Mark Richt hopes his team can finish the season better than it has the last two years. (AP photo)
ORLANDO – The old comedian Steve Allen once said, “I used to be a heavy gambler. But now I just make mental bets. That’s how I lost my mind.”
He easily could have been talking about bowl games. As inexact sciences go, they fit somewhere between the “wheel of fortune” and “pick a number between one and 10.”
A college team’s best players often are upperclassmen who already have one foot and an entire head out the door. Some get lost in the vacation atmosphere of bowl week. Some can’t transition back from holiday break. Others just look, play and act like they would rather not be there. It’s why we are left with results like: Central Florida 10, Georgia Holograms 6 in the Liberty Bowl.
For Georgia’s sake, this next bowl needs to be different.
This isn’t some grand declaration that the Bulldogs’ program will be defined by whether or not they defeat Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl. The turnaround coach Mark Richt has made in the last two seasons should be evidence enough that things are going in the right direction. But should Georgia lose to Nebraska after falling only five yards short of an SEC championship and a BCS title berth, it would take some luster off the season.
Think about last year. Losing to No. 1 ranked LSU in the SEC title game was expected, even after a 10-game winning streak. But losing to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl (blowing a 16-0 halftime and falling 33-30 in overtime) wasn’t so palatable.
Losing to Alabama 32-28 in the SEC title game four weeks ago was crushing for those in and around the program. But in many respects, the Bulldogs might have gained more respect in the defeat than in any victory this season. Losing on Tuesday to Nebraska – which was blown out by Wisconsin 70-31 in the Big Ten championship game and fell to 16th in the BCS rankings — would be a downer Richt would rather avoid.
Think of ending a really nice meal with Aunt Edna’s jello mold.
For a program that preaches, “Finish the drill,” the failure of just finishing the season would become an increasing concern.
Richt was 7-2 in bowl games before the last two losses. When the team started bowl practices, he told players to have fun when the schedule allowed for it. But practice meant practice and meeting meant meeting. For the most part, he liked what he saw.
“I think we did a good job of that,” he said. “Was it good enough? We’ll find out.”
And then later: “I just can’t imagine them not playing with great effort.”
I’ve seldom seen a talented team look worse than the Dogs did at the Liberty Bowl. But after a 6-6 season, it wasn’t entirely unexpected.
Sleepwalking in Orlando after going 11-2 and elevating the team’s fan base would be alarming. It also could leave a hangover returning players would have to deal with.
“We’ve got another opportunity to finish on a high note,” Richt said. “On a personal level, there’s always a scene in the locker room after the game where I’m going to be talking to the team for the very last time. I’ll address the seniors for the last time. You want that last memory to be a good one. That’s a motivating factor for me and I think it probably is for those seniors or anybody else who think this might be their last ball game.”
Quarterback Aaron Murray, who could be playing in his final game if he declares himself eligible for the NFL draft, maintains he and teammates are motivated. He pointed to his own inability to win a bowl game (0-2) and the possibility of the Dogs finishing among the top five ranked teams. “We have a chance to finish out on top, which is something we haven’t done in a couple of seasons,” he said.
The season deserves more than a season-ending face plant.

Look at the TECH vs. USC to see what an inspired team ( GT ) and a uninspired team ( USC ) can do.
USC was not there today. They have superior athletes at almost every position but came out feeling like they should have received a better opponent record wise…………………………..And they got beat.

No, they won’t be close again for awhile. Alabama, Florida, LSU and Texas A and M are loaded next year. Plus, there is your annual beating by South Carolina. And you lose all of that NFL-talented defense ranked 77th in the country against the rush. That’s as good as u will ever be.

Win this game and we have a good season. Lose the game and the season doesn’t look all that special. That should be motivation enough for anyone on the Georgia team. I’m not worried about the team.
I am a bit worried about our coaching staff. Didn’t Mark Richt say something about bowl games being exhibition games?
I think we definitely way outclass Nebraska in a position head to head, but motivation is telling. Just look at what just happened in the Tech game. USC phoned it in, or maybe they were just still waiting for Tech to return to the banquet. Anyway, one team had their game head on, and they won.
I think it important to win the game against Nebraska. I want the SEC to win every game they play. I’m tired of people dissing our conference, as if only the elite teams of our conference are any good. Our teams have a chance to demonstrate the superiority of the entire upper half of the SEC.
I look for LSU to come through against the other team from South Carolina tonight.

You know UGA has gotten everyones attention when even the morons (like BAMA) come on here and want to try to rain on the parade. If you don’t support the Dawgs, fine. But why are you posting your negative comments on here?? As for the schedule, you can only play the schedule the SEC hands you. And no team is invincible. And no team stays the same for many years, like the NFL. Every team has turnover and star athletes that come and go. It all comes down to recruiting and landing the players that will come together and make a team great.

