Greg McGarity is pleased but not content with Georgia's turnaround under Mark Richt. (Curtis Compton)
Greg McGarity is avoiding amusement parks and costumed cartoon characters this week. He found his own “Happiest Place on Earth” in Orlando – roaming the aisles of a Barnes and Noble while clutching a gift card.
“I’m going to spend all of this,” he said by phone.
McGarity loves books, particularly anything on leadership. His favorite is, “Great by Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos, and Luck — Why Some Thrive Despite Them All,” by Jim Collins.
“There’s a section in there on productive paranoia,” Georgia’s athletic director said. “I think all ADs have a level of that.”
It is why, despite the generally positive feelings that surround the Georgia football program these days, McGarity isn’t nearly satisfied. In fact, when asked if he felt comfortable about the program’s turnaround and direction, he all but chewed up the word and spit it out.
“I don’t think you ever get comfortable,” he said. “There’s always something that needs improvement. You always have to find ways to get better. Comfortable? No. I don’t think that’s the word I would use at all. I don’t think anybody should feel real comfortable with any part of our football program, or any program.”
Step on the gas.
McGarity walked into a mess in August 2010. He replaced Damon Evans, who was fired following a DUI arrest. He started work a week before the first game of what turned into a 6-7 football season. He watched as the Bulldogs started the following year 0-2, as speculation grew about Mark Richt’s future. So much for easing in.
As Georgia prepares for the Capital One Bowl against Nebraska, the view has changed significantly. The Bulldogs fell five yards short of going to the BCS title game, losing the SEC championship to Alabama 32-28. Since going 6-9 to begin McGarity’s tenure, Georgia is 21-4. The four losses: two in SEC Championship games (LSU, Alabama), one in a bowl (Michigan State), one in the regular season (South Carolina).
What does Richt get for this? A pat on the back, mostly. He didn’t receive a raise in June. His new five-year contract kept the salary about the same ($2.8 million) but doubled incentive bonuses ($200,000 for an SEC title; $800,000 for the BCS). Richt also was allowed to walk away at any time. No buyout. In other words: You want to go? Go.
“There were some things important to Mark and some things important to me,” McGarity said. “Performance incentives are important. They sort of make all of us work a little harder. I’m not saying that’s the end all, but if you have the opportunity to maximize your potential, any competitive person will justify that.”
Step on the gas.
There’s little sense of satisfaction with McGarity. Don’t misunderstand. He’s pleased with the program’s turnaround. “Gratified,” was the word he used.
He is holding off giving a final grade on this season because, “We still have a final exam against Nebraska. I would just say thus far I’m extremely proud of the way our team and coaches have approached the season. I see tremendous potential for the program continuing to develop, if we have that same commitment and that same drive.”
He understands there’s still an unhappy segment of the fan base. But he refers to them as, “the society of the miserable. They’re going to vent when things are going really well and when they’re not.”
McGarity could have listened to “the noise,” as he calls it, but he didn’t fire Richt after that 6-7 season. He took notes. He asked Richt what he needed and provided support. The nutrition and strength-and-conditioning programs were revamped. When there was a subject that bothered McGarity in the middle of the night, he would wake up the next morning, go to work and ask Richt about it.
College and professional sports aren’t any different in this regard: It’s still about leadership, laying out a blueprint and problem solving.
The 2010 season “wasn’t acceptable,” McGarity said. “Not to Mark, not to anyone. What you saw from that point was perhaps a refocus, a lot of hard work. Mark has said this before, but when the team was 0-2 there wasn’t a lot of finger pointing. Credit goes to the staff and everybody in the program for not disintegrating. The proof is in the record.”
The loss to Alabama still stings. McGarity called it one of the three most difficult defeats he ever has been associated with. The other two: Georgia’s 27-23 loss to Penn State in the Sugar Bowl (1982 season). The Florida women’s tennis team’s NCAA championship loss to Stanford (after leading 5-3 in the deciding set).
“What made the Sugar Bowl loss even worse was the winning touchdown was scored by a player named Gregg Garrity,” he said. “No relation.”
That game was for a national championship. The defeat four weeks ago wasn’t, but the stakes were almost as big.
“You’re fortunate in this business when the great wins in this business outnumber the tough days,” he said. “It just seems the tough losses stay with you the longest.”
The losses mean there’s room for improvement. The losses, and even fear of losses, keeps you a little comfortable. Maybe even paranoid. Nobody should expect that to change.

