Jay Rome's touchdown catch gave Georgia 7-0 lead two plays after fake punt. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
(I’ll be back with my column on the Georgia-Alabama SEC championship soon. Until then, here are my three “short takes” on the game.)
1. Great drive until the last decision: Trialing 32-28, Georgia was given a second chance to drive for a winning touchdown when an Aaron Murray interception was turned over on replay, which showed the ball hit the ground. So with the ball at the Dogs’ 28 on second-and-10, Murray then capitalized when completed passes to Arthur Lynch (15 yards), Tavarres King (23) and Lynch again (26), moving the ball to the Alabama 8. However, with the final seconds (from :09 after Lynch’s second catch) ticking down, Murray did not take the ensuing snap and spike the ball to stop the clock. Instead, he ran a play and completed a tipped pass to Chris Conley, who was tackled at the Alabama 5 and time ran out. It was a great three plays and a dreadful fourth. While it’s no guarantee that the result would have been different, spiking the ball to stop the clock would have allowed the Dogs to set up for one more play, potentially a more successful one.
2. It’s still about blocking and tackling: I know Georgia parlayed a fake punt into a first down and eventually a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead, and Alec Ogletree’s 55-yard return of a blocked field goal (by Cornelius Washington) gave the Dogs a seemingly insurmountable 21-10 lead in the third quarter. But we saw again why football is still about being able to knock the other guy over. Alabama’s offensive line, widely considered the best in the nation, took over the game in the second half, enabling the Tide’s Eddie Lacy and T.J. Yeldon to pile rushing yards and the team to drive to three touchdowns after trailing 21-10. As Alabama’s line physically beat up the Dogs’ front, Georgia’s defense started to tire and missed tackles.
3. Georgia proved its worth: It’s probably of little consolation to Georgia fans but the Bulldogs proved their worth in this game. Some doubted their standing of being the nation’s third best team, behind Notre Dame and Alabama (according to BCS rankings). There were criticisms of their perceived easy schedule and the way they were manhandled by South Carolina earlier in the season. But Georgia just narrowly lost a game to a program that has won two of the last three BCS championships and will be favored for another title against Notre Dame. There were four lead changes in the second half. If the Dogs don’t let down, they will have a chance in a bowl game to finish off a 12-2 season with possibly a top-5 ranking.

Seemed to me watching the broadcast like the call to not spike came from the sidelines, not from Murray. Bad decision either way, but it didn’t seem to me like Murray was at fault.
Let’s be real, though, they lost that game because they played run defense all game like the 2005 Falcons during the Samkon Gado game, not because they didn’t spike it with 5 seconds left. It never should have come to that.

Kudos to the Dawgs for a great game. Probably the worst coaching decisions I’ve ever seen during the last 15 seconds. Why didn’t Murray spike the ball??????? You don’t throw a flair pass SHORT of the goal line with 9 seconds left!!!!!!! These guys persevered even with poor leadership.

Don’t you blame this on Murray!!!!! This was on the coaches! Clock management has always been a huge weakness of Richt’s. I love Richt, and I truly believe he is the coach for UGA, but he seriously needs to work on clock management! Our boys played their hearts out and should have won this game, but they can hold their heads high. They showed all the haters that they can play with Alabama or anyone else in the country.

Great game and when you think about it the reason Bobo didn’t chose to spike the ball is because Georgia was trying to use the confusion of hurry up to get Bama to make a mistake and us score. Murray couldn’t help that the Bama guy tipped the ball and the reason Conley caught it was because he turned around to find the tipped ball hitting him in the chest. Natural reaction made him catch it. Great game and this is one of those times that someone had to lose.
The only questioned call was , with 5 minutes to go and we are 3rd and 1 before Murray hiked the ball Bama bunched up the middle and Murray should have called for an audible or called time out because there was no way Gurley was going to make that one yard as tight as that middle was.

We lost this game when we went 3 and out on our next possession after Bama scored the second to last TD. A couple first downs and even a FG could’ve put Bama in a corner. Murray should’ve spiked the ball but Georgia shouldn’t have been in that spot to begin with anyway. This is most heartbreaking loss since the FG loss to Florida three years ago. Have mixed emotions about the last play. If we had caught Alabama napping and got a quick “hurry up” TD, everyone would be talking about what great coaching it was. (I do wish the receiver had thought quickly enough to drop the deflection.)
Alabama could run the ball at will, even when we KNEW it was coming. And that was the main difference in the game.
The officiating seemed very poor…lots of missed calls. But at least they went in both directions, and didn’t swing the game either way.
Going into the game, everyone pretty much knew that Alabama had a big advantage in their offensive line. Alabama recruits these 6′5″ 275 pounders…puts them on a high-protein diet at the training table…and bulks them up to 325 pounds or so by sending them to the weight room every day. Georgia recruits these 6′5″ 275 pounds…and bulks them up to 350 pounds by sending them to the Old Country Buffet.

