Falcons understand that wins, No. 1 seed only set stage

Calvin Johnson is a special player but the Falcons may be a special team. (Detroit Free Press photo)

DETROIT – The schedule says there is a game left. The coach, Mike Smith, says, “We’ve said all along that if there’s games left to be played, we’re going to play them to win.” (And in his head, he probably adds: “Even if we play them with Luke McCown.”)

But this is the reality: Nobody is thinking about Game 16 against Tampa Bay. It’s about what happens in three weeks and that’s where everybody’s thoughts are. There’s no pressure to win the regular season finale next Sunday, no requirement to play in the first round of the playoffs, no pressure to jazz up the resume.

“We’ve done everything we can,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said late Saturday night following his team’s 31-18 win over Detroit, which secured a bye and the NFC’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs. “Now we just have to go do it.” In the playoffs, he means.

Imagine being outfitted with the best ski equipment and taking four months of lessons, then one day being dropped at the top of a mountain and being told, “Try to get to the bottom without wiping out.”

That’s where the Falcons are today.

They’re 13-2. They can walk to the finish line of the regular season. Two weeks ago, they wowed skeptics and believers with a 34-0 win over New York. In Detroit, rather than suffer from the kind of emotional blahs that have plagued them, they jumped out to a 21-3 lead, endured some bumps in the third quarter (as Calvin Johnson took a wrecking ball to the NFL record book) and then pulled away in the fourth.

Blank is right. The Falcons have done all they can do. Now, it’s just a matter of validating their record.

They won’t know their opponent for two weeks. But after quick exits in 2008 (Arizona), 2010 (Green Bay) and 2011 (New York), their focus is, and should be, more on themselves. The words, “It’s not about them, it’s about us,” might as well be stamped on their foreheads.

“Going into the Giants game, we knew a lot of questions were going to be answered,” Tony Gonzalez said. “I think that day we realized how good we can be. Maybe we even surprised ourselves a little. But that helped us. The focus that we had that week of practice was the same focus we had in preparation for (Detroit). And yes, we’ve been here before. We’ve had a top seed. We’ve had a bye. It doesn’t mean anything. But this time we’ll come out focused and ready to roll.”

Safety Thomas DeCoud viewed the Lions game as another test passed. “We proved we can carry over from a really big win. We had a lights-out game against New Orleans but then just went through the motions against Carolina. It’s nice to know we can get this out of our system.”

There were some concerns before this game. Linebacker Mike Peterson, one of the team’s emotional leaders, walked into the locker room following warmups and sensed it was too quiet. So he banged two cymbals together, figuratively speaking.

“He riled us up,” Roddy White said.

Peterson smiled when asked about his pregame antics. He was the one who marched the team out of the tunnel and right through the Lions’ quasi-blockade for warmups in Detroit last season.

“They wanted to be relaxed,” he said. “When you’ve had success one game, the natural thing is to feel like you’ve made it. So I was just trying to keep the guys up, let them know what’s at stake.”

The Falcons started fast. Matt Ryan attacked early and often, completing his first 12 attempts and 15 of 16. He threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns. In the last two games, he is 48 for 60 passing (including 22 straight completions) for 549 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions. The MVP candidacy just circled back.

Detroit’s defense focused on stopping Gonzalez (one catch). So White and Julio Jones (15 catches, 224 yards, three touchdowns combined) destroyed them.

Defensively, the Falcons gave up a ton of yards (522). Matthew Stafford threw for 443, more than half of that to Johnson (11 for 225). But the Lions reached the end zone only once, going one for four in the red zone. That’s why they’re 4-11. That’s why the Falcons are 13-2.

Said Ryan, “When you have a combination of guys who are committed to doing everything the right way, you have fun doing it.”

This much we know: The backdrop is impressive.

Jeff, that 3rd quarter makes me nervous of the playoffs. Mike Smith scares me sitting on leads. Most times, that just wears down your own D, and hands over momentum.

What do you think?

