Georgia projects well for 2013, even with flaws in win

ORLANDO – The players wore hats reading “CHAMPIONS” in all cap letters. The fact that “Capital One Bowl” — and not SEC or BCS — also was stitched on the caps in a much smaller script might deflate that declaration a bit, but it doesn’t take away from where Georgia may be headed.

Were the Bulldogs great in their final game of the 2012 season? Hardly. The defense, purported to be loaded with NFL talent, too often played sloppy and undisciplined. The quarterback, Aaron Murray, threw two interceptions in the team’s first three possessions. It is what happens sometimes in bowl games. The Dogs didn’t save their best for last. Their best came in the next-to-last game against Alabama.

But ultimately, what came out of Georgia’s 45-31 win over Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl were signs that this program isn’t likely to take a step back next season.

There will be new players. There will be a different team personality. The schedule will be tougher. But the Bulldogs just finished a season that saw them go 12-2 and come within five yards of winning the SEC championship and going to the BCS title game. They rebounded from the crushing loss in the SEC championship game to win a significant bowl game. They showed resiliency by losing two starting wide receivers (Marlon Brown, Michael Bennett) during the season and a third in Tuesday’s game (Malcolm Mitchell). They endured several early season suspensions on defense and played without two defensive starters against Nebraska (John Jenkins, Abry Jones).

Jarvis Jones and several defensive starters now are expected to leave for the NFL. Maybe Murray comes back, but probably not. But Georgia is in a good place now, a player again on the national scene, and nobody could have seen that coming two years ago in Memphis when the team schlepped off the field a loser to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl, dragging a 6-7 record.

“The seniors started a legacy here,” freshman running back Todd Gurley said Tuesday. “They’re passing it down to us, and we’re just going to keep moving forward and winning each year. I know a lot of teams will have the goal of going to the national championship next year, but we really believe that. We’re going to bring in a great recruiting class and we’re going to get it done next year.”

Todd Gurley, here breaking through for a 24-yard touchdown, finished with 125 yards rushing to lead the Bulldogs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Todd Gurley, here breaking through for a 24-yard touchdown, finished with 125 yards rushing to lead the Bulldogs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

As flawed as the Dogs looked against Nebraska, the result and the season projected well for the future.

It starts with the two freshmen in the backfield, Gurley and Keith Marshall. There were questions about the running game going into the season following the excommunication of Isaiah Crowell, but the two quickly eased concerns. In the final game of the season, Gurley rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and Marshall made a difficult back-shoulder, 24-yard touchdown catch to give the Dogs a 38-31 lead early in the fourth quarter.

There’s the future.

It doesn’t matter if the starting quarterback is Murray or Hutson Mason. Georgia’s offense should function well, and the team should be in the middle of things again.

When asked about Marshall’s catch, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said, “We’ve kept things pretty simple for him and Todd because they’re freshmen. But that play there gives us a level of confidence next year that we can expand their package.”

Gurley, Bobo said, brought “a physicality to the offense that we needed. He did a great job leading us as a freshman. I told him after the game, ‘You had a great year, but now you have a chance to be great. So let’s go to work.’”

Marshall said he battled knee tendinitis before the season, affecting his workouts. “I lost some of my explosiveness,” he said. “But it’s finally feeling better. I’m looking forward to getting started on my workouts.”

And then this: “Honestly, I feel we’re the best team in the country. We can play with anybody. We were one play away this year.”

There were hiccups Tuesday. The first half took nearly two hours. The two teams combined for 47 points, five offensive touchdowns, three interceptions (including Nebraska’s pick-six against Murray), a field goal and a blocked punt for a safety. The Dogs trailed 24-23, then 31-23. But Murray, after starting 11 for 24, stopped scaring NFL scouts. He connected with Chris Conley for a 49-yard touchdown, then later scrambled away from pressure to connect with Marshall. Later, he found Conley again on a “jailbreak screen” against Nebraska’s blitz — nice call by Bobo – for an 87-yard score. Checkmate.

It ended well. There’s reason to believe it could end well next season, too.

