LIVE: Georgia tries to forget SEC ending, close with win

ORLANDO — When asked the other day if he viewed this season as a missed opportunity to win SEC and BCS championships, Georgia coach Mark Richt said, “Every year is a missed opportunity, I think.” And that’s probably the right thing to say, even if it’s not every season the Bulldogs come within one tipped pass of winning the SEC title and going to the BCS championship game.
When Georgia faces Nebraska today in the Capital One Bowl, the question is whether we’ll witness any hangover from the last game. The Dogs (11-2, coming off a 32-28 loss to Alabama, No. 7 BCS) may be a more talented team than the Cornhuskers (10-3, coming off a 70-31 loss to Wisconsin, No. 16 BCS). But that doesn’t always mean anything in bowl games. Witness Georgia Tech vs. USC. Or witness Georgia’s last two bowl efforts — losses to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl two years ago and Michigan State in the Outback last season.

OK, a few quick things about today’s game and then I’ll open the cyber-venting lines:
– The Dogs’ defensive front will have to put up a better effort than it did against Alabama (350 yards rushing). Nebraska ranks ninth in the nation in rushing at 254.5 yards per game but only 81st passing, although quarterback Taylor Martinez has thrown 21 touchdown passes.
– The defensive line will be missing nose tackle John Jenkins, who is academically ineligible, and possibly end Abry Jones (ankle), who is questionable. Kwame Geathers will start for Jenkins.
– Nebraska’s defense ranks first against the pass, but that’s a little misleading. Opponents seldom have had to throw against the Huskers because they’re so weak against the run (97th, 194.8 per game). Also, the Big Ten is not full of wide open offenses. So expect a heavy dose of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall today.
Final thought: I think Georgia wins today. Finishing the year with a win and losing the last two bowl games should be motivation enough. A victory also could leave the Dogs as one of the top five ranked teams in the nation.
But if Georgia players are thinking about the SEC championship or the NFL draft, everything goes out the window, and they’ll lose today.

I know that writers need to keep bringing up the SECCG to get a rise out of fans, but any good football team should have a memory like a baseball closer. When the game is over and you lost, move on and get ready for the next one. There is nothing you can gain by going over the “what ifs” forever. Georgia should win this one today unless they are still thinking about how close they got to beating Alabama.
Meanwhile, congrats to Tech for winning for the state of GA and beating Lane Kiffen and sending his Dad back to the pros with that loss.

Yeah Steve Florida will be good but they are losing their top tailback (Gilislee) and a handful of defensive players. Could also lose their TE Jordan Reed. Georgia is losing a lot on defense but would that be a bad thing? Sometimes it’s not all about the big names. Just 11 guys willing to play hard.

T_Height, I actually think Kwame Geathers is stronger than Jenkins. He was pushing All-American center and Rimington Tropy Winner Barrett Jones backwards the entire game in the SEC championship. I think we’ll be fine without Jenkins. Jenkins wasn’t getting as much push as Geathers in the SECCG.

The big difference this year is we have a ridiculous running game. Gurley and Marshall are going to look like blurs to Nebraska. Our dynamic rushing attack will also open up the play action and give Murray some nice highlights to give to the starving NFL scouts to choke on come April. Russell Wilson is REALLY helping Murray’s Pro stock. If Aaron shows off his arm on some deep routes, he could jump to the 2nd Round easily.

Bobo and Richt have this thing that requires them to think they can out smart the defense thus they throw the dayum ball when most smart folks would run when you have a great back like Gurley. odds are 100% those two will do the same again. Those two are afraid to run the ball 3 times in a row and punt then go do the same thing again. Nick Saban will do it 3 times in a row because he knows leaning on you will take a toll in the 4th qtr but Richt and Bobo aren’t that smart and that is why you can’t beat the better teams.

On another note, I expect Alabama to run all over Notre Dame. Notre Dame’s front four hasn’t seen an O-line like Bama has with three All-Americans. And one has the potential to be another All-American. That’s as close to an NFL O-line as you’ll see in college football. Big, strong, physical, hit you in the mouth.