Matt “Choke” Ryan – You know my policy on banning generally is limited to matters pertaining to race, profanity, etc. But I’m considering expanding the criteria just for you. So while you’re welcome to be critical of somebody or something, if the only purpose of you commenting on a blog is to stir up trouble and provoke a response (or responses), understand that you may be banned. And yes, this is completely subjective on my part. So be careful where you step from this moment forward. And this is your one and only warning. And no, I’m not up for a debate.

I still think they should play the starters in the first half and then pull everybody out after halftime. Coaches like to think guys deserve a break, but some playoff games and THEN you deserve an entire game off.

Smitty coaches like he has in playoffs past, he deserves all of next season off!

I expect there will be a debate, probably sooner rather than later, about resting starters in the last game. my 2¢ is that I would be against it, if I were running things. If the starters don’t play the last week and then you have the bye week coming up, it’s 3 weeks from this game to the next one. How many times have you seen a team come out flat after a bye week or a layoff? If you have a guy who is fighting an injury (more than just the normal wear and tear) then it might be the thing to do but, in my opinion, if you go with 2nd teams in the last game and then you have the bye week, you’re playing with fire. We all know what can happen to a team that comes out flat in a playoff game, sometimes they get it together, sometimes they get it together too late, and sometimes they never get it together at all. So I’d treat the last game just like the first or any other game.

I would play the defense the entire game. You don’t want a cold defense heading into the playoffs. The only player I’d let sit this game is Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez. Maybe Roddy White to get that knee 100%. But everybody else is playing. The O-line, the running backs, the defense, etc. Luke McCown can beat Tampa. No doubt about it. He’s not good as Ryan, but he can beat Tampa next week.

This is from Pat Yasinskas, who unlike Ledbetter and even Shultzie, is willing to say some truth about the stubborn, play-not-to-lose coaching of Mike Smith. Yas includes Koetter in this, but I think we all know from the last four-plus years of the Falcons stupid need to take their foot off the gas that it is Smith, not Koetter, who is the variable that’s never changed in Atlanta.

From Pat Yasinskas:

“But, again, this isn’t about numbers. It’s about how valuable Ryan is to the Falcons, who, once and for all, need to realize they aren’t the same old Falcons. And coach Mike Smith and offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter need to realize they should stop even attempting to be anything close to the same old Falcons.

Let’s be honest. Running back Michael Turner has had a wonderful run with Atlanta, but his days as the backbone of the offense are long gone. The Falcons are a pass-first team now, and Smith and Koetter need to lose the stubborn streak that’s prompting them to force a running game that just isn’t there anymore.

They almost learned that the hard way against the Lions.

After Ryan played a nearly flawless first half (15 of 16 for 184 yards and three touchdowns) and led Atlanta to a 21-6 halftime lead, the Falcons took the ball out of Ryan’s hands in the third quarter.

They got conservative and tried to force feed Turner at the start of the third quarter. That got them nowhere, and it almost got them into deep trouble. The Lions followed a three-and-out by Atlanta with a touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter, a Detroit field goal cut the lead to 21-16 and all the momentum seemed to shift to the Lions…

… But that’s when the Falcons put the game back into Ryan’s hands…

They’ll only be ready and they’ll only be a different team in the postseason if Smith and Koetter grasp the fact that they’re not going to get anywhere with the running game. They need to grasp the fact that this team can only go a long way if it’s riding Ryan’s arm.

The Falcons can win in the playoffs, maybe even the Super Bowl, if they just let Ryan go out and play like an MVP.”

Pat Yasinskas is saying EVERYTHING so many of us have said about Mike Smith’s insane refusal to stop being such a damn Marty Schottenheimer and embrace the MODERN NFL.

It’s time writers in Atlanta I admire stop writing pretty prose about how the Falcons “took care of business,” and instead shine the light about how they almost threw it all away… AGAIN.

It’s all quite sad. They made a film about it. John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins. It’s quite good.

You see, he looked like a deformed monster, but he was really a gentle, wonderful person.

Rest Michael “The Walrus” Turner until he is released. Yesterday, he gained over half of his paltry yardage on ONE Play out of thirteen attempts. However, for the nonsensical reason of placating him & Smitty, Turner could still be used to handle kickoff returns – it would then be interesting to see whether he could get out to the 5-yard line before collapsing!

