Biggest problem right now is “O” line.

Next biggest problem? Play calling.

M. Turner. Last year with the Falcons.

Mike Smith. Another year of close calls like this? He’s done.

Falcons are mostly like one and done in the playoffs.

Look for big trades and draft picks going toward the “O” line. Lots of changes there.

Mike Smith is essentially the modern-day Marty Schottenheimer. Consistent winner in the regular season who’s conservative style doesn’t work in the playoffs (or at least hasn’t to this point). No, today wasn’t a playoff game, but the lack of urgency we saw today doesn’t bode well.

Much like Bobby Cox’s Braves teams did so many times, this year’s Falcons squad – if today was any indication – looks content to coast into the playoffs with a fat division lead. History tells us that’s a very dangerous game to play. Other than the 2009 Saints, I can’t think of a team in recent memory that was able to flip the switch in the playoffs after taking their foot off the gas down the stretch.

I’m not saying this team can’t still get to the Super Bowl, but it sure seems like we peaked early in the season. Over the last month this team has played very mediocre football. I don’t know if you can peak twice in one year, but now be a great time.

I’m sure tomorrow we will hear all the normal buzz from Flowery Branch with words like “process”. “evaluate” and “improvement”. However, as many of you have noted, this team doesn’t give me any real hope that things will go better once the playoffs start. The fact that Blank is trying to shake down the politicians and the GWCC officials to use public money for a new stadium to further fatten his wallet makes me almost look forward to the collapse of his team when it really counts. These guys can’t run the ball or stop the run.

I’m a Birds fan, but I thought the Panthers were better than we were in the earlier game, and they were MUCH the better team today. I saw this coming. If we had to play them again, they’d probably beat us again. What about our record, you say? We’ve beaten only one team with a winning record all year. We’re just not that good. Sort of average. Everything else is hype.

It is games like this why people do not look at us as serious contenders. We should have won this game easily. That is what an 11-1 team should do playing a 4-8 team whether it is on their home field or not. The birds were ill prepared for this game and if I was Arthur Blank I would want a meeting with the coach with an explanation of why we played so poorly.

Today was definitely a market correction. The panthers were better than their record, and the Falcons were not worthy of their 11-1 mark.

Having said that, yes, this display is very concerning. This has nothing to do with jumping off a bandwagon. How can you watch the last 7 quarters of Falcons football and think this team is going to do anything but lose the first playoff game?

When the Giants win next week, the Falcons will likely be staring at the 4th playoff seed down. I don’t see them winning any of their remaining games — unless something changes drastically. Just being real.

Embarrassing ! The Panthers talked smack then backed it up ! Mike Smith was laughing on sideline much the game. Was it funny watching Hardy show you his team is better than yours ? The only players I saw playing hard today were Roddy & Quizz. The rest of the team deserves no paycheck for this week.

Falcons haven’t looked good (especially the offense) in 6 games. Though we have 4 wins in that span, it has been obvious that this team was just surviving from week to week. (Also, the level of competition during said span has been mediocre at best.) We have question marks in every aspect of the game: Offense (Ryan looks spooked WAY too often, and the running game is sorely lacking); Defense (gives up too many yards, especially rushing, and little pass rush outside of Abraham); Special Teams (kicking game a little suspect, but the lack of a return game is most troubling–when is the last time we took one back for a TD?!).

Next week will be a good barometer as a Giants team that just hung 52 on the Ain’ts (as in “ain’t” goin to the playoffs) comes calling. Forget “Rise-Up!”, Falcons better wake up.

However, better to get the wake-up call now instead of in January.

Mike Smith better have his team ready to play The New York football Giants, If not they’ll get physically manhandled like the Panthers did them today. Rumor through the week said the Falcons would use Jaquizz Rodgers more, I didn’t see it today. Also the offense seems out of sync again, you can’t start playing better after a first half of lousy football. Matt Ryan is not playing consistent good football- he’s streaky at best. And his pocket presence wasn’t good at times, if in doubt take off running toward the side lines. Falcons keep running Turner on those same plays and getting the same results. A two yard gain, that eventually means three and out. I think the fans want to be optimistic about this team, but every time they seem to have us skeptical of what their trying to accomplish. I’ll be watching closely next week- and it shall tell me what I need to know, about this team moving forward.

I will let you know when the Falcons accomplish something, haven given up our seasons’ ticket a long time ago. That game was no fun to watch from the beginning. We’re playing a 3-9 team who is 1-5 at home 2012, and we’re 11-1, and Cam Newton promptly stands up and points to the camera, did you see me ? He keeps it up every drive against us, and takes the ball down the field to the end zone every single drive. Fortunately for us, Cam Newton did not run the football against us and had to settle for all those field goals, or the score would have been a total embarrassment.