After cooling off for a little while, having a beer and grilling salmon, I now feel proud of how my Dawgs played. We matched up very well against what has been the gold standard of the NCAA for the past five years. If you had told me beforehand that we would score three offensive TDs, one defensive TD, lose by only 4 points and have just 100 yards less offense than Bama, I would have been ecstatic. This was a good loss as far as losses go.

Schultz is dim second-guesser. It was a good decision by Bobo/Richt … as that call only takes takes three seconds more than a spike. It got batted, and our guy instinctively caught it. Otherwise, it would have been two good shots at the endzone.
Lay off Richt and Murray. The difference was three A-A’s on Bamas offensive line.

The fact is – we could have won – BUT – Bama has a great team – they ran the ball almost at will at times – they are the better overall team. We have a very, very good team- a day late and a dollar short. Anybody who says Murray cannot compete in the big games is a total idiot – he played like a champ. 1) People are bashing Richt here (if he gave the indication to not spike) but Saban was just as erroneous at the end of the 1st half to not use his timeouts
2) Murray is no Peyton Manning but I have seen worse QB’s here and his overall game was much better than Alabama’s QB (especially considering the head shot he took).
3) The Defense had a bad Q3 but we would not have even had a chance for that last drive if they had not held Alabama in the final minutes.
4) If we ever expect to get good recruits to come to UGA, they are going to want fans who show appreciation for their players not constant criticism.

Terrible way for the game to end. But in the end, BAMA deserved it more. A defense filled with NFL draft picks shouldn’t give up 350 yards rushing (third game in a row for that.) I’m also sick and tired of players like Rambo and Swann who can’t shut their yaps and just play the game. Fitting that the two players who talked the most showed the least. Swann couldn’t cover and was toast on more than one occasion and Rambo was more interested in getting a strip than making a tackle He was also abused by a freshman receiver who simply took the ball away from him (similar play to first series of SC game.) I’m also tired of Murray’s Jekyll/Hyde act — really hope he goes pro. CMR had his chance for a NC and I seriously doubt this opportunity will come along again anytime soon. Back to status quo, I guess.

Game was lost on the second to last drive with stupid play calling by Bobo. 3+ minutes to play with 2 timeouts, we did not need to be playing for the long plays. we had Gurley running well and could have milked the clock with short passes and runs. then on the last drive, Murray looks to the bench and makes the spiking motion but evidently someone told him no, so he threw the deflected pass. Panicky play calling on last two drives is what cost us the game. that and the cumulative penalties that gave bama earlier touchdowns. Bama is better coached. And someone please tell me when tackling ball carriers by the legs went out of style. Williams tried to rap #4 on a run around end toward the end of the game when he had a clear shot at his legs and the guy just ran through him as their backs did most of the game. Did anyone see a leg tackle? I’m proud of our guys but disappointed by the small yet vital things that make champions being constently ignored by the players and staff. However, I’m glad Murray maintained his composure; he showed up to play today. To me, this loss goes on Bobo’s shoulders for getting away from the run early in the game and extemely poor play calling on the last two drives. What good does Gurley do two steps up and to the side of Murray then sliding to the middle as the play develops. He wasn’t a blocker and there was not enough time for him to catch a safety throw and run down the field. Poor poor play calling on offense. I thought Bobo was better than this. I was wrong.

Great game by both teams tonight. Georgia proved a lot of people wrong, but that is little consolation given the prize we were playing for today. Poor decision not to spike the ball when we got it 1st and 10 at Bama’s 8. But Murray wasn’t throwing the ball in the flat, it was tipped by a Bama defender. Murray was throwing the fade to Mitchell in the end zone. Too bad Conley didn’t have the presence of mind to swat the ball to the ground. That would have given us one more play as well.

…As I said twice this week lets hope CMR takes Spurrier’s advice that 12 years is about right to leave a program – again, that is a poorly coached team that does NOT take advantage of the final 15 seconds with a first down on the 8 yard line.
Both Murray and Conley totally missed being coached up, first by Murray not spiking the ball, despite whatever BOOBOO was telling him, and Conley for not knowing to just let the ball go when he knew he was not anywhere near the end zone…
Just another in the many coaching mistakes CMR and others on the staff have made over the past 12 years..