Congrats to the Dogs. 12-2 is a very good year for a guy like Mark Richt. A top ten finish and another year of doing just enough to quiet his critics. But keep this in mind Dog fans, the defense will be wrecked by players going pro early and the total lack of depth Richt attained over the past few seasons. The 2013 UGA defense will be very young and totally inexperienced starting out. They will have to grow up within the season and Grantham will have his work cut out for him. Murray’s slip of the tongue during the bowl postgame pretty must sums it up that he’s going pro. Good luck to him. So the incumbent QB Mason will finally get a chance to QB UGA for a year. Hate to say it but run & gun QB, LeMay may never get an opportunity to be a starter at Georgia. Bobo/Richt will almost certainly place overachiever Fauria at number 2 on the QB depth chart. The running game appears to be solid but it wouldn’t hurt to add another blue chip RB to build depth. With Richt at the helm, UGA will always priortize wide recievers, but he needs quality O-linemen more. Also he needs to recruit some skill players that have enough versatility to return punts and kick-offs on special teams. It’s a damn shame for a major university like UGA to have a undersized, slow walk-ons handle / fair catch punts. Richt has done a poor job in that area, and even his loyal delusional followers have to admit it.

To sum it up it probably won’t be a 12 win season for the 2013 Dogs. With holes to fill on offense and defense and a more challenging schedule, Georgia probably won’t make it back to Orlando a year from now. That’s a change no one will complain about unless they miss a bowl all together. Go Dogs !!

@phil – really? Ok let’s dig deeper. We play who we line up against. Michigan was a preseason top ten, we played and beat LSU in Death Valley (and we play them every year unlike you wusses ) we CRUSHED the teams on our schedule by average margin of victory. You guys played what, like 8 home games and squeaked by Tennessee and Kentucky? No comparison. Bcs championship game 3 of four years, nuff said. That is all

“Bama” – I am a true Bama fan and actually have class unlike you in your double wide. Why are you talking smack on the UGA story? We don’t even play them next year. @ Jason : I have to disagree with you. LSU is a good team, but they are bi-polar. They are well coached by DC Chavis on defense. The Tigers a plagued with poor offensive playcalling in crucial situations and that’s on HC Les Miles. Their running game as always is strong, but they really need a good OC and QB coach. Les Miles cost the Tigers the game with bad offensive decisions vs. Alabama and he oversaw some terrible offensive playcalling late in the bowl vs Clemson, which cost them the game. Miles is really crazy and his in-game decisions are directly responsible for losses to ‘Bama and Clemson. LSU is a good team with bad coaching on offense.

That was by far the best SEC championship game in a long time.

pppplllllleeeeeaaaaassssseeeee! Can we stop talking like the UGA/Bama game was decided by 5 yards. UGA blocked a kick for a TD, and bama played poorly and UGA still lost!! It wasn’t decided by 5 yards and certainly wasn’t that close. Vaunted UGA defense?? Really?? Bama layed 350 yards on them and Nebraska shreaded them as well. Shultz is a homer talking like UGA is relevent. Had they played anything close to FL’s schedule they would have been back in Memphis and glad to be there. BTW, please keep CMR – what an idiot NOT spiking the ball at the end of the bama game. If he had, he would of had no less that TWO plays for the win. Instead, he was a deer in headlights again, didn’t make the right call, and later tried to defend his screwup by saying they were trying to catch bama off guard. Really? Off guard? UGA will loose to USC, Vandy, LSU, Clemson and GT next year.

Phil .. Murray has been better than Brees was in college. Just because Brees came around after years .. and I do mean YEARS of seasoning in the NFL doesn’t mean he was better than Murray. Do I project Murray to be better than Brees .. heck no, but no more than five years ago people were projecting Brees to be no better than average in the NFL, and that was after a few seasons. Heck, San Diego dumped him because they were certain they had a better young QB in Rivers. That should tell you everything.

Not only that, Murray performance in this game likely elevated him quite considerably. I have seen Geno Smith listed as the possible #1 pick, and if you think he has any better chance in the NFL than Murray you are just not altogether there. He had a couple of decent games this year, but he completely choked for the last eight.