Will, the fans at most schools would be happy to play AL so close, possibly win 12 games and finish in top 10, especially after that awful night in Columbia. I can only think of 3 coaches(Saban, Meyer, Spurrier, not sure about Miles) who are better than Richt and our chances of hiring one of them(and we wouldn’t want Spurrier) are nil. Look at TN and Auburn(and Tech) and be very thankful for Mark Richt!

And another national championship for us- its getting to be an expectation now , we’ve been there and done that throughout history. There have really been some sorry bowl games this year so far. Didn’t use to be that way. For instance what’s a high-ranked team like GA doing playing a low-ranked team like Nebraska? Also, you have the same thing with Florida and Louisville. They have this bowl thing so screwed up, hope it straightens out next year.

Again, UGA looks like they didn’t prepare for the bowl game. Did anybody tell UGA that this was a running team and that Neb. could complete some passes. This cannot happen next season. They start with Clemson and S.C.. Still too many missed assignments on defense. Too much talent for them to play this way. I think the OL forgot how to block and the coaches still can’t make adjustments. Murray does it again and the Nebraska coaches made the proper adjustments. Being outcoached again. Did UGA equipment guy bring the right shoes. Already 5 players have slipped in the 1st quarter. Please Murray, do the Dawgnation a favor and do not return. Need a better decision maker at the QB spot.

1. Why didn’t CMR go for 2 pt conversion on the 1st TD? rather be up 10-0 or 8-0 than 9-0. (9 is limbo…seems like more more in-game mismanagement by CMR)

Our O-line is garbage. I hope these guys are put through competition drills in the offseason and put to the test. They are horrible. Can’t sustain blocks in the run game, can’t pass protect even against a smallish defense. Bama’s O-line dominates people. Rarely, if ever, do you see Alabama’s O-line straight up whipped. Why can’t we get the O-line they have?

If we look sloppy on D with all of these guys leaving, then maybe we’ll have a bunch of guys who play smarter and together on D next season? After all, if our defensive players had played their roles better in 2012, we’d have one of the best defenses in the history of our program. The talent is huge, but the commitment to focus on the task at hand has been inconsistent. Some of that comes from the top, but a lot of that comes from the players we target in recruiting. I’m interested to see the type of mental makeup of the players we bring in with Rodney Garner out of the program. I know that aspect can improve.

In the offseason we need some upgrades on both lines of scrimmage. Need some of these O-line recruits to come in and compete right away. Laremy Tunsil would be a HUGE pickup and would start day 1 at LT. Wish we could find a Chance Warmack type of guard and a Barrett Jones type at center. David Andrews is a fat pud in a football suit.

Can we officially, call Aaron Murray…. Aaron “Pick 6″ Murray? I mean come on, seriously what is this like his 6th career pick 6 int, and what is 3rd in bowl games? He is the textbook opposite of “clutch”. The funny thing is fans actually think we could have beat Notre Dame with Murray. Not a Chance. He has failed in both SEC Championship Games, all 3 bowl games, against SC all 3 years, against Boise, against Florida all 3 years. I am including even wins like this year against FLA, because he still had 3 turnovers and only 150 yards. He is just not great or even mediocre in big games, he is terrible. Why does anyone want him back? Oh, because he racks up big yards against the Kentucky’s and Vanderbilt’s of the world….I forgot. Even if we beat Nebraska, it will be because of our defense forcing turnovers and our running game…Not Murray. Now watch some fan come on here and say, yeah but he passed for 300 yards and blah blah 2 touchdowns. Yet they fail to mention the 2 interceptions already (its not even halftime as I type this). And they think he can play like this in a National Championship game and win? Give me a break. Aaron Murray, the guy who WON ONE Big time game in 3 years at UGA (and that was thanks to 6 Gator turnovers). I’m done.