Yo Buckeye your coach thinks when the program is about to have a couple years down its time to join ESPN. Wonder if he will go back to ESPN once Miller’s eligibility is up lol Tech coach has man boobs and can not recruit to save his life. Mark is a top 25 football coach no doubt. We saw a lot of less accomplished men get hired at ” football” schools the last few weeks. Richt is so close to have Georgia as a regular national power, but comes up short in 3 or so areas. Ok, I list my 3. Allowing under performing assit. coach’s to stay on staff. Roster management. Game day decision making….. And for good measure, I’ll add he’s letting the cream get out of state. Dawgs only have 2 commits this year from the top 10 rated players. Now, those who come will be fine……but it could be better. I’ll end with a personal opinion. I don’t think McGarity believes in HIS heart that Richt is 100 % focused 24/7/365 getting a NC.

Still not sold on Richt being the coach to get UGA to the elite level. Record against top 10 teams still has not improved to a level of where it should be. After reviewing the past season, I feel next year will be the year to either stay with Richt or let him go. I say let him go and get Petrino or Smart. At this level it’s all about championships not beating Vanderbilt,Kentucky and Gerogia Tech evvery year.

Improvement is the key word. Why didn’t our coaches have us prepared for the S. Carolina game this past season? Why didn’t we adjust and decide to block Clowney? Unpreparedness like this game can’t happen again. The players gave all of their heart each and every game. Never once did I feel like our players were not playing hard. I feel like the coaches stepped up and focused after the carolina game debacle.
I think the fact that we get to bring in a new recruiting coordinator will provide a positive impact to the program. We need a fresh start in this area. Read too often about top guys getting offered too late in the process. And too many players in the recent past have gotten kicked off the team for disciplinary reasons.
Will Grantham stay loyal and continue to improve the defense? Rush defense was atrocious last season.
Will Bobo have back-to-back very good play-calling seasons? Many questions with most programs, but the bottom line is that we hit rock bottom two years ago. We have climbed back up the hill very quickly. We need to continue to improve in every facet of the program to get us right back to a chance at a national title game appearance.

Anything less than the dismissal of Coach Richt and his staff smells ‘comfortable’ to me. If you are not ‘comfortable’, then that means you are looking to improve. Georgia is not looking to improve or get better at certain things, as he states. Why would I say that? Absolutely nothing has changed or been adjusted in 12 seasons. Maybe a change in some responsibilities here and there, but nothing major has changed. McGarity is ‘comfortable’ with Richt’s approach to running this program. If your boss is uncomfortable, then he/she will be more than happy to replace you. After all, it’s about your boss make themselves look good, not you.

Spot on, JB, but I don’t know what Richt can do about the recruiting issue. I understand the exodus of talent to Bama – who doesn’t want to play in the Big Game 3 outta 4 years? I also understand some going to Auburn – for the obvious reasons.

Bird hair good point about rock bottom!!! I think the program has some issues but think about this we have arguably best offense in the nation next year. Line has been together all year. Beard and hopefully Tunsel with some of the reserves stepping up give us depth. On defense Taylor, Thornton, Garrison! Drew will be ready with hopefully Adams and Atkins. Schedule is set that if we go 3-1 we will be back in championship game with Bama, LSU and A&M will lose linemen. A&M loses 2 1st round Tackles.

Felt like our offensive line was very good last season…better than I expected. Nearly the entire o-line will return next seasonn and if we lock-in Tunsil our O-line could be borderline great.
I think Murray would be wise to return for his senior season. He needs to work on his calibration. Too many times he would stare down his receiver and he didn’t look around the field before making a decision. I’d also like to see him avoid taking so many sacks and just get rid of the ball out-of bounds!
I feel for Mason, but hope that he and Murray can successfully share time next season and can be a productive tandem without issue.
Definitely biggest questions lie within the defense since we are losing so many in the draft or to graduation. Will grantham simplify things for the young kids? We saw some tough growing pains under Grantham early in his tenure. Can he stay focused and coach-up these kids?

I believe the DAWGS are on the right track. A tweak here and there will make a huge difference but it all starts with recruiting and it kills me that a lot of our star players leave the state and go to Alabama no less! DAWGS have to shore up this problem! Offense was bussing this year but the “D” line was on vacation most of the year. Is Gardner responsible for this? He has to be at least for part of it which includes the first point……recruiting!

