If last week’s Falcons were for real, we’re about to find out

If Julio Jones, Matt Ryan can Falcons can avoid letdown at Detroit, they'll really have something to celebrate. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

If Julio Jones, Matt Ryan and Falcons can avoid letdown at Detroit, they'll really have something to celebrate. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

(Online readers: I’m taking the risk of posting this before 11:59.59 p.m. Friday on the assumption the world will still be here at 12:00.01 a.m. Saturday.)

DETROIT — Imagine if the world actually ended on Friday after everybody had finally started to buy into the Falcons?

Alas, life goes on. The Mayans are left to seek a refund from their director of world predictions, Danny Sheridan. The rest of us now watch and see how the Falcons react to acceptance.

That was no small victory last week when the Falcons doubled-over the New York Giants 34-0. If they couldn’t quite make up for last season’s 24-2 playoff loss at New York, they at least finally gave a glimpse of their ceiling. Their quarterback, Matt Ryan, came up big in a big moment. Their offensive line neutralized one of the best front fours in the NFL. Their defense, even without safety William Moore, one of its most important players, and a banged up Asante Samuel and Jonathan Babineaux, handed the Giants their first shutout in 16 years.

But it is equally important how they respond to that victory.

The Detroit Lions are not nearly as bad as a 4-10 record or a six-game losing streak would suggest. They have a dangerous passing connection with local appeal (Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson) and talent on both sides of the ball, even if the locker room is a dysfunctional mess and Ndamukong Suh, for all of his skill, seems to have a cranium full of nougat. But this is a game the Falcons should win, especially knowing that a victory (or a tie) would clinch at least a first-round bye in the playoffs.

Great teams don’t just respond well to adversity. They respond when everybody is telling them how great they are.

“This is not the time to go cool,” tight end Tony Gonzalez said. “It’s not the time to think you’ve arrived. Actually, it’s the worst time to have that attitude. You’ve got to make sure we go to the playoffs and keep that same kind of momentum. Maybe we learned that against Carolina. Maybe that loss was something good for us.”

“I think we learned our lesson from the Carolina game,” running back Michael Turner said. “We are not taking anything for granted. We’ve still got work to do. We’ve still got things to get better at. They are going to give us their best shot. We know that.”

Anybody guaranteeing another first-round exit for the Falcons had their eyes closed last week.

Anybody guaranteeing a Super Bowl had their eyes closed in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Both qualify as silly drivel.

Bottom line: We still don’t know what to expect. We saw both ends of the spectrum in consecutive weeks: falling behind 23-0 and losing to a 3-9 Carolina team, then blowing out the defending Super Bowl champions.

Do you really want to take a strong position one way or the other?

But the Detroit game will tell us something. This is the time of the season when title contenders come together. The carrot of a victory securing a first-round bye — and therefore a week for the Falcons to rest some regulars in the final game against Tampa Bay — should provide all the motivation they need.

Gonzalez again: “I’m anxious to see how we respond after last week. … You can’t dwell on what you’ve done in the past. We set the standard of what we can do against a really good football team. We have to make sure we duplicate that week in and week out. Our focus going into that game was the best it’s been all year. We have to have that type of effort the rest of the season. That’s what good teams do in December.”

And so far, the Falcons are 1-1.

The disclaimer at the beginning, “head full of nougat,” line… very funny. Had plans to run the REM thing on FB but a few had already jumped on it.

I agree with you JS. We need to have a sense of urgency. Take care of business and then struggle next week with the best route to take as far as resting players. That is what a great team would do.

It’s funny to say this, but this game is a must win for the Falcons. Having the #1 seed is critical to their playoff success and having the starters rest and be well prepared is way more important than having them have to play against Tampa Bay. Wouldn’t it be nice to see what our backup QB and other players down the depth chart can do?

Skip Bayless just said “It’ll come down to two teams in the NFC: San Fran and Green Bay.” Totally discounting the Falcons, but I understand why. We are going to shock a lot of people. It’s almost like that 34-0 win over the Giants meant nothing, and in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t…but you can’t pay me to believe that had the 49ers or Packers beat the Giants 34-0, they’d be the talk of the town. The 49ers (supposedly the best in the NFC), gave up a 31-3 lead and almost lost the game but they are invincible. Had the Falcons been up 31-3 on the Patriots and still won, they would have made all sorts of excuses as to why the Patriots “gave it away”. Sheesh. The media sucks.