10 of 16 on 3rd and 4th downs for the game, Carolina took the lead while we did nothing.

23-0 should have been 35 to nothing.

35 rushing yards Falcons 195 for Carolina.

23 of 35 for 2 TD Cam Newton Passing and 116 yards on 9 rushes and another TD rushing for Cam Newton.

We play defense like Georgia Tech does.

Carolina out played us in every phase of the game.

I’m a life long Falcon FA and I’m telling you that this team plays with no passion…no fire. And that starts at the top. Here we have a offense with two abject beasts at wide receiver and a HOFer TE and we are down 23-0 in the 2nd quarter having touched the ball once in the entire first quarter. This offensive line is a JOkE. It has been all year even going 11-1. The reason nobod gets behind this team is they don’t pass the eye test….or the smell test. Mike Smith Cannot get this done. 3 for 19 in Third down conversions in the last two games says it all. I predicted a blowout but the other way around. How easily I was fooled.
Limp,unimaginative and predictable offense. Those that say our pathetic effort it is a “ruse” to fool the other teams in the division are totally whack.
Winning means winning..Losing does not build confidence.
Lets replace all the starters with the second team players. At least we will see some fire,anger and aggression.

…oh,, and “3 Phases”. Mike Smith is starting to remind me of Fredi Gonzalez the “cap tipper” Well Borgnine, Dumbitiroff, and the appropriately named “Blank”you can count on Blank-4 in the playoffs after this season ends ,, domefield or no domefield. Ryan is a wuss, who looks scared every (and I mean every) time it comes to the big game. I don’t care how many comebacks he has led, he is a hack ,, who throws the ball away so quick (well before the sack comes) and cannot get in position to extend play. Has horrible (by NFL standards) peripheral awareness and today showed why it will be another one-and-done. They showed their true makeup today, and this was not a look past game (as they had 10 days off and knew Carolina would want to prove something). This team could easily be 6-7 or 7-6 ,, easily.

If we had coasted to home field advantage, we probably would have pulled the starters for the last 2 games… Ask the 2009 Colts how that worked out… We need the last two games to mean something so we can try to peak at the right time… The NFL is a league where the team playing the best football at the end of the season wins the superbowl (that is assuming they made the playoffs)

Honestly, the majority of Falcon fans, including myself, had their hearts ripped out on Dec 1st in the SECCG. So if the Falcons do what everybody is expecting to do and that is nothing in January. Then its whatever at this point. I really don’t care right now. I have been so emotionally involved in our local teams for so long that I just can’t do it anymore. My heart was ripped out on DEC 1st so its whatever, if the Falcons want to lay another egg in the playoffs, oh well. Its not like its going to be any surprise. If the Falcons decide to surprise everyone , then great!

How can it change the whole dynamics of the game when we can’t stop them on defense ?

You’re reaching for straws to try to blame the game loss on the officials on a 2-point desperation call with 15 minutes remaining in the game when we can’t run the football 3 yards all season long.

We lost the game because (1) we cannot run the football and (2) because our defense was non-existent when the score should have been 35 to nothing if Cam Newton had run the ball 1 time in the Red Zone on all those field goal drives they settled for. The outcome had NOTHING to do with the officials stealing the game from us on the 2-point conversion, and it had likewise nothing to do with the dynamics of the game where we can’t run the football and can’t get off the field on 3rd and 4th downs against a 3-9 team 1-5 at home.

Quit trying to make excuses for the performance today

Hi Jeff. Know WHY no one takes Falcons seriously? Because of crap like this! Not only did an NFL bottom feeder defeat them to put the skids on a long home losing streak but dominated in the process. To say I am completely embarrassed would be an understatement of monumental proportions. Notice play of Matthew Ryan has been on decline of late in spite of wins? Not even in class of choke Aaron Murray. Should have left Michael Turner in Carolina. The guy has become totally worthless. Wiull Giants whip Falcons in Dome. Considering the Giants put up almost 100 points on the Saints today that seems a good bet. Not confident with Matthew Stafford Lions on horizon. Bucs no pushover either. I said before season Falcons should have traded for Rams Steven Jackson. But the blind loyalty to Non-money Earner Turner by Blank was automatic. Watching Turner tip-toe up a lineman’s back for a half yard was old to me after 1st half of game 1 this year.