Those who complain about UGA recruiting are simply silly. UGA has been top-10 ranked about every year as long as I can remember. BTW, recruiting ranking is not an exact science, you can be really #2 when you are ranked #9. In addition, UGA always gets its share of the prominent recruits, like Isiah Crowell. My hope is that we bring in a recruiting coordinator who will get out in front and offer the big-time players early in the process and at the same time give weight to the character of the person. We’ve wasted so much time and effort recruiting kids who only turnover after a year as a result of discipline issues. Let’s do better homework on these kids. Let’s also focus more on kids in our own back yard…like within 60 miles of campus! Winning and having great coaches will only help to attract kids from outside the southeast area.

Mark Richt career 11-1 vs Georgia Tek. Btw Richt is 40-4 overall vs. non-sec (regular season). Only losses to Georgia Tech, OK State, Colorado, Boise State.
2001- 2012 Overall record: 117-39, .750 win %. Out of those 39 losses only 9 were against teams that were not currently ranked at time of game.

UGA had as good a year as they will ever have under CMR. He is a good coach and an even better man. At least we are making progress in that we finally didn’t get blown out in a big game and could have easily won. That is a good thing and I am proud of the effort since the Florida game. Just continue with four quarters of hard nosed football and there will be a huge difference. CMR is beginning to add depth to the roster.

Pryor was Cam before Cam – if that makes sense – big, fast, strong-armed. Maybe he turns out more like Cam in the NFL, than like JaMarkus Russell.
Crowell will get a shot too, after next season. A big fast, RB is always in demand in the NFL. Lord knows what he will do with it, though.

Bairdhair don’t waste your time. All the sad people like GTBob and Buckeye are going to say is how Murray can’t win a big game, UGA is pathetic lately, etc, etc. They like to repeat themselves. They don’t like to look at the big picture. Instead, they like to look at just the past few seasons. Richt is obviously a fine coach. It is accurate, but think about it:
1) we finally didn’t get blown out in a big game
2) proud of the effort since the Florida game (game #8) (after S Williams belittled the D for its effort)
3) we have to hope for 4 quarters
4) richt is beginning to add depth
Again, accurate, but damn sad that you are saying all that about our coach’s 12th season . . .

Sorry, but no one really cares about close. There is a reason that teams like Alabama continue to win games like that and teams like UGA can’t. In the last 5 years your team is 3-16 against teams that finished ranked. You are 16-20 in the same time frame against teams with winning records. You have all of the recruits, money, and resources in the world and that is the best you could do with it.

Here’s a question for Richt and staff:
In the SECCG, it was pretty well known that Alabama’s lines were dominant (even if not as dominate in 2011). On offense, the key was to run them around a little bit, like A&M and LSU did. However, we kept running Gurley up the middle, straight at them. He’s a great back and it worked to some degree, but why not bounce Marshall outside as well to tire out those big fellas. If this happened, maybe Bama doesn’t have the gas to deflect that last pass. On defense, in the second half, we continued to overcommit at the line after it became clear that we were overmatched and tired (missing tackles) to compete at the line. At that point, ADJUST. Play a bit futher back. Contain. Prevent the big plays. Giving up 350 yards on the ground is what ultimately cost us the game, not what happened on the final play. At halftime, Saban said the team that can run the ball in the second half would win the game – he was likely holding back on the run until the second half because he knew we’re not great at making in-game adjustments.
I guess this makes me a member of McGarity’s “SOTM.” But he’s a very smart man and I bet has the same doubts/questions because it goes along with never being comfortable. AMEN for that management approach!

But answer this: which head coach had Matthew Stafford, AJ Green, Knowshon Mareno, Mohamed Massaquoi, Asher Allen, Justin Houston, Geno Atkins, Rashad Jones, Brandon Boykin, and a half-dozen O-linemen that currently draw salaries in the NFL, all one one team, and didn’t even win his DIVISION?

McGarity and Evans with their scheduling expertise have improved the record with some good players to get uga into back to back SEC championship games. Uga played way over their heads and Bama took them lightly in the first half to come close! It was a very good showing by the fifth best team in the conference(Bama, Texas AM, LSU, and USC)! The problem is coming next year when the schedule gets a little tougher, uga loses a ton of talent, and USC, Florida, and Tennessee are much better! The last two years was uga’s opportunity to join the big boys and become an elite program and they didn’t make it! Richt knows it and that is why there is no buyout and he was so upset and rationalizing after the Bama game!