I have nothing but praise for Bama in their win over UGA except for the dirty hit made on Murray and the poke in the eye by the UGA player on the Bama player. Bama beat UGA fairly and squarely on the offensive line vs. UGA’s defensive line. It’s just plain and simple, that was the difference in the game. UGA just couldn’t stop their run game! Nuff sed, now get to straightening it out and the DAWGS will be just fine next year. They almost pulled it off anyway which in my opinion shows a helluva lot of heart!!

There is nothing that can be done for this season, either way, playing a Nebraska team ranked # 23 who does not deserve to be even ranked that highly. Beat them, and they drop out of the Top 25, replaced by Vandie with their win today. Lose to them, and the season is shot. We played 3 teams this season, and lost 2. We won a game this season, for a change, but our Quarterback was not good in that win to be now 2-10 vs teams who made the AP Poll Top 25 in his entire career, with that lone win a game he wasn’t good in. He should have a top season his redshirt senior season, if you like stats run up on nobody teams – which I don’t. The Vandie win is a his 1 good game against the 12 teams who made the AP Poll Top 25 in his entire career. The Florida game was typical for him in these 12 games of his career.
OUT-RUSHED for the 2012 season, is what will be written about the season post-game today. We never got Keith Marshall out in space to take advantage of him. We went another season having not prepared our back-up QB again, leaving only DJ Shockley whom we’ve prepared in the 12 seasons to-date.

Oh LORD…. We all know what happened at stunning Chick-Fil-A Bowl tonight! I went to the Georgia Dome to support LSU against Clemson, what a stunning comeback Clemson did…. One thing I noticed about Clemson fans is that they are LOUD! I was way across the stadium & when Clemson is on defense, their fans yell like crazy. Warning to all bulldog fans, we are @ Clemson next year in Death Valley, imagine how louder it’s going to be when we are trying to hear the play calling on offense! Mettenburger had no first downs the entire 4th quarter for only 11 yards! I have to give Clemson credit though they never gave up & played their hearts out & fought until the end. They deserved the win!

53 scholarship recruits plus 1 transfer-in is all we have available for Nebraska today, a Top 10 All-Time College Football Program in Wins, like ourselves with our record against them 0-1 all-time.
I did not understand all the comments about the 2 who did not qualify last year and said they were coming in early, and then failed academically to meet the early requirements. Are they out now for the Fall too ? I didn’t read that.
And, what is this stuff Game Changer is stating about our Academic Casualty for the game today ? If you’ve got something to share on this, provide it. If not, why insinuate you do know and then not disclose it ?
Well, it’s a new year.
Happy New Year. Good party tonight, with lots of good friends, fireworks and fun.
LSU lost to Clemson ? What’s that all about ? Couldn’t be in 2 places at once.
Good heavens, I see Georgia Tech stopped the streak of losing bowl games at 7 in a row. Lame Kitten is not long for that program, losing to a 6-7 football team, to have lost now 5 of their last 6 games at 7-6 on the season they were ranked # 1 pre-season. Does Stanford get credit for beating # 1 in the nation to start the season when they beat Southern California ?
Mississippi State is playing New Year’s Day ?
Michigan is playing New Year’s Day ?
Obviously too many bowl games New Year’s Day.
The Falcons should have never played their starters in that game yesterday. I told you so. You could look at a loss like that then, having not played your starters, that it is because you didn’t play your starters. As it is, it’s just a downer. You were way wrong to say we should try to win, and playing our starters at the end of the 4th quarter was more of the idiotic BS we’ve always pulled here in Atlanta, now with more injuries to our team we could ill-afford.
I change my mind. We’re going to FLOP again. I looked at the faces of the dis-allussioned Falcons leaving the field, and this is a big downer.

ESPN said PAC-12 would go 8-0 in bowl games this season, just before the bowl games started.
http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/50660/can-the-pac-12-go-8-0-this-bowl-season
Instead, the PAC-12 has won only 2 bowl games, losing 4 already.
2nd best conference ?
I don’t think so for those out there in the Land of Fruit and Nuts where nobody cares about college football, anyway.
The Big XII is the 2nd best conference ?
Uh, no – they’re 3-3 in bowl games now.
Even with the Face Plant LSU performed on itself last night here, Vandie won.
Vandie won a bowl game in 1955.
Vandie won a bowl game in 2008.
208-162-9 SEC in bowl games all-time.
117-109-5 PAC-12 in bowl games all-time, that only with wins over Big 10
109-127-1 Big 10 in bowl games all-time Ohio State 0 for 12 bowl games SEC
95-101-2 ACC in bowl games all-time
As an SEC team, Arkansas is the only team with a losing record in SEC bowl games 4-8
Vanderbilt has a winning bowl record in The SEC
As an SEC team, LSU fell to 22-21-1 in SEC bowl games, obviously, 2nd worst for SEC
SEC finishes this 2012 season with 7 teams ranked in AP Poll Top 25.
7.
4 from The SEC East, and Georgia beat # 4 Florida and # 25 Vandie
3 from The SEC West, and Georgia beat none of those.
SEC has 7 bowl games remaining now and it’s January 1 Happy New Year
Big XII has 3 bowl games left
PAC-12 has only 2 bowl games left at 2-4, after going 2-5 last year to our 5-2
Big 10 has only 5 bowl games left because Ohio State is on Probation
Big 10 moved up their teams 1 spot because of Ohio State’s Probation, AGAIN.
Wisconsin plays in the Rose Bowl Saturday, unranked 5-Loss Wisconsin who beat Nebraska in Nebraska’s last game 31-70
That’s who we get to play today and they cling barely to and undeserved # 23 before the game.
Been 12 years now of the Mark Richt era, and this has happened to us all 12 years now – not beat a top team to end the season any of the 12 years and counting
NATIONAL STAGE everyone watching and 12 years in a row Mark Richt not beat top team in bowl game, yet.

