Georgia projects well for 2013, even with flaws in win

ORLANDO – The players wore hats reading “CHAMPIONS” in all cap letters. The fact that “Capital One Bowl” — and not SEC or BCS — also was stitched on the caps in a much smaller script might deflate that declaration a bit, but it doesn’t take away from where Georgia may be headed.

Were the Bulldogs great in their final game of the 2012 season? Hardly. The defense, purported to be loaded with NFL talent, too often played sloppy and undisciplined. The quarterback, Aaron Murray, threw two interceptions in the team’s first three possessions. It is what happens sometimes in bowl games. The Dogs didn’t save their best for last. Their best came in the next-to-last game against Alabama.

But ultimately, what came out of Georgia’s 45-31 win over Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl were signs that this program isn’t likely to take a step back next season.

There will be new players. There will be a different team personality. The schedule will be tougher. But the Bulldogs just finished a season that saw them go 12-2 and come within five yards of winning the SEC championship and going to the BCS title game. They rebounded from the crushing loss in the SEC championship game to win a significant bowl game. They showed resiliency by losing two starting wide receivers (Marlon Brown, Michael Bennett) during the season and a third in Tuesday’s game (Malcolm Mitchell). They endured several early season suspensions on defense and played without two defensive starters against Nebraska (John Jenkins, Abry Jones).

Jarvis Jones and several defensive starters now are expected to leave for the NFL. Maybe Murray comes back, but probably not. But Georgia is in a good place now, a player again on the national scene, and nobody could have seen that coming two years ago in Memphis when the team schlepped off the field a loser to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl, dragging a 6-7 record.

“The seniors started a legacy here,” freshman running back Todd Gurley said Tuesday. “They’re passing it down to us, and we’re just going to keep moving forward and winning each year. I know a lot of teams will have the goal of going to the national championship next year, but we really believe that. We’re going to bring in a great recruiting class and we’re going to get it done next year.”

Todd Gurley, here breaking through for a 24-yard touchdown, finished with 125 yards rushing to lead the Bulldogs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Todd Gurley, here breaking through for a 24-yard touchdown, finished with 125 yards rushing to lead the Bulldogs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

As flawed as the Dogs looked against Nebraska, the result and the season projected well for the future.

It starts with the two freshmen in the backfield, Gurley and Keith Marshall. There were questions about the running game going into the season following the excommunication of Isaiah Crowell, but the two quickly eased concerns. In the final game of the season, Gurley rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and Marshall made a difficult back-shoulder, 24-yard touchdown catch to give the Dogs a 38-31 lead early in the fourth quarter.

There’s the future.

It doesn’t matter if the starting quarterback is Murray or Hutson Mason. Georgia’s offense should function well, and the team should be in the middle of things again.

When asked about Marshall’s catch, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said, “We’ve kept things pretty simple for him and Todd because they’re freshmen. But that play there gives us a level of confidence next year that we can expand their package.”

Gurley, Bobo said, brought “a physicality to the offense that we needed. He did a great job leading us as a freshman. I told him after the game, ‘You had a great year, but now you have a chance to be great. So let’s go to work.’”

Marshall said he battled knee tendinitis before the season, affecting his workouts. “I lost some of my explosiveness,” he said. “But it’s finally feeling better. I’m looking forward to getting started on my workouts.”

And then this: “Honestly, I feel we’re the best team in the country. We can play with anybody. We were one play away this year.”

There were hiccups Tuesday. The first half took nearly two hours. The two teams combined for 47 points, five offensive touchdowns, three interceptions (including Nebraska’s pick-six against Murray), a field goal and a blocked punt for a safety. The Dogs trailed 24-23, then 31-23. But Murray, after starting 11 for 24, stopped scaring NFL scouts. He connected with Chris Conley for a 49-yard touchdown, then later scrambled away from pressure to connect with Marshall. Later, he found Conley again on a “jailbreak screen” against Nebraska’s blitz — nice call by Bobo – for an 87-yard score. Checkmate.

It ended well. There’s reason to believe it could end well next season, too.

5150,

As I said earlier, Michigan gave Spurrier all he wanted and Clowney gave us all a hit for the ages.

Nebraska had more than a few dogs nervous into the second have where the dogs basically won 14-0. Not a blowout my any means.

I’m just pissed they were both on at the same time. I felt like the NFL Red Zone going to a double box.

Agree w/ dognole. Switch. Red Zone is great. See all the games, hear all the announcers, and no commercials. I told my wife its perhaps the greatest thing ever invented.

I watch the Falcons in their entirety then go to Red Zone for the rest unless there’s a compelling match-up on.

