LIVE: Falcons have chance to clinch playoff bye (or more)

CHARLOTTE — Good morning. When I walked out of the deck parking lot toward the media entrance of the stadium (a healthy walk here at Bank of America Stadium), there was only a slight drizzle. But a few minutes later, the skies opened up, I got drenched and it totally ruined my coiffure.
(Go ahead, I’ll give you a few minutes to laugh. … Waiting. … Still waiting. … )
So yes, it is raining here in Charlotte. The forecast says there’s only a 10 percent chance of showers, but that 10 percent clearly resides on this block. So at the very least, the field will be slippery for the Falcons’ game against the Carolina Panthers today.
Some folks around the Falcons are worried about this game. The Panthers are only 3-9 but seven of those losses have come by six points or less (one in overtime). The Falcons were fortunate to rally and beat Carolina 30-28 on a last-minute field goal drive in Week 4.
Tackle Tyson Clabo said of the Panthers, “They’re the exact opposite team of us. They’re in every game but somehow they find a way lose. We’re in every game and we find a way to win. It only takes a bounce of the ball here or there to change the whole thing. They’re a good team and they’ll be at home.”
The X-factor for Carolina obviously is Cam Newton. Every week it seems like there are new stories that quote anonymous players, questioning Newton’s attitude and leadership. Personally, I don’t like anonymous quotes. But the questions about Newton’s maturity have been there from day one so it will be interesting to see how he reacts to all of this and whether he grows from it. If he goes in the wrong direction, the Panthers are sunk because they’ve invested a lot in him from a financial and marketing standpoint.
Back to the Falcons. At 11-1, they’ve already clinched a playoff berth and the NFC South Division. They can clinch one of the top two seeds — and therefore a first-round bye — with a win over Carolina and ONE of the following two scenarios: 1) A San Francisco loss (home vs. Miami: OR 2) Chicago loss or tie (at Minnesota) and a Green Bay loss or tie (home vs. Detroit). A tie with Carolina and losses by Chicago and Green Bay also would clinch the bye.
The Falcons would clinch the NFC’s No. 1 seed and home field through the playoffs with a win, AND a loss by San Francisco AND losses or ties by Chicago and Green Bay.

If our O-line doesn’t step it up, there will be no playoff wins. Bears have a ferocious pass rush and so do the Giants. If Clay Matthews is healthy, he’s the best pass rushing LB in the league. No way we survive if our O-line keeps getting mashed.

The fact that the Falcons are behind isn’t that surprising, it’s the lack of intensity and lack luster play on both sides of the ball. You can’t come out and play without any passion and lacking aggression is not acceptable.

I think this team is going to be an exact repeat of UGA. Soft schedule, never really dominating except for a couple of games. Weak D-line, no pressure on QBs, poor tackling. A team with a good O-line will run through this team like tissue paper in the playoffs. This opinion is based on the entire season, not just this game. I keep hoping one week I’ll watch and this team will play better fundamentally, instead of relying on some teams to beat themselves. Well, it will not be this week….

The Falcons have mailed in several games (CAR 2x, OAK, ARI) this year. They’ve only won a few of them because the teams they were playing were complete garbage and find ways to lose.
I haven’t seen the consistent game-to-game sharpness that leads me to believe this team is a serious contender. Not enough of a pass rush, inconsistent play-calling and a weak running game.

I’m going to say this again, Mike Smith steadfastly refuses to let the Falcons play the type of ball that made this team dominate offensively at the beginning of the season, which revolves around the pass (to set up the run). You can accomplish the same goals, by recognizing the fact that we are not a “smash mouth” football team, yet we have tons of advantages at WR & TE. This offensive line isn’t capable of moving the pile at will, and is much better at pass protection than run blocking.
The Falcons are more similar to New England offensively, but Mike Smith is trying to make us the 49er’s. This is just plain stupid, stubborn, and will result in a first round exit once again.