You should have asked McGarity if he’s healed from the azz chewing he received from Mike Slive for taking his complaint about the hit on Murray to the media before taking it to the Mike!!!!!! My source tells me he was blistered and good!!! There is rank and respect a coach or an AD has with the SEC office and McGarity doesn’t have it yet. I’m told he looked like the principal from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when seen leaving Mike Slive’s office. When you have one player poking eyes and another going for a killshot of the head of the QB then you don’t go to the media to complain about your player getting smacked!
So sit down and shut up Greg! You earn respect not demand it.

I’ve always wondered just how much money UGA made off of Herschel Walker being there. I’d imagine the figure would be staggering. That would go for a lot of players at a lot of other places, as well, but Herschel is good example and he made UGA football what it is today. There recruiting reach didn’t go very far until he came along.

Any talk of CMR being canned is simply reflecting intelligence. Ghengis Khan and Alexander The Great couldn’t trump Nick Saban’s work with BAMA over the past 4 years. The man has recruiting on-lock and, as long as he is with BAMA, is THE man to beat.
I do believe we can surpass LSU, FLA, and SCe, over the next few years, but BAMA is a stretch……and that is why so many of these moon pie and cracklin bread eatin’ cooters want blood.
Do we really want to go backwards, rather than forward, simply for the sake of change? Do you think CTG would remain at UGA without CMR?

Jeff,
Alabama, in addition to their coaching staff, skirts the SEC rules about total coaches by hiring “analysts”. They, of course, take on coaching duties.
Going forward, Georgia needs to focus more on young, in-state, talent and begin recruiting them as soon as possible. ALSO….Blair Walsh’s success as a rookie in Minnessota shoud shine a BIG LIGHT, on the poor coaching regarding technique for kickers and special teams.
Overall, I am very pleased at how Georgia has performed during Richt’s tenure. The only thing he is missing is a BCS TITLE.

Soft schedule…maybe…of course before the season started Texas A&M was supposed to be pretty bad, Missouri was supposed to be good, Ole Miss was supposed to be pathetic, FSU-USC-Ark-MSU-WVU were top ten teams…isn’t college football a blast…the DAWGS dealt with the other side of the line as they were scheduled…took care of business and had a dang good season…gave Bama all they could handle…the Gamecock game was an abomination, and I feel that the four defensive players being suspended as the big reason that this team wasn’t firing on all cylinders for that game…knot-heads, selfish self centered players (no, they can’t be counted as teammates because teammates don’t let you down)…they have a great group of players on campus coming back…give UGA any schedule you want next year and they may just surprise you nay sayers…

All these people keep pointing to an easy schedule. UGA’s 42nd and UA 39. Anyone thing UA is in the title game because they had an easy schedule? PLUS the strength of schedule is based on wins and losses. IF it were truly based on how strong your opponent was, OSU wouldn’t have a schedule in the top 100.
And these Alabama red necks that post here like they were so far and above us. They are simply blind running lucky to be playing for the National Championship. And they will win because Notre Dame wouldn’t be in the top 5 teams in the SEC.

But the funnier thing you wrote was saying that someone else was about stupid. Do you know the WHOLE STATE of GA laughs out loud when someone from Alabama says someone is stupid? Do you know that there are whole books written with Alabama jokes making fun of the stupidity, backwardness and in-bredness of people from Alabama? You people are dumber than a box of hammers. Your whole lives revolve around a ball game played by kids. That is your sole source of pride. The whole country enjoys your football team, and makes fun of your residents. When you cross the Alabama line the roads instantly get crappier, there is trash strewn everywhere, its like a third world country. Three Simple Reasons Why We’ve Strugged against South Carolina Lately!
2010: AJ Green was suspended 4 straight games, look back at the Georgia @ South Carolina Highlights 2010, I guarantee you AJ Green would’ve made a lot more TD passes to the endzone. That’s one of the problems with our football program lately, suspensions & no descipline have cost us football games.
2011: We were at home, too many turnovers, special team mistakes, our O-line failed to protect Clowney! South Carolina faked us several times & our defense gave up so many yards. We were embarassed by Clowney’s fumble making it 45-35! Although we finished 45-42 but the on side kick failed…
2012: If we would’ve beat SC in 2010 or 2011, the 2012 game would’ve never been so big for gamecock fans, they knew 2012 was their best chance for a 3 year streak against us bulldogs, which made the crowd so electric & we never protected Clowney again… it seems like our coaching staff will never learn that Spurrier will always play us hard no matter what, we never prepared for it, suspensions cost us that game as well.
If Alabama was able to handle LSU in death valley, why couldn’t we handle South Carolina in gamecock territory, idk….
The last two South Carolina teams we beat (2008 & 2009) were 7-6 South Carolina teams we barely beat, BARELY, even in 2008 we were ranked #2 and still struggled with South Carolina. South Carolina has not been easy these past several years whether we are at home or in Columbia, SC!!! 2013 we get home field advantage against the gamecocks, the good news is, our O-line & hopefully Aaron Murray will be coming back with Gurshall, Mitchell, Bennett, etc. The bad news is, our defense will be rebuilding trying to go against Senior QB Connor Shaw with an experienced O-line, OUCH!!!!