The only fair thing is if Aaron Murray unfortunately returns for his Senior year, there needs to be an open competition at QB. It’s just not fair to the fans or the team, to trot out a loser, game after game, season after season, while giving nobody else a chance to play quaterback for the University of Georgia. Perhaps, if Richt had played a winner like Hutson Mason, Georgia could be winning the big games against Alabama and LSU. We will never know unfortunately, because Richt is oppossed to winning big games, that’s why we “get” to see the Loser Aaron Murray every game. Fire Richt. Bench Murray. Bench Grantham, until he learns that giving up 300 plus rushing yards a game with 9 NFL players on your defense is unnacceptable at the college level.

50 Ways, UGA not motivated because they wanted to be in the BCS championship game or at least a BCS bowl. Nebraska is motivated because they want to make up for the embarrassing loss to Wisconsin. Plus, UGA does not have a good record in bowl games for the last several years nor a good record against ranked teams. I predicted to my friends that this would be a close game, and possible a Nebraska upset. As a big UGA fan, I hoped I was wrong.

Three years starting and Murray looks lost. Didn’t learn anything from the SECCG. He still does not know about clock management. Horrible coaching on both sides of the ball and both lines look like crap. Start the 2013 season at 0-2. Mark it down. I said and if you don’t like it, get a reality check. Nothing will change on either side of the coaching staff. I agree with Garner, UGA has too much money not to bring in top tier coaching for all their sports program. I haven’t seen anything in this game to show where it will get better next season. Murray has done whatever he does, now do the fans a favor and move on so someone with better skill can take over and Grantham has to make some kind of changes on this defense so that it will get better. Right now this is not a BCS caliber team. BCS talent, but not BCS coaching.

When Murray is bad, he’s beyond terrible; but he’s still the most prolific passer in the history of the SEC no matter what the Haters post. Who misses worse today…Aaron Murray trying to hit recievers or Marshall Morgan trying to hit a field goal? Also, Grantham is laughing all the way to the Bank with Mark Richt, after getting his raise. Now his defense couldn’t stop a high school rushing attack, let alone a Nebraska or Alabama running game. This program is sliding quickly down the slope of mediocrity. Mark Richt on UGA committing so many penalties
Sometime late in the game Gary and Verne mentioned UGA always being one of the most penalized teams. They went on to say that Richt suggested that it’s not a problem. What coach would think that way? Can you imagine Coach Saban saying that committing a lot of penalties is not a problem? The Dawgs are always loaded with talent. Talent isn’t the reason they can’t get over the hump. Mark Richt will not win a national title if he continues to field an undisciplined team. And I wonder how many of his starters will be suspended for the first game or two next season?

There are severe problems at GA. Yes, I understand we have won a lot of games the last 2 years. Outside of FL, this year, we have not beaten a good team. Although we came close with AL, our Program is light years away from the AL Program & yes, LSU. Is it Coaching? Grantham has vastly unachieved with a # of NFL players. Bobo runs Marshall up the middle & gets no yards. Marshall is not an inside runner against a good defense. In fact we cannot run the ball, period, when we really need to. Something is wrong when Gurley can’t get one to two yards. It took forever to get the tight ends involved. WHY? How many Fullback carries do we have this year? Murray, to be so smart, makes a lot of dumb plays. Going to the NFL this year, you have to be kidding. Also I still don’t know who is calling what on the offensive plays. CMR is constantly talking into his headphone when we are on offense. Who is he talking to? I feel the same way about Smart at AL. I think Saban is very involved & I believe keeps Smart on a very short chain.I am also tired of hearing a propect that we want say”Well GA got in too late.” I know we don’t oversign, but come on. I’m glad Garner is gone. I think the Top Recruting Bus ran over his foot several years ago. In fact, he may be driving a bus after his stint at Auburn. We have to recruit more GA Players that are getting away. Many never had GA on their list. Why is that? We run a Pro Type offense & defense & send a lot of people to the Pros. I know we can’t get them all, but we are not even close on some top GA players. Hell, I just don’t know, but something is very wrong at GA. By the way, Nebraska is not a good team. Is CMC the problem? I honestly don’t know. Do you replace him? Well, who do you hire?