“They were 4 yards away. And if they had 10 seconds left or even a timeout UGA would have won.”
______________________________________________________________________________
Or, if we had spiked it, and then looked to the sidelines for the call because in the end the play we hurriedly tried to call was the 1-play Alabama had covered with their best defender on our best WR – a match-up which we forced the ball toward anyway, when had we simply thrown that ball away too, or had we gone through the progressions even on that play there were other options open.

You can have your Aaron Murray discussions a year from now, spare us that all year long – would you mind ?

We beat # 23 AP Poll Nebraska and they drop-out obviously in favor of Vandie.

Vandie at # 27 AP Poll, moves into the Top 25 and that was a decisive victory for us, like Nebraska.

We beat Florida, another decisive victory over the # 4 team, who was # 2 at the time and would’ve been playing Notre Dame since Alabama also ducked them when they would’ve beat Alabama, like we should’ve as well. It would’ve been the 4th NC for Florida in 16 seasons.

We have 5 Starters in the Pro-Bowl coming up, while only the vols have as many, and have 71 NFL Draft Picks Mark Richt era # 2 in the nation in recruiting. I’m happy. You’re not.

We lost to South Carolina in a blow-out who moves into the Top 10 with their win over Michigan and LSU’s loss to Clemson at # 11 AP Poll today. And dropped to 2-3 in SEC Championship Games but played our hearts out to the final bell and for this, this is a GREAT SEASON for UGA. It is the same 12-2 I guaranteed with the exact wins and losses as I stated pre-season that we’d lose to Alabama and South Carolina and win over Florida and a meaningless team in the bowl game. That’s what I said pre-season. It is what we did. What did you say ? What are you in the bowl challenge ? I am also 91 percentile in the bowl challenge nationally, which is better than Jeff Schultz.

“a time long, long ago when you were relevant, Georgia is a 2nd Tier SEC team.”
________________________________________________________________

# 6 in all the polls 2012, and 4-yards from beating your butts – you were LUCKY, and we’re 2nd Tier SEC Team ? We’re not relevant when we’re # 6 for 2013, as well ? Who’s relevant ? Well, in The SEC, the relevant teams, who are NONE of them 2nd Tier, are : Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Texas A and M, South Carolina, LSU, and Vanderbilt – those are the 7 SEC Teams who make the AP Poll Top 25 for 2012 season – the only AP Poll published for the 2012 season.

Please note Bama, 4 SEC East Teams are AP Poll Top 25 today, and only 3 in your division, which was NOT better than The SEC East 2012 season. In fact, The SEC East is the BEST DIVISION of The SEC 2012 season.

So, too, will it be for the 2013 season. As for your historical BS, without the facts provided, as with all your off-hand comments taken exception to by EVERY Alabama fan, again, on this blog, that we’re

NOT RELEVANT 2012
2ND TIER SEC TEAM 2012

Georgia has played Alabama as well as any team in the United States of America all-time.

66 games, Alabama has won 37 although the vast majority were @ Alabama.

For a 2nd Tier SEC Team 2012, who is NOT RELEVANT, you sure were LUCKY to win by 4-yards on a failure of a junior QB to spike the ball and then look to the sidelines for the play, or go through his progressions to find the open man in the left corner of the end zone instead of forcing it in to our best WR against your only pass defender or throw it away to have the same or better options the last play.

Aaron Murray is NOT Drew Brees because Drew Brees even in college was a MUCH BETTER RUNNER than Aaron Murray, and while Drew Brees beat 5 teams who made the AP Poll Top 25 in 3 years as the Starter, Aaron Murray only has the win over Florida and Vanderbilt this season in his 3 years Starting. Drew Brees in the NFL is far and away better than 1 pass thrown in a pre-season game which is all Aaron Murray will ever have in the NFL and you know that, too.

When you should be in here congratulating an opponent who gave you ALL YOU COULD HANDLE in our 12-2 season Alabama has done better than once in your 120-year history, you call us

2nd Tier SEC team 2012
Not Relevant 2012

If you want to speak the Truth : We sure gave you guys fits for a 2nd Tier SEC Team, not relevant. The game wasn’t that CLOSE 4-yards ? Yeah, it was. 1 second from Victory, and you know it.