Herman I think you should get into politics, you THINK you are very good at spinning those numbers that don’t lie. However, the fact is that none of the other teams you listed played any schedules over the last two years that were tougher than the one UGA played. Strength of schedule is based on rankings and rankings are the best indication of the quality of the team???? Are you kidding me? Rankings are how Northern IL is in the Orange Bowl and Louisville is in the Sugar Bowl. Ridiculous way to measure the actual strength of your opponent.
For example, anyone who played Notre Dame suddenly gets a big boost to their SOS because Notre Dame is ranked number 1. But in reality Notre Dame would get the gold beat off their helmets by any of the top 6 teams in the SEC and MIGHT get beat by 3 more. Yet they are ranked number 1.
Of the teams you listed, Kansas State…………………PULEEEEEEZZZ, 9 SEC teams could beat K State. Stanford plays maybe two good opponents all year, Oregon plays a couple, Boise State beat UGA once and OK once, in FOREVER and are back to their rightful place once again as just another school that has a football team, they play NO ONE. LSU built their record this year on the backs of such power houses as North Texas, Idaho, Washington and the mighty Towson Tigers of the Colonial Athletic Association.
If you are not in the SEC you are playing practice games 9-10 weeks out of the year. You can say that UGA hasn’t been as successful over the last few years in big games (not counting a win over the current number 3 and way over ranked team in the country) and you’d be right. But to say that the record has been built on cupcakes is not nearly as true as the schedules of the teams you listed. So the numbers may not lie, but you did using them to make your point.

G McGarity has not accomplished anything in two years at UGA, although he has fired two women sports head coaches – non revenue gymnastics and volleyball. UGA is awful in mens basketball, baseball and gets no respect nationally regarding football due to weak schedule and not beating but one team in several years that was a top ranked team, Florida 2012, DON’T FORGET SOUTH CAROLINA HAS BEAT OUR A** FOR THREE STRAIGHT YEARS, we cannot beat all 6 teams in our east division and four of them are terrible. STRAIGHT TALK is not what disney dawgs want to hear. UGA mens basketball is getting worse if that is possible. UGA baseball is getting worse. UGA football has improved due to the weak schedule but still has yet to achieve expectations.

And if your Lexus is driving on one I don’t know how you are going to replace those little tires on that radio controlled RX300 because that is as close to a Lexus as a moron like you will ever have.
I was on a plane to Denver this year and this Alabama grad was sitting next to me. Seemed nice enough. After a while the pilot comes over the speakers and says “This is your pilot speaking. I regret that I ahve to inform you that the engine under the right wing has gone out. Everything is fine we still have the left engine and the tail engine. But we will be an hour late on arrival to Denver.” Guy sitting next to me says ” I hope I don’t miss my connection because we arrive late.” About an hour later the pilot comes on again and says “This is your pilot speaking. I regret to inform you that we have lost the engine under the left wing. However we still have the tail engine and we will be just fine although we will be arriving in Denver 2 hours later than scheduled.” Guy from AL looks at me and says ” If that other engine goes out we’re gonna be up here all dam night.”