It’s halftime. Murray has thrown two touchdowns but believe it or not has not thrown one accurate pass.On the catches that have been made, the receivers have bailed him out. Also I noticed Marshall falling down on the first two runs. Apparently they aren’t wearing the right shoes for this turf. He fell down again as Murray’s pass went overhead and ended up as a pick six. The defense? Great atheles? What a laugh. If the athletes are that good then the coaching is that bad. We’re being outplayed by lesser athletes and out coached at the moment.

On the few replays I ave seen of passes downfield, the receivers seem to run their routes and stop instead of coming back to the ball when Murray is flushed from the pocket. Of course, being 40 yards down field isn’t helping.

This is a pathetic defensive showing. The DL outweighs some of the Neb. OL by 60lbs and they are just laying on them. There is no penetration into the backfield and they are getting gashed. Great, another bowl loss for UGA. Need a new coaching staff. So what if they won 11 games. They looked bad winning and losing. This game is EXACTLY the reason why a lot of UGA fans are fed up with CMR.
Georgia is playing uninspired, undisciplined, inconsistent on offense, horrible on defense and that’s the players.
Coaching has been poor, more bad clock management and I don’t see any adjustments in the 2nd half so far…
ALL of this against a mediocre at best Nebraska team.

This game is eerily like the 2007 Capital One bowl. That game Florida ranked in the top 6, rolled in with Tim Tebow and were 17 point faviorites over a Michigan team that had lost to Appalachian State & their Head coach Lloyd Carr was playing his last game because he had been fired. Michigan won 41-35. Deja Vu, 6 yrs later. On a bright note, Florida won the BCS National Championship 53 weeks later… Jeff where’s my shout out?

When UGA has been matched up against good teams, all 7 of them, the past 2 seasons, the Dawgs are NOT good. But vs. the 20 chumps the Dawgs look unbeatable.

I seldom post on here but I’m going to say this. Believe or not, I don’t care. I have been saying for years that UGA will never win anything of consequence with Richt as their coach. When I first started making that statement, others would tell me I was crazy. Yes, he did win 2 SEC championships, but look at the rest of the league back then. No Alabama, no South Carolina, Florida had Ron Zook (and Richt still couldn’t beat the Gators), Tennessee was down. LSU was not great for those two years either. I remember the year UGA lost to UF with Shockley out of the game with an injurey. Tereshinkski was the backup QB and Richt would not let him throw the ball. So why was he the backup QB. Richt never has another QB ready to step in and play. The level of talent UGA gets is very good. But what happens to that talent? Brandon Smith was a very highly recruited player and in my opinion never lived up to his billing. Where is Ray Drew? What has happened to him? Why was the every starting offensive line position up for grabs for this bowl game, yet the quarterback position is never questioned? I’m not saying Mason would be better, but he will never get the chance. Remember Joe Cox? Never was his job in jeopardy. Once Richt decides who he thinks should be playing, that player’s position seems to be safe regardless of how bad that player performs. And every year this team gets completely embarrassed at least once in a big game. I know everyone was so proud of how UGA played in the SECCG, but I was furious. I have never seemed so many people happy to accept defeat. Richt seems completely overmatched by other coaches. When it’s a big game he seems to have no idea what to do when the game is on the line. And why does it seem that every year UGA has to rebuild the offensive line? I believe Richt is a good Christian man, but he does not have what it takes to be a big-time coach. Even Bobby Bowden questioned UGA when they hired him. He said he didn’t know if Richt had what it took to be successful as a head coach. Richt is a good coach, just not good enough to compete with the great coaches of the SEC. One last point, how many of Richt’s assistants are hired by other schools? Not many. I know some of you living in fantasy land will criticize this post, but the facts speak for themselves.
