Georgia projects well for 2013, even with flaws in win

ORLANDO – The players wore hats reading “CHAMPIONS” in all cap letters. The fact that “Capital One Bowl” — and not SEC or BCS — also was stitched on the caps in a much smaller script might deflate that declaration a bit, but it doesn’t take away from where Georgia may be headed.

Were the Bulldogs great in their final game of the 2012 season? Hardly. The defense, purported to be loaded with NFL talent, too often played sloppy and undisciplined. The quarterback, Aaron Murray, threw two interceptions in the team’s first three possessions. It is what happens sometimes in bowl games. The Dogs didn’t save their best for last. Their best came in the next-to-last game against Alabama.

But ultimately, what came out of Georgia’s 45-31 win over Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl were signs that this program isn’t likely to take a step back next season.

There will be new players. There will be a different team personality. The schedule will be tougher. But the Bulldogs just finished a season that saw them go 12-2 and come within five yards of winning the SEC championship and going to the BCS title game. They rebounded from the crushing loss in the SEC championship game to win a significant bowl game. They showed resiliency by losing two starting wide receivers (Marlon Brown, Michael Bennett) during the season and a third in Tuesday’s game (Malcolm Mitchell). They endured several early season suspensions on defense and played without two defensive starters against Nebraska (John Jenkins, Abry Jones).

Jarvis Jones and several defensive starters now are expected to leave for the NFL. Maybe Murray comes back, but probably not. But Georgia is in a good place now, a player again on the national scene, and nobody could have seen that coming two years ago in Memphis when the team schlepped off the field a loser to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl, dragging a 6-7 record.

“The seniors started a legacy here,” freshman running back Todd Gurley said Tuesday. “They’re passing it down to us, and we’re just going to keep moving forward and winning each year. I know a lot of teams will have the goal of going to the national championship next year, but we really believe that. We’re going to bring in a great recruiting class and we’re going to get it done next year.”

Todd Gurley, here breaking through for a 24-yard touchdown, finished with 125 yards rushing to lead the Bulldogs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Todd Gurley, here breaking through for a 24-yard touchdown, finished with 125 yards rushing to lead the Bulldogs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

As flawed as the Dogs looked against Nebraska, the result and the season projected well for the future.

It starts with the two freshmen in the backfield, Gurley and Keith Marshall. There were questions about the running game going into the season following the excommunication of Isaiah Crowell, but the two quickly eased concerns. In the final game of the season, Gurley rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and Marshall made a difficult back-shoulder, 24-yard touchdown catch to give the Dogs a 38-31 lead early in the fourth quarter.

There’s the future.

It doesn’t matter if the starting quarterback is Murray or Hutson Mason. Georgia’s offense should function well, and the team should be in the middle of things again.

When asked about Marshall’s catch, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said, “We’ve kept things pretty simple for him and Todd because they’re freshmen. But that play there gives us a level of confidence next year that we can expand their package.”

Gurley, Bobo said, brought “a physicality to the offense that we needed. He did a great job leading us as a freshman. I told him after the game, ‘You had a great year, but now you have a chance to be great. So let’s go to work.’”

Marshall said he battled knee tendinitis before the season, affecting his workouts. “I lost some of my explosiveness,” he said. “But it’s finally feeling better. I’m looking forward to getting started on my workouts.”

And then this: “Honestly, I feel we’re the best team in the country. We can play with anybody. We were one play away this year.”

There were hiccups Tuesday. The first half took nearly two hours. The two teams combined for 47 points, five offensive touchdowns, three interceptions (including Nebraska’s pick-six against Murray), a field goal and a blocked punt for a safety. The Dogs trailed 24-23, then 31-23. But Murray, after starting 11 for 24, stopped scaring NFL scouts. He connected with Chris Conley for a 49-yard touchdown, then later scrambled away from pressure to connect with Marshall. Later, he found Conley again on a “jailbreak screen” against Nebraska’s blitz — nice call by Bobo – for an 87-yard score. Checkmate.

It ended well. There’s reason to believe it could end well next season, too.

If Murray stays, it’s going to be hell to pay for SEC defenses or anybody else. With another offseason Murray will only get stronger, even more accurate, more power behind his throws, trust his O-line more (who by the way, will be intact next year), get more chemistry with Mitchell, Conley, Bennett, Tibbs, Scott-Wesley and BOTH Tight Ends, and get more in tune with Gurley and Marshall. UGA’s offense is going to be damn near unstoppable next year, if and only if, Murray returns.