To compound matters, Turner is central to Smitty’s obsession with trying to sit on a lead – like in his patented 3rd quarter fiasco yesterday. This variant of choking will not cut it in the playoffs. It not only makes the offense perform pathetically, but it seriously degrades the play of the defense.

As long & repeatedly asserted by respondents on the AJC blogs, the Falcons FINALLY need to get serious about having a credible running game, and hence having a more versatile/less predictable offense. That means Snelling & Rogers in a “Committee of TWO”.

There is a limit on miracles by the passing offense as well as on defensive takeaways. Playoff caliber opposition can make this painfully clear.

I don’t think the Giants are making the playoffs. In order for them to make it, they must beat the Eagles, have Detroit beat Chicago, have the Rams beat the Seahawks, and Washington beat Dallas. JUST to make the #6 seed. I just don’t see it happening. The Giants are done.

Funny, JSS, for a intellectual titan such as yourself, you don’t know an incredibly Barney-easy Groundhogs Day reference or that the film is from the 90’s?

Silly, pitiful, little, little man.

Seven years later, and you still feel the need to come here day after day with your b.s. preaching about this or that.

Six years later, and you still must feed your psychotic need to impress everyone here by quoting facts without context and half-truths stretched to the breaking-point to try and make your ignorant arguments.

Five years later, and you can’t stop talking at anyone long enough to know that Jeff just banned one of the only people on the blog who LIKED you… and he was the guy NO ONE LIKED.

What’s that say about YOU???

As before, I just pity you.

I seriously just pity you and your waste of a life that affords you all of this free time to come here.

Poor little man. Poor, poor small man. Small in the most pejorative way the word can be used.

I know this, most people who say the Falcons won’t win a playoff game also thought this was the year of the “dream team”, and thought Cam Newton would be a force in the NFL this season.

So, they are very ugly 0-2 in predictions, why in the hell would anyone even listen to them? Obviously they don’t know anything about football. Not the first thing.

______________________

Actually, he didn’t ban him–just warned him. But MCR, coward that he is, seized the opportunity to depart in a huff, knowing that he would no longer have to face the blog’s wrath should Ryan take the Falcons deep in the playoffs, which seems more likely with each passing week.

So, mired in defeat–and indignant because he had his wrist slapped–the hater MCR tucked his tail between his legs and fled, because that’s what cowards and liars do. The blog was immediately uplifted and able to enjoy the ATL victory without having to hold its nose in the proximity of MCR’s garbage-flinging.

We can only hope he’s gone for good; the Falcons’ performance this postseason likely will determine that. If they’re one and done, I can’t see him resisting one last deranged potshot at Ryan and all of us “losers.” If they win it all, he’ll be invisible.

The difference, well, one of many differences, between yourself and me, JSS?

I know of my many faults, foibles, and demerits, and never, ever take myself so seriously as you take yourself here.

Which is why I come and go… and you simply can’t leave. Even when others ask you to do so. Even when made plain that you’re unliked.

Tomorrow, I’ll hopefully be feeling better, and find something better to do.

But you’ll still be here. Trying so hard to impress so many who don’t care, who know exactly who you are.

The one thing you continue to engender from us is not any awe at your quasi-intellectualism, but again, pity and worry.

A lot of pity for the one who’s every word for us drips with contempt.

I like to think that proves the good in people. That we can know you here, and instead of feeling anger, revulsion, or some combination of both… we just feel sorry for you.

It really does prove the good in people, I think. :-)

I think that THIS falcons team is far more seasoned, and well coordinated on both sides of the ball than those of recent playoff years. This team is determined to write their own story, and achieve what they have set their sights on. I think that their character has been formed through tough hard-fought games, hi-pressure come from behind victories, and one very embarrassing road loss. This group now knows what needs to be done and how to get it done. As they keep saying, they just need to finish the job.
They have certainly put themselves in the best possible position to succeed. This version of the Falcons will not be defined by the past and will not sway from the ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl. The doubters and naysayers will have their opinions and will no doubt express them while this team just keeps winning and proving them to be the biased hacks they are.