What I’ve watched of this game has been bizarre. Why on Earth do you call a pass play to Gonzalez practically at the line of scrimmage on a 3rd and 10? Anyone?
The Falcons have been able to bounce back from a bunch of similar situations this season, but so far there’s been nothing to indicate that this game won’t end with a big fat “L”. I’d hate to see that come against a team that A) 3-9 and B) a division rival that, while young and less experienced will build upon this game confidence-wise. I know Mr. Schultz just wrote a column about how the Falcons “know” they can’t settle in and coast at 11-1, but so far in this game their play is about as consistent with that statement as when they said last season’s offense would be “explosive”.
Still a half to go in the game, I realize. And I know the Falcons will be in the playoffs and still very likely have home field advantage. But it’s a very good thing there are no “complete” teams in the NFL this year, because it’s been abundantly clear all season that Atlanta has no pass rush outside of Abraham and their run game is hit and mostly miss. I remain guardedly optimistic they can go deep despite these issues and maybe even pull out a Superbowl win, but that’s my heart talking. My head tells me they’re going to have to find a whole new level of play to come close to that despite their record.

This is my “now let’s just everybody lose week!” Two high school teams I was pulling for lose. UGA loses. And now the Falcons. Which raises some questions concerning them. What moron coined the term “Matty Ice”. That moronic term should be scrapped for “Matty Stink”. Michael Turner crumbles when struck at the line of scrimmage. This offensive line can neither pass or run block. And this defense can stop nobody. Carolina called the Falcons out this week that they were better. Think the Falcons would go to Charlotte with something to prove? I think so, that they are as bad as questioned. The ESPN, Fox, and NBC NFL sports pundits have been questioning the Falcons each week as they have progressed with losing one game. Conclusion, how has this bunch, even with the weak schedule squeaked by without looking good? Bottom line, another one-and-done trip to the playoffs.

Seriously, the offensive line is suspect at this point. As many have pointed out they have a hard time with blitzes and rushing through the A gaps.
Defense needs a real pass rusher. Face it, Abraham is done, although he can impact one or two plays a game, but as a sack man he’s done. Can’t have the Beirman as you’re only real pass rusher.
And as for Ryan. its time to really stand up. These are the hard games, at least look like you have control after yo’ve been beat around a bit. This is the thrid or 4th game in a row where he is not living up to ALL WORLD label.
All I can hear is – “He’s a Bomb Steak, he’s a bomb.” LOL
Whether true or not his last 4 games are proving Ryan to be less then great.

As much as I hate to say it, we deserve this. We have been scabbing by way too much. The Panthers aren’t following the script that they/OAK/ARI and a few other teams have followed this season. Again, we deserve this beating. The question will be how the team responds. As long as you’re winning when you’re playing like crap, your players will think that the effort is good enough. Today, we’re playing a team that is inspired and refuses to help us out. THIS is the result that we should expect if we play like this.

Disgraceful performance by the Falcons. It’s on the head coach…they clinched the division last week, had a long week thanks to the Thursday night game, and Coach Smith completely failed to have this team prepared to play in terms of motivation. Disgraceful performance by the Falcons. It’s on the head coach…they clinched the division last week, had a long week thanks to the Thursday night game, and Coach Smith completely failed to have this team prepared to play in terms of motivation. It is their ability to play a game like this that makes me think they’re not getting anything done in the playoffs this year despite the record they’ve put together so far.

Falcons catch a 2 pt conversion originally called good by the ref right in front of the catch. Then overturned by the white hat 25 yds away… we have to use a challenge, white hat claims no evidence to overturn. (i don’t know what he was watching).
It costs us 2 points, a timeout, no challenges and makes us have and extra possession to win the game.
Carolina pass catch or no catch: called incomplete and the replay is closes could go either way… white hat overturns the call and rewards Panthers catch yardage.

We may not can fix the rushing defense fast but for the life of me it looks like we could learn that if its 3rd and 8 that the receivers have to at least get to the first down stick and that Ryan wouldn’t continue to dump it off so short we have no chance of getting a first down.

Snake Doc, you nailed it. Ryan is pretty good, but pretty good at the QB doesn’t win Super Bowls. Not anymore. The last pretty good QB to win one was Brad Johnson in 2002. Every one since then has been won by a future Hall of Famer.

Just a poor, poor game. We didn’t show any resiliency today, Smitty. It was a hard-fought second half for about ten minutes. That’s about it. I will say one thing, though. You don’t burn this tape. Every player should have this garbage seared into their retinas. This was totally unacceptable from a team that has competed (not always well) in every other game this year.

I’m going to say this again, Mike Smith steadfastly refuses to let the Falcons play the type of ball that made this team dominate offensively at the beginning of the season, which revolves around the pass (to set up the run). You can accomplish the same goals, by recognizing the fact that we are not a “smash mouth” football team, yet we have tons of advantages at WR & TE. This offensive line isn’t capable of moving the pile at will, and is much better at pass protection than run blocking.
The Falcons are more similar to New England offensively, but Mike Smith is trying to make us the 49er’s. This is just plain stupid, stubborn, and will result in a first round exit once again.