Vandy hired a coach. A real coach. A coach who will sign a top 15 recruiting class at a top tier academic school. A coach who won 9 games at a place with zero football history EVER.

That’s why Vandy is better than Tech. That’s why Vandy will end the year ranked.

Stanford had more than 1 year. Harbaugh left, no dropoff. Run a prostyle offense. Have NFL players on the OL and at TE. Just put the QB in the NFL and he has his team in the playoffs.

Keep pretending that Stanford is a one hit wonder. All you are doing is refusing to admit that high level college football can be done with high level academics.

UAB and Tulane do not have fans (both of them) in our blogs every day telling us how great they are at Georgia Tech and why their other sports graduate 73 % and football only 45 %.

UAB and Tulane are not in the ACC but in the Conference USA. 1 supposedly is a BCS Conference, UAB and Tulane are not.

Georgia Tech is 35-13 vs Tulane and hasn’t played UAB I recall.

Read this article:
http://blogs.ajc.com/georgia-tech-sports/2012/12/25/tech-2008-signing-class-delivers-in-classroom/

The graduation problem is a thing of the past. CPJ has a much higher emphasis on academics than the previous coaches. The graduation rate will rise in the future and hopefully the Hill will reward the football team with a few special admissions.

Hey Thomas B, compare the UGA stats vs top teams with the rest of the top tier SEC…that’s the problem. I’m not saying get rid of CMR or that UGA is not good. Just pointing out the fact that all the traditional power SEC teams have NC/undefeated seasons since the BCS has been in place. Except UGA. Most had a grueling schedule during their champ season. UGA has had the benefit of scheduling as well as down division and top tier recruiting. When everything is said and done, CMR has 2 SEC champs the last one in 2005. All the SEC power teams have at least 2 SEC champs. 2 SEC champs is nothing to brag about unless you are comparing UGA to the bottom half of the SEC. To date, UGA is not, has not and I have no reason to believe that UGA will be NC material under CMR.

Loved the victory, sis boom ba, yaddy yaddy, ad nauseum. One thought. Kwami Geathers played more like Kawmi Brown. A big ole’ giant bust. He was squarely blown off the ball by an offensive line he outweighed 50 to 80 pounds any way you count ‘em. It’s a good thing he has a reverse gear or he’d have been DOA. Mr. Geathers, as big as you are — I don’t know personally — but you appear physically behind every single other defensive lineman the Dogs have. You are by far slower and weaker at fighting off blocks. While huge is huge for a lineman, son, you need to lose about 30 pounds, live in the weight room and do laps around the practice field pulling tractor tires. I watched Jumpy as a Falcon and he was ridiculous and nearly as bit though not an ounce of fat. Heck man, your thighs rub so hard together it’s lucky you didn’t start a brush fire chasing some of those runners. I’m by no means hating on him, I want only the best for the young man, but it’s painfully obvious that he’s not even close to being ready for the NFL if he’s getting smaked around by those smallish Nebraska linemen.. “nuf sed.

Well, I am not asking for a national championship from our guys, coaches, and program. I am asking that they beat top team, and they did that in 2012. We have every reason to suspect being ranked higher than every opponent on our tough 2013 schedule in the preseason polls out already for 2013, that we will beat top team again 2013 if we just emphasize the run a lot more to protect our defense.

That’s all I ask of us.

If you want a national championship, and that is your goal, maybe Alabama is a better team to root for.

I am a Bulldog.

I root for Alabama when they play Notre Dame, like I did when they beat LSU last year and Texas 2 years before that. I even rooted for Alabama against Michigan State in 2010. I am rooting for Florida tonight like I did when they beat Florida State (FSU.) This is not the PAC-12 here. You can root for other SEC teams because we know we’re the # 1 conference and this gave us this chance I went to at the Dome 5 Saturdays ago. We were # 2 in 2007 and # 3 in 2002. Yes, I wish we hadn’t lost to 6-6 South Carolina 2007 and to unranked also in any poll Florida in 2002. I have no wishes about whom I wish we had not have lost to in 2012. I am happy. I am satisfied. I am fine with 2012 as a Great Season and the win over # 4 Florida as the BEST WIN in the Mark Richt era. A season in which we had a GREAT SEASON 2012, we beat # 4 Florida. I have asked for that and that only, and to beat a top team at the end of the season on the national stage in a bowl game, which Mark Richt has NOT done yet.