Mark Richt is 3-2 vs Alabama.

As for the Polls 2013 up-coming season, Georgia # 6.

South Carolina, Clemson, Vanderbilt and Florida are not ranked higher than UGA 2013 season, either. LSU is fixing to drop worse ranked than UGA both 2012 and 2013 too.

South Carolina is NOT ranked ahead of UGA for 2012 either and only Florida is for 2012 whom we beat handily with them scoring -0- TD on us and us scoring 2 TD on them for 2 wins in a row.

2013, we find no team ranked higher than Georgia we play, us at # 6 although in the pre-season polls so far before LSU blew it against Clemson in HotLanta, LSU WAS ranked # 3, but that will change in pre-season polls now to worse than UGA too.

Florida is NOT ranked ahead of UGA in pre-season polls 2013 because we have an Offense, and they don’t, obviously.

# 6 Georgia 2013 Polls
# 7 Florida 2013 Polls
# 8 LSU is what I predict now LSU 2013 Polls
# 10 South Carolina 2013 Polls
# 13 Clemson 2013 Polls
# 25 Vanderbilt 2013 Polls

We lose how many of those games, if Aaron Murray returns to set all NCAA records except wins ?

We ARE RELEVANT and NOT 2nd Tier with our little QB and our Top Running Backs. We just need to run the ball more 2013.

Jeff, what if Murray leaves for the NFL? How much real-time experience does our next QB have? NONE, because CMR doesn’t allow it. He keeps AM in all the games to pad his stats (and maybe to honor a promise to Murray). So do you think we will have a good QB right out of he gate if Murray leaves?

Thomas Brown

January 2nd, 2013
6:52 am

We better have a QB with real-time experience when Aaron Murray leaves.

That won’t be now, because as you say, Mark Richt has only given DJ Shockley real-time experience in his 12 seasons’ to-date, and had better CORRECT this in 2013 for Aaron Murray to set all the NCAA Records except Wins which he can only TIE David Greene’s UGA Record of 42.

UGA came out flat for most of the first half, and I attribute that to the close SECCG they lost, but they were able to go in at halftime and come out fired up for the second half and Nebraska didn’t have an answer.
One thing worth noting, is the fact that three SEC East teams have now won their bowl game and two SEC West teams have lost theirs. I think, if Florida wins tonight, you can say that the SEC East is back. I think Alabama will not let down the SEC like LSU and Mississippi did. Hopefully, LSU can get a OC and a QB, as they looked bad on offense. The QB they have is not the answer. Mississippi was just over rated I think.
UGA finished strong, and if they can come up with a good defense, with all of the new kids next year, should be in the same position as they were this year. I think Murray will probably stay, although, I wouldn’t blame him for leaving, with all of the negative crap that fans say about him. As the announcer all noted yesterday on the broadcast, UGA fans are very demanding, and I think they meant that in a negative way. If most of this blog is any indication, they are spot on. As for the Tech. and Alabama bloggers that come on here with their idiot comments: I would say you need to find a blog about your own team, and leave the blogs concerning UGA to the fans of UGA. They complain enough about a win as it is. They don’t need your comments to add to most of theirs.
I look forward to next season, and enjoying the DAWGS play football. I am sure there may be some disappointment and a lot of high times, but football is a game, and these kids play their hearts out for UGA and the state of Georgia. Surely, some folks think of football as a life or death situation, but in the end, we should be proud that UGA is a fine institution, and represents the state of Georgia well.

JoeFan

January 2nd, 2013

Being overly optimistic there regarding 2013. UGA should be good and even exceptional if Murry returns on offense not so much with a redshirt freshman in charge. Then you have the defense which will have its questions and holes to fill. Plus UGA will have to contend with a stronger division. So while 2013 appears to have the foundation for a good year, lets not raise the National Championship banner yet.

Georgia had the easiest schedule in the SEC this year. Even in the bowl game they played a team that was flatten and embarrassed in their championship game. This is bum of the week scheduling and why the AJC locks into it with these high expectations is beyond me.

