SEC title would mean Georgia’s return to elite status (video added)

(VIDEO ADDED BELOW)

This might stun starry-eyed middle-schoolers and high school players, who are otherwise oblivious to ancient history before 2006 in the SEC. But even the football Godzillas of this conference and, it follows, the globe, aren’t that far removed from humility (and Shreveport).

Before the last five seasons under Nick Saban, Alabama had an 11-year stretch (1997-2007) when it reached double digits in wins only three times, suffered through four losing seasons, four non-bowl years, lost to Auburn six straight years, went to the Music City Bowl twice and even was subjected to the Independence Bowl . . . three times! There’s your, “Roll Tide.”

Florida fans would like to forget the Ron Zook era of relative torment, sandwiched between Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer.

Auburn just fired a coach, Gene Chizik, who won a national championship two years ago.

LSU: You say Saban and Les Miles. I raise you Mike Archer, Curley Hallman and Gerry DiNardo.

The Dogs have given "Dawgnation" much to cheer about. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

The Dogs have given fans much to cheer about. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

It happened before, it can happened again. It happened to Georgia. Mark Richt won two SEC championships in his first five seasons (2002 and 2005). He is still waiting for a third.

So before anybody makes any grand declarations about what Georgia’s return to national relevancy this season means for the future of the Bulldogs’ program, place a ping-pong ball on the kitchen table, open the window and try to give assurances that it won’t roll off the edge at some point.

However, Georgia’s ascent this season — and actually it’s climb since the 0-2 start of 2011 — has significance. Credit to Richt, his staff and all associated with the Georgia program, because a team doesn’t go 21-1 in a stretch of regular season games, even it managed to avoid Alabama or LSU, without doing a lot of things right. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 3 in the BCS. They are back in the SEC title game again, facing No. 2 Alabama in Saturday’s SEC championship. The winner faces No. 1 for the national title.

It’s this simple: Georgia has an opportunity to affirm itself as a member of the SEC’s elite, and ranking among the SEC elite is synonymous with the national elite. Imagine how this feels for Richt, after seeing his program seemingly erode over several months, going 7-9 in consecutive SEC seasons, losing to the likes of Kentucky, Mississippi State, Colorado and Central Florida.

“It’s what you always hope for,” Richt said Sunday of the team’s position this week. “It’s what you want.  We know pre‑season rankings are for the fans.  Where you’re ranked at the end of the year is the most important. [But] it’s not about me. It’s about Georgia. It’s about this program, this team, these young men, this coaching staff.  I don’t worry too much about all the personal stuff. But it is great to be in this position at this point.  You fight like mad every year to get your team in this position.”

Georgia was in the SEC title game a year ago against then-No. 1 LSU, but there’s a greater sense of excitement and confidence in Athens now. The Dogs ranked only 14th in the BCS before last year’s SEC game. National title hopes were smothered in Week 1 (loss to Boise State). Respectability hopes were stomped on in Week 2 (loss to South Carolina).

If Richt wants to play the no-respect card with his players this week, it’s available. Most of the national commentary has focused on the potential of an Alabama-Notre Dame final. But that was expected. One doesn’t eclipse Alabama until one beats Alabama.

Even while acknowledging that Georgia and Alabama mirror each other in several areas this year, Richt said: “One thing they’ve done is they’ve been national champions and we’ve not. They’ve been SEC champions and we’ve not, during the time-frame of these kids’ careers.”

They are the measuring sticks all go by. Richt has won his share of games since 2006 but his accomplishments have paled compared to Saban, Miles and Meyer. Saban is 39-9 (.812) in the SEC with one conference and two BCS titles. Miles is 40-10 (.800) with two SEC and one BCS championship. In Meyer’s last five seasons at Florida (2006-10), he went 31-9 (.775) in the SEC, with two conference and two crystal trophies.

Georgia is back on the doorstep to both. The climb has been impressive.