I want us to do that, too.

NC ?

I am not saying I am not interested in it.

I am saying it is NOT my goal.

This is my alma mater. I root for us whether they are good or not. I don’t root against them to have the coach fired. I might not think the coach is the sharpest knife in the drawer; but, I root for us.

And, I try to tell him and what David Pollack calls the blind homers he detests so much, the areas where he and we need to improve upon for the next season.

If that takes Shawn Williams’ type speeches, then fine : I’m all in for that. How’d that turn out for us ?

Best win in Mark Richt era.

In a GREAT SEASON for us.

If you want more than this, I am happy for you.

I secretly would love to see it too. I think we need to improve upon many areas I have detailed in specific gruesome research I have provided to these blogs for years what we need to do to do that.

We aren’t there yet.

Our coach is young. He’s not coached before. This is his only gig. If he would’ve had Vince Dooley teach him what I have tirelessly pointed out, but Mike Adam$ prevented that, he might have beat Alabama 5 Saturdays ago.

I said pre-game run the ball.

I said pre-game they only run the ball.

I said pre-game if we run the ball, Aaron Murray will be the difference in our favor.

They’re not real smart, you do know this, right ?

They did not run the ball and nearly proved me wrong that they could use 1 RB and him up the middle in a we run the ball time or 2, and flung the tater all over the place, as they are wont to do.

He has other holes, his coaching staff comes to mind.

And, his star QB only playing comes to mind.

And, this walk-ons on special teams I still saw out there yesterday again while our opponents get after it with their stars. He did some more of this 2012.

He will learn these lessons.

Either here or at his next gig, if he doesn’t become a full-time minister which is his real calling.

I like the guy.

The kids LOVE him.

I like watching the talent.

I like seeing them recruit top classes for me to watch and them to go to the NFL.

I also want to win.

Win all 14 ?

Not in 2013.

11-3 in 2013. Sorry, no NC. But, hopefully, we can beat a team like # 7 pre-season 2013 Florida, or # 10 pre-season 2013 South Carolina, or # 1 pre-season 2013 Alabama, or # 3 LSU although that pre-season 2013 ranking is going down, or # 8 preseason 2013 Texas A and M and beat # 13 pre-season 2013 Clemson. If you want 14-0, try FSU’s schedule in the stinking ACC where they did not deserve a BCS Bowl bid, and neither did Northern Illinois or Louisville, or 6-Loss Wisconsin unranked in any poll.

Life is not fair.

Life is life.

Just beat the heck out of somebody, anybody, and play your SEC Schedule and be happy with our program 2012.

We did what I asked of the men and coaches.

I predicted no NC for 2012 and predict none for 2013.

We have issues in our program which must be addressed.

I have detailed those and do so on a daily basis in here.

But, I am not looking or demanding a NC.

Wish I could.

1 day, maybe ?

Georgia CLEARLY was the best win by Alabama 2012.

That is pretty sad for a National Title contender.

GT and GT Bob, you are the guys that should know of cupcake schedules. I was wondering how tech could outdo Presbyterian and middle tennessee. Amazingly they have added Elon and Alabama (AM) to Duke and Virginia.

All 10 times you have

DUCKED THE ISSUE.

I haven’t ducked the issue at all. I acknowledged that GT has been poor in graduating football players in the past and that CPJ has done well to improve that. It is embarrassing and our recruiting has suffered because of it. You seem to want to completely ignore the fact that GT is a hard school in general though. Here are 4-5 year graduation rates for some of the schools we have talked about:

Stanford (5 years): 91.9%
Northwestern (4 years): 86%
Vandy: (4 years): 87%
GT (4 years): 31%

For some reason you expect GT football players to graduate at the same rate as the others though.

Same rate as others at the same school also in sports, student-athletes.

Maybe all the Murray haters will chill for a while now. They seem to rant and rave so much about rankings and Murray just dismantled the #1 ranked pass defense in the country.

He finished with 427 yards, 5 TD’s (almost 6), 2 INTS and most important a W against a ranked team.
Georgia will likely finish as a top 5 team. As poor as we played against USC this is not a bad way to finish. Again, to all the haters who seem to point to rankings so much. UGA will likely be a top 5 team (maybe #6).

Let the excuses or lame comments from haters follow.