Yep, we’re about to find out if we’re contenders, or pretenders!!! We need these last two wins to keep the momentum going, into the Playoffs.
And I’m not a proponent of resting players in the last game or two….they need to continue to “hone their skills”, right up until the big “tournament” starts! I mean, we all saw how our team responded to Carolina, after having 4 days off, and 9 days between games…..I’d say, not too well…

I think the biggest difference is Asante Samuel. Not at all surprised he picked of Eli in that game. If anyone knows the NFC east its Samuel. He always plays with a chip on his shoulder, and I think he hears the criticism of the team and uses it to get the team, in particular the Defense fired up. Lets not forget he has more playoff success than any other player on this team with rings to validate that success. I dont pay attention to the media when it comes to the Falcons, because in the end every question about this team will be answered in just a few short weeks. We have put ourselves in position to only have to win two games to get to the dance. I think we can do it, i think the approach going into the playoffs this year will be different. There will be a sense of urgency, and that is how i expect this team to play. Go Falcons!!!

There is one other thing to be mindful of for the Falcons should they end up winning home field. That would be the extra week “off”. Sure, it would be great to be able to get healthy and focus of preparation for whomever may come to the Georgia Dome, but history says that long layoffs aren’t good for this team. Just look at what happened in the playoffs 2 years ago against the Packers. Look at what the extra rest after a short week did for the Falcons against Carolina. And there are other examples where I believe this has been the case, though I can’t recall anything definitively at the moment.

Mike Smith is a “players’ coach” and he is a very good coach (easily the best winning percentage-wise that Atlanta’s ever seen). He connects with his players despite a low-key, “avoid the tabloids” approach that keeps any issues within the clubhouse. The result of this is that generally speaking, nobody in the organization gets too high or too low. That formula MAY work during the regular season, but the playoffs are no place for it (Case in point: the Atlanta Braves). You must be at full intensity and have a fire in your belly come playoff time, period, because everyone in the mix with you has it.

But the last (at least 2 times, if I recall correctly) that Smith has given his players days off during an extra week, they’ve lost intensity and come out flat during the game that followed. If you get to speak with him before then, Mr. Schultz, could you please remind him of this? Not that I don’t think he’s also well aware of it, but it might bear repeating with the playoffs looming.

__________________________

I don’t think it’s unexplained at all. In 46 years, the team has ZERO championships–and in fact has only sniffed a title once, losing to Denver 34-19 in the SB following the 1998 season. As recently as two years ago, the Falcons won 13 games, then took a 4-TD beatdown in their first postseason game at the hands of a 6-loss Packer bunch. With that kind of history, I don’t see how you can legitimately blame the media for its skepticism.

Go DEEP into the playoffs; the respect will come. Win it all, and that respect will be accompanied by accolades.

The NFL is much harder to predict these days. Every year some team comes out of the woodwork that no one expected to do well and some so called power house falls flat on their face. I find myself skipping the pre-game shows and just watching the game.

“We end regular season with highest ranked 11-2 team, # 6 in the nation (# 5 Coaches’), and watch as Seth Emerson ranks Ohio State # 3, from which they cannot possibly be ranked higher than the winner of the NC Title Game, as it should be for a program on its 6 NCAA Probation for improper benefits that the NCAA found went all the way back to 2002 – Maurice Clarett tainted national championship.

We play in a bowl game against Nebraska, who up and quit the Big XII and is ranked # 23 AP # 21 Coaches’ in the CapitalOne Bowl Game. When we win, if Vanderbilt can with their 2nd consecutive bowl bid, we can knock Nebraska out of the top 25 and put Vanderbilt into the Top 25, as Vanderbilt is ranked # 27 in AP and # 27 in Coaches’.

In the end, for all the poor sports for Alabama such as 01HAWK, Blackland and others, as Mark Richt summarized : We were knocked off the ball by Alabama’s OL and despite our 21-10 lead after our player of the game Alec Ogletree scored the TD, could not tackle their running backs, whoever they sent out. They kept our defense on the field, and the penalties did hurt.

After that, Alabama had runs of 31, 10 (TD), 32, 15,14, 1 (TD), 10, 11, 7, 3, 5, (Bomb 45-yard TD), and despite Aaron Murray playing well enough to win the game, it was this string of running plays given up with the 21-10 lead that lost the game. Nothing else.

We start 2013 with large numbers of recruits 30 so far and as many as 19 might come in early, opening up a few late openings for lots of top recruits to come join us. We had a fun year. We will have 11 drafted in the NFL draft after this season, all of whom have started for us. Alec Ogletree with 2 tackles in the bowl game goes over 100 tackles for the season, and obviously some team is getting a whale of a football player.