Tampa had a great Defence that is why Tampa and Brad Johnson won a SB. Atlanta does not have a great D and still needs DL help, a real pass rusher, and OL help.
Have a great “D’ and maybe Ryan wins a SB. Until then it just ain’t gonna happen. Matty Ice is not a Brady or, Manning or Rothlesberger. He can’t win BIG Games by himself. In that respect, and it pains me to say this, he is a choke against great teams. Notice I said teams.

The offense has been terrible today. No running game whatsoever, and it is hard to believe that #33 is still getting the ball in any important situation. They need a better OL for Ryan because he has no escapability. But the defense has been much worse: without a clue how to cover any receivers or to otherwise stop Cam Newton. Looks too much like their usual playoff form and I hope it is just a letdown from winning the division.

Anyway, we have to play better. There is no doubt about that. On the other hand, we’ve been skating by against bad teams. The Panthers happened to get another shot at us. They didn’t follow the script. They kicked our teeth in for two quarters and we did nothing. When we finally showed up at the stadium, we were down by 23 points and needed everything to go our way. That is pathetic and every player on our team knows it. Nobody, even Falcon fans, will give this team much respect after today. That isn’t totally fair, but it’s a fact. These guys have to decide if they want to be, in the words of my dad, “cheese champions,” or if they want to be something worthwhile. I hate going to all the cliches, but I don’t know that there are any other words.

TD’s past personnel decisions are now hurting the Falcons. Went cheap in the D-Line not ponying up for Peppers and taking Edwards instead. For whatever reason, the Falcons dialed one in today. I blame Mike (bobby Cox of the NFL) Smith for not getting his team ready. The defense was shredded today and it looks like one playoff win is the end goal of this smoke and mirrors team.

Lord….please slap the OC & HC….no more of this….we are a running team…because Smitty you are not….please throw the ball down field, not these little short dump offs…..start running crossing and drag patterns again….play the seam pass and control the ball. That’ll protect the defense, it’s called changing field position even if you don’t score. 1 good thing Today, no tip passes ….when Ryan tries to throw these dink & dunk passes he gets tipped alot.

Mike Smith is not the coach to get this team to the next level. He will always coach down to the level of his opponent and scheme to his own design rather than the talent he has on the roster.
And the tackling on defense is horrendous. Cam Newton is a talented player, but the Falcons made him look like he was back at Auburn and unquestionably the best player at his level.

I hate losing but I rather lose today than last week. Matt Ryan has to step up his game if the Falcons are to advance in the playoffs, and this Oline has to play better.
Why with all reserves in the Carolina Defensive Backfield we try to run turner instead of attacking in the air. I still cannot understand why we go away from our strength so often in many games.

Defense played well enough for us to win.
MR2 did too.
So did special teams.
Turner did what you expect–he sucked.
The game was lost by the O-Line.
They kept our D on the field almost the entire first half. Opening drive sack. MR2 had no time all day. Last 4th down play ending in INT–most important play of the game–Carolina rushes AT MOST 4, and MR2 has a defender in his face the instant he looks up field. Horrible.
This could have been a typical Falcon win. But the O-Line got their rears kicked up and down the field. Actually, not up and down the field. Sort of like in on spot for three snaps at a time.

Anyway, the first half is what did us in. The play calling is way too conservative, and I’m starting to agree with those who place the blame for that on Mike Smith. I thought that the arrival of Dirk Koetter would really open this offense up, but I swear Smitty continues to make his input felt. As for the running game, will they please make Quizz Rogers the starter? Whenever Turner runs, you can pretty much bet that he won’t do much.

Today these guys looked about as organized as a Chinese fire drill! If they continue to play like this for the rest of the season, you can kiss any playoff wins goodbye. It appears that another year of “flash-in-the-pan” football may be making its appearance in our fair city. I hope not, but, hey…don’t despair. At least the birds will be consistent. These Falcons teams under coach Smith will continue to be held back by his conservative style of coaching. It shows on both sides of the ball even though he is not the coordinator. This team will never blow out an opponent. Mike Smith has too much of a percentages and by the book mentality and that alone will keep this team from ever reaching its full potential.