It can be irritating at times with all the clicking back and forth or you get into a certain game then poof, the change.

Overall, it’s a must have, especially if your a Fantasy player ( which I am not)

This Defense is suited for a 4-3, if Grantham can do this, I can guarantee Georgia moves into a top five defense, but running a 3-4 while trying to stop the spread will leave gapping holes, and expose them badly. The 3-4 is based on solid blitzes and timing, and both ALABAMA and NEBRASKA burned the Dawgs, the Tide more with power, the Husker’s with finesse. We got burned in the run, and showed flashes of weakness against every team against the run. This must improve.

Nick Saban has Bama staying at the Fontainebleau for the NC game. As JR said..”if you have to ask the price then you can’t afford it anyway”.There is a lot of SEC hate out there folks. The loss by both LSU and the Gators is so great for fans outside the SEC. If Bama goes down if flames I am not sure Al Gore’s interweb will be able to handle all the comments from the SEC haters.

Nike will be send the Tide in their latest materials for the NC game. Nobody will even know the difference since Bama will not allows any major change.

He lacks a QB personality and lacks the quiet swagger that great QBs have. He needs another year.Probably wont put up the same #s next year because they need to control the clock more with the run in 2013 but should still re-write a ton of records. I pulled for Florida against 1-team this season, Louisville, and I have no idea why I did. I was not impressed with Florida at all 2012, although I gave them way too much credit for beating all those top teams they beat to have a year no one expected of them at 11-2 to our 12-2. In no way were they ever better than Georgia 2012 season, although the only couple of days they were ranked ahead of us was after we played Alabama while they sat at home. My Florida neighbor felt pretty good about his season, but ending as it did against us, is salt in the wound to him. I thought coming into the season that they had no offense. They certainly proved that all season. I never expected their Florida defense to be # 5 in the nation Scoring Defense to our # 19 in the nation Scoring Defense and Florida State with their soft schedule of # 6 in the nation Scoring Defense FSU. These are approximations because the NCAA has not re-calculated their rankings after 12/29 yet. So, did I root for my Bitter Rival ? Not against South Carolina, no way. Did I root for them in their bowl game, always : This is The SEC. I was extremely happy to have them be a complete no-show and poorly coached against a team who lost to a 7-Loss team just 2 games prior and lose in such a convincing double-digit fashion, never in the football game. You cannot have a Bitter Rival and root for them, hope for them, want them to do well, speak of them as if they’re great, or even really truly acknowledge their greatness, other than to point out that they would have won their 4th NC in 16 seasons, had we not beat them, remaining convinced as I reluctantly near the end of the season admitted, that Florida did beat the # 7 # 8 # 9 and # 10 teams in the Final AP Poll Top 25, while we BEAT THEM.

Florida’s Total Offense 2012 season was NOT in the Top 100, and this because their quarterback(s) were in no fashion capable of the forward pass against anyone finishing the season

NOT TOP 100 PASSING OFFENSE
NOT TOP 100 BEING SACKED

AP Poll for 2012 Season :

# 1 Alabama 13-1
# 4 Georgia 12-2
# 8 Texas A and M 11-2
# 9 South Carolina 11-2
# 10 Florida 11-2
# 11 LSU 10-3
# 25 Vanderbilt 9-4

7 SEC teams AP Poll Top 25, 4 in The SEC East, only 3 SEC West.

7 Consecutive SEC Championships with UGA 2012, right there for a change because of our win over Florida, my hated Bitter refuse to give them credit Rival.

Will Muschamp has been bragging how he would beat Georgia, and has FAILED every time. I see no resolution to that 2013, if little Aaron Murray returns and why wouldn’t he.

Alec Ogletree ended the season as our leading tackler with 111, despite missing the 1st four games.

Todd Gurley had 1,745 yards 2012.
Malcolm Mitchell 1,006 yards 2012 with his 13-yard kick-off return vs Nebraska.

Nebraska QB states he did and Nebraska did whatever the hell they wanted to against Georgia’s Defense, and that The SEC Defenses are not as tough as the Big Ten Defenses. Taylor Martinez was sacked 5 times, threw 2 interceptions, ran the football 20 times for a grand total of 46 yards, while our QB had 4 rushes for 3 yards, was sacked only twice, threw 2 interceptions, and threw 5 TD Passes to Taylor Martinez throwing only 2 TD Passes.