Alec Ogletree could not beat Alabama by himself.

He tried.

It took a team effort and our defense, well, we end the season # 79 in the nation in rushing defense after 13 games. That’s pitiful.

I would have preferred a bowl game against a team who throws the football and cannot run it.

They matched us up with the complete opposite.

We have a month to try to figure out how to have someone not named Alec Ogletree tackle a running back.

They also matched us up against Nebraska because they are # 1 in the nation in Pass Defense.

Aaron Murray will fix that.

I do not see a top team who Nebraska beat, and their loss to 5-Loss Wisconsin in the last game yesterday, is a BAD LOSS.

And, Nebraska did not just lose to 5-Loss Wisconsin, they lost 70-31 yesterday.

And, so where we are 12-2 after we beat Nebraska, is exactly where I said we would be after this 2012 best shot I said we’d have. In fact, we beat the teams exactly I said we would beat. And, we lost to the teams exactly whom I said we would lose to South Carolina and Alabama. I did, however, say that Florida win for us would be over a poor lousy Florida team. The fact that Florida did put together a great season and is ranked ahead of us today, makes this and that win Mark Richt’s best to-date.

I still want to keep Mark Richt. I still love his recruiting. He will take-over the lead starting 2001 when he started here with NFL Drafted Bulldogs 2001-2013 after we dispatch pretender conference Big 10 Nebraska with the 11 players drafted by The League, but they are going into the NFL knowing they cannot tackle on running plays – except for Alec Ogletree, who will play in the secondary in the NFL and whom Erk Russell would have had playing Rover – turning over in his grave as he is at us ending the 13-game season before the bowl game # 79 in the country rush defense.

# 79 nation Rushing Defense UGA

We can square the record with Nebraska, a Sun Bowl loss in 1969. Andy Landers’ 5 freshmen performed well and made some baskets to win by double-digits over Georgie tek on TV today to take that record to move Andy Landers’ record vs Georgie tek to 28-3 all-time, much like what Mark Richt is doing to them in football now at 11-1 – both over 90 % UGA wins over Georgie tek.

Vandie plays to play into The Top 25 in Music City New Year’s Eve against NC State, a 7-5 squad who beat FSU along with Florida. Georgie tek 6-7 looks to lose their 8th bowl game in a row at 2pm 12/31/2012 playing in the Sun Bowl against 7-5 Southern California – I presume that is what USC means listed beside them.

LSU has Clempsum Farmers later 12-31 which will be a blow-out. Beat no one Missy State has Northwestern. The New Year’s Games start out with South Carolina playing to knock Michigan out of the top 25 a final time 2012-2013 season. Louisville dispatched to the Sugar Bowl as fodder for Florida. Ole Miss plays Pittsburgh. Best of luck Alabama in a blow-out over Notre Shame with Notre Shame’s losing all-time bowl record, against 1 of the best we were that close against.

Spike had nothing to do with who won the game.

We lost the game because all season long we could not stop the run, ending # 79 in the nation before the bowl game in rush defense, and worse than that after the bowl game.

Aaron Murray played well enough to win the game, and to be the difference in the game – our way.

But instead, after 13 games, we’re # 79 NCAA Rush Defense.”

Mike had a bad season. Very bad. We all know that. But according to Pamela, A/K/A Matt “CHOKE” Ryan, it wasn’t his fault. Just as the Giants obviously had other things on their minds besides football as they were getting spanked by the Falcons, Mike had other things on his mind besides football this season. Michael Vick’s career is over. $ 100 million in debt. 8 issues off-the-field. Felony conviction, plead guilty.# 25 QB in a 32-team league. Fewer TD Passes in 11 years than Matt Ryan in less than half the time. Over 10 points less QB Rating for his career than Matt Ryan. More Pass Attempts and fewer receptions than Matt Ryan. More Play-Off Losses than Matt Ryan.

Interesting today, December 21, 2012, that you consider Michael Vick the better quarterback than Matt Ryan, when Michael Vick is unemployed # 25 QB whose teams were 83-81 back when he was a QB, with more play-off losses than Matt Ryan, fewer TD Passes in more than twice the time, and a 10 point less QB rating.

Thomas Brown

Michael Vick has never made it through a full NFL schedule and played in all regular season games. He has been very prone to injury as a result of his playing style, especially when he flushes outside the pocket and scrambles downfield. He has suffered, and been prone to, several concussions the last few seasons, and nagging injuries continue to force him to miss time. And at age 32 with his injury history, it’s uncertain as to how much more abuse Micheal Vick can take as a quarterback and it certainly appears that Michael Vick’s career is over.