The pass was a fade to the end zone that was tipped short to our guy. C’mon dawg nation! Neither the coaches nor Murray are at fault. He was passing to the guy in the endzone, but it fell short after it was tipped. You just don’t expect, whether you’re a quarterback or a coach, for the ball to get tipped like that. Both teams gave it their hardest, and it came down to Alabama having a better O-Line. This loss sucks. Big time. But our situation could be way worse. We could be Auburn, Arkansas, or Tennessee. I am proud of my team and coaches. I don’t think the aforementioned fan bases can say the same.

Our Coach lost this game. Anyone who knows anything about football knows you spike the ball and then settle down and plan plays to the end zone. Not our idiot coach. With no time outs lets throw a short pass to a receiver who is not close to the side line and run the clock out. But, our guys played great and the score was much closer than I thought it would be. Too bad our coaches make bad decisions.

On the issue of officiating:
How can they not call holding on Bama?
I could see it from my recliner.
The penalties were too lopsided given the holding.
The last play of the game was PI on bama…no call.
How can that happen.

All you SEC homers saying UGA played a weak schedule are hypocrites. If the SEC is the best, like you jokers all claim, then NO SEC schedule is weak and UGA earned their spot.
I think it’s sad they’ll lose out on a BCS bowl in favor of a Gator team they beat.

First of all, Alabama beat us. They lined up and ran the ball down our throats and we couldn’t (or didn’t) stop it. So great for them. All that said, however, it’s just basic football to spike the ball in that situation. It would have allowed the offense — and the coaches — to settle down; it would have allowed the offense to huddle and call the play they really wanted and it may have even allowed Tavarres King, who had been shaken up two plays earlier, to get back on the field. And, it likely would have given us at least two shots, possibly three, to throw the ball into the end zone from just 8 yards out. Bama’s defense was really on its heels but by not spiking the ball, we really sort of equalized things. I sure would like to hear what Richt and Bobo have to say because Murray clearly was asking if he should spike as he ran downfield after the completion to Lynch.

Who cares about the Capital One or Outback Bowl after that? Sure, Georgia could theoretically beat up on a mediocre Michigan team (or whoever) in such a game, but I seriously doubt the team will bother to show up.
And this just happened to a team set to lose every defensive starter, its best WR, and probably (ill-advised though it may be) its quarterback.
This was Georgia’s best chance at a national title since I was a toddler, and it was likely the last such opportunity they’ll have this decade. And they just couldn’t pull it out.
This is easily — EASILY — the most painful Georgia football loss I have ever witnessed. The only way I could possibly feel worse? If I had paid hundreds of dollars to be there and see it firsthand.

Well good game Dogs but we were out coached again, this is the last time we will have a schedule like this, next year we lose most of our defense and pick up LSU , CLEMSON, play SOUTH CAROLINA and a very good FLORIDA team , we only won one game played against a ranked team , FLORIDA. then WE PICK UP BAMA and TEXAS A&M (Mr Football) later. This was suppose to be the year all the stars were aligned . I love the DOGS but I’m a realist , Why we can’t win these games . It will be a long time before we get back in this position , you can’t play in the SEC back to back games as this and expect wins . Look at SC, FLORIDA , and LSU , great teams but the gaunlet of back to back games got the best of them. Expect more disappointment in the future until we learn how tio win big games. Unforunately we we ll hang around the top ten and never see another NC and everyone will be satisfied. SAD TIMES AHEAD

#1 Did the very experienced CMR forget about ’spikes’ in football?
#2 Why was Lynch, the slowest, non-athletic, tight end on the field during the last drive when clearly you needed a more adept pass catcher and not a run blocker.
#3 Oh, that defense got so tired again. Georgia has the only football team, both pro and college, whose team looks tired right before halftime.
#4 Penalties and discipline, once again, caused a game that should have given Georgia a comfortable lead back to Alabama which is adept at playing close games.
#5 Great Season Bulldawgs but CMR is not a championship coach nor is this a championship program currently. I liked the fake play call in the second quarter though.
#6 CTG has never told Jarvis Jones to spy on the run if he isn’t pass rushing. Jones’ assignments hasn’t changed all season, hence, he was no factor in this game.
#7 Ogletree gets a lot of tackles but doesn’t make a lot of plays. A bit overrated
#8 Rambo, should have went for a deflection instead of an interception (again) on the play action post route on 3rd and 13 that set up Lacy’s first score.
#9 No screens, no short passes, and no Keith Marshall
#10 Georgia played not to lose, not to win, and the players played such a great game and didn’t give up like some games in the past but the coaching staff as a whole let them down once again.
We all got what we expected so there is no reason to get upset.