Did anybody notice that goofy Georgia announcer getting in the way of the coin toss at the beginning of the game? It looked like the refs chased him away after he tripped on people trying to get the game started. These are the hanger oners that feed this program’s high expectations that never seem to pan out. Five yards might have been what stopped them from even being in the SEC Championship game if they had played the original schedule with Alabama on it. As Clemson proved you have one great team in the SEC this year Alabama, and I am not real sure they beat Notre Dame after watching the SEC teams struggle in these bowl game.

GT does that stand for “Great Turd”? It sure isn’t Georgia Tech because no tech nerd has any room to talk about UGA’s schedule. You lost to MTSU for god’s sake. I hope you guys are ready for your annual steamrolling because next year will be worse than what you got this year.

You know Danny Tech is on probation, we’ve got this football factory and part time jail house going on at the flats. Break up the Jackets demonstrations all over the state, the NCAA has opened a field office right on campus. I’m not sure the school can survive without football, we need that money, so expect a few more Cadillacs and full length mink coats on campus next year.

AD McGarrity keep giving CMR what he needs and more.

Especially in terms of OOC scheduling. Wish he wouldn’t be quite so generous there.

Dont get too excited, Nebraska gave up 70 to “mighty” Michigan State….a fine, fine 8-4 Big 10 team.

Nebraska beat Mich St 28-24 in East Lansing. Are you just stupid–or what?

How many times are you and Bradley gonna live the “within 5 yards” of woulda, coulda, shoulda in the SEC game? How pathetic.

GA barely beat a mid ranked team yesterday. Neb was deplorable on 3rd downs. 13 yards to go and GA scores from the 13 and GA scores.

Georgia had an easy schedule 2012 ?

# 25 Vanderbilt
# 23 Nebraska
# 10 South Carolina
# 4 Florida
# 1 Alabama

That looks pretty tough to me.

Mississippi is not Mississippi State, and Mississippi State is UnRanked any poll. How are they OVER-RATED as you state ?

Tier-2 Bowl Game yes for us, and your Bowl Game was NONE Ohio State, while you continue to harp on how you view our 2012 season winning 12 games including over # 4 Florida, # 25 Vanderbilt and # 23 Nebraska. Who the heck did you beat ? No one.

Georgia Tech played in a Tier-4 Bowl game and has not won a Major Bowl Game – Tier 1 – starting 1957 and put up a 10-42 score on us in your UnRanked 7-7 team 2012 to have you guys in here telling us how great you’ll be in 2013 when you’re 1-11 vs Mark Richt including the 10-42.

The Strength of Schedules will reflect that Vanderbilt just won an impressive AP Poll Top 25 Win for them, and that Florida will too, and Alabama will and South Carolina did. Those are not out and will not be out until after Alabama beats Notre Dame, when Notre Dame would’ve lost to us and Florida too, and maybe South Carolina. Vanderbilt is 9-4 who beat NC State yesterday who beat Florida State

FSU.

Neither FSU nor Northern Illinois college deserved a MAJOR BOWL BID

Neither.

The BCS has ruined the Major Bowls.

Hopefully, after this 2013 season up-coming the new Play-Off situation of 4 teams instead of 2 the + 1 I have been telling you for 10 years on these blogs is what I support and what I want, will fix the BCS MAJOR BOWL ruining situation. That has yet to be determined, but the Peach Bowl appears to be in the discussion as a probable.

Might as well with the

COLLEGE FOOTBALL TOWN

Atlanta, is, notwithstanding the fact that that Georgia Tech is not a college football program and hasn’t been starting 1957.

BCS Ruined the Major Bowls Georgia Tech has not won starting 1957 and 10-42, ha.

Now, we don’t have a NC after 1980 but we damn sure are # 6 for 2012 and # 6 for 2013, have 5 Pro-Bowl STARTERS, have 71 NFL Draft Picks Mark Richt era and have beat 20 AP Poll Top 25 teams who made the AP Poll Top 25 the season we beat them. We absolutely gave you Alabama fans all you could handle, didn’t we ? We beat # 4 Florida as our best win and your best win is over us # 6.