I pretty much would say the difference in the game was that our QB was pretty much head-and-shoulders better than their Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez – the poor loser trying to make excuses for his performance compared to our QB’s performance, who pretty much did whatever the hell he wanted to against the typical Big 10 defense with the

We on the other hand, handily beat Nebraska by 2 TD here in our bowl game just completed when our QB out-played their Nebraska QB so completely and thoroughly that the Nebraska’s QB’s comments are completely and utterly B.S.

To the Hammer: Yes, Florida should definitely be ranked in the final polls despite the loss to Louisville, given the schedule they faced this year. The collective W-L of Florida’s opponents from the year was probalby the best in the country. In my opinion, having the success they did against that schedule shoould be rewarded in the polls.

BTW – in case you haven’t figured it out yet, Thomas Brown apparently does not feel that you are qualified to talk about big time college football if you don’t root for the correct team. He’s asked abbout my credentials, as well, although I can’t for the life of me figure out the correlatoon between what school you attended (or root for), and you knowledge of the sport

All Wet Willie, sir :

Why when the other Alabama posters to this blog REMIND YOU that Nick Saban states that UGA deserved to be playing in the Sugar Bowl and NOT Florida, do you persist with your nastiness to us here on this blog that somehow UGA is no match for Alabama when 3 times now, I’ve asked you :

We did give you all you could handle,

Right ?

@ Thomas Brown:

Give’m hell my man but I don’t understand why you keep referring to some of the Single Digit IQ posters as “sir” unless, of course, you subscribe to the socially accepted theory that “A$$HOLES Should have handles”.

You are doing a fantastic job of putting most of them in their place and had UGA won the SEC Championship(WE were very, very close) you would not have heard a peep out of the Bama Trolls (kinda like after the Bama/Texas A&M game, only it would have lasted until summer rather than the few weeks they were silent after A&M) On the other hand Bama’s classy fans(There are many) continued to post because they realize how juvenile the trolls sound EXCEPT following the rare Bama loss.

I certainly hope Bama beats ND but if (God forbid) ND wins you will notice the scarcity of Bama Trolls and other trolls(aka GT, USCe,Auburn, etc posing as Bama fans/trolls)

Go back and check for posts by the Bama trolls and imitation Bama trolls for the period following the Texas A&M game and tell me how many posts were made by Wet Willie, Whiskey Breath and their ilk.

You are doing a great job but don’t exert yourself trying to educate those type creatures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROLL DAwgs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“My own alma mater plays in D3, so I don’t get to follow them much on the local sports pages. They, unfortunately, lost their second round playoff game, to finish 9-3 after winning their, admittedly fairly weak, conference for the third straight year and fifth out of the last six.”

Now, you offer-up this morning :

“He’s asked abbout my credentials, as well, although I can’t for the life of me figure out the correlatoon between what school you attended (or root for)”

Which is it Upon Further Review, sir ?
1. You haven’t posted on this blog that you attended and root for a team other than Georgia?
2. You have posted on this blog that you attended and root for a team other than Georgia?

Obviously, if you are a fan pulling against Georgia, most folks are very up-front about the fact that their loyalties are against Georgia, and therefore skewed against Georgia. You wish that you had hidden the fact that you did brag to us all here on this blog that your own alma mater plays in D III and they lost their second round playoff game, to finish 9-3 after winning their, admittedly fairly weak, conference for the third straight year and fifth out of the last six.

Georgia went 12-2 beating # 25 AP Poll 2012 Vanderbilt, # 10 Florida AP Poll 2012, # 21 soon to drop some Nebraska Coaches’ Poll 2012 and losing to 2 quality teams # 1 Alabama 2012 AP Poll at 13-1 and # 9 AP Poll 2012 South Carolina at 11-2 to our 12-2.

Yes, sir, Upon Further Review, the handles of these posters like yourself who put up BS about Georgia and don’t wish to disclose who their team is, lose credibility on the Internet because obviously their

STINKING 9-3 alma mater D III team does not BEGIN to measure up to UGA 2012

sir.

So, sit there whining about UGA this and UGA that and PRETEND you haven’t come in here bragging about your alma mater and Div III 9-3 record and winning your conference championship 3 years running.

You DAMN sure did.

Wow, compared to UGA – that means SO MUCH.

Well, I am not going to educate them – just have them do what Upon Further Review was m a n enough to do, and give us his school, his alma mater and whom it is he roots for with a handle Upon Further Review which sounds as if it could’ve even been a Bulldogs’ Football Fan. I am certain he wishes he hadn’t.

I have yet to see a single Notre Dame post. Not 1, although they have been taken to the cle an ers in here.

# 4 AP Poll Georgia 12-2 for 2012 season
# 3 AP Poll Georgia 2002 season
# 2 AP Poll Georgia 2007 season
