubilee published a line of “party” records with risqué material, the Jubilee name did not appear anywhere on the Gross albums. Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts influenced contemporary artists such as Too Short and Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

It was main stay song for many R&B artists who played the old Chittlin circuit… Doug Clark and his group didn’t drop it on vinyl until 1961… 9 years after it was originally recorded and popular on R&B radio… And more than 7 years after Berry started playing in 1954 when was with Johnnie Johnson… Do you even know who Dave Bartholomew is? I was at the redskins game and Im a falcons fan. what the falcons need to do is to stop the Seahawks running plays, On passing plays the redskins line men would get to the Seahawks QB (his name escapes me) but he would roll out of the pocket and either run it or throw it out or pass the ball, the redskins would block all of his passers when he would roll out of the pocket then he would run it which was a grave mistake that redskins couldn’t learn before it was to late. falcons defence needs to watch Seahawks QB when he rolls out of the pocket, they need to trap him force him to throw it and will cause a interception. Seahawks got nothing on Passing but shut down the run they got nothing on offence.

We have a good team with some weak spots. The other teams do too. This all boils down to whoever wants it the most & gets a few breaks. I do wish we had our RB’s (after initial passing blocks) go mid field across the line of scrmidge instead of sending them out wide. a Rodgers had a field day with that in his game with Minn.

Well…

Transplanted Seahawk,, spent the last two seasons living near Tampa, so I get coverage of the Falcons….but I still return for the occasional game (full disclosure: I appeared with the Blue Thunder Drum Line as Santa Claus a the Dec 23rd game)

You poor, poor ATL fans really have no idea what you’re in for.

First, the idea that dome noise is going to bother the Seahawks. As I said, I’ve appeared at the games on Christmas Eve as Santa. And I was there on Dec 23rd. I used to serve aboard an aircraft carrier that launched jets. It was louder _inside_ CenturyLink Field than on the flightline of the carrier. And that stadium has had a reputation for over a decade for being the place where false starts are born – consistently the most opponent false start penalties called against visitors of any venue. Trust me, guys, they know noise and are used to it.

As for your receivers matching up wth our corners… hmmm. Last time I checked, there were only six secondary backs who were 6-4 or taller – and three of them were on the Seahawks. They don;t just cover you, they smother you. Long reach, long wingspan, built for a division where they’d have to face Larry Fitzgerald twice a year. No quarterback all year has really lit the secondary up the way you think that you believe it will happen. But let’s call that even.

The fact is, we know you’re going to pass. We’re going to be keying on it. Because you have no run game. What made Washington’s run game effective in the first quarter was it was still out of the option. But when the option wasn’t available and Washington shifted into a more traditional drop-back passing attack, look what happened – lights out. You have no run game. So we know you will be passing.

Your only x-factor is Tony Gonzalez. He’s the wrinkle that will have the defensive coaches working tonight and tomorrow. But it’s a solvable wrinkle.

On defense, you can’t stop the run.

Yes, you had an admirable season. But against the softest schedule this year, you had to eek out multiple wins in the last few minutes. You became complacent in your final game of the season, and while I keep hearing the words “game that didn’t matter”, it was a game where your coach played his first team all game long.

And you still lost.

At home.

Can you win? Of course. It’s the NFL, and “Any Given Sunday” still has some cachet. But those who dismiss Russell Wilson as “just another clueless rookie quarterback,” who dismiss the defense that allowed the fewest points this season as “a bunch of high round draft pick and free agent wannabes” and the Seahawks as “a mediocre team that doesn’t deserve to even be in the playoffs” are missing probably the most important fact of all.

As of yesterday, that rookie quarterback, that group of free agent wannabes, yes, that mediocre team has more playoff wins this season (ONE) than your vaunted current group of champions does under this entire coaches’ tenure..

Talk is cheap.

But, hey, what do I know? I’m just Santa Claus.

P.S. And technically, we already know how to beat a team from the South when we didn’t supposedly have any talent. Don’t believe me? Ask some of your friends from NOLA if they remember what a “BeastQuake” is.