Michael Vick stands at an undersized 6′0, a very short height for a quarterback. Few quarterbacks can succeed at such a small height, and forcing Michael Vick to stay in the pocket and forcing him to see over linemen that tower at least three inches over him is a liability that could force Vick to throw unecessary interceptions and flush out of the pocket too early.

More importantly, as we saw this season from Michael Vick, he can be a big turnover machine, as his penchant for turnovers has risen noticeably the last two seasons.

Matt Choke says Michael Vick is better than Matt Ryan and states that Michael Vick has 5 play-off wins. If he did, he would not be unemployed. He doesn’t, and he is.

Love how the media keeps changing who the best team in the NFC is. First it was San Fran, then it went to Green Bay, then on to NY Giants, now it’s back to San Fran. Well let’s just say that if San Fran looses this weekend, which they have a great shot at, up in seattle. Then it will be back to Green Bay. I love it. No one ever wants to talk about us at all. Well dimwit, let’s see the breakdown
“One target” equals Calvin Johnson.
“OB about to have have the most pass attempts in NFL history” equals Matthew Stafford (who already has 629 pass attempts with two games to play). The record is 691. You do understand that Stafford had 5 games exceeding 48 pass attempts this season?
And lastly, this same QB who has regularly passed the ball over 50 times in a game, how is expected not to turnover the ball (like he has at level of 3 interceptions in two of his 48+ attempts games) with one passing target and no running game?
Poor Thomas Brown, words wasted on the myopic individual…

Choke,

At the end of the day, both Ryan and Vick are 0-0 in the Super Bowl. That’s the real statistic. Getting to NFC title games doesn’t matter — just ask Donnovan McNabb (who finally broke through, but it took quite a while).

The biggest difference in Vick and Ryan right now is that Ryan has a chance to put a win in the Super Bowl column this year, and Michael Vick does not. Whether it’s his fault or the Eagles’ fault, this is the truth.

FACT: In spite of all this, Pamela (CHOKE) can only harp on ONE of their TWO losses, to an underrated divisional opponent, and PAST season playoff losses. Her heart is filled with HATRED for this team, city and QB, simply because Mike is no longer here.

CHOKE: Mr. Blank that pick 6 was not my fault. The defender jumped in front of my pass. He wasn’t supposed to be there.

BLANK: Listen up you little loser, I’m tired of going to the owners meeting and hearing all my colleagues bragging about winning in the playoffs and they are freakin laughing at me and all those 1 and dones.

I have no idea how you figured that out that she was talking about Joe Flacco but Flacco does have 5 play-off wins, and is set to make $ 16 million a season for the next 2 seasons at least for certain. Flacco did sign previously a contract at $ 6.7 million in the 5th year of his previous 5- year contract, but that is going to way up based upon the money paid former Falcon back-up Matt Schaub at 4-year only at $ 62 million.

She was trying to compare the old contract on Joe Flacco, then, to the existing 6-year $ 66 million dollar contract for Matt Ryan, instead of what Joe Flacco will be paid in 2013 ? Matt Ryan makes $ 10 million in 2013, and does not become an unrestricted free agent until 2014.

Joe Flacco is an unrestricted free agent now, after his play-off appearance at 9-5 today.

Joe Flacco’s offense is # 21 in the NFL, so the play-off appearance should be short, evidenced by Baltimore Ravens losing EVERY game all month long, all 3 to-date facing a red-mad New York Giants team in 2 days’ time, now. Joe Flacco was 9-2, with play-off berth already won, and then lost the last 3 weeks’ games in a row. With 5 December games, Joe Flacco easily could lose 5 games this month, right ? Cincinnati is no gimme win for Joe Flacco.

# 5 QB in the NFL, Joe Flacco is certainly a better comparison than # 25 QB in the NFL Michael Vick, who is all I have seen her talking about on here on every blog. If she is going to flip-flop back and forth to compare # 25 QB Michael Vick with Top Ten QB Matt Ryan.

I’ll bet you Matt Ryan makes MORE money than Joe Flacco after Joe Flacco signs his contract after 3 more games, when we sign Matt Ryan at the end of the year next year.

Choke Ryan,

Look, if you’re going to go find quarterbacks based upon what you want to look up that day, to say that Matt Ryan is not the best quarterback in the NFL, best you stick to NOT Michael Vick.

