LIVE: Georgia tries to forget SEC ending, close with win

ORLANDO — When asked the other day if he viewed this season as a missed opportunity to win SEC and BCS championships, Georgia coach Mark Richt said, “Every year is a missed opportunity, I think.” And that’s probably the right thing to say, even if it’s not every season the Bulldogs come within one tipped pass of winning the SEC title and going to the BCS championship game.

When Georgia faces Nebraska today in the Capital One Bowl, the question is whether we’ll witness any hangover from the last game. The Dogs (11-2, coming off a 32-28 loss to Alabama, No. 7 BCS) may be a more talented team than the Cornhuskers (10-3, coming off a 70-31 loss to Wisconsin, No. 16 BCS). But that doesn’t always mean anything in bowl games. Witness Georgia Tech vs. USC. Or witness Georgia’s last two bowl efforts — losses to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl two years ago and Michigan State in the Outback last season.

I ran into this guy in the parking lot. Who's his dentist?

I ran into this guy in the parking lot. Who's his dentist?

OK, a few quick things about today’s game and then I’ll open the cyber-venting lines:

– The Dogs’ defensive front will have to put up a better effort than it did against Alabama (350 yards rushing). Nebraska ranks ninth in the nation in rushing at 254.5 yards per game but only 81st passing, although quarterback Taylor Martinez has thrown 21 touchdown passes.

– The defensive line will be missing nose tackle John Jenkins, who is academically ineligible, and possibly end Abry Jones (ankle), who is questionable. Kwame Geathers will start for Jenkins.

– Nebraska’s defense ranks first against the pass, but that’s a little misleading. Opponents seldom have had to throw against the Huskers because they’re so weak against the run (97th, 194.8 per game). Also, the Big Ten is not full of wide open offenses. So expect a heavy dose of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall today.

Final thought: I think Georgia wins today. Finishing the year with a win and losing the last two bowl games should be motivation enough. A victory also could leave the Dogs as one of the top five ranked teams in the nation.

But if Georgia players are thinking about the SEC championship or the NFL draft, everything goes out the window, and they’ll lose today.

What are your thoughts? The floor is yours.

I agree. Which Georgia team will show up? The one that should be playing Jan 7th or the one that lets lesser teams play to their level?

UGA should win without much stress, a loss will set back UGA for years and restart the erosion of Mark Richt once again.

I am sure they would like to forget it as well. The problem is that writers like you and Bradley keep the story in motion and won’t let them forget about it. You guys are causing Murray the Midget to have sleepless nights.

You young pup moron, you must have never played the game and understand how a program really works, losing key players, losing two back to back game( if they lose today-which they should not) and while having key coaches leave places extraordinary burden on players. Why don’t you take off those Dawg colored glasses, get out to other schools games and see how the rest of the world lives.

No wonder people like you give Georgia fans a bad name.

There are some great UGa fans on these blogs that like and understand me and like to joke around. To UGa fans good luck today I hope you have a good game. Now for many of the UGa fans that can’t take a joke or Call for the coaches to be fired every other play during the LIVE Blogs to you I say I hope the Dwags lose. I hope you stay upset and keep up the self-loathing that seems to make you happy. I don’t like everything that happens at Tech but I don’t throw my team or coaches under the bus at every perceived mistake.

For you Great Dawg Alum and Fans…………Beat Nebraska

For Thomas Brown and other Self-Loathing Dawg fans I hope you get your wish and the Mutts get their butts kicked.

I know that writers need to keep bringing up the SECCG to get a rise out of fans, but any good football team should have a memory like a baseball closer. When the game is over and you lost, move on and get ready for the next one. There is nothing you can gain by going over the “what ifs” forever. Georgia should win this one today unless they are still thinking about how close they got to beating Alabama.
Meanwhile, congrats to Tech for winning for the state of GA and beating Lane Kiffen and sending his Dad back to the pros with that loss.

So tired of hearing “What if UGA comes out flat or doesn’t show up”. “What is their mindset” SHUT UP! It’s a chance to win another football game. The final game of the year. You always want to head into next season with a win. Even extra incentive is that we’ll likely finish as a top 5 team and also start next season in the top 5 for another national championship run. Let’s Go Dawgs!

Steve…………say that if it makes you feel better about the Boise St, UCF, MSU, USCe losses UGa has.

UCF……Michigan State…….is that how you EXPLAIN or EXCUSE the UGa bowl losses?

Jason

Yeah Steve Florida will be good but they are losing their top tailback (Gilislee) and a handful of defensive players. Could also lose their TE Jordan Reed. Georgia is losing a lot on defense but would that be a bad thing? Sometimes it’s not all about the big names. Just 11 guys willing to play hard.

With big John Jenkins out of the game someone has to step up big to fill his shoes because Nebraska is definitely a run first offense.

I think UGa players should think like a Hooker. When it is over you move on the the next PAID EZ win and KNOW you are not going the live the PRETTY WOMAN movie fantasy of getting to the BCS CG. Cash the check and take you Screwing put on clean make-up and do it again. :)

T_Height, I actually think Kwame Geathers is stronger than Jenkins. He was pushing All-American center and Rimington Tropy Winner Barrett Jones backwards the entire game in the SEC championship. I think we’ll be fine without Jenkins. Jenkins wasn’t getting as much push as Geathers in the SECCG.

The big difference this year is we have a ridiculous running game. Gurley and Marshall are going to look like blurs to Nebraska. Our dynamic rushing attack will also open up the play action and give Murray some nice highlights to give to the starving NFL scouts to choke on come April. Russell Wilson is REALLY helping Murray’s Pro stock. If Aaron shows off his arm on some deep routes, he could jump to the 2nd Round easily.
