Falcons understand that wins, No. 1 seed only set stage

Calvin Johnson is a special player but the Falcons may be a special team. (Detroit Free Press photo)

DETROIT – The schedule says there is a game left. The coach, Mike Smith, says, “We’ve said all along that if there’s games left to be played, we’re going to play them to win.” (And in his head, he probably adds: “Even if we play them with Luke McCown.”)

But this is the reality: Nobody is thinking about Game 16 against Tampa Bay. It’s about what happens in three weeks and that’s where everybody’s thoughts are. There’s no pressure to win the regular season finale next Sunday, no requirement to play in the first round of the playoffs, no pressure to jazz up the resume.

“We’ve done everything we can,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said late Saturday night following his team’s 31-18 win over Detroit, which secured a bye and the NFC’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs. “Now we just have to go do it.” In the playoffs, he means.

Imagine being outfitted with the best ski equipment and taking four months of lessons, then one day being dropped at the top of a mountain and being told, “Try to get to the bottom without wiping out.”

That’s where the Falcons are today.

They’re 13-2. They can walk to the finish line of the regular season. Two weeks ago, they wowed skeptics and believers with a 34-0 win over New York. In Detroit, rather than suffer from the kind of emotional blahs that have plagued them, they jumped out to a 21-3 lead, endured some bumps in the third quarter (as Calvin Johnson took a wrecking ball to the NFL record book) and then pulled away in the fourth.

Blank is right. The Falcons have done all they can do. Now, it’s just a matter of validating their record.

They won’t know their opponent for two weeks. But after quick exits in 2008 (Arizona), 2010 (Green Bay) and 2011 (New York), their focus is, and should be, more on themselves. The words, “It’s not about them, it’s about us,” might as well be stamped on their foreheads.

“Going into the Giants game, we knew a lot of questions were going to be answered,” Tony Gonzalez said. “I think that day we realized how good we can be. Maybe we even surprised ourselves a little. But that helped us. The focus that we had that week of practice was the same focus we had in preparation for (Detroit). And yes, we’ve been here before. We’ve had a top seed. We’ve had a bye. It doesn’t mean anything. But this time we’ll come out focused and ready to roll.”

Safety Thomas DeCoud viewed the Lions game as another test passed. “We proved we can carry over from a really big win. We had a lights-out game against New Orleans but then just went through the motions against Carolina. It’s nice to know we can get this out of our system.”

There were some concerns before this game. Linebacker Mike Peterson, one of the team’s emotional leaders, walked into the locker room following warmups and sensed it was too quiet. So he banged two cymbals together, figuratively speaking.

“He riled us up,” Roddy White said.

Peterson smiled when asked about his pregame antics. He was the one who marched the team out of the tunnel and right through the Lions’ quasi-blockade for warmups in Detroit last season.

“They wanted to be relaxed,” he said. “When you’ve had success one game, the natural thing is to feel like you’ve made it. So I was just trying to keep the guys up, let them know what’s at stake.”

The Falcons started fast. Matt Ryan attacked early and often, completing his first 12 attempts and 15 of 16. He threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns. In the last two games, he is 48 for 60 passing (including 22 straight completions) for 549 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions. The MVP candidacy just circled back.

Detroit’s defense focused on stopping Gonzalez (one catch). So White and Julio Jones (15 catches, 224 yards, three touchdowns combined) destroyed them.

Defensively, the Falcons gave up a ton of yards (522). Matthew Stafford threw for 443, more than half of that to Johnson (11 for 225). But the Lions reached the end zone only once, going one for four in the red zone. That’s why they’re 4-11. That’s why the Falcons are 13-2.

Said Ryan, “When you have a combination of guys who are committed to doing everything the right way, you have fun doing it.”

This much we know: The backdrop is impressive.

I hope that Coach Smith will treat the Tampa Bay game just like a third pre-season game. Dominant first half performance by starters (not including Turner), followed by one series each in the second half then begin substitutions. Too much off time has a history of poor results for this team and as of late, in this league. My opinion is that if you continue to push yourself as a team, you will continue to achieve the desired results as a team.

________________________________
Who lets you get away with this B.S. of yours in here, JSS ?

The San Francisco 49ers in 1989 Lost in the Play-Offs at Home ?

That’s a lie. They won every game at home in the Play-Offs, which is a feat we’d like to Duplicate, having the same advantage the 49ers did in 1989 of

“The Falcons still scare no balanced NFL playoff roster, Dome or not…”
__________________________________________________________

Seriously, JSS ?

The Falcons scare no one in the play-offs with Home Field Advantage throughout the play-offs to reach the Super Bowl Game ?

That’s pure B.S., and you know it.