How can you lose to team who has no business being ranked Top 25 when you’re # 6
Nebraska # 23 lost last game to an unranked 5-Loss Wisconsin after beating Nebraska 70-31.
Nebraska # 81 Passing Offense
Nebraska # 97 Rushing Defense, even worse than us at # 76
Nebraska # 56 Scoring Defense
Nebraska # 64 Net Punting
Nebraska # 61 Kick-Off Returns
Nebraska # 105 Turnover Margin
Nebraska # 85 Sacks Allowed
This is a STOMP, only way Nebraska gets to play New Year’s Day is Ohio State is on PROBATION, again.
Wisconsin is NOT the only 5-Loss team Nebraska LOST to, also UCLA 5-Loss beat Nebraska.

64-19

What does winning this game prove? It proves that a coaching staff is in control and can motivate players. Mailing it in like USC did proves Kiffin is a poor leader, struggles with being honest about who is in charge in the program there and his own personal motivation for being involved with coaching.
Ga has shown signs even this year of lack of motivation ((KY). This worries me.. Tech finishes on a high note, Vandy the same. CLEMSON our next opponent is now primed and ready to play us. This game has meaning. It helps or hurts recruiting. It determines who stays and who goes next year. It is a game someone has to win or lose. If you are a player, then you should be playing to win it! Go Dogs!

OK guys, First of all thanks to GT for keeping me in the big $$$. I predicted GT would win 2 weeks ago because USC did NOT want to be in El Paso. They were incredibly unmotivated, have a mediocre offense (without Barkley)……and absolutely one of the worse rushing defenses in the Country!!!! I could not believe how terrible they were against Oregon giving-up almost 11 yards/rush in the second half…..so it was a no brainer that GT would dominate the ground game!!! This was the perfect game for GT to win. I predicted on these blogs that GT would win easily by 14 or more. Thanks GT for making This Dawg $500 in Vegas!! Now, I need Miss. State to win today today so I’ll hit all 5 of my 5 team bet (GT and Vandy were part of that bet and they both didn’t let me down). P.S. I love to have the Jackets make money for me!!!,

Rodney Garner is mostly responsible Dawg Patrol.
We went from # 67 in the nation in rush defense before SEC Champ Game to # 76
Not much.
We’ve been deplorable against the run, and all Nebraska does is run, which is why they matched us up against them.
Also, Nebraska has a great pass defense, it will drop a bunch today.
# 1 Pass Defense Nebraska
Why do you think they matched us up with Nebraska ?
We have a horrible Rush Defense and all Nebraska does is run.
All we do is Pass and they’re the # 1 Pass Defense in the nation.
This game smells.
What you’re supposed to do is run the ball against Nebraska.
Mike Bobo and Aaron Murray will be having NONE of that.
They never do.
That is the other part of why for the season we will’ve GIVEN UP more rushing yards than we gained despite this

Another comment about LSU that is sad. LSU may have had the most talented team in the country, but the MAD HATER has struck again. No wonder LSU fans hate SABAN.
MILES is not as good as SABAN.
The epic meltdown served as a disspiriting end to one of the most disappointing seasons of the Miles era. By most accounts, this was one of the most talented teams in LSU history. It seemed to have it all: depth; experience; ability. Indeed, one day, we’ll scan NFL rosters on Sundays and wonder how such a talented team could have possibly lost three games.

You hit the nail on the head Thomas B. Richt and BoBo will try to air it out and that could disasterous. Also — I don’t understand why The Dawgs keep running Gurley ’till his tongue is hanging out when we’ve got Marshall and Malcombe sitting on the bench. We never see Malcombe and I don’t understand that. Vince Dooley would have all three of these guys running in and out of the game on every possession. GO DAWGS

Just ask Moreno and Jenkins and Lynch and many others who have played for UGA because they wanted to play in the SEC
Again Im glad you are so happy that Clemp-sons has more motivation and belief now going into next season facing an SEC opponent that they beat a top 10 SEC team in the bowl game and arent going to be pushed around by a UGA team that has lost 9 starters on defense