IF UGA WON in the SEC Championship, who honestly thinks Georgia with Mark Richt and Aaron Murray at the helm, would have even kept it close with Notre Dame? Murray would have thrown a pick 6 with his first pass and pissed his pants the rest of the game. It would have been 14-0 after a bonehead special teams gaffe, and Georgia would have lost 31-10 against Notre Dame’s defensive line in the backfield all night. Georgia is nowhere close to elite… They lost 2 of 3 biggest games this year, and almost lost to Kentucky and Tennesee. Elite teams don’t do this. I’ve never been in “the society of the miserable.” I’ve been in “the society of fulfilling one’s potential.” I have been critical of Mark Richt and personally would have canned him after the 6-7 season. However, I’m not a Richt hater. I’m a Dawg lover AND I’m a realist. The Dawgs were underachieving under Richt, but since we kept Richt and gave him an opportunity to turn it around we should let him do that. No realist expects a coach to take a 6-7 team and overtake Bama in two seasons. That is unrealistic. Richt has done a good job the past two years. He’s gone from 6-7 to winning the East to taking Bama to the wire. That’s good improvement. Kudos to coach Richt and his staff. However, there is still unfinished business. Richt has to keep his foot on the gas as Schultz says. That is why I’m glad McGarrity is there. He will keep the pressure on. Richt has had a tendency to relax after a good year in the past.

Sure he is. Except for a few little issues…
What about the 53 arrests in the past four years?
What about the Fulmer Cup?
What about Isaiah Crowell?
What about Caleb King and Washaun Ealey?
What about AJ Green making one of the lowest Wunderlic scores ever recorded?
What about all the dawgs who are busted for illegal drug use every time they have a surprise test?
What about the joke phony majors that Richt sticks most of his dummies in?
What about a team full of morons whose IQs barely exceed the intelligence of vegetables?
And on and on it goes, with no end to the embarrassment and shame that Mark Richt brings to UGA?
So you see, Richt is the biggest douchebag this side of Lane Kiffin. That’s your UGA reality.

McGarity should can the name calling . He may run the train but that does not mean we all have to be a passenger on it. He should read the vents and listen to the average fans with an open mind, not just the ones in skyboxes and big money alums. Richt is a good coach and his record speaks for itself. That does not mean he does not make some bone head decisions. We all do. We need to learn from them. Richt does not seem to see it that way and continues to make the same ones over and over.

Yes any team should be looking to improve. Once you get comfortable you get caught. I bet Saban isn’t comfortable or Kelly. The biggest strides UGA made this year was off the field. We brought in two running backs with character. Thank God Ealy, Crowell and King are all history. This team pulled together and it took leadership like a Williams to lead. So yes we are heading in the right direction as long as we recruit character and expect them to respect the G on that helmet.

Aundera you are full of it, Name the 53 arrested players. There have only been 5 since Dec 2010. You think Richt encouraged Crowell to carry a gun or Caleb and Washaun to drive with a suspended license in case you didn’t notice those players are not on the team. AJ Green makes 5 million per season guaranteed and that doesn’t include his endorsement contract with Nike and his next contract after making the pro bowl his 1st 2 years will far exceed his first contract so who really cares what his wunderlic score was . Wow all 2 of those dawgs busted for positive test in 2012. . Richt doesn’t choose a players majors , and where do you find the IQ scores of the Georgia players ? The UGA fans are by far the worse in terms of support and common sense.
30 plus years since a Championship, but yet UGA fans are smart enough to see all that NFL talent falling short while on the campus in Athens. The off season predictions and prognosis of great things to come only to lose those games that count.
Once again the UGA faithful have a right to be mad, upset, disappointed and bewildered over how this team is always looking up at the rest of the league.

gofman, I have to disagree with you there. I still believe Coach Fox is a good basketball coach. Recruiting is the problem. Look at our stands, you may be right all the fans care about are football. No like any place anybody will support a winner. UGA has never kissed these AAU coaches butts and I hope they never will. Right now you don’t get the top recruits unless you do. In baseball, I don’t think Coach Perno gets the respect he should. It is just because he is a home town fellow. He has done a consistent and good job with the baseball program. If anything the draft has hurt him. We never did anything consistently in baseball until Coach Polk and Coach Perno took over.

I guess you are really demonstrating the level of education you earned in Georgia. I guess you think support has to do with ONLY 92,000 in the stands? How about the BOOING during games this year, last year, the year before last! How about the beatings that Murray has taken including getting his house egged and papered this year! How about the annual calling of Richt, Bobo and others to be fired?
GO back and read the post game comments from UGA Fans after the USC game this year, or live game comments during the Tennessee game, or Florida games.