Tampa Gator,
“A ref came out of nowhere (the same one who made the call on Easley) and threw a flag for facemask on Leon Orr. I just watched the replay. No one even touched his face mask. The FSU game will be very similar to the Georgia game. Florida had one more first down. Florida converted 6 or 17 3rd down opportunities. Georgia 1 of 10.”
_________________________________________
Well, you’ve shown your North End of your Southbound horse all day Tampa Gator. If there was no facemask, then why did Leon Orr after Todd Gurley was face down in the turf, take his hands off his facemask ? Watch the same replay as everyone else Tampa Gator. As for your B.S. that Easley did not violate any college football rule grabbing him and holding him to the ground while the ball is clearly in the air to him Easley on his back, again, watch the same replay we all saw.

If the FSU game is going to be the same as the UGA game, then I presume you expected Florida State to take the ball away from your offense 6 times on strips and picks ? I said Florida beats FSU in a rout.

Georgia converted 1 of 10 1st Downs, oh, sorry to point out but that was a 3rd and 5 from the 45-yard line, us ahead by a point when Aaron Murray threw the football to Malcolm Mitchell for a Passing Touchdown with Artie Lynch block downfield to put us in the end zone again on a drive where Aaron Murray tried a Todd Gurley run once for nothing and every other play was Aaron Murray willing our team down the field to put the game away, while even you admit that Florida would have just had our Defense take the ball away from you, again, if it was allowed was the ball was in the air for Easley to be prostrate on top into the ground. How many Touchdowns did Jeff Driskel manage your team to ?

__________________________________________________________________
YOU said after the game that our Defense would’ve just taken the ball away again.
__________________________________________________________________

Now, you have a different slant on it.

Our Defense took the ball away from your Offense and played keep-away with it all night long. Our Offense punched it in to begin the game and to end the game. Thus, while our Defense held Florida to 3 field goals, we put up 2 Touchdowns directed by Aaron Murray.

When you lose; try being a man and come into your Opponents Blog and say them straight-up. Congratulations. Your Defense stymied our Offense all night long.

As for your B.S. braggadocio about you guys putting up a 12-1 season and how great that is; you will not play for the BCS National Championship; you will not play for The SEC Championship and you are not, again, The SEC East Champion.

In addition, you lost twice in a row with your new coach, who also bragged how badly he would beat us, and still hasn’t either of his 1st two seasons. Our Defense held your Offense without a TD all day long. None. The game was decided on the field, and the winner is the team whom it was obvious to all even before the kick-off, came into the game with intensity. You LOST because of the constant pressure of our Defense, and because YOUR DEFENSE allowed us to score 2 TD on them.

______
Right ?
______

You’re still trying to come-up with something to what ?

Save Face ?

You Lost, again, get over it. We’re 42-38-1 in Jacksonville, after beating you twice in a row.

_______________________________________________
Maybe if you could have held us to 0 1st Downs on 3rd Down Conversion attempts, you could have lost by 1.
_______________________________________________

If you are supposed to be such a great running team, and everything was the ref’s fault that you lost Tampa Gator, how come all you could get on our Defense was only 83 yards rushing while we put up 123 yards rushing on your great defense ?

You even ran the football 6 more times than we did.

If your Defense was so great, and Our Quarterback and Our Offense so much worse according to you, why did we have more total offense than you had ?

Too obvious posting replies to the likes of you.

We had 7 more yards of total offense than you had on 10 fewer plays than you had.

Your Quarterback only threw 2 interceptions while our Quarterback threw 3 ?

You forgot to mention that our Defense forced 6 fumbles, 4 of which your offense also did not go get the ball, but our Defense, again.

Why leave all this out Tampa Gator ?

We punted the ball twice inside your 20-yard line. Remember ? You couldn’t score a TD all day ? Coming back to you ?

And, if Jeff Driskel was so much better than Aaron Murray, how come we had 5 sacks and you did not get 1 sack of Aaron Murray ?

______________________________________________________
NO WE PRESSURED FLORIDA FROM BEFORE THE PRE-GAME
______________________________________________________

One-sided B.S. from you all day long Tampa Gator. How come your kicker did not make a single solitary point after touchdown, PAT ? Was that the ref’s fault to ? You don’t know diddle-e-squat about being a fan. And, you are a horrible loser – just as you used to be a horrible winner; so that doesn’t surprise me, either.