Love your comment Jeff, “I’s all about us.”

Have mentioned this before, but will always hold true: John Wooden never emphasized winning, just always giving 100% esp. in practice. Winning would take care of itself. His national championship teams had games during the season he was more proud of his team losing than winning the nat. chmshp., because they played their very best.

In this age of parity, it sometimes just comes down to who is willing to play their best every single down and not rest.

The Carolina debacle was a perfect example of “Who wants it more?”

Yeah, for the Falcons anything but a ring is failure, but it won’t happen to this club if they just leave it all on the field.

I hope that Coach Smith will treat the Tampa Bay game just like a third pre-season game. Dominant first half performance by starters (not including Turner), followed by one series each in the second half then begin substitutions. Too much off time has a history of poor results for this team and as of late, in this league. My opinion is that if you continue to push yourself as a team, you will continue to achieve the desired results as a team.

We’ve read you make-up B.S. that yesterday’s game was not a great game by Matt Ryan and that Matt Ryan is not the MVP of the 2012 season for the NFL. Sure he is. He has had a great season 2012.

You just don’t want to admit it.

So, you run in here and say rather than comparing his 2012 season with everyone else in the NFL this season and what they meant to their teams 2012, that we have to instead compare Matt Ryan 2012 with what Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees did in 2010 and compare Matt Ryan’s season 2012 with what Tom Brady did in 2007.

Michael Vick and Joe Flacco, we cannot address those TROLLS either attempting to put down Matt Ryan’s NFL MVP 2012 Season, comparing Matt Ryan to them.

So, we put up their season to Matt Ryan’s season and they look horrible compared to what Matt Ryan’s NFL MVP 2012 Season looks like.

You don’t like that.

JSS, you say you never were a Falcons fan, have a better education than we do, and say you have enjoyed rooting on your 1-AA FCS football team for your alma mater, Eastern Michigan, the # 80 US News and World Report REGIONAL college. But, that you don’t root for college football teams ?

And, you say now that you’re in here because fans of no other team have a problem with dissenting voices, but that only the Falcons’ fans on the AJ-C have a problem with dissenting voices ? Yet, when we ask you direct questions, our reply to whatever your responses are, are always the same :

What in the name of Hell did you just say ?

JSS, your replies are indecipherable.

Your summary of yesterday’s game is that Matt Ryan is not even the best QB Rating of his own conference this season.

I thought he played well.

I think Matt Ryan has played well this 2012 season.

I think Matt Ryan has meant more to his team’s success than any player on any team 2012.

You call that fantasy football.

You tell us every one of us sucks.

You tell us the Falcons suck.

You tell us you will NEVER be a fan of the Falcons as long as Arthur Blank owns the team.

Good Heavens, son.

That is not a dissenting voice. That is a little snot hiding behind his keyboard acting as if his doesn’t stink to high freaking heaven, grasping at straws and not summarizing the game the rest of the nation watched all day yesterday in a manner consistent with anything close to reality.

So, you attack us.

So, you attack the fans of the Falcons.

So, you attack the Falcons.

So, you attack Matt Ryan.

So, you attack ALL SOUTHERNERS with Neil Young helping Southern Farmers with your DETROIT hell hole education from a hell hole 4th tier regional college – a NOT a good one at that.

So, you give us URL Links to Kibble and Bits 1981 ads.

So, you give us URL Links to nasty tracks not fit for this blog with incomprehensibly lewd song titles, about your man-love for grown men in the NFL when if that is what you want, please it doesn’t bother me a bit that that is what you want – not my persuasion – but if it’s yours, please I see nothing wrong with that. But, you don’t have to shove down our throats to the unsuspecting masses that your URL Link will take us to a song title like that. I don’t want to hear it. It is a

I do want to hear why it is you think you have earned the right to post that appalling URL Link to that Horrible song track number 6 song title. It is against the rules of posting on the Internet and you know it. Providing that URL Link is a violation of public posting, twit.

What we’ve witnessed is a string of nothing but incomprehensible posts which no one understands.

Lies.

Personal Attacks.

Made-Up Statistics.