The Bama thug that hit Murray should sit out the NC game. Richt needs to rethink his philosophy that penalties don’t matter. It was the best SEC Championship game I have seen, and UGA could have easily won. The one positive that came out of it was Adams did not get on the field after the game to steal the camera. That probably sent him into a rug-biting fit. Best luck to Murray and the UGA team in the upcoming bowl.

One more thing about the final pass, though: For all of you who think the plan was to throw the ball to Conley five yards short of the endzone, obviously it was not. The throw was meant to go to Mitchell in the corner of the endzone and it was tipped by a Bama lineman and that made it fall short. I’m sure Conley just reacted on instinct, can’t blame him. Looking at the replays, though, I don’t think the play would have worked anyway. Mitchell was covered well. That’s why spiking the ball would have been the way to go and then Murray would have had time at the line to look over the defense and make sure the play that was called was really the best play.

Nevertheless, great effort by Georgia. That said, the coaches cost the Dogs the game. Why not clock it and settle down instead of hurrying up to run a play? There still would have been time for 2 plays and maybe 3. I like my chances down there with Georgia’s offense in that situation.

We had 400 yards of offense, scored 28 points on Alabama, Murray threw for 250+ yards, Gurley had 100+ rushing, Murray only had one turnover, we had a special teams td, and a successful fake punt, and we LOST the game?

Can we blame George W. Bush for UGA’s loss to Bama? I mean really. He probably would have thrown the pass in the flat as opposed to spiking the ball, too.
If not him, who do we blame? Grover Norquist?? Help me Dawg fans, I need a scapegoat.
For the UGA grads in the blogosphere – scapegoat is a Biblical term. You should probably look it up. It is not a farm animal. So don’t go down that road.

Yes the fire the coach comments will start, but not because of this game, or this season. It’s because Georgia has not played in a BCS for the big one since the 80’s. Never under Joe Cool. Bama could have lost this one and would be back next year, as long as they have the coaching staff they have. If you enjoy almost and wait till next year, then you will be a happy dog fan. Me I expect a team that has the top five recruits almost every year to do better. Playing games like tonight more often would be great. But I can promise you as I have said many times, Joe Cool will not take you to the top. Enjoy the almost tonight, it will be awhile before the next one. It took 11 years to get this close.

I’m disappointed that Schulz is rushing to judgment and piling on. I expect that from the bandwagon “fans” but this is a case of 20-20 hindsight. We’re fortunate to have our coaching staff from Richt on down. Both teams played with incredible intensity, both made plays, both made mistakes. We just came up a few yards and a few seconds short. If you’re a real DGD, ignore the smack talkers and the whiners- win or lose, It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog.

To anybody here that is criticizing this team, you obviously never played competitive sports in your life. Uga ran into an immovable object that was the Bama running game and those boys played their hearts out and left everything on the field. Hats off to Aaron Murray who played a gutsy game and shut all you Murray haters up. If that ball had not been tipped at the line of scrimmage the play could have worked and everybody would have said what a great call it was. Lay off the players and the coaches, they are hurting more than you or I could ever imagine. This quote goes out to all you haters-“Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure…than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” – Theodore Roosevelt.

Murray’s worst play of the game was the underthrown duck right before the half that got picked off and set up an Alabama field goal. Other than that he played fine. The final play wasn’t on him. I know it is tempting to look for someone to blame when your team loses, but this game really just boiled down to Alabama’s offensive line being better than Georgia’s defensive line. If you give up 7 yards per carry the entire game your chances of winning are pretty slim.

Like many others I am intensely proud of the the way the dawgs played today and like many others disappointed by the result. As stated by myself and many others all season it is time for a change in the coaching staff to put UGA back in the big games. 2nd place in the the league–even if it is the SEC–just doesn’t cut it. If we continue to have top quality recruits and end up with the same results then the definition of insanity starts to become the tag line. Time for a change folks.

Wonder how many hundreds of thousands of the male gender and even some of the female gender were screaming at the TV to spike the ball. Could have had two shots into the endzone. I would hate to know I was a Div. I coach and OC and not be smart enough to know exactly what to do in that situation. How many time have we seen it done almost to perfection on Sunday in the NFL? Why do I get the feeling that Fredi Gonzalez was in the pressbox telling Murray what to do? Guess it’s because that is the same convoluted thought process that FG used with the Braves. If I were the AD at GA both the head coach and the OC would be without a job tomorrow. That is just simple plain basic football.