Falcons played like this game meant nothing. Coach should of taken the loss at halftime, and sat EVERY starter for the 2nd half. This would of accompished 3 things: 1: Show the Panthers we really dont give a damn about them and this game is meaningless to us. 2: Not risk any injuries. 3. Sitting guys on the bench sometimes allows them to see the game from a different angle, making them focus better in the end.

Thomas Brown, I completely understand. There is nothing here for us to latch on to. If our history was half as rich as some cities then maybe we could of built a bigger and more dedicated fan base a long time ago. The braves would be a great example of this. They had a chance to win championship after championship during their run in the 90’s. All you think about now is the choking. Now its the Falcons who are in position and they are doing the exact same thing.

Sorry but Flap & Nole the Flames had a GREAT following and were a blast to watch. Turner couldn’t sell them on TV in the south back then. The OMNI was packed for the FLAMES but you couldn’t sell Tuborg beer in the south.

@season ticket holder………………..TURNER had them on TV. Turner couldn’t sell ads much during hockey games to products southerns wanted. Tuborg Beer was a HUGE sponsor but that wasn’t working on TV in the south. If people didn’t come to the game you had to have people watch on TV and Turner couldn’t get enough people to watch………….Yes Turner had a stake in the FLAMES being successful because they were making him money or losing him money.

-For the past 5 years you people have been asking when Matt Ryan is going to take the step to becoming an ‘elite’ quarterback. You need to realize that you answer your own question when you are still asking it 5 years later.

He’s a smart kid. He’s got it between the ears. But he doesnt have it in the chest or the fibers. Kid has no heart and his natural playmaking ability is pathetic when you put him beside the other QBs in this league. He’s got great receivers but is scared to throw downfield. Every dropback is a checkdown to a back or a dink and dunk to the tight end or an 8 yard out route or comeback.

Is that precious division we clinched supposed to make us feel better when the Giants humiliate us next week?

Look at all the other teams in playoff contention. Imagine any one of them coming down here in the playoffs, be it first round or after a bye. Do you honestly see this Falcons team winning that game? Against the Packers or Giants or 49ers or whoever? Do you even see the Falcons contending in that game?

We are an NFL afterthought for a reason. We get no respect for a reason. When you really get down to crunch time, to the games that really matter, the product we put on the field is sub-par. Mediocre. Moderately efficient, occasionally effective, but ultimately inferior. They are, in the end, a failure.

But keep chirping about our precious 11 wins. See how much those wins comfort you when we get our face smashed in again in the playoffs. Maybe our offense will even score this time, who knows.

We arent even a laughingstock, because the rest of the league would have to care enough about this team to pay them attention to laugh at them, but they dont.

We are an afterthought.

One loss my behind. You lost to a team that said they were better than you, when their season is done with. Worst thing, we were down 23-0 here, and 23-7 in the first game. Everyone knew, in their hearts, our D was going to get shredded by Cam. He did it last time, and his mistake saved us. We had 3 backups starting in the secondary, and they torched it. They had inexperienced Dbs as well, but for some reason, this offense decided to get in it when it was too late. How about Ryan 7 step drop in the beginning. I see that midget in New Orleans throw deep balls all the time. We never do. Just check downs every time. And Ryan misses on those as well. Hilarious. The Giants will show this team next week, whatever we do in the postseason, it’ll all be told by next week’s game.

What have Falcons’ ever given us besides Tommy Nobis by himself out there ? When we started seasons’ tickets, the reason to go watch the games was to see the great players the other teams have. Now, we drive 192 miles to the game, and watch a 3-9 team beat our 11-1 team because they have Cam Newton.

TB — If you will remember (if you can), while the D let Cam have his way a lot of the time, they stiffened up and held the Panthers to field goals when they needed to. That’s what gave the pathetic offense a chance to get us back in the game. But the offense was too pathetic to keep us close!

This was a good loss IMO. Shows the team that they need to refocus. 2 DBs out. The main game is next week against NY. They are a playoff team and it is a home game, which is exactly the scenario the Falcons will face in their first playoff game – playing a playoff team at home. Beating Carolina on the road meant nothing. More important to win next weeks game, especially after the Giants put up 52 today.

A lot of panic on this blog. Don’t lose sight of the goal. This was a bad loss, but it means no more than any of the empty regular season wins from the last few years. This team will be judged by what it does in the playoffs. If they get it together by then, this will all be forgotten. If they don’t, there will be plenty of time for doubting and questioning at that time.

Call a more balanced game and fix the problems in the defensive front 7 and they can put this behind them.