And, claims that what I’ve written of my own words is copyrighted material cut and pasted.

You’re a peon on this blog because you make-up whatever the hell you want to make-up to support your desire to run in here and not summarize the same football game all of us watched, but one which apparently only you did.

Matt Ryan 2012 is NOT a fantasy. He’s real. He’s the Real Deal.

Now, I know you know that.

Yes. I did not follow that made-up position of JSS either, Answer This, that none of the 2012 play-off teams fear the Falcons. Yours is a good reply to that; he’ll not address it. He’ll duck the point, and write something no one understands. Then, he will correct his own post, and still no one will know what in the hell he just said. Again.

And, for the record, I firmly believe that all the 2012 play-off teams, fear this Falcons’ Football Team because of what Matt Ryan can do to them. I believe if you ask every NFL Football Team’s players who in 2012 they fear facing the most, that the answer would be unanimous that it’s Matt Ryan 2012, they all fear the most.

JSS Marino played in the Super Bowl. It was his First year as the Full Season Starter but his second season playing. he was quoted as saying “I was young and I didn’t know it was so hard to get to the Super Bowl. I never made it back but I never even imagined I wouldn’t play in another Super Bowl.”

After starting the season as a backup to incumbent starter David Woodley, Marino was given his first NFL start in Week 6 versus the Buffalo Bills. Marino and Miami lost that game 38–35 in overtime. As a rookie, Marino set several records: he posted a 96.0 passer rating, he was selected to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, he had the lowest percentage of passes intercepted with 2.03, he was the only rookie quarterback to lead a conference in passing, and he had the highest passing completion percentage with 58.45

In the following year, the Dolphins finished with a 14–2 regular season record, clinching home-field advantage for the playoffs. In the first round, the Dolphins avenged their playoff loss of the previous season to Seattle Seahawks 31–10, and they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game 45–28.
In Super Bowl XIX, Marino and the Dolphins faced off against San Francisco 49ers and Joe Montana in Palo Alto, California. The Dolphins, who had 74 rushing attempts in the previous two weeks, ran the ball only eight times in this game. Marino finished with 29 completions out of 50 attempts for 318 yards, throwing one touchdown pass and two interceptions. The Dolphins lost 38–16 in what was Marino’s only Super Bowl appearance.

Intellecual Ninja, You make some good points about Turner and the running game. And the fact that the Falcons are a pass first offense. But you don’t mention that there’s ebb and flow in a game. Also that maybe the other team can adjust to what you did the first halve. Plus you can’t be just one dementional, you must run the ball to keep the defense honest. Even if your run game is not having the success you’d like. I think these coaches know more about what their doing than you do. If the Falcons sit or play their starters against Tampa Bay, I support that dicision. Part of being a Falcon fan is believing they can beat anybody.

I don’t see anything wrong with playing McCown or DD against Tampa Bay. Let the guys get a few snaps in a regular game. As for the running game, use Antone Smith and Cox. We’ve also got back up players around the board who could take some of the heat off of our main guys. I really don’t care who plays against Tampa Bay as long as everybody’s healthy and ready to play and play hard when the playoffs start. This is a free week to rest and rehab players who need it the most. If the Falcons go out and play full throttle against Tampa Bay someone needs their head examined. GO FALCONS !

Agree with your strategy. No time to relax. Need to stay sharp. Starters need “practice” under game conditions. Mix in others as game progresses. I’d use Snelling as main ball carrier against Bucs. That way he will be better conditioned for playoffs to step in for Turner or Quizz if needed. Let McCown play a whole half so he will be a game ready backup if needed. Experiment with players to benefit team in playoffs.

Throw the ball to Bull Cox on the full back in the flat pass. It was open for a 4-5 yard gain a few times against the Lions.

Jeff, what happened to freedom of speech, or does that only apply to people that look like you? I see racists comments on your UGA articles all the time, especially after a loss. Guys calling black players hip hop thugs and things of that nature. So what if Choke is critical of Ryan. You didnt mind when bloggers would call Vick a dumb black QB. It sounds to me like you have a selective memory. Your behavior is very typical of the old south mentality.

Do you look like Jeff? No. Did he let you post? Yes.