Speaking of BB Alabama has invested about 8 million todate on Coach Grant hoping he could bring Bama BB up to page one and that move is on hold. In year 4 he has 8 people on scholly (needs to have a sitdown with Nick Saban) and we’re awful at best. UGA isn’t on page one either and like Bama it appears that will not happen in 2013. I guess we understand how the Vandy and Kentucky football fans feel each year. Not sure how often UGA changes the BB uniforms but I think Bama is getting the same results regardless. It is amazing that our teams can’t find 12 players to give a scholly that could compete with Mercer or lesser teams in BB.

I believe there is a fundamental flaw in the UGA program. The offensive scheme works against the defense instead of complimenting it. It’s a great scheme but it results in quick touchdowns. It’s hard to complain about that but it does forces the defense to stay on the field for many more plays than the opposition. Result? Even with our great atheletes on defense, they cannot hold up. To reverse that we need to be able to run the ball when it’s absolutely necessary like Bama did on us. And so you see the difference between the two teams and why one wins national championships. Bama gets the elite offensive linemen while that remains a problem for UGA under Richt.

USC finally got good but that is usually and ez win so I guess it is swapped with Tenn these days. Kentucky, Vandy, Mizzou, Tech, Ga Sou or the likes, Fla Atl, and Coastal Carolina on the schedule every year, UGa should be in a Bowl while walking blind through the season with the talent the dWags get.

Not sure where you got your football Grad numbers from but during the last 5 years the numbers have fallen.
As for USC they have owned UGa the last 5 years.
You keep wanting to go back 10 plus years to spin things but get up to date a look at the last 5 more relevant years.
It takes losers like you who always spin things and use outdated facts and figures to spin that point.
How about the number of UGa players who have criminal records playing for UGa going up during the last 5 years?
Your arguments fail and your points are not sharp!

I think the fact that we get to bring in a new recruiting coordinator will provide a positive impact to the program. We need a fresh start in this area. Read too often about top guys getting offered too late in the process. And too many players in the recent past have gotten kicked off the team for disciplinary reasons.

Ghost,
I think Tough Love was trying to say that UGA has admitted onto the team incoming freshmen that have criminal records at a rate that is twice what it was 10 years ago. I also read the article I think he was trying to compare stats to.
If I remember correctly( the article was published in September) it stated that UGA and Florida had more than any other teams by a pretty big margin of players who PRIOR to arriving at UGA or Florida had arrest records as juveniles and or adults. LSU was third, Tenn was 4th, and surprising was that Vanderbilt was in the middle of the pack, but UGA and Florida were head and shoulders above everyone else in admittance to their respective schools.

@Ghost instead of demanding UGA win every game in the division you choose to attack me the poster with questions about South Carolina history. I am a UGA alum and could care less about South Carolina.
It is those like yourself that do not demand results on the field and judge themselves by comparison to others. If you win all your games you end up in first place – ” IF YOUR NOT FIRST YOU ARE LAST “. Only one bowl game matters, Alabama vs Notre Dame. All the others are no different than other shows giving entertainment. Bowl games are for the players, admins etc. to get a free trip at the EXPENSE of everyone else. Some of these games are at good venues while others suck for the fans. We are playing a team that got beat by 50 points or more twice and gave up 70 plus, this is not a joke is it? Nebraska has sold less than 4K tickets, UGA will not release the numbers but are way under the total guarantee, much like last year when UGA paid hundreds of thousands for unsold tickets to the Outback Bowl. This is not on the fans, the fact that UGA is not any longer respected nationally for bowl games Florida gets the trip to the Sugar Bowl. WEAK LEADERSHIP AT BUTTS MEHRE and no power in the SEC conference because of Michael Adams, McQuackity and others who chose to water down everything regarding UGA SPORTS. While we did experience exciting moments at times this year, the 2012 Season has to go down as a total failure. Why? we did not WIN THE SEC or make it to a top tier bowl against a top tier opponent – much less the NCG. One thing about our former RED PANTIES AD, he wanted to compete on a national map and was always pushing UGA to the very best bowl and venues available. McQuackity in nothing more than a leader that enjoys soft weak opponents because enough wins against ” ANY WEAKLING ” is enough for UGA fans to ” BLINDLY ” follow and allow them to keep ” EXHORBANENT SALARIES ” each year while never really accomplishing anything. The UGA sports programs are the gutter of all programs while you people ” SCREAM ” that we generate the third most revenue national yet finish continually in the middle of the pack for SEC Football and the other sports programs are failures.
” UGA SPORTS FAILURE CONTINUES OUT OF BUTTS MEHRE AND STILL NO ONE IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE OR PROVIDES LEADERSHIP “. UGA MENS SPORTS PROGRAMS ARE A DAMN DISGRACE.
McQuackity needs to go with Adams, patience is not an excuse for the failure to act . McQuackity comments and quotes show nothing more than a weakness at leadership and fosters the continuing divide among the old blue hairs in power and the younger UGA ALUMS who strive for excellance and being number one in all competition. EXCEPTING FAILURE HAS BECOME THE NORM FOR McQUACKITY AND THE UGA ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT!!!