I have to assume that many posting are imposter Dawg fans. That was absolutely gut-wrenching, but the but a ball bouncing the wrong way doesn’t make the performance by our guys any less heroic. I am devastated by the loss and the thought of how close we came, but couldn’t be prouder of our guys.
And let’s not forget, spiking it is a double-edged sword. It wouldn’t make a guy follow his instincts less and not catch a batted pass. If that hadn’t happened, we would have gotten 3 cracks at it with a spike and 2 witthout. But spiking it would had let Bama get regrouped and they were on their heels.
JoeFann

9:08 pm
I was also calling for a spike, but I understand Bobo’s thinking, and it’s valid. You’ve just gone 75 yards in less than a minute. Bama’s defense is on it’s heels. Go for the dagger before they regroup and get set. If you spike, UGA gets 30 seconds to organize the call, Bama gets 30 seconds to regroup and clearly identify assignments, maybe even Bama takes a timeout. If the ball isn’t tipped, you either get a TD, an interception or another shot. Even if it’s tipped anywhere else, you get another shot with everyone set.
The decision I question more is the one to leave Swann one on one all game with Amare Cooper. Why wasn’t Commings on him? And where was Rambo all night? Disappeared after the heavy hit in the first quarter. Was he hurt, or even on the field? Other than Ogletree, kinda average night for the LBs and safeties. Clearly great coverage all night as McCarron had few places to throw, except for the last one. With a four point loss, the missed FG turned out to be big. Woulda been nice to spike and kick a short one to win.
Still, a great game. Congrats to Bama. Go Dawgs!

uhhh, georgia had the ball from their own 15 yard line with 1 minute to go and 0 time outs. they made it to the 8 yard line and had a legitimate shot at winning the game in the opposing red zone of one of the greatest defenses in the country. that’s excellent clock management. the ball was tipped…he WAS throwing in the paint. just didn’t work out.
…if he throws a TD, there, no one would have anything to say.

Debatable point about spiking the ball. Dawgs practice this type of scenario and knew what they wanted to do. They had enough time to run two plays, Bama made the defensive play tipping the ball. Counterpoint to you Jeff, if the Dawgs do spike the ball it gives Bama time to plan a defense. Momentum was with the Dawgs, I support the decision to allow Murray to go to a predetermined play. Hats off to Bama, beat ND, and try and be classy.

Someone else may have already pointed this out, but defensive line got manhandled because they were out of gas. I did not see any backups playing for Geathers or Big John Jenkins the entire game. Do we not have anyone that can give them a break? Way too many snaps for those guys.
next, for those of you blaming Murray after the completion to Lynch. If you watch the reply, he was running to the Line of scrimmage looking at the sidelines and motioning to spike the ball, but must have been signaled to run the play. I believe we must have thought we had a better chance without letting Bama get set up, but unfortunately it got tipped. Also, don’t blame Conley. You are taught to catch the ball and it was just a reaction. We played hard and gave great effort, just lost.

Dawgs were lucky the game was close. Statistically it was an asskicking. We had over 500 yds total offense. Georgia couldn’t get to 400 yds. Differential of 119 total yards and in return yardage was outdid them by 125 yards. 7 more first downs and 37 minutes time of possession. A lucky blocked kick return for a td and a fortuitous 4th down fake punt are the only things that made the game close. Otherwise our running game just mauled the dawgs. It was a dominating performance and a physical beatdown of the dawgs. Dawgs can whine all they want to about spiking the ball or the refs or whatever. The reality is that on the field we manhandled the dawgs.

YOU HAVE TO SPIKE THE BALL THERE. There is no other decision you spike run two plays and don’t throw it short of the end zone. I know he wasn’t targeting the receiver that caught the pass but a spike prevents that from happening as every receiver would be in the end zone or close to the goal line. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE SEQUENCE

Murray telegraphed that last pass. Shoud have looke dthe DE off, by starting his eyes somewhere else. Ball got tipped, then Alabama makes the tackle and time runs out.
And if you’re going to throw that pass at the end locked in to the receiver all the way, at least put some air under it if you’re not 6 foot tall, so the ball gets to the end zone instead of being tipped.
Don’t expect that kind of play from a 4th year qb like Aaron Murray.

Jeff, you are dead wrong. The correct call was to hurry up and run a play against a defense that was scrambling to get set up. Without the tip its either a TD or an incomplete pass and there is still time to run a second play.If you spike the ball you get two plays against a defense that is set up.

Murray gets paid off to throw intentional game ending pass and Conley is apparently stupid enoughf to catch it).
Was there at every game for ‘80 season. They wanted to win and were given the chance to do so.
Richt has no apparent ability to coach in big games.. At least tech knows it has no chance. Does Richt get a raise for getting to seccg? Bet he does and has already cashed check..