Wake me up when Will Muschamp actually does what he GUARANTEED he would do 2 games ago, now ?

Between Jordan Reed crying because Jarvis Jones took the ball away from him, down 8 points with a minute and the game and your whining in here all day long about the refs cheated, it just makes the win all the more satisfying. God, I hate Florida fans.

And, thanks for the rout of FSU – that cemented us at # 3.

It does Florida no good to root for Alabama. I rooted for Florida loudly on these blogs against Florida State, and guaranteed a rout. I rooted loudly for Texas A and M over Alabama, and guaranteed Johnny Football would run through and pass over Alabama, as we will too. I was told on that one by a FSU fan that it would hurt UGA and he guaranteed before that Alabama loss and again afterwards, that it would prevent UGA from playing in the nc title game. I told him he was wrong on both accounts. I did root for LSU over Florida. I did not root for Florida over South Carolina. I did root for Florida 2012 against Ohio State to keep Ohio State without a bowl win ever over The SEC. I will root for Florida in whatever BCS Bowl you play in against whatever hapless opponent the BCS Bowl pits against you. It will be a sorry team, a sorry game, and huge Florida blow-out, whoever it is.

You will quickly decide that BCS Bowl berth means NOTHING other than the semi-final game Georgia has for

I look at this game differently than most fans. Most fans look at it from a match up stand point( offense vs. defense, stats etc.), but I come at it from a mentality standpoint. I look at it from a mental toughness standpoint. I think South Carolina, UGA, and Florida are all neck and neck IMO. I think they all play well when they have a lead. But when they get punched in the mouth, they fall apart and get drilled. There’s not the resiliency to bounce back. That’s why I knew my Dawgs could beat the Gators, because I knew they haven’t been punched in the mouth yet, and once they were they didn’t respond. Bama on the other hand, is a different animal. They got punched in the mouth vs. A&M and were able to fight their way back. That’s a big plus for Bama. The reason is Nick Saban. He is such a good coach at teaching the mental aspect of the game, especially in adverse situations.

Now all that being said, for UGA to win this game, they have to come out with a bully mentality like they did against Florida in 2007. They got to beat Bama to the punch. If we come out conservative, or if Bobo calls stupid plays, or we make a lot of stupid mistakes…them Bama will absolutely destroy us. But if we got and fight like hell for 60 min, we got a shot. This game is 30% X’s and O’s, and 70% about just whipping the guy in front of you. Our stars have to play like stars and our role players have to play above their level.

Honest analysis: Top to bottom, Bama is a better team than we are. But the better team doesn’t always win. Dawgs will have to put their big boy pants on and go to work if they want this one.

I also said Florida would’ve beat Alabama 2012. And, that Florida would’ve beat Notre Dame as Alabama and Georgia are licking our chops over a similar win, instead. I do not root for Georgie tek against anyone. I do not root for FSU against anyone. I do not root for Ohio State against anyone. I do not root for Tim Tebow GPOE against anyone, but would’ve if he had and when he does play a position like LB or RB. I never root for Southern California against anyone. I rooted for the national champion each of the current 6-years, and will root for the national champion 2012, as well. I never root for Notre Dame.

Florida fans on this blog tonight rooting for Alabama BS
____________________________________________

Why ? It doesn’t do you ANY GOOD WHATSOEVER. You’re not going to play in the BCS NC Title Game. Now, are you ? If Alabama wins, you don’t, and if UGA wins, you don’t.

You’re just in here crying in your milk, whining about the refs and after the game saying if the ref did not call the interference on the play on the winning TD drive against your not get after our butts defense allowing us 2 TD, that our Defense would’ve just taken the ball away anyway.

The ball is in the air Dominique Easley all over Todd Gurley both parallel to the ground Dominique Easley on top the whole entire time the ball was in the air.

After the game, Tampa Gator said if the ref did not call interference on the play, us ahead anyway by 1, that UGA Defense would’ve just taken the damn ball away from Florida’s offense, anyway.