I’m quite amazed at some of the comments I read here from the Failcon fanbase.
Most of you are being quite dismissive when it comes to recognizing what your precious Failcons are up against come this Sunday so I’ll lay it out for you.
Six weeks ago the Seahawks went into Chicago and mauled a pretty good Bear team in front of the fans there who appeared to be stunned at what had just happened to them.
We came home and hung a 58 / 0 number on the Cards the following week.
Following that rout the Hawks travelled to Toronto to bully and stomp the Bills easily…another road win from a team that most had doubts could win on the road.
Then the big one…The Seahawks completely demolish the Forty-whiners on national tv 42 / 13 and leave ‘whiner coach Jim Hairball in such a state of disarray he refused to shake hands with Pete Caroll following the game. A petty and childlike move to say the least.
The Seahawks then close out the regular season with a very convincing win over a Rams team that beat the Forty-whiners once and tied them the other.

At this point the Hawk’s are managing to garner a modicum of respect from some of the sportswriters around the country and have the un-divided attention of ALL the coaching staffs in their path.
Jeff Schultz …..Not so much.

The fact that we held the Redskins scoreless after the first quarter while our offense basically had their way with the ’skins defense for three quarters should give y’all a clue as to what’s a-comin’ your way very soon. And for those that claim that we only won because RG III was hobbled you need to remember that he doesn’t play defense.

This I will guarantee you Failcon fans….
The Seahawks hae earned the respect they deserve from the coaching staff in Atlanta and I’m positive that they are taking this game VERY seriously.

We’ll be here doing our homework and studying on ways to beat you that you Failcon fans have never dreamed of.
When we start chewing up huge amounts of real estate using the read option with Marshawn (The Beast ) Lynch and Russell Wilson don’t try to say you weren’t fairly warned.
When your WR’s are left laying on the field with the wind knocked out of them by our monster corners and safeties don’t say you weren’t fairly warned.

When Matt Ryan is pounded to the turf multiple times by our D-line corner blitzes and totally dissappears under the massive weight and size of Big Red Bryant don’t say you weren’t fairly warned.

Seahawks 27 ….. Failcons 13……Go Hawks!

If it was not a racial post as you whine now it wasn’t, when you wrote it in a fit of rage at 8:22 am in reply to Larry who said your original post was a racial post, then why was it removed ?

I’ve never seen a more racial post on these blogs in my lifetime, and I’ve posted here since AccessAtlanta days back when they were called Forums, not Blogs, which was 30 years’ ago.

If it’s not racial, then why did you insist on ADDING BACK to what Larry left-out, the ENTIRE exact racial post you stated you originally wrote in here, which Jeff Schultz missed when you wrote it the 1st time ?

If it’s not racial, then why does it have a racial bias directly in the 4th word JSS ?

I’m tired of it JSS. You come in here where Falcons are talking about the most important Play-Off Game in the Entire Arthur Blank Era, against a good team with a top-notch running game, mobile quarterback, and a tough defense against both the run and the pass, and

ALL YOU DO

So, if it’s not racial, then post it again. You should have no problem pasting that racial post again, since you can recall to Larry exactly precisely what exact 5-word racial post you posted to Larry, correcting Larry to not leave out the 4th word.

Go ahead, since it’s not racial.

Seahawks fan here. I don’t know who some of these other supposed Seahawks fans are on this board, but some of them sound like rude trolls. If you’re a troll, get off the board. Have some class, for cryin’ out loud. Seahawks do have a chance to win in Atlanta, but missing Clemmons plus having jet lag from travelling so far after this week’s game in DC will be a factor. If the Seahawks can establish a strong running game, I believe the Hawks win. Our defense might bend, but they probably won’t break (they make good adjustments), so the Falcons’ offense does have a test coming up. The Falcons have to stop Lynch and make Wilson beat them with his arm and his running. This Seahawks team is unlike any we’ve had in the past. It’s exciting times having a team that can win on the road. Looking forward to a tough and close game with the Falcons. Good luck next Sunday!