Sorry Bullpuppy fans, but you’re now officially screwed. It won’t be a cupcake schedule for Georgia next year. And Florida and South Carolina draw easier schedules than they did this year. Your Bullpuppies will have to earn another trip to the SEC Championship, and lets face it, they never earn ANYTHING. Florida gifted them a win; that’s the only reason they were here this year. And yes, they were thisclose, but even with Nick Saban having less talent than Mark Richt and managing his timeouts poorly in the first half, he was still the better coach.

and even though they don’t “run the state”, they have more national championships than UGA will ever sniff, a richer tradition, a more RECENT national championship than UGA, and once CMR gets sick of the whiny fan base that will likely be calling for his head and finally retires, get back to the days of ray goff, donnan, etc and continue to live in the past and continue as an irrelevant national team

Dawg fans, there are about 120 NCAA football programs that would have loved to been in our place tonight, and frankly probably only a very very few could have played the game to a 4-point margin. And to have a chance to dethrone the champs with a last-minute drive, that’s what every team dreams of. I for one am proud of my Dawgs.
As for the Bama fans on this blog, your coach showed ten times the class that most of you have displayed here. Why the arrogance, hate, and condescencion? WHY? Is it outside of you to show even a little respect to the team that played the second-best game against you all this year?

Will NEVER winn a big game with Murray at QB. Remember, this is the QB that lost to Colorado & Central Florida!! To hell with stats.
Speaking of stats, big mouth Rambo should keep his mouth shut about who has the best defense. Great defenses don’t allow 350 yds rushing in big games. They also make stops when your team needs them .. like when your team is up by 11 in the third quarter. Instead, within a span of 6 minutes, Alabama goes 65 yards in 6 plays & 77 yards in 7 plays to take the lead. SHUT UP RAMBO!!!

Bama has a better offensive line than the freaking Falcons… and they still nearly lost the game despite the big (meaningless) stats.
The final play was an unfortunate fluke you idiots. They were trying to catch Bama flatfooted. The ball dropped right into Conley’s hands and he caught it. It was reflex. He will probably go the rest of his football career without ever being in that situation again. Those of you saying it was coaching… I sure hope you get your work nit picked and second guessed at every opportunity this week and that you are berated for every mistake you make. thats right, the UGA football tradition does date back more than 20 years. Actually, around 32 is more accurate. And we will continue to hear about if forever, and ever, and ever……but the rest of us will have to be content with more recent history, SEC championships , BCS championships, etc. Bama, Florida, LSU will continue their current tradition (and auburn, tennessee have more BCS champ trophies for that matter) while we will have to cede 1980-3 to the mighty dawgs. sigh…..

Look Dawg fans I know UGA got over on the Gators this year. But that doesn’t change the facts. UF has college talent, UGA has NFL talent. UF wins the BCS now and then (96,06,08) UGA wins only when Halley’s comet comes around. If Muschamp loses to UL-Lafayette, his butt is on the way back to Texas. UGA keeps giving CMR contract extensions, anybody see a problem here.
All this would be solved if CMR takes the Chick-Fil-A franchise in Toccoa.

FOOTBALL 101 – When to spike the ball
Spiking the ball wastes a down so only spike when time is scarce and more valuable than downs. With four downs to play and only 15 seconds left with no time outs and a potential national championship in the balance time is scarce in the extreme and the fourth down has no value because at most three plays are possible. In such a situation it borders on malpractice to fail to spike.

My hat is off to Coach R. I have always said that he just is not a great game day coach. He had the Dogs ready to play and they were just a play away from winning. Coach Saban has built a great program and has a great team. We came close to beating the best. That game is something for the Dogs to build on. They have some great players just not as many as Alabama had. Coach R was not the problem.

most of the comments I have read on hear are ignorant and most of you know very little about football. Murray played great. The usual scapegoat Bobo had a great season and we were so close to a national title shot. Def got the short end of the stick on the calls but we couldnt stop the run. yea we prolly shoulda spiked the ball but even if we had the same thing coulda happened. He was throwing to the end zone and it got tipped which coulda happened the play after spiking the ball. Trust me I was devastated but not disappointed in my team. they showed up and came to play. As for next year we got plenty of studs to replace departing defensive players and we got most of the offense back and another top 5 class. Murray made some great plays tonite and outplayed McCrying who is so damn overrated. He made one play to a wide open receiver. O and we get our recruits legit unlike your boy Saban. GA fans ride thru thick and thin not just when its good times. I know this cause I know a shit load more bama fans now than 5 years ago. Anyways if your a fan then just talk about how you hate we lost. If you dont know the game and most of you dont, then dont try to talk about what you think is wrong or this has to be fixed or that. Maybe you would be happy going back to the days of goff and donnan. CMR has been close a few times and he will get it soon enough. And for the dude who is done with GA cause of this game, you never was a fan but more like a punk and im glad to know you dont ride wit my team anymore. So very sad for those guys. They gave it their all. We can debate this play and that play, but had we scored, the 350 on the ground that Bama racked up would be irrelevant.
I am disappointed, but I can honestly say that I am very proud of our team. We never gave up and we showed the nation that we were worthy; just came up a little bit short. Never been prouder to be an alumnae and a Georgia Bulldog.
Real GA fans, please support your team and think about what you are saying before you post a comment. Not saying you can’t be critical, but show some class and be respectful.