Gamechanger, Sorry guy, I got half way through your post and puked at the part where going 11-2 winning the East is a total failure. You might want to take a look at who everyone in the SEC plays out of Conference, Georgia is just following suit. If you knew anything about the BCS and bowl structure you would realize Georgia wasn’t passed over for a BCS game . Florida finished in top 4 therefore they are automatically extended a BCS offer.Since a conference is limited to 2 invitations Georgia by playing and losing in the SEC championship game gets left out.It has nothing to do with with being disrespected. As for Nebraska , no one gets to choose who they play in a bowl. In case you missed it Northern Illinois and Louisville are playing in BCS bowls.
Georgia did get the best bowl available for an SEC team , outside the BCS. But keep believing what you want to believe , but I suggest that you take a look at the rest of SEC and who they played OOC. Perhaps you should do a little research before posting .

Yes, Game Changer’s post was mostly mindless, with one exception: His take on UGA’s disgraceful OOC scheduling and Damon Evans’ willingness to “spread the brand” is spot on.
Hiding behind the old “But everyone else is doing it” excuse is cowardly at best. DON’T be like everyone else! Step up and play somebody for a change. DON’T drop Oregon. Play Clemson EVERY year. DON’T play any more weak-azz FCS teams! No more Buffalos, Coastal Carolinas, New Mexico States, LA-Lafayettes, FLA Atlantics, Idaho States, Tennessee Techs, Central Michigans, Western Carolinas, Troys, etc. It’s disgraceful.
And above all, DON’T hide behind that “tough SEC schedule” BS. When you play Vandy and KY EVERY year, you already have two built-in cupcakes. And NO, Vandy’s not worth a damn. Don’t believe it? Check our record against the mighty commode doors. Total domination.
Enough already with the marshmallow OOC scheduling. You earn respect by playing respectable opponents–HOME & HOME! It’s WAY past time for UGA to start down that path.

Somebody HAS to step up, Ghost. And others in the conference (Bama, LSU, Tenn) DO play major programs home & home. It’s just time, and I hope the new “playoff” format starting in 2014 will provide “motivation” for ALL FBS teams to upgrade their schedules.
FSU, my “other” favorite team that’s been as guilty as anyone (in RECENT years) of playing cupcakes, just announced that they were moving toward a stronger OOC schedule, and I couldn’t be more pleased.
Can’t agree with you on dropping Tech. Even though we’ve owned them for the past decade-plus, that’s an old, traditional in-state rivalry that should never go away. They are, after all, an FBS team (unlike too many of the weakling we bring in to Athens) with a storied history of their own. Besides, there’s nothing like reading their moaning on the blogs after beating them down over and over again in that season finale. I actually pull for the Jackets (Heresy!) unless they’re playing UGA or FSU because I always want that Thanksgiving weekend game to pit UGA against a nationally ranked rival. Remember when we beat them in ATL (in ‘09) when they were ranked #7? Doesn’t get much better than that. Seldom happens, of course.

Gamechanger , Strange , I thought it was Georgia not Florida or SC that played Bama for a chance to go to the National championship. Seriously , Georgia beat Florida , Florida beat SC, Georgia and Florida didn’t lose another conference game SC did. Is Florida not in the east? Next season SC plays Ole Miss and Georgia plays LSU ,do you understand how it works ? Its the Southeasterrn conference you play who the SEC tells you to play. It was unfortunate SC couldn’t beat an Auburn in 2011 and Georgia beat them 45-7. Just in case you missed it LSU won a National championship in 2007 and lost to Kentucky. You may also want to inform Florida that Mizzou is a given , 14-7 in the swamp with Mizzou driving fro the game tieing score in the 4 th quarte. Or perhaps Tennessee was such a given it took a late 4th quarter turnover for SC to hold on for a win in Colombia or that blowout win that SC had over Vandy to open the season.there are no givens, only a uneducated fool would have such a notion.