Joe Flacco with the # 21 offense is better than Matt Ryan ? Matt Ryan is hot; Joe Flacco is not. I am certain that the money the 2 get will put Matt Ryan ahead of Joe Flacco, as our offense is a Top Ten Offense and Joe Flacco’s offense sucks at # 21. Both are in the play-offs. Maybe we can play them and see.

Last week against the giants I predicted the falcons margin of victory would be 56. They won by 34 points and I thought they would score 3 more TDs than they did. Well this week the falcons play the high scoring lions and the great irrepressible matthew stafford. The Lions also boast the greatest wide receiver the game has ever seen Calvin Johnson (megatron) who is on pace to break Jerry Rices single season yards record. The Lions high-octane offense will probably score at least 35 points on saturday, while the Falcons should score at least 50 points, easily winning the game by two touchdowns. If everything goes well the Falcons should seize the home field advantage thoughout the playoffs after they win saturdays game. I HOPE THE FALCONS DONT WASTE THEIR POSITION IN THE STANDINGS–TIED FOR THE BEST RECORD IN THE LEAGUE. In addition, if the falcons dont win the superbowl this year, I would fire mike smith, cut matt ryan and welcome back mike vick to replace ryan as our starting quarterback, sweeping the front office clean.

___________________

The way I figured it out is simply that he’s (or “she’s”) always on Jeff’s Falcons blogs (he’s banned from the others) spouting the same lies over and over about Ryan, Vick, the Falcons, and Flacco. There are some notable exceptions to the “same” lies, such as (1) his post earlier in the season in which he claimed Vick had led the Eagles to a last-minute comeback win over the Steelers, and (2)within the past week, as he repeatedly insisted that Carolina was 2-9 when they beat the Falcons–then quietly (hoping no one would notice) changed it to 3-9 after I questioned multiple times why he was lying about the Panthers’ record. He touts Vick incessantly, and when Vick is down and/or out, he resorts to Flacco, who was drafted the same year as Ryan.

He seldom responds directly to questions, particularly when they’re legitimate and would require that he present unbiased facts. As I mentioned earlier, the bottom line with him is that he STILL favors Vick over either Ryan or Flacco, which tells you all you need to know about him.

Jeff’s liberal blog policies, including no profanity (even abbreviated, as I learned this week), are refreshing, but represent a two-edged sword. On the upside, you seldom encounter the “filter” issues that are so frustrating on other blogs. On the downside, you have to scroll past scum like MCR and his type.

This is because in 46 years, the Falcons have ZERO championships and a well-document record of postseason failure.

Hopefully, they turn that perception around this season, and like you said, it starts Saturday at Detroit. And like TG said, this is no time to let up.

The team needs to preserve the momentum it established with the stunning slapdown of the Giants by handling Detroit and TB, thereby entering the playoffs on a 3-game winning streak.

I spent the better part of the college football season doing battle with TB on Jeff’s UGA blogs. In the spirit of the holiday season–and because lately he’s been focused on others (you, MCR, Honey Boy, Buckeye, et al)–I’ve decided to watch his fray(s) from the sidelines and focus more on the Jeff’s Falcons blogs. Of course, that means repeated collisions with MCR, who posts, shall we say, a bit more concisely than TB–likely due to his (MCR’s) severely limited mental capacities. Said limitations in turn make blog battles less time-intensive.

I would point out also that “MCDTD” is doing an admirable job of diminishing MCR’s already-miniscule credibility. By the way, has MCR bothered to answer your question yet? Didn’t think so; he has trouble responding to direct inquiries.

Recruiting impacts NFL Draft Selections, Team Performance, Federal Graduation Rates, Attendance, Rankings in the Polls, and Recruiting explains the lack of Performance Mobility among the 120 FBS Division 1-A football programs.

NFL 53-man rosters are more than 90 % made-up of these collegiate football Recruited Student-Athletes. For their college education everyone is so Proud of, they are provided a Full Ride. A Full Scholarship, which in recent years has begun to take-on proposed NCAA Rules changes to include additional stipends for the Student-Athletes.

59 % of all high school football and basketball players think they will go on to play in college on a Collegiate Scholarship.

A College Degree is valued, according to all studies of it, well over one million dollars, over the lifetime of the future employee. Successful college graduates learn not only their specific chosen field of study, but even more importantly, learn to bond with others who will be successful in life with them comradely; and, they learn how to study. In today’s high-technology world, this is paramount. A football player can only play the game about 10 years, if they are successful. Only a select few go on to play the game until they are long in the tooth, and their actual ability to perform athletically is actually higher when they are younger. They learn how to play the game better, adapting to their lesser athletic ability, with more knowledge of the game. Their ability to perform actually athletically is higher when they are in their prime athletically.