Now, tonight Tampa Gator has a different view of it, saying that UGA defense did not take the ball away from Florida’s offense all night long, playing keep-away with the football from Florida’s offense.

TampaGator tonight reckons that UGA Defense did not take the ball away from Florida all night long, and in fact the usually normally solid Florida offense just had mental lapse, not affected 1 iota by any UGA defense and that the UGA defense did not pressure Florida’s offense all night long, and actually just gave the game away, un-forced.

Revisionist TampaGator. Can’t get elected like that TampaGator.

UGA defense would’ve just taken the damn ball away again anyway, if the ref didn’t call Dominique Easley for interference crawling all over Todd Gurley’s back the whole entire time the ball was in the air to him, who catches a pass every game, by the way and who had more yards rushing than your entire team did in the game, by the way.

Which is it TampaGator ? Ga defense would’ve just taken the damn ball away from your offense AGAIN, as we did all night long according to you just after the game on this blog TampaGator ?

Or, UGA defense did not pressure FL offense all night long and the regularly sure-handed FL offense, just had a mental lapse ?

Let me know when you make up your mind to save face on this blog TampaGator ?

Last year UGA got stomped in the SEC championship game and went to the Outback bowl as their punishment. This year, its looking like UGA is going to get stomped in the SEC championship game and end up going to the Outback bowl. Wow, what a meteoric rise. They will fall back to the middle tier of the SEC again once the scheduling gods quit smiling upon them.

61-59 all UGA opponents 2012 season, not counting the bowl game yet
62-62 all Ohio State University opponents 2012 season over, no bowl

UGA’s opponents are BETTER than Ohio State’s opponents, and note too please that UGA’s final strength of schedule is going to be significantly improved by whomever it is we play in our bowl game as the # 3 ranked team in both the AP Poll and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

Note too, please, that Ohio State’s final strength of schedule is going to be worse than it is now because the Big 10 has had a horrible season in which there will be a ton of bowl losses for the Big 10 again, thus putting Ohio State’s Strength of Schedule worse than it is now.

But, as it stands now before our bowl game, our UGA Strength of Schedule is BETTER than Ohio State’s already. Not that the child buckeye will address that, just as he has failed to answer the question of who is Ohio State’s best win all 2012 season ?

When I told the child who will not address any point ever, after careful research, that Ohio State University has never had a football player who ever did a thing, he said Chris Spielman – a nobody ESPN broadcaster making the news not reporting it like Jeff Schultz does who did not win a national championship for Ohio State, who has never been Super Bowl MVP or even ever even played in a Super Bowl and who didn’t help any team he was ever on ever do anything ever either. If Chris Spielman is the best football player Ohio State University ever turned-out, one would think the child buckeye could’ve found 1 football player ever for Ohio State who ever did anything, if there ever was one. Since there isn’t however, he hasn’t – the child buckeye.

The NCAA does not get into who are national champions because to begin with bowls were a reward given only 8 teams or 10 teams at the most, and were not considered part of those seasons, and because the championship is not determined on the field as in all other sports at all other levels including every other level of the sport of college football except for the group variously referred to previously as the 1-A and now referred to as FBS.

The NCAA does produce an Official NCAA Records’ Book FBS and before that 1-A Football. In it, UGA has 6 national championships in football 1-A and Alabama has 19. Georgie tek also has 6 national championships football 1-A, and their 6 includes all the same polls which also have ranked UGA # 1 in the nation after the conclusion of the entire season, including after all bowls, although again the AP Poll is one of those listed and the AP Poll – like the Heisman Trophy STILL IS – still did not include the bowl games and came out with their AP Poll they referred to as the Final AP Poll which is the only poll published for that year.

It is where you end up in the polls that matters,

as Mark Richt just told you.

the ohio state fans must have been proud the way they cheered and carried that cheater around on their shoulders, disgusting! That was the man responsible for your team not getting a chance to play for a title and you cheer for him?

UGA was an Elite Football Program coming into the 2008 season.

UGA was an Elite Football Program after the 1983 season.