MCR was not a contributor. He was a narrow-minded antagonizer who brought nothing of value to the blog. He also posted outright lies on the blog. He cared nothing about discussing the Falcons or the game. Just continued to blast Ryan and tout Vick and Flacco–over and over again for years. He’d already been banned from the other blogs, so Jeff has been more than reasonable in letting his crap go on for as long as it has–despite repeated calls by others on here to give him the boot.

Actually, Jeff didn’t ban him; he simply questioned the motivation for his mindless drivel and issued a warning. MCR then left in a huff–in effect, banning himself–much to the relief of most of the rest of us.

Don’t despair, though, Common Sense, if the Falcons go one and done again, I doubt MCR will be able to resist making a grand “Ha Ha” return to once again diss Ryan and all of us “losers” he loves to hate. On the other hand, if (as most of us hope) the Falcons go deep in the playoffs, he’ll likely remain under his rock.

You still on here trying to police the blog? I TOLD you Sunday that it was NOT unprovoked. Can you read?

You didn’t even know who MCR was, so you’re hardly one to jump in here and act like you have any knowledge at all of his distasteful background on this blog. As I mentioned earlier, Jeff gave him a lot of rope, and it was way past time to let him hang himself, which hopefully he’s finally done.

If everyone who name-called were banned, there would be no blog. MCR took hatred, bigotry, and dishonesty to a new level–repeatedly, for years–and, as a result, doesn’t deserve the privilege of posting here. Despite all that, Jeff hasn’t banned him (yet); only questioned his motivation and cautioned him.

You need to let this one lie.

I haven’t read the posts yet, but has anybody mentioned the 800 lb gorilla in the room, that is the Seattle Sea Hawks?

Their last three weeks have been more impressive than any I’ve seen all year. If russell Wilson and Co can light up the 49ers . . .

Maybe somebody else knocks them out . . .

dawg tired………….Johnson probably breaking 2000 receiving yards is hardly WASTING his talent. The Other WR’s were hurt and the Lion have no running game so Calvin is ALL the Lions have. They have used him a lot. Could they have used him more? Yes. His talent has been far from wasted by the team. Calvin could be wasting his Time & Talent in Detroit but he got a nice contract to hang around a few years before he asks for a trade.

I would be nice if the Falcons actually went to the Superbowl and won. I’m by no means a fan of that team, but they have gone this far with winning. They won 9 of those games by 3 points or less. Unfortunately people are creatures of habit. The Falcons will play on playoff game and that will be the end of it. They will lose in their own dome the very first game like they always have done. It’s so disappointing for their fans. This is the truth. If they were to actually play in the Superbowl this year it would be a miracle. I honestly don’t think they have a snow balls chance in hell to win one playoff game. This is the truth.

The previous three seasons that the Falcons made the playoffs they ran into teams that all were very hot going into the playoffs. All three went to the Super Bowl and only Arizona didn’t win it but they came very close and were arguably the worst of the three teams that beat Atlanta. Don’t look now but this seasons playoffs scenario is pointing toward Atlanta playing Seattle in the first round. Seattle will probably get the #5 seed (San Fran will beat Arizona and Seattle will beat the Rams in the final week). Seattle will play either Dallas or Wash in the first round and quite frankly they are better than both of those teams. Seattle is peaking and they have an X Factor QB, a strong defense and they play tough. They just dismantled three straight teams and hung 50 points on the first 2 and over 40 on San Fran. The bottom line is, Atlanta may be cursed with facing another Super Bowl Bound up and coming team a la Arizona, Green Bay, New York. Good Luck.

mgm..10:32……………..How do people know what is going to happen in a football game, before it happens?
The Seahawks “dismantled” the Cardinals and the Bills(a couple of teams already self-dismantled before the seahawks played them) and an injury depleted 49ers team(in the Hawks homegrounds).

SawThat1nce

If the Seahawks had home-field advantage, their playoff hopes would be greatly enhanced.
But, if you look at their record, they don’t do that good on-the-road.
5 away game Ls, the noise level in their stadium, is really a big factor in their success.
They did look pretty good Sunday night.