NFL players just get paid more when they are older based upon their previous performance.

And, then they are out of the game because they are no longer able to perform athletically, no matter how much they have learned their positions.

This is when their college degree kicks in for the next 50 years’ of their lives.

It has been said that the NCAA Student-Athlete is raped for their athletic ability, but as a Student-Athlete who performed in the classroom and on the field, I can attest to the value of a college degree. I have been offered many opportunities in life both on this continent and abroad based upon the degree. Doors are opened to us, simply because we know others, who also are graduates of our alma mater. My current position, since 1991, has compensated me $ 3 million; and the job offer was only because I was a college graduate, as a prerequisite to the offer.

Athletes are known for where they attended college.

They are given huge Press Followings in College, and are on TV and Radio, and in newsprint and Internet articles, and now blogs that used to be called forums. It builds their value which they simply cash-in on in the NFL. Without this feeder system, what would the NFL fan do ?

Talk to high school football and basketball athletes, 59 % of whom think they are getting a college scholarship ?

98 of 100 high school athletes never go on to even play their sport in college. That’s college, not the NFL.

Less than 1 of 100 high school athletes even get a Scholarship of any kind to a Division 1 school.

Of 100 ninth-graders, 68 will graduate from high school, and only 18 will graduate from college according to the U.S. Department of Education.

1 of 16,000 high school athletes attains a professional sports’ career.

According to the NCAA, 5.8 percent of all high school football players play the game in college, and of those only 2 percent of college football players go to the Fame and Fortune of the NFL.

.09

.09 of high school football players go to the NFL.

Have a back-up plan so that some grown man can fawn all over you as an NFL football player, for it is only they who do play in the NFL, whom this grown man can kowtow you – that being your goal is life as a football player to have some grown man obsequiously submissively live his life through you, creepy as that is for a grown man. I personally am not of that persuasion; but I see no reason why a grown man cannot do what he wants to do with his life, whatever a grown man’s obsession is with other grown men. More power to him, if that is what he wants from life. Again, it’s not for me; but he is welcome to do as he prefers.

Where the water hits the wheel is this transition from high school football player to college football player. You’re away from home for the 1st time, out in the real world where you have to fend for yourself given all these choices in life; and, instead of one of 68 percent with high school diploma, you are attempting to become 1 of only 18 percent with a college degree.

Let’s face it, the college degree is significantly enhanced in its value, if the college has a successful FBS Division 1-A football program. There are only 85 scholarships available from each of the 120 of these colleges. Only the Top 25 of those, or so, are considered the Most Valuable, and you contribute to that value, which you will cash-in on for the next 50 years. Every year for the next 50 years, you will cash-in on what you contribute to.

Camaraderie. I wear my ring every single solitary day. The others in the companies who I come in contact with daily, recognize me as a person who is in this club. Our fellowship amongst us, is an alliance association of our organizational group. We seek out each other and support each other.

Rodney Garner has been here 15 seasons, and was the 1st hire by Mark Richt, retaining only him from Jim Donnan’s staff. A college football graduate from his alma mater, where he excelled as a student and as a football player, and since, in his chosen profession – although he has rubbed more than a few the wrong way with this treatment of his Defensive Linemen in the Press with what he refers to as his Tough Love.

There are those who would point-out the truth that the State of Georgia has long-since provided the 4th most NFL players behind only California, Florida, and Texas, and Georgia produces 1 per half a million Georgians which is 2nd nationally per capita.

Rodney Garner has recruited the average # 7 recruiting ranking class. His class will be

Rodney Garner says : “It is the right time,” because he has largely been replaced in recruiting here, anyway; and, because his Position Coaching is being judged HARSHLY with all these NFL Draft Picks after the Nebraska game yet he has personally been wholly unable to teach any of them how to tackle a running back all season long. # 79 in the nation in defending the run, Rodney Garner’s recruits for his own position, have not tackled on running plays all season long.

OUT-RUSHED for the season.
_________________________

There aren’t teams in The Top 25 who find themselves in this egregious position of being out-rushed for the season. Some of this is attributable to the nature of the game strategies where we attempt to throw the football on every set of downs to begin the game, when the running game would be wearing down our opponents, as they’ve done against us all season long.

Rodney Garner’s defensive linemen have neither sacked the opposing quarterbacks, nor have they tackled on running plays. Rodney Garner has us playing Nebraska with 54 scholarship recruits he recruited here, of the 85-scholarship limit. 2 are injured and he has a transfer-in. 57 is still 28 under the NCAA 85-scholarship limit.