JSS December 23rd, 2012 11:27 am Fan since 66 asked JSS why do you post here ?

“You asked “why?” I answered: “It’s professional football.” The blogs of other teams have no problem with dissenting voices, Only AJC Falcons bloggers and Cowboys fans have a problem…”
________________________________________

There is no one who has a problem with dissenting voices. We’ve asked you direct questions about the made-up statistics about previous 1989 season San Francisco 49ers losing at home in the play-offs with the Home Field Advantage in the Play-Offs. You just duck, run and hide, JSS.

We’ve read you make-up B.S. that yesterday’s game was not a great game by Matt Ryan and that Matt Ryan is not the MVP of the 2012 season for the NFL. Sure he is. He has had a great season 2012.

You just don’t want to admit it.

So, you run in here and say rather than comparing his 2012 season with everyone else in the NFL this season and what they meant to their teams 2012, that we have to instead compare Matt Ryan 2012 with what Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees did in 2010 and compare Matt Ryan’s season 2012 with what Tom Brady did in 2007.

Michael Vick and Joe Flacco, we cannot address those TROLLS either attempting to put down Matt Ryan’s NFL MVP 2012 Season, comparing Matt Ryan to them.

So, we put up their season to Matt Ryan’s season and they look horrible compared to what Matt Ryan’s NFL MVP 2012 Season looks like.

You don’t like that.

JSS, you say you never were a Falcons fan, have a better education than we do, and say you have enjoyed rooting on your 1-AA FCS football team for your alma mater, Eastern Michigan, the # 80 US News and World Report REGIONAL college. But, that you don’t root for college football teams ?

And, you say now that you’re in here because fans of no other team have a problem with dissenting voices, but that only the Falcons’ fans on the AJ-C have a problem with dissenting voices ? Yet, when we ask you direct questions, our reply to whatever your responses are, are always the same :

Your summary of yesterday’s game is that Matt Ryan is not even the best QB Rating of his own conference this season.

I think Matt Ryan has played well this 2012 season.

I think Matt Ryan has meant more to his team’s success than any player on any team 2012.

You call that fantasy football.

You tell us every one of us sucks.

You tell us the Falcons suck.

You tell us you will NEVER be a fan of the Falcons as long as Arthur Blank owns the team.

Good Heavens, son.

That is not a dissenting voice. That is a little snot hiding behind his keyboard acting as if his doesn’t stink to high freaking heaven, grasping at straws and not summarizing the game the rest of the nation watched all day yesterday in a manner consistent with anything close to reality.

So, you attack ALL SOUTHERNERS with Neil Young helping Southern Farmers with your DETROIT hell hole education from a hell hole 4th tier regional college – a NOT a good one at that.

But, you don’t have to shove down our throats to the unsuspecting masses that your URL Link will take us to a song title like that. I don’t want to hear it. It is a

Yes. I did not follow that made-up position of JSS either, Answer This, that none of the 2012 play-off teams fear the Falcons. Yours is a good reply to that; he’ll not address it. He’ll duck the point, and write something no one understands. Then, he will correct his own post, and still no one will know what in the hell he just said. Again.

And, for the record, I firmly believe that all the 2012 play-off teams, fear this Falcons’ Football Team because of what Matt Ryan can do to them. I believe if you ask every NFL Football Team’s players who in 2012 they fear facing the most, that the answer would be unanimous that it’s Matt Ryan 2012, they all fear the most.

JSS Marino played in the Super Bowl. It was his First year as the Full Season Starter but his second season playing. he was quoted as saying “I was young and I didn’t know it was so hard to get to the Super Bowl. I never made it back but I never even imagined I wouldn’t play in another Super Bowl.”

After starting the season as a backup to incumbent starter David Woodley, Marino was given his first NFL start in Week 6 versus the Buffalo Bills. Marino and Miami lost that game 38–35 in overtime. As a rookie, Marino set several records: he posted a 96.0 passer rating, he was selected to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, he had the lowest percentage of passes intercepted with 2.03, he was the only rookie quarterback to lead a conference in passing, and he had the highest passing completion percentage with 58.45

In the following year, the Dolphins finished with a 14–2 regular season record, clinching home-field advantage for the playoffs. In the first round, the Dolphins avenged their playoff loss of the previous season to Seattle Seahawks 31–10, and they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game 45–28.
In Super Bowl XIX, Marino and the Dolphins faced off against San Francisco 49ers and Joe Montana in Palo Alto, California. The Dolphins, who had 74 rushing attempts in the previous two weeks, ran the ball only eight times in this game. Marino finished with 29 completions out of 50 attempts for 318 yards, throwing one touchdown pass and two interceptions. The Dolphins lost 38–16 in what was Marino’s only Super Bowl appearance.