We in the “Bulldawg Nation” need to check ourselves regarding this program and coaching staff. We need only to look to North Ave and see the disaster that program has become. And before folks start talking about them going to a BCS bowl, save it. Nobody cares. It’s a freaking joke. After you’ve mulled over that illustrious program look north to TN since they fired Fullmer. Vandy is now the top program in that state.

It may not have changed the outcome, but if the late hit on Murray is called(and it’s unfathomable how it wasn’t with a ref in the frame on the TV Replay) then the interception is nullified and Bama doesn’t get to kick that field goal. Without it Dogs are down by one at the end needing only a field goal to win. Great game between two great teams. This was the National Championship Game.

To the entire dog nation (AH’s too):
The fact is you controlled your own destiny. If you won last night, you play for the BCS Championship Game against Notre Dame and have a chance to win your first National Championship in 32 years. If you lost, you knew that you would fall behind Florida in the BCS rankings and not be eligible for a BCS bowl (no conference gets to send more than two teams). You knew this for over a week.
Everyone in college football knows that the BCS system is a crap shoot and that’s why it is being shelved in 2 more years. It sucks now, but it is what it is-an “everybody wins a trophy” type of system. While wanna bees like Louisville etc., get rewarded for underachievement, georgia needs to go to the Cotton Bowl, beat Texas by 30 and finish up a legitimate top 5 team! Think of where you came from just a few short years ago!
I could not be more proud of your players and coaches. They are top notch, though I think Grantham should have made adjustments and lined up Jarvis Jones in the middle instead of outside in the 2nd half. Same run defense, just more inside stunts and different looks for Alabama’s massive offensive line to contend with.
Nevertheless, Grantham is a great coach and georgia prepared for and played a tremendous game in the national spotlight. They won the hearts of many outside of the dog Nation (use Google and see for yourself). Coach Richt, Bobo, Grantham and company have brought you all the way back to national prominence. You can now compete NATIONALLY on the field and in the living room of the best recruits in America!
However, though I have gained a lot of respect for the Georgia program, I would not hesitate rolling one of you if you bark in my face in public.

They had a play called. Alabama was reeling. Murray motioned to the sideline like he was going to spike it, but didn’t, surprising everyone watching. Including Alabama. An incompletion and there’s time for another play. A completion and we would all be talking about what a brilliant move it was. Instead, the ball is tipped and a Georgia receiver instinctively catches it. That could just as easily happened after spiking the ball. Give it a rest, people.

Give the team a break. If the ball had not been tipped and the fade pass had been incomplete, Ga would have had another shot. If Ga had spiked the ball (which I agreed should have been done) and the tipped pass had been caught short of the goal line, it would have been tough to get another play off and it would have been chaotic. Ga clearly gave away a small advantage at the end, had they scored it would have been an all time classic game. But don’t let it denigrate a fantastic effort.

Dawgs tackling was terrible. Arm tackling some of strongest running backs doesn’t work. That strategy might have worked against teams like Tech and GA Southern…not Bama..Coach Gratham. Bama basically ran over and through our defense. Don’t get me wrong, our young men played their hearts out. We were simply out coached and overpowered. Bama is good yall. That offensive line pushed our defense up and down the Down like toys. Our defense couldn’t sustain the pressure. What happened to Gurshall? Keith Marshall ran the ball twice. Why did Bobo change his strategy? Why not stick to what got you there. Bottom line…Mark Ritcht and Co. can’t finish the drill to win the Big Ones that count.

NOBODY can win when the opposition runs the ball for over 350 yards AND has a damn good defense
to go along with that. I cannot believe “adults” posted such complete BS(maybe they are NOT adults)!!!
Those of us that paid attention(and remained sober) saw Saban do the SAME as CMR regarding stopping the clock immediately before halftime and for those with short memories Saban was questioned about it by the female reporter on his way to the dressing room at halftime.
While you “fools” are raising hell about the results of one of the best games I have ever seen UGA play, Saban is speaking out praising UGA and campaigning for UGA to get a BCS Bowlgame invite.
This will give some of our UGA Saban-bashers a little insight as to his class and I thank him for it but if he had been the UGA coach last night you inbreds would want him fired. Did Bama fans want Saban fired after Texas A&M beat Bama??? Of course not!!!!! I must admit I’m dissappointed but things happen and that is the way it is. Until someone can figure out how to turn this program around it may/will continue.
My hat is off to both teams and their players for an outstanding game. Although I wish Georgia had won, it may be a forgone conclusion that if you run the same plays over and over again and make decisions that have an impact that cost your team a game, something is being done wrong!
This loss lays squarely at the feet of the coaches!