Job Responsibilities :

(1) Recruit
(2) Train DL to stop the run
(3) Train DL to sack opposing quarterbacks

Rodney Garner has other responsibilities. These are just the Most Important Top 3 job responsibilities, and in our best-chance 2012 season, he has FAILED MISERABLY in all 3.

42.

That’s HALF of what we’re allowed.

LESS THAN HALF.

42 of 85.

For his job as Recruiting Coordinator for 2012, he gets an F.

What’s he left us with ? The 2013 recruiting class, large on numbers, as explained here now, and at the EXPENSE of our average recruit which is 20 percent worse than it has EVER BEEN.

He has little to work with on Defense 2013, and has a big job teaching them to sack opposing quarterbacks and stop the run, when with all these NFL Draft Picks after the last game coming up, he taught them NOTHING about, EITHER.

# 4 state producing NFL players
# 7 average recruiting ranking

Scout.com and Rivals are the 2 foremost authorities on college football recruiting, and if you average Scout.com and Rivals rankings 2001 through now, Rodney Garner has averaged the # 7 average recruiting ranking for Mark Richt in the Mark Richt era.

He brought us the same numbers for Jim Donnan, too.

He raided this state when Jim Donnan hired him away from the Tennessee vols’ football program where he taught Tight Ends and did recruiting. He was neither a Tight End nor a Defensive Linemen at Auburn as a player.

Rodney Garner was All-SEC at Auburn as an Offensive Linemen.

As for the

_____________________________________________
OFF-FIELD ISSUES of his recruits 2001 through today
_____________________________________________

Rodney Garner is judged POORLY for those whom he first recruited here, and then second taught them NOTHING about discipline on or off the field.

NFL Players ?

JSS, fawn all over them, for God’s sake you creepy sucker for it.

But he recruited in a hotbed of state talent for the state university, and frankly garnered only a portion of the talent, and not always at the positions of need for this football program, and yes sent large numbers to the NFL for creepy JSS to fawn all over the grown men, 71 of those whom JSS obsesses over Rodney Garner recruited here who were selected in the NFL Drafts just since Mark Richt retained him.

For this, Rodney Garner has my Appreciation because in my hobby, having 71 of that ability, soon to be 82 NFL Draft Selections in the Mark Richt era alone, I have been blessed with

Great Football Players to watch as I root-on my alma mater to further the rep and street cred for me in my profession and to make my hobby fun : Collegiate Football – where the Water Hits the Wheel in the Sport of Football, a game I played as Defensive Back.

Defensive Backs play run support and part of Rodney Garner’s job here was to explain that to the Defensive Backs, how what his DL was doing on pass and on running plays is to enhance their ability to support the run and to stop the pass. He fell short of that, too, in explaining to the secondary how what he was teaching the DL to do, required the secondary to support the stopping of the run game of our opponents.

Right Time.

Rodney Garner will be judged for this season, including the game 10 days from now, and Rodney Garner will have allowed our opponents this 2012 season at UGA University of Ground Attack to be

OUT-RUSHED 2012 SEASON.

Out best-chance and he fell down on EVERY RESPONSIBILITY for his job.

Auburn, joke a football program. Joke the street cred and rep of Auburn in the classrooms and on the football field, today.

1 Fan who for his hobby, meddled in the football program to the detriment of both classroom and football field, and everything else.

Bobby Lowder, whose banking business is his parents and his parents for whom the building on campus is named, not for Bobby Lowder, the half-wit, who caused by himself to have banking regulators shut his parents’ bank down, taken over by BB&T.

April 10, 2012 Bobby Lowder was REMOVED as Auburn University Board of Trustees, but his legacy RUINED Auburn during his entire time he used his PARENT’S MONEY from Colonial Bank, and into the future, as a direct result.

SHAMBLES.

Auburn Football is in SHAMBLES in the classroom and on the football field because of Bobby Lowder.

Rodney Garner wants to go there.

___________
HAVE AT IT.
___________

I could care less.

Mark Richt will take over the # 1 spot in the nation in providing

JSS

NFL grown men whom he can fawn all over as a grown man himself. I could care less.

His primary function, for which he was given a bye on his Position Coach responsibilities, as DL coach he has 2012

FAILED.

His position coach job responsibilities 2012, he has

FAILED MISERABLY.