UGA was an Elite Football Program after the 1948 season.

3 times, 3 different Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program’s Coaches had us an Elite Football Program, didn’t they Clark Griswald Jr. who hides who his team is so we can compare.

To be an Elite Football Program Clark Griswald Jr., you have to be in the Top 10 All-Time in College Football Wins, you have to have won some national championships, you have to have significant players who are in the College Football Hall of Fame who played on those teams those years and are considered to the top football players of all-time for it to have been an Elite Football Program at that time, you have to have some players on those teams also went on and proved it by doing something in the NFL with their NFL teams who have to have done something too, you need to have been in the Top 10 a significant number of those years in which you were considered an Elite Football Program, and you must have beat the very best football teams at the time, Won Conference Championships during that time, and Won Significant Bowl Games in Major Bowl Games, and done so without being on NCAA Probation in Football.

Ohio State University football fans were proud in 2002 putting Maurice Clarett on their shoulders then, too for that tainted season as well, in Ohio State University’s

6 NCAA PROBATIONS – Ohio State University

All their wins are tainted, not that they beat anyone in 2012 or 2002, or 2007 for that matter.

2 times Ohio State prevented UGA from playing for the BCS NC Title Game.

Now, UGA Beat-Writer Macon paper, Seth Emerson, ranks Ohio State University # 3 AHEAD of UGA who plays 2 more games than Ohio State, has a TOUGHER STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE than Ohio State, and who has beat the # 4 team while Ohio State has NO TOP TEAM THEY BEAT 2012.

120 D1 teams and Dawgs playing in SECCG to decide WHO plays in BCS Championship Game. I would say elite status has arrived. Did I mention 120 teams. Did i mention Tech is as low as it’s been in a long time……And yes, there are probably 5-10 teams that could beat Georgia Saturday….But, the system is what it is. Dawgs didn’t make the system, they just play in it. These are National votes by the way, not AJC votes….so Tech, deal with it. Go Dawgs.

JB, yes, but Seth Emerson of Macon.com UGA Beat-Writer voted for Ohio State AHEAD of UGA before we play The SEC Championship Game. And, I am not sure how many teams would beat UGA Saturday, either. We have it going on. I listened to the Nick Saban show yesterday and he is focused on the game with us. Taking care of business, not being distracted about anything else, he said. He’s been here before. His players on this team have Won The BCS NC Title Game 2 of the current 3 years. Only the True Freshman he has on this team have not been here before and WON. Obviously, discussing the Notre Dame game – is a worthless waste of time. That team could not beat ANY of the SEC BCS Top 10 teams, of which there are 6 and of which Notre Dame has beat NONE not just of the 6 SEC Top 10 teams, but Notre Dame has not beat ANY of the Top 10 teams.

Notre Dame has NO BUSINESS in this BCS NC Title Game; they know it; their players know it; their fans know it, and everyone in The SEC knows it.

GATA Saturday at 4pm. I’ll be there for ESPN GameDay.

With 63 games to-date between the 2 teams, 38 of which were home games for Alabama – Alabama has Won 36.

At the ACC Championship game in Charlotte, It costs FIVE times more to park your car outside the stadium ($15) than it does to buy a ticket to watch Tech play inside ($3).

Seeing as how they’re ranked #1, I’d say the Irish belong in the BCSCG.

“AP poll out…..

1. Notre Dame……2 wins vs. top 15 teams.
2. Bama…….1 win vs. top 15 teams.
3. Georgia…..1 win (Florida) vs. top 15 teams.
4. Ohio State….0 wins vs. top 15 teams (what a joke that Meyer’s team is rated above Florida)
5. Florida….4 wins vs. top 15 teams (losing only to Georgia.

Poll should be…..

1. Notre Dame
2. Georgia
3. Florida
4. Bama
5. Ohio State (only because they are undefeated and not because they have played anyone)

But….the AP…..does not want Florida to jump Notre Dame in the final BCS poll when Georgia beat Bama…..and they will keep Florida below Ohio State to make sure that does not happen. Maybe the coaches will be smarter…..but I doubt it.”