———-No Blame In A Great Game—————-
Georgia Made the Richt Move at the End:
The argument that we should have spiked the ball is NON-SENSE. Alabama was in disarray, the hurry up offense had helped us throughout the game. If the pass wasn’t tipped it might have been a TD and if it had gone incomplete then we would have still had one or two more chances. The receiver who caught the tipped ball surely thought he might be able to keep his feet and take it in.

We all can’t have a Saban, Spurrier, Patterson or a Kelly. What’s sad is that we have these spells where all the talent is there but because of slightly above average coaching we can only have good but not great. Norte Dame would have beaten Georgia with their intangibles and coaching. Don’t want to end the SECs streak and have that pinned on UGA.

It was actually 500+ yards. Looks like you have your own license to be stupid.

Seriously falcons shouldn’t even bother we know they will lose in div play, being an Atl fan is just horrible sometimes.

Being a fan of ATL pro teams is even worse–ONE championship in 156 seasons of competition. Hopefully the Falcons will double that championship total early in ‘13.

I hope most of the posters here being critical of Coach and Murray have already educated themselves out of ignorance, but maybe not, so here goes:
Spiking the ball takes a couple second off the clock. The offense was ready to go with the next play. So why waste the chance at another play, a second or a third, by spiking the ball. The play that ended the game was supposed to be a fade to Mitchell in the corner, a touchdown or incomplete. Very bad luck that it got tipped, then caught at the 5.

Hey Jeff,
UGA had a soft schedule? Really? How come no one has been talking about Alabama’s soft schedule? Let’s compare Alabama’s schedule to Georgia’s, shall we? UGA and Bama played 5 common opponents: Tennesee, Ole Miss, Florida Atlantic, Auburn, and Missouri. The results for both teams in those 5 games were very similar. The other 5 Bama opponents were: Michigan, Western Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Western Carolina. I doubt you can call any of those teams a powerhouse this year. The last 2 opponents for Bama were LSU and Texas A&M, which, as the outcomes showed, were comparable to Florida and SC for Georgia. So going into the SEC Championship, both teams were evenly matched, according to their respective schedules.

I’m a Tech fan, and it always amazes that the biggest haters on UGA blogs are the idiot fans who think UGA should be winning championships every freakin’ year. And they’re the first to point fingers and lay the blame, usually on their own coaches and players. What a bunch a retards.
1. UGA didn’t lose because of coaching or Aaron Murray; they lost because, in the end, they couldn’t stop bama’s O-line and running game.
2. Like other’s have said, if the fade to Mitchell isn’t tipped and becomes a TD, Mark Richt’s a genius. If the pass isn’t tipped, I think UGA gets a TD or a pass inteference.
3. Great effort against a superior opponent. The only thing UGA has to be ashamed of is their ignorant fan base.
Why Georgia is Georgia

From a College Football Fans Perspective:
They are calling it a moral victory and a great effort and are proud of their dawgs. That’s why they are Georgia….and that’s why there is Alabama. When you are #3 and lose to #1 on a neutral field and severly hamper your chances of winning due to poor clock management you should be disgusted. You essentially bet against 2 or 3 well planned end zone shots and put your chips on sort of gimmicky play.
Thing that cracked me up about Georgia this year was that they claimed this way their chance. Not so much because they were so good but that they had such a softer schedule compared to their counterparts. Don’t necessarily think that is the way to approach being a National Champion.

Poor coaching #1 bobo and richt will never have a national championship. not until Bobo is gone. He has plagued the bulldogs will bad play calling and poor clock management for a Long time. Dont Blame murray. Kid played great. His coaches should have had a better 2 minute plan.tried and didnt work go home georgia…. yet another year.

Seriously, anyone who doesn’t understand what makes college football a great game should watch the replay of the SECCG. Just loved the “get after it” factor that both teams brought. Gotta say I thought UGA played with a much higher tempo than Bama and their players wanted it more; if not for a dominating offensive line performance (not sure if a.j. was sacked, but UGA d-line got pushed off the ball almost all game). So excited for the BCS Championship game. Hope all the Dawgs forgive us our Quinton Dial controversy and cheer for the Tide to bring down the Catholics! RTR!!!