Good Riddance and I am glad he is going to Auburn. Growing up, Auburn was my # 1 Rival. We beat Florida regularly and the JAX games at the stadium where they play the Gator Bowl every year starting 1946, sixty-six years’ ago were fun, beating Florida every time. That has since changed and it is a struggle even in our best seasons’ to beat their worst teams. That, too, changed this one season or they would’ve had their 4th National Championship in 16 seasons. His defensive line did very well that game. That’s 1 game. The entire rest of 2012, his defensive line did next to nothing. Georgia Tech, in my lifetime, 1957 through today, was NEVER a Rival, is not a Rival, and never ever will be in the future, our Rival. Georgia Tech is not in the same class as our Top 10 All-Time Football Program in Wins.

Auburn.

If you think Detroit is a hell hole, Auburn is right there with them.

There will NOT be 1 single recruit to The University of Georgia who will listen to him at Auburn, and go there now that he is there, rather than here. Not 1 will leave us to join him there. Not 1.

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out

RODNEY GARNER.

Nothing in this post is anything but my own words, not cut and pasted from ANYWHERE, nor stolen from ANYWHERE, nor copied from anywhere without their permission. It is ORIGINAL WORK I wrote of MY DAMN HOBBY. If it sounds like I know what the hell I am talking about, it’s because this is my hobby. What’s your hobby ? Fawning over grown men ? As a walk-on myself, I understand college and its value, and I understand collegiate sports as the 8th fastest runner in the state of Georgia.

This knucklehead is just a clown… I had real world credentials before I ever stepped foot on the university campus… “First time away from home on their own,” glad I didn’t have their parents… I’d been to Europe and Asia by 15 without Mommy and Daddy holding my hand and paying my bills… Yeah every degree is not the same, some have even more value, that New Media Master’s allows me to sit around and blog because I can do with 4 people what it used to a production company of hundreds to do and get paid substantial to do it… But because 27 years ago, that supposedly “80th ranked regional ‘college’ university” accented my real world education with new technologies way before they became what is now commonplace, the MIT, Harvard, and even UGA folks came to students of the “hell-hole” to learn… You have a warped idea of Jefferson called “matriculation.”

Sorry, as an ex-athlete, it is your talents (or lack of them) which athletes are known for, the place you played is secondary… Brett Favre (love him or hate him) was never introduced: “Southern Mississippi – Brett Favre!” I guess we’ll have to hear: Southern California/Georgia – Jarvis Jones then? That is silly drivel… They are paid athletes, it not “fawning.” They play a game for money, you need to know the difference… I understand that it is a business first masquerading as sport… The only athletes I “fawn” over are on the athletic track and cross-country course…

C’mon Schultz, get real. The birds don’t HAVE to have this one. It would help everyone breathe easier if they win but they don’t HAVE to have it. And I don’t think they have anything left to prove to ANYBODY, frankly. I notice just how quite ESPN has been on the falcons’ all week. Either way, I am VERY concerned about Matt Ryan or any other Falcon for that matter against this “cheap shot” defense of Detroit. Let’s first hope Ryan doesn’t get messed up like he did last year in the Motor City; Same goes for the other 21 bird-men. THEN we’ll go for that win; Falcons take ‘em 31-16.

I could beat the Lions with a scratch team of nursing home grandmas wearing pajamas. The Lions are finished, they’ve always been finished. They are the Detroit Liars. I’ve been in their locker room. I saw coloring books, balloons, and gaily dressed little daffodils….and that was just the defensive linemen. You should see the secondary. There isn’t a decent jockstrap between them. Falcons 36. Liars 23 (halftime score).

I remember a couple of years ago, you losers were laughing at the Saints for losing to Seattle in the 1st round. Now the same fate will be awaiting. That number 2 or 1 defense is no joke, and the beast mode at running back along with the uprising young qb will make short work again vs the underachieving JOKE known as CHOKE.

Talk is cheap but the guys are saying all the right things. Let’s see what happens when the lights go up and tonight’s nationally televised game starts. We need to keep working on the running game and let Calvin be Calvin but prevent anyone else from hurting us. Detroit has been beat like a drum this year so there is a ton of film showing how to do it so we should not be out-coached. Our offensive and defensive coordinators ought to be able to develop the right schemes leaving it to the players to just having to execute.

Oh, by the way, last time I checked Mike Vick is looking for a job. I wish him the best but our focus is on Detroit and then Tampa Bay (if it still matters). After that, as has been rightly pointed out, Falcons have some demons to exorcise in the playoffs. This has to be the year and I know it will be as these guys now understand that it doesn’t matter who you play or where you play them, you have to show-up, man-up, and step-up your game when the lose-one-and-go-directly-home playoffs begin.