The Falcons have played a very easy schedule and do not have the elite talent you look for in a SuperBowl bound team. We have too many holes. We don’t put enough pressure on QBs and our offensive line is rather weak. We need another good linebacker and cornerback as well (since you really need 3 good starting corners these days). Our QB is good but not in the elite group of QBs. Our RB is very slow and not of much help anymore. The problem has more to do with talent than coaching. The elite QBs like Rogers and Manning will kill us in the playoffs. This has not changed from the 2 previous years.

Deion Sanders won 2 Super Bowls after we just let him leave as a 5th year free agent. He came back here and did it to us. Other than he, there isn’t anyone in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, who really played for the Falcons – and, he only played a third of his Pro Bowl years here. Falcons run the same old predictable plays over and over and over each week. I thought Mike Mularkey was gone? Nolan cannot figure out how to stop SCam Newton? When they run that option one player knocks the QB down and another takes the RB ALWAYS!!! It’s not rocket science. This team has a bunch of mediocre, overachieving players that Dimitroff has drafted. Speaking of Dimitroff, how has his top draft picks been turning out??? DL and OL are still weak and cannot put pressure on a QB with the front four or protect the Glass Queen Ryan (who cracks under pressure). Giants coming to town next Sunday…oh lawd!!!

Sometimes it doesn’t seem t matter who’s coaching this team, it’s same old same old. Dirk Koetter looks to be Mike Mularkey light. I was never in favor of hitching our ride to one Matt Ryan and even though it takes a whole team to lose, this guy is not someone who can elevate his team to a higher leavel ala Brady or Rodgers. He is average to sometimes good, never great. We were only missing 1 impact player, Moore at safety so can’t blame it on that. It was disgusting, I took my Falcons jersey OFF at 1/2 time even though Warrick Dunn had nothing to do with that stinker the team laid in Charlotte. I picked them but I should’ve seen “trap game” coming, it was written all over it. This is what they come out like after an extra long break??? No breaks for the rest of the season! I’m frustrated because our weaknesses were our weaknesses last year and nothing was done but change the coordinators. Our o-line stunk last yr and reeks again this yr, but Dimitroff doesn’t seem willing to do anything about that personnel. We still have not compliment to Abe and our fat over the hill runner is so done. I was ready to jettison him last yr but again, they elected to stay the course. We have 1 and done in the playoffs in our future AGAIN. Arthur, that won’t make ramming a new stadium we don’t need down our throats any more palatable to the public, believe me. If we don’t come out next week on fire against the Giants, this team will never earn any national or even local, respect. Carolina is improved, no doubt but we had no response until it was too little, too late.

Gonzalez answered exactly like the public relations department instructed. I dealt a reporter has gotten any raw emotions out of him for years, which is part of the reason he will be in the hall. Carolina does what Georgia does so often they talk a lot more than they walk. It is more about them and less about team. These are the kind of guys the Players Association will have to put on welfare years from now because they think their entitled to blow their mouth off, show no respect for the game and blow their money doing so. It is the foundation of Losersville, we have seen our share in this town, but no more, now we worry if we are good enough to win a Super Bowl. Before Arthur Blank the Falcons were very consistent…….consistently bad (for the most part) with a few redeeming years thrown in. After Arthur Blank purchased the team we have been consistent in improvement, no doubt a winning tradition has started. But we are still a couple of key players short to become that perennial power.

It’s sad that this new stadium is going to be shoved down our throats by the political machine. There is nothing wrong with the GA Dome and if Arthur thinks he has the fan base to not only buy a ticket but also a personal seat license than he has tremendously over estimated the disposable income of the average Atlanta Falcons fan.

And if you are going to build it despite the position of your fan base and tax payers please build it on the old GM site in Doraville, a touch of country in the city.

my team is the Falcons and really I respect you for standing up for your team and its D regardless if they had a 10 point lead…..if they gave up 300 yards on the ground and have not won anything since Vince Dooly….you a fan and thats what fans do! I think winning 11 out of 13 games is a significant accomplishment in this league. While I’ve been surprised by some of the wins, I’ve enjoyed them all. So far it’s been a good season, the best I can remember. If the play offs is all that matters, why bother buying tickets to regular season games? It’s fun to go, and it’s more fun to win. That’s why.
I don’t care for all the negative comments, but I suppose it’s okay to say whatever you like about professionals. They’re paid to win. On the other hand, you all sound like Georgia fans and some are even worse, you sound like Alabama fans. That’s the ultimate insult.

Been behind Falcons since they arrived in 1966.. And I have learned one very important lesson here. And that is to just sit back and enjoy watching them play in the NFL every week and don’t expect Super Bowls . Mostly the same handful of teams win the big game every year. I was completely shocked that Falcons even made it to ONE Super Bowl. If you want to take it one step further, no team that makes it’s home in Ga. ever wins a so called big game. Get used to it like I did..( and as a season ticket holder for UGA games, I know what disappointment is on a frequent basis)

Anyone who knows anything about football knows what happened. You have a team that’s worked hard all year and already made the playoffs vs a team that’s dwelt in the cellar and is playing in the only “playoff” game they’ll see this season. The Falcons were as flat as week-old road kill. No adrenalin……it happens. BUT…they better use this as a learning tool in order to be successful in the post-season. All losses aren’t bad.

I have no clue why the national media does not believe!! It is very frustrating since one can only guess what team shows. Yes it was basically a mental off-week in between two big games (Saints and Giants). But a great team will show at kick-off and then shut it down after they put a 3-9 team away (early). It is time for Turner to play on special teams, block for the better running back, or stand on the sideline. Also time in the offseason to find some beef..Oh yea, do not forget my 100% sale…

Here’s the problem in a nutshell: I believe Matt Ryan is a very good quarterback, who if he keeps improving will cement his place as an “elite quarterback.” But he’s not there yet and I’ll tell you why. Matt has done a great job during his off seasons focusing on particular aspects of his game that he knows he must improve upon in order to get better. I applaud him for that. Fans complained last year that he couldn’t throw the deep ball, then in the off season he bulked up a bit and now no on questions whether he can throw the deep ball. Check that one off the list. But there’s another area of Matt’s game that needs extensive work this off season: THE ABILITY TO EXTEND PLAYS! Because the offensive line has many weaknesses, it is imperative for the quarterback to be able to consistently extend a play. I don’t mean scramble for yardage each time the pocket breaks down. I’m talking about having enough athletic ability to move up, move right, left, swivel, use your footwork, etc. to avoid the rush, and also avoid the MANY 3 and outs the Falcon offense has shown this year. The most elite QBs in the league are capable of extending plays when things break down: Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Big Ben, Tony Romo, Tom Brady, hell, even Peyton and Eli Manning! I LOVE my Falcons! Been a fan since I was 12, but this team will go nowhere in the postseason until Matt can improve on this aspect of his game. I hope he and his coaches realize this and make it a point of focus this off season. Best wishes Atlanta Falcons this postseason. Let’s get that playoff monkey off our backs. Peace everyone.

You know when Blank stops showing up for games that he knows this team is a perennial joke come December and January. But, Arty, you are the one who jumped on board with the post-Vick plan of building a team around the edges, thinking you could get by with mediocre O & D lines. Are you that obtuse? Building the kind of perennial teams that the Colts, Steelers,Pats, etc. field starts at the core ,,,dumba$$. How do you think these teams show up every year?? ..because they have all the flash and dash? Falcons are the equivalent of a guy wearing a bunch of cheap gold bling and showing when all he has in his wallet is $8 (O and D Line) or the Fast and Furious equivalent of a guy pulling up next to you in a souped up Honda Civic with loud exhaust (Roddy White) and when the light turns green (playoffs) the car does about zero to 60 in 10.8 seconds. Sorry ,, note of clarification. Blank allowed this team to be built around the edges going back to the beginning of his tenure (not just in post-Vick era). From McKay to Dimitroff, he was told and sold on Speed on the Edge. We were all duped when they drafted Turner and looked like they may be going the right direction in terms of Trench warfare (and now look at how Turner does, even though he is past his prime and it shows). There is Stench in the Trench and it can’t be overlooked. Good thing you weren’t calling the shots at Home Depot Arty!!

In other words, I have been a Falcons Fan since the 70’s, and I get fired up every Sunday or whatever night of the week it is and love my team ,, but that doesn’t mean I will praise them no matter what – especially when they could easily be 6-7 right now if not for luck. Just because your married doesn’t mean you’ve gone blind as the old saying goes.

Why is everyone complaining about the game. The Falcons did not play well, but this game did not matter win or lose in regarding to the Falcons season. This lose is not going to make or break the team. Atlanta also had Samuel, and Moore out which was huge yesterday. The Falcons will have a good game vs the Giants. There are to many Falcons band wagon fans in here it is sick. They are 11-2. There are plenty of NFL teams that would love that record during this time of the season.

I knew hey would lose (I think they probably did too) I don’t care because they played the game like it was a scrimmage and it probably was. The birds have to win one more to clinch and bye and home field (I dont care about that either BTW) and they will beat on of the last three opponents they face. With the playoffs in the bag, rest the wounded and play as much as you have to but don’t get anyone hurt. The Panthers will be talking trash from their man-caves while routing for the birds in the playoffs.
